Load capacity for most effective was results 6. How much water is consumed by the appliance for a normal wash (Note: Cold wash performance has not been measured and is not guaranteed. 7. Energy consumption figures for hot and cold wash STATE / READ The two key features on the Energy Rating label for showing the energy efficiency of the appliance are: ANSWER 1. The Star Rating showing the energy efficiency of the appliance on a scale of 1 to 6 stars. Half-star increments are now show. 2. The Energy consumption figure which shows how much energy the appliance uses annually in KILOWATT- HOURS when tested to the Australian Standard. Remember that the Energy consumption box air conditioners shows the energy use per hour when tested to the Australian standard. The Star Rating • Provides consumers with an easy way of comparing the energy efficiency of different models with similar features (such as size volume and capacity) – i.e. the star rating lets you compare only apples with apples. • Models of similar size with the same star rating can still have considerably different energy consumption, because each star covers a fairly wide range. So it is important to look at the stars first and then compare the energy consumption figures in the coloured box. W/B 11 W/B 12

2.6 continued METHOD CONTENT RESOURCES 5 minutes WORKING OUT APPLIANCE ANNUAL RUNNING COST STATE / READ Sometimes high star rated models can cost a little more to purchase, but the savings made for ongoing running costs can easily exceed the original price. This means that over the long term the customer is sure to make big savings on their energy bills. SHOW The Thumb Test for Electrical Appliances Example of Energy Consumption figure DEMONSTRATE (Demonstrate the thumb test) STATE / READ To give your customer a quick and rough estimate of how much the product will cost them to run each year you can use the energy consumption figure in the coloured box. Simply use the thumb test. Place your thumb over the last digit of the figure in the box and this gives you a rough estimate of the Running Cost per year. x For a quick estimate of how much the appliance costs to run for its lifetime (about 10 to 12 years) just remove your thumb. The entire energy consumption figure is a very rough estimate of the Lifetime Running Cost. STATE / READ Note: using the thumb test underestimates Lifetime Running Costs by about 35%. Therefore to provide your customer with accurate figures you have to include the energy tariffs in your calculations. However the thumb test can still be used to give a quick comparison of products with similar features. The thumb test cannot be used for air conditioners as the Energy consumption figure is measured in kWh per hour. W/B 12 W/B 13 Page 13
