## 2.6 continued METHOD

2.6 continued METHOD CONTENT RESOURCES Page 18 To determine an estimated Annual Running Cost for gas space heaters and gas water heaters, multiply the Comparative Energy Consumption figure in the red box by the cost of the customer’s gas tariff (for this example an average of 1.0 cents/MJ is used). Some customers may be on LPG gas (bottled gas) if this is so an average gas tariff of 2.0 cents/MJ can be used. Make sure you ask your customer what type of gas they use before calculating the appliance running costs. To determine an estimated Lifetime Running Cost for gas space heaters and gas water heaters multiply the Annual running cost by 12. Remember 12 years is used to equate with the life cycle of the appliance. Gas Ducted Heaters SHOW Example Gas ducted heater AND WORK Annual Running Costs THROUGH Comparative Energy Consumption EXAMPLES x space to be heated x Gas tariff = Annual Running Cost 133 MJ/m 3/year x 265 m 2 x 2.4 m x 1.0 cents/MJ ÷ 100 = \$845.88 Lifetime Running Costs Lifetime Running Cost = Annual Running Cost x 12 years \$845.88 x 12 years = \$10,151 To determine an estimated annual running cost for gas ducted heaters, multiply the comparative energy consumption figure in the red box by the cost of the customer’s gas tariff by the space to be heated. Space to be heated means the floor area measured in metres squared (m 2) and the average ceiling height, measured in metres (m). Don’t forget to ask you customer for this information. W/B 17 W/B 17

2.6 continued METHOD CONTENT RESOURCES For this purpose will assume the use of natural gas with an average tariff of 0.9 cents/MJ. Some customer may be on LPG gas (bottled gas) if this is so an average gas tariff of 2.0 cents/MJ can be used. Remember 12 years is used to equate with the life cycle of the appliance. For gas ducted heaters the Comparative Energy Consumption figure only applies to the ‘heating furnace’ and does not include the ductwork or outlet registers. STATE / READ When recommending a gas ducted heater remind your customer that consideration must also be given to the design of the system, quality of the ductwork, location of thermostats and controls, quality of outlet registers and zoning opportunities. These factors will effect the heating efficiency of the system. 5 minutes HOW MUCH GREENHOUSE GAS IS PRODUCED? The Energy Rating label can also be used to estimate the amount of greenhouse gas produced annually by the appliance. Using the Energy Rating labels to estimate GHG Emissions Greenhouse gas emissions generated from appliance use vary depending on the resources used to generate the electricity. In this manual the Australian average is used. This assumes that a majority of electricity is generated from burning coal, so for each kWh/year used by an appliance 1 kg of CO 2 is emitted at the power station. This figure will vary for those States that use cleaner resources, such as natural gas or water, to generate their electricity (e.g. Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia) and will be higher in States that use resources such as brown or black coal (e.g. Victoria and NSW). EXAMPLE Example for a high star rated clothes dryer. 206 kWh/year X 1kg = 206 kg of (CO 2) per year Over the lifetime of the unit: 206 kg/year x 12 years = 2472 kg ÷ 1000 = 2.47 tonnes of greenhouse gas (CO 2) W/B 17 W/B 18 Page 19
