Said Burzynska: “There are sound
works all over the cottage, which
include things like an interactive
sculpture that only makes sound
when visitors approach.
“There are also paintings by the
musician Motoko Kikkawa.”
Kikkawa used vibrations of
her music to create a series of
watercolours, Burzynska said.
“We hope that the exhibition and
programme of sound-focused events
expand visitors’ perception of what
Charitable Trust
DRIVER EDUCATION
• From page 1
The club has grown over the
past year from 12 to about 60
members, he said.
Methven believed the
community centre may see the
club as a “revenue earner”.
He said the club has cash
reserves of about $50,000.
Bay Harbour News has seen
a transitional plan which the
community centre has for
the squash club building. It
includes reburbishing it and
exploring a new booking system
for the
courts.
Community
centre
president
Debbie Wolff
(left) said
it believed
the squash
club has been in breach of this
licence to occupy for “some
time” and as a result had a
formal notice of termination of
the licence to occupy.
She said the squash club had
formally challenged the notice
and requested arbitration
under the terms of the licence
to occupy.
“The centre intends to fully
participate in that arbitration
and will be represented by an
independent barrister,” she
said.
“The centre confirms that
squash and table tennis will
continue to be played at the
No date has been set for
arbitration.
Said Methven: “Building a
squash club these days is quite
hard. When you lose one, you
can’t replace it. That’s why
we’re fighting so hard.”
Methven fears the
community centre would
not provide the same level of
support to players if it took
over.
“Our membership drive
from 12 to 60, shows we’re
actively working within the
community,” he said.
“It’s amazing how much it
gets used.”
A year ago the squash
club’s former committee was
in the process of handing
the club and building to the
community centre, Methven
said.
“Six of us stood
up to refloat the club,
takeover and rebuild it to stop
MPCC from taking over,” he
said.
Police no closer to youths
who broke into Metro Mart
• By Daniel Alvey
POLICE APPEAR to be no
closer to catching the youths
who smashed their way into the
Sumner Metro Mart.
It comes after a retail chief
said police took too long to analyse
CCTV footage of the smashand-grab
raid at the dairy. Police
only started looking at the
footage 10 days after the raid.
The group four of youths
broke into the Wakefield Ave
shop at 3.50am on Saturday,
May 13, and targeted vaping
products.
Yesterday police said they were
still reviewing the CCTV footage
but would not say whether
any progress had been made
on the investigation.
Police
would not say
whether they
had spoken
to any of the
youths involved
in the break in
Greg
Harford
or if any arrests
had been made.
The owner
of the store said police have not
contacted her since she gave
them the CCTV footage last
Monday.
Retail NZ chief executive
Greg Harford was critical of the
investigation.
“Obviously a 10-day (to view
CCTV footage) delay is not ideal,”
Harford said last week.
“There is an issue over police
resourcing and we have to make
sure they have the resources they
need at a local level, as well as a
national level, to make sure they
can prioritise some of the retail
crimes they are seeing.”
Canterbury police chiefs
would not answer specific questions
from Bay Harbour News
last week about why it took 10
days for officers to look at the
CCTV footage and whether
resourcing was the reason for
the delay.
Harford acknowledged the police
national retail investigation
support unit, which has been
EVIDENCE:
CCTV
Footage
from the
Sumner
Metro Mart
break in
shows the
face of a
hammer
wielding
youth.
operating since May last year,
but wanted to see more officers
in the community.
“One of the things we are keen
to see is more police presence in
retail areas. If you have police
walking the beat, or in a patrol
car, that sends a message to the
community that the police are
there,” he said.
Harford said there also
needs to be more education
for primary aged school pupils
about the impact crime has on
the community.
“We are really keen to
see the Government step up,
and it is terrible to say this, but
there needs to be some real
education going out into the
community that it’s not okay to
steal, bash people and threaten
people.”
Science kit gets
tick of approval
KITTED OUT: Mila Hesp (left), Lacey McLeod and Nēka Mete
from Bromley School using the science kit.
A NEW SCIENCE teaching
resource has got a big tick from
Bromley School’s associate
principal Rebekah McLeod.
“It’s so easy to use,” she said.
“Very few teachers would have
the knowledge, time or resources
to bring something like this
together.”
Teachers using the House of
Science demonstration kit were
so keen on it, they did not want
to send it back. That problem has
been solved by Ferrymead Rotary
funding half the cost of an annual
subscription for the school.
A subscription gives the school
access to a library of 30-plus kits.
Each kit focuses on a different
theme, and contains information,
lessons and activities designed
around it.
House of Science New Zealand
was founded in 2013 by Chris
Duggan, a former biochemist
and secondary-school teacher.
She was concerned about the
lack of scientific knowledge of
students arriving at secondary
school – and decided to do
something about it. By creating
the kits, Duggan’s aim is to see
every child in New Zealand
become scientifically literate.
From There to Here
by Joe Bennett
A memoir from the award-winning New Zealand columnist, teacher,
and international bestselling author Joe Bennett
From Willingdon to Lyttelton, a memoir about love, learning and the journey to
thirty Joe Bennett is the author of countless columns, over twenty books, and
now, at long last, a memoir. From There to Here describes a childhood of fishing,
cricket, friends, a dog, some mild molestation and a few deaths. There’s the
long-haired gloom and vehemence of adolescence. There’s love and heartache,
an urge to write and a fruitless struggle against teaching for a living. Superbly
written, of course, and laugh-out-loud funny in places, but it’s also honest,
unsparing, unexpected and moving.
‘Every now and then in the twilight the door of the pub would open and emit
a great sough of smoke and light and adult laughter and it seemed the most
wonderful place in the world, the place you wanted to be.’
The Making of Another Major
Motion Picture Masterpiece
by Tom Hanks
A wildly ambitious story of the making of a colossal, star-studded, multimilliondollar
superhero action film, and the humble comic book that inspired it all.
Spanning 80 years of a changing America and culminating in the opening of the
film, we meet a colourful cast of characters including a troubled soldier returning
from war, a young boy with an artistic gift, an inspired and eccentric director,
a pompous film star on the rise, a tireless production assistant and countless
film crew members that together create Hollywood magic. Funny, touching, and
wonderfully thought-provoking, The Making of Another Major Motion Picture
Masterpiece offers an insider’s take on the momentous efforts it takes to make
a film. At once a reflection on America’s past and present, on the world of show
business and the real world we all live in.
There’s a Cure for This: A memoir by Emma Espiner
The striking debut memoir from award-winning doctor and writer, Emma Espiner.
“I graduated as a doctor in 2020 and arrived into the Covid-19 pandemic with my
ta moko on my arm, my hospital lanyard, my stethoscope and a purpose. I don’t
know why medicine felt like coming home. I had no right to have that experience,
but for some reason it fits. I keep thinking about what the Maori psychiatrist told
us in Gisborne, about how the tohu, once awarded, can never be taken back.
There are few things in life which are that emphatic. Better not f**k it up, eh.”
From award-winning writer Dr Emma Espiner comes this striking debut memoir.
Encompassing whanau, love, death, ‘90s action movies and more, Espiner
charts her life in a dozen poised, interconnected chapters, from her childhood
shuttling between a ‘purple lesbian state house and a series of man-alone rentals’
to navigating parenthood on her own terms; and from the quietly perceived
inequities of her early life to hard-won revelations as a Maori medical student
and junior doctor during the Covid-19 pandemic. Clear, candid, irreverent and
beautiful, these intimate, essayistic stories offer a moving examination of what
it means to be human when it seems like nothing less than superhuman will do.
This is Espiner at her best - and as you’ve never read her.
Honey, Baby, Mine by Laura Dern, Diane Ladd
Laura Dern and her mother Diane Ladd talk life, death, love
(and banana pudding)
A collection of deeply personal conversations from award-winning actress and
activist Laura Dern and the woman she admires most, her mother-legendary
actress Diane Ladd-that take readers on an intimate tour of their lives, sharing
their most honest conversations on love, life, success, and everything in between.
Award-winning actresses and mother-daughter duo Laura Dern and Diane Ladd
are the kind of women who draw strength from their lifelong friendships with
other women, and most of all, from each other. Ever since Laura was born,
the two have leaned on one another through the trials of everyday life and the
tribulations that come with even the most storied Hollywood careers. They were
always close, but when Diane developed a sudden illness, their relationship grew
even deeper. When a doctor prescribed long walks to build back Diane’s lung
capacity, the pair began taking strolls together every day. The result is a book that
will make you want to call your own mom-a testament to the intimacy that can be
achieved when we are brave enough to speak our truths to those we love most.
FARMERS ON Banks
Peninsula can draw a sigh
of relief – rooks have been
eradicated.
The last of the highly intelligent
pest bird has been cleared
from the Canterbury region by
ECan, through poisoned bait
and shooting.
Getting rid of the pest has
been no easy task, especially
considering rooks have no natural
predators in New Zealand.
“Rooks severely damage or
destroy newly emerging crops or
pasture,” ECan northern team
lead for biodiversity Matt Smith
said.
“They reached a high of 5559
with 50 rookeries in 1992.”
Banks Peninsula was found
to have the highest rook population.
“Rook numbers have been
monitored across Canterbury
since 1982,” Smith said.
“Following intensive control
work there were only six birds
left in 2012.”
Rooks live in nest-like rookeries
and do their worst damage as
a group.
“They are extremely intelligent
and quickly become wary
of the presence of people.
“When their numbers peaked,
the most severe impacts on
farms were caused by large
flocks of rooks. A flock can
damage or even destroy a newly
“Rooks prefer cereals at any
stage of growth and walnut
trees, so will target these. It
is unlikely an individual bird
would cause significant damage;
however, we are keen to avoid
new populations establishing in
the region.”
But the fight against rooks
may not be over.
Smith said the pests may
reinvade from the West Coast,
Marlborough or Otago.
Oystercatchers tagged
• By Heidi Slade
SOUTH ISLAND pied
oystercatchers are being tagged
on Southshore Spit Reserve to
track flight paths and aid in their
protection.
DOC, the city council,
Manaaki Whenua-Landcare
Research and BirdsNZ hope to
learn about the birds’ flight paths
to identify and protect their
stopover sites.
“They often use several stopover
sites en route to recharge or
feed. Protection of these sites will
be essential to enable their survival,”
said DOC science advisor
Emma Williams.
Nets are projected to catch
pied oystercatchers when they
flock on the beach. They are then
marked with bracelet-like flags
that fit around the birds’ leg, with
a unique combination of letters
and numbers.
Some are also tagged with a
small GPS device on their backs,
which communicates results
to researchers via a cellphone
network.
Highly mobile species like the
pied oystercatchers are challenging
to manage and protect.
Due to the current lack of
information, birds and bats like
them receive insufficient protection.
“We’re trying to get some
information to inform other
species like banded dotterel,”
Williams said.
SURVIVAL: Tags are being
used to help protect
oystercatchers. PHOTO: DOC
Because the oystercatchers are
larger than other similar species,
they can be more effectively
tagged, she said.
Sightings are the only way to
tell where a flagged bird has gone,
so DOC is asking the public to
report any pied oystercatchers
they see.
“The (GPS) tags are quite expensive,
we can only put so many
on,” Williams said.
The coloured, numbered flags
are cheaper but not GPS tracked.
“If people report sightings, we
are more likely to know what
the majority of the population is
doing,” Williams said.
sightings to DOC’s
FIVE enterprising year
13 students from Te Aratai
College have found a way
to share their cultural
awareness.
Tom Rhodes, Blake
Williams, Mark Lemon,
Kade Shrives and Connor
Armstrong have set
up a business called Decalify
Designs.
Working with the Young
Enterprise Scheme and the
YMCA, their intention is to
“make culture more visible”
by applying vinyl decals onto
windows and other surfaces.
The team completed their
first job at the school by
designing, producing and
applying room numbers to
buildings.
It is about to embark on its
first major project – a contract
to design, produce and
apply decals for the YMCA,
as part of its central city
redevelopment.
Decalify said it was
“extremely glad” to be
working with the 4C Centre
at the Y on its upcoming
projects.
The opportunity was
awarded to the students earlier
this year.
Decalify business mentor
Clark Williams said he has
been impressed with their
progress so far.
“Working with the team
at Decalify has been an
excellent experience.
Their quick learning, hard
work, fashion sense and
independence has made things
really easy.
“I would recommend them
for any job, big or small.”
Keep an eye out for their
work at Te Aratai College or
the YMCA, or get in touch
to find out more about their
services.
CHRISTCHURCH businessman
Frank Van Schaijik is now a
Knight of the Order of Orange-
He was awarded the Dutch
order of chivalry by the recently
appointed Netherlands Ambassador
to New Zealand at a King’s
Day party in Merivale earlier
this month, organised by Van
Schaijik himself to celebrate the
birthday of Dutch King Willem-Alexander.
Van Schaijik had no idea he
was getting the award until it
was announced at the event by
ambassador Ard van der Vorst.
“When all my family, the ambassador
and Mayor Phil Mauger
turned up I thought they were
just being sociable,” said Van
Schaijik.
“I was pretty chuffed to get it,”
he said.
The Order of Orange-Nassau
is a chivalric order dating back
to 1892, open to any person of
Dutch descent who has performed
acts of special merit in
society.
In conferring it, van der Vorst
acknowledged the contribution
Van Schaijik is managing
director at John Jones Steel and
a former chair of Steel Construction
CHRISTCHURCH City
Libraries is developing a hybrid
model for its Mobile Library
service.
“Over recent years the Mobile
Library has seen a decline in patronage,”
said city council head
of libraries and information
Carolyn Robertson.
“Our staff have engaged closely
with our Mobile Library users
and we think a hybrid model is
the best way forward to ensure
all customers can continue to
have free and equitable access to
library services.”
The hybrid model will offer
expanded outreach services and
a personalised service for those
who have difficulty travelling.
Targeted engagement conducted
with 110 current Mobile
Library customers showed one
third (32 per cent) visited another
library regularly or sometimes;
one third visited another
library when the mobile service
was off the road due to Covid-19
restrictions and 34 per cent did
not visit other libraries at all.
Two thirds of customers (64
per cent) indicated they would
visit a different library if the
mobile service stopped.
Robertson says the new
hybrid model would look to
offer a personalised service to
library customers who may be
housebound or have difficulty
travelling.
“This would allow them to
interact with a librarian who
knows their individual interests
and can cater to their needs.
“We’d also look to expand
our existing Outreach Services
to partner with a greater number
of retirement homes, rest
homes, pre-schools and social
housing providers. Setting up
small on-site libraries with
material that we can regularly
rotate is a proven and effective
way to provide a tailored service
for our customers.”
The city council is developing
a detailed plan to transition
the service from the current
schedule of stops to the new
hybrid model from July 1. It’s
expected to take 12 months to
fully implement the changes.
Sumner come from behind
to claim upset of the season
• By Jaime Cunningham
SUMNER HAVE pulled off the
biggest upset of the Metro premier
competition with a comeback 47-
36 win over Lincoln University.
Trailing 24-0 after 30min
against third-placed Lincoln, the
Wave were on course for their
fourth loss of the season on Saturday.
Head coach Gareth
D’almeida said they
didn’t have enough
possession in the first
40 minutes – and when
Sumner did have the ball
they weren’t playing to
their game plan.
But Sumner pulled
back the score to 24-14 by
the end of the first half.
“At halftime, we were
Gareth
D’almeida
able to talk about how we want to
play,” D’almeida said.
Tries were easier to come by in
the second half as Sumner gradually
cut Lincoln’s lead down with
five more tries.
D’almeida said Sumner’s ability
to play to their game plan in the
second half won them the match at
St Leonards Square.
“It was great to see the boys
together and re-group,” he said.
“Essentially it’s been our biggest
challenge of the season. When
you’re under pressure you can
either stick to what you’ve been
working on, or play it safe.”
The bonus-point win put the
Wave in sixth place on 21 points
with four round robin games left
to play. Just seven points separate
third-placed Lincoln University
from Burnside in 10th.
The competition takes a break
for King’s Birthday weekend.
Sumner will then challenge
table-topping University
for the DCL Shield at Ilam
Fields at 3pm on June 10.
It will be Sumner’s third
attempt to win the shield
this season. They lost to
Linwood 24-20 in round 1
and then went down 40-20
to Marist Albion in round 4.
Beating University at home
will be a challenge for Sumner, but
D’almeida believes the best is yet to
come from the Wave.
“I think we still haven’t seen the
best of Sumner yet,” he said.
The top eight teams qualify for
the premiership playoffs in July.
“Our main focus is the (playoffs).
Whatever way we can get through
is fine but I don’t think it matters
being say one or four (on the table).
“We just don’t want to be
scraping in.”
TREASURES FROM THE PAST 15
A warship and its walrus at Whakaraupō
FROM THE LATE 1700s
through to the early 1900s, the
British Royal Navy protected
the seas of the British Empire’s
Australasian colonies, until
the Australasia Station was
decommissioned and command
handed over to the Royal
Australian Navy in 1913.
Responsibility for the imperial
protection of Aotearoa New
Zealand and the islands of the
South Pacific then fell to the
Royal Navy’s New Zealand Naval
Force under the command of the
China Station.
In 1921, the naval force became
the New Zealand Division of
the Royal Navy with command
based at Wellington. While
traditionally manned by British
sailors, with the formation of the
New Zealand Royal Naval Volunteer
Reserves in 1926 the New
Zealand Division of the Royal
Navy became an increasingly
Kiwi affair.
A decade later, the division
was led by the Leander-class,
light cruiser HMS Achilles,
which took part in the annual
naval exercises of 1937 with
the RAN cruisers HMAS
Canberra, HMAS Australia
and HMAS Sydney, held in the
North Island’s Hauraki Gulf.
After the manoeuvres, the RAN
flagship Canberra, accompanied
by the Sydney, steamed for
Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour
to pay its third visit to the port.
The HMAS Canberra was a
Kent-class heavy cruiser built for
the RAN by John Brown & Co in
Clydebank, Scotland. Laid down
on September 9, 1925, she was
launched by Her Royal Highness
Princess Mary on May 31, 1927
and commissioned on July 9,
1928.
At 192m long, with a 20.8m
beam and 6.5m draught, she
displaced over 10,000 tonnes.
Powered by eight Yarrow
boilers feeding steam to four
Brown-Curtis geared turbines
driving four screws at 80,000
shaft horsepower (60,000 kW),
she had a range of 4200km at top
speed of 31 knots, and 19,000
km at 11 knots. With a full crew
of 710 men and an armament of
eight 8-inch guns in four twin
turrets fore and aft, along with
four 4-inch and another four
3-pounder guns, HMAS Canberra
was a formidable exemplar of
modern British naval power in
the interwar period.
The Canberra’s first visit to
Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour
in 1933 was welcomed by large
crowds of well-wishers, and
was almost as popular as the
celebrated visit of HMS New
Zealand some 20 years earlier.
Likewise, in 1937 the Canberra
was eagerly anticipated with
the Lyttelton Borough Council
co-ordinating with the
Harbour Board on planning
for the ‘entertainment of the
officers and men’ of the visiting
warships. These plans included
a dance and picnic, as well as an
outing to Ashley Gorge, a ‘hare
drive’ for the officers, and the
Canterbury Branch of the Navy
League organising an officers
ball in the Winter Garden.
The combined New Zealand
and Australian squadrons
had called at Wellington and
performed a ‘march past’ of
1000 men in the city on April
6, with the salute taken by
Governor General Lord Galway,
and welcomed by thousands of
cheering spectators.
Following this, and flying
the pennant of Commodore
Rear-Admiral Lane Poole CB
OBE, HMAS Canberra and
Sydney arrived at the Port
of Lyttelton on April 8, 1937
with Harbourmaster Captain
J Plowman piloting the RAN
flagship into berth, with the
assistance of the Tug Lyttelton,
on the east side of No. 2 Wharf.
The Rear-Admiral was
welcomed by the mayors of
both Lyttelton (Mr Sutton) and
Christchurch (Mr Beanland),
members of the Harbour Board
and Navy League, and officers
of the Southern Command and
RNVR.
Extra trains were scheduled
for that weekend on the Lyttelton
to Christchurch electric line,
to cater for the expected large
crowds as well as several
hundred Aussie sailors.
On Sunday, April 11, hundreds
of people queued to board the
two warships while many more
lined the wharves and other
vantage points.
A particular crowd pleaser
was the sight of the Canberra’s
Supermarine Walrus being
winched onto the wharf. A
recent addition to the warship,
the walrus was newly designed
and built at Supermarine’s
Woolston, Southampton UK
facility. Catapult launched,
with a novel all-metal fuselage,
the walrus would serve as a
reconnaissance, rescue, and antisubmarine
aircraft in the coming
hostilities that were already
looming large in Europe.
The 1937 visit of the ill-fated
Canberra and Sydney to
Lyttelton would be their last
before WW2 broke out.
On January 6, 1940, the First
Echelon of the Second New
Zealand Expeditionary Force
comprising almost 7000 men –
including 71 officers and 1311
men who had embarked at
Lyttelton the day before – sailed
from Wellington Harbour in
four troop transports escorted
by HMS Leander of the New
Zealand Division and HMAS
Canberra, bound for the Suez.
The Canberra would
subsequently see action alongside
Ocean in March 1941 with the
sinking of the German supply
ship Coburg and the tanker
Ketty Brøvig.
On August 9, 1942, HMAS
Canberra engaged Japanese
warships in the battle of Savo
Island in Guadalcanal and took
heavy fire with 84 killed. Judged
unsalvageable, she was scuttled
and sank to the depths of what
became known as ‘Ironbottom
Sound’.
On hearing of this loss, the
Deputy-Prime Minister of New
Zealand, the Honourable DG
Sullivan, conveyed the following
in a letter to the Australian
Government:
“The announcement of the
loss of the Canberra in battle in
the Solomon Islands has caused
profound regret throughout
the Dominion, and on behalf
of the Government and people
of New Zealand, I ask you to
convey their sincere sympathy
to the people of Australia, and
in particular to relatives of those
who so nobly lost their lives in
the course of duty.
“We share with you the
knowledge that their sacrifice
will not be in vain, but will
be fully redeemed by the final
triumph of our cause, in the
defence of which the armed
forces of the Commonwealth are
playing so gallant a part.”
Deadline Sale (unless sold prior) 3pm, Thu 15 Jun 2023
3 Bedrooms / 1 Living / 2 Bathroom / 2 Garage / 2 Off-street parks
Open homes: Sat/Sun 2-3pm bayleys.co.nz/5521230
Your chance to buy this ‘as is where is’ luxury
property on the lower slopes of Scarborough
Hill. The owner wants to move onto other
projects, leaving this highly desirable property
to be finished off by the new owner.
This designer home would sit well on the
Hollywood Hills, having been finished to the
highest standards - cedar cladding and ceilings,
bleached oak floors and enhanced by the very
best of fittings.
The lounge/kitchen area opens to a glass
balustraded deck with fully stacked doors,
capturing the intimate views over Pegasus Bay
and the Alps.
The kitchen has integrated appliances with
a granite island and state-of-the-art internally
illuminated cabinetry. Airconditioning, log
burner and remote control blinds help keep
control of the temperature. A large electronic
sunshade makes the deck a perfect place to
enjoy a wine in the afternoon.
The master bedroom is enhanced by a large
walk-in wardrobe and a beautiful fully tiled
ensuite. The family bathroom serves the other
bedrooms, one being a double, plus a smaller
room, perhaps a study, with access to the sauna
on the side deck.
Landscaped, professionally planted, terraced
areas provide more areas to take in that view!
A double garage and additional two car
parks make this a rarity on Scarborough’s
lower slopes. This hillside property offers an
unparalleled opportunity, combining luxury,
tranquillity and captivating vistas. Don’t miss
your chance to own this gem on sought-after
Scarborough Hill.
Mixed parentage for EV Polestar
VOLVO MADE its intentions
clear quite early when the world
was viewing the prospect electric
vehicles would be a big part of our
motoring future.
It indicated all Volvos would
be electrified by 2040 and what’s
more it has a major interest in an
offshoot company – Polestar –
which makes just electric vehicles
which are designed, engineered
and developed with Volvo’s input in
Sweden but are made in China and
are landing here in big numbers –
thanks to the demand Kiwi buyers
are placing on electric vehicles.
You can guarantee Polestar
will have a complete line-up of
models soon, but this evaluation
focuses on Polestar 2 which is a
mid-size, compact sedan already
scooping awards worldwide for its
style, performance and all-round
desirability.
The Polestar 2 lands here in
three specifications, the variants
depend on how much range or
performance you want. If you are
wanting to be part of the New
Zealand Government’s Clean Car
Programme discount scheme there
are two models that sit beneath the
$80k threshold.
The standard range model with a
single motor driving out the front
wheels will give you 478km on a
single charge, along with a 7.4sec
time to make 100km/h from a
standstill. It is priced at $68,990.
There is a long range single
motor model that will take
you 551km and has the same
acceleration time, it sits at $78,990.
The evaluation car was the rangetopping
$93,900 long range dual
motor model that supplies power
to all four corners, it has a range of
487km and will scorch through to
100km/h in 4.7sec.
As these latter figures suggest,
the Polestar 2 is a quick car and
provides the buyer with all of the
credentials he/she would want
in an EV. In terms of charging, it
is also as quick as its opposition.
According to the manufacturers it
will fast charge from a designated
charge port in 35min (10 to 80 per
cent), and if you are confined to a
three-pin domestic output like I
am you can expect it to take eight
hours to reach full capacity from
low charge.
I’m pleased to say the charge
cable has decent length at 6m,
that is important to me because
I have to run the cable from a
garage socket that isn’t close to the
evaluation car parking space on my
property. I was pleasantly surprised
with the charge times domestically,
I could charge from 60 to 90 per
cent in just a few hours. Polestar
recommends a constant maximum
of 90 per cent charge, that way
the batteries will be preserved for
longevity.
Driving the Polestar 2 doesn’t
require any special technique, the
drive functions are quite universal,
the drive selector is a push/pull
mechanism sited centrally on the
SLEEK: Sedan body style is elegant and sporty.
POLESTAR 2: Fully electric with four-wheel-drive and a range of almost 500km.
console between the two front
seats. Up front there’s a large
central touch screen display that
will navigate you to all of the
vehicle’s functions – safety, comfort
and convenience. This device is
very similar to what I recognise
from the Volvo models I’ve driven
recently. It incorporates a large
power supply readout that will
keep you well informed of battery
capacity and other associated
graphics including live-stream
Google maps.
Because of its position in the
market, the Polestar 2 has a sporty
focus and it drives quite keenly.
You can expect that early surge of
power as it shoots off the line, but
you can also feel an urgency that
doesn’t wilt right through until
after the speed limit is reached.
That’s something buyer will need
to be mindful of, the smooth, silent
and stealth-like way it accelerates is
quite entertaining, but speed does
sneak up quickly and the legal limit
arrives before you know it.
The major benefit of the
acceleration process is its
overtaking time, if you are heading
out on the highway and want to
make that manoeuvre you can
expect a 4.2sec time to make
120km/h from 80km/h.
I took the evaluation car on
much the same route I would
normally travel in a fossil-fuelled
car, heading west towards the
• Price – Polestar 2,
$93,900
• Dimensions – Length,
4606mm; width,
1859mm; height,
1479mm
• Configuration – Electrosynchronous
motors,
four-wheel-drive,
300kW, 660Nm, onespeed
automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 4.7sec
Waimakariri Gorge. Because of
its healthy range, it’s a car that
you can relax in and know that
it will take you on an extended
journey without fear of running
out of charge, especially now that
the charging infrastructure in the
region is growing rapidly.
When it comes time to tackling
the high country winding roads,
the Polestar 2’s handling balance is
biased towards sporty. The spring
and damper rates aren’t overly
firmed, but there is an emphasis
on controlling body movement
along with solid steering feel and
feedback, the latter can be chosen
from three weights – light to firm.
Riding on fabulous Michelin
Primacy tyres (245/45 x 19in)
there is a lot of contact with the
road surface and that is relayed
well to the driver. Turn-in is direct
and a massive amount of surety is
transmitted from the rear as the
force generated by the rear motor is
noticed throughout the vehicle.
While there is that emphasis on
performance, it doesn’t come at
the cost of occupant comfort. You
can guarantee the designers have
incorporated that factor in the
development process. The Polestar
2 is a compact car at just 4.6m,
but that does translate to interior
space. There is room to spread out,
and when you are inside there’s a
wealth of features that keep you
comfortable for every journey.
Of course, there is full leather
trim, the front seat occupants
get heated seats that are also
electrically adjustable. Other major
items of fitment include a full
panoramic roof, and I particularly
like not having a start/stop button;
when you choose “park’’ in the
transmission and leave the vehicle
it will all shut down and lock
automatically, restarting when the
driver returns to the seat.
You can guarantee Volvo will
be looking at how well Polestar is
accepted by today’s market, and
I’m in no doubt that it will set the
benchmark in key areas in terms of
sales and overall performance.
However, there are a lot of
electric vehicles in the global
market and neither company can
afford to drop the ball in terms of
staying competitive.
