Creating an Accurate 3D Geometrical Model of the Human

Creating an Accurate 3D Geometrical Model of the Human Masticatory System Using Image-Pro ® Plus Rimas Surna Ph.D. – Kaunas University of Technology, Kaunas, Lithuania Application Note Introduction Surface reconstructions within previously created models of the human masticatory system have lacked sufficient accuracy. This shortcoming is due primarily to the high irradiance dose delivered to the patient during computed tomography (CT) scanning. Recent research conducted at Kaunas University of Technology presents an original modeling technique based on data acquired with two different scanning systems. The geometrical parameters of the bony structures and roots of teeth were estimated using computed tomography, whereas teeth occlusal surfaces and gums were scanned with a 3D optical scanner. Imaging Hardware This research utilized a custom microscope equipped with large-aperture lenses for image formation, LED blue light illumination, a Ludl MAC 2000 XYZ stage, and a 12-bit Media Cybernetics CoolSNAP-Pro cf monochrome digital camera. The resolution of the 3D optical scanner in the X, Y, and Z directions ranged from 10 to 100 µm. Imaging Software Media Cybernetics Image-Pro Plus 6.3 with Stage- Pro was utilized for this work; Kaunas University of Technology researcher Dr. Rimas Surna has used Media Cybernetics software since 1996. The algorithms for XYZ stage control, the acquisition and processing of optical slices, CT image processing, surface coordinates measurement, and data array formation were all created with Image-Pro Plus. Dr. Surna notes that the software allowed him to automate the system so as to accurately measure the 3D coordinates of the gypsum models of dental arches and similarly to receive 3D coordinates from computed tomography images. Custom macros were designed to control Image-Pro Plus and Stage-Pro. Methods Automated sequence acquisition of optical sections Three-dimensional optical slices of occlusal surfaces of gypsum casts were acquired along the vertical Z axis (XY planes.seq). Figure 1.
