Treatment, evaluation based progression, precautions and practice tips will be discussed using “standard of care” guidelines for PT, OT and orthotic management which were recently developed by the International SMA Standard of Care Committee . iC36 - THe use of mediCaTion for THe neurologiCally imPaired CHild location: Meeting Room Teresa Such-Neibar, DO Course level: Basic to Intermediate Purpose: To understand the pathophysiology of the irritable brain in children with acquired brain injury from trauma or from an intrauterine insult . To gain a basic understanding of the results and side effects of medications used to help children successfully function in their environment . Target audience: Physiatrists, Developmental Pediatricians, Nurse Practitioners, and Therapists . Course summary: Definitions, background statistics, and pathophysiology of brain injury will be discussed . Primary and secondary injury will be reviewed as well as neuropsychologic impairments . Both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic options will be discussed with the majority of the time spent on pharmacologic interventions . Emphasis will be placed on limiting polypharmacy to decrease side effects . A medication checklist will assist in narrowing and prioritizing the focus of treatment .
