VOLUNTEER PROFILE Local

VOLUNTEER PROFILE Local Volunteer Takes ‘Think Globally, Act Locally’ to Heart If you see Carol Scarratt out walking through Redwood Meadows, you might notice a cute spotted dog pin hooked on her shirt. “That’s a Dalmatian, the firefighter’s mascot,” she says with a sly smile. “I got it so people would ask me about it. Then I could tell them about the Firefighter’s Ball and our goal to raise money for a new rescue truck.” It’s Carol’s secret weapon. Not the dog pin. The smile. Carol has only lived in what she calls her “dream house” in Redwood for two years, but has been in the Bragg Creek area for 14. She sits on the Redwood Meadows Community Association and is an associate member of the Redwood Meadows Firefighters Association. She also helps out with all kinds of other events and organizations, including the Wild Rose Seniors Club and Right to Play. But it’s her latest project that gets her excited this time of year— the Kananaskis Country Christmas Arts and Crafts Sale. “I love all things Christmas,” she says. “It’s because I was born near Christmas. My mother named me Carol. She wasn’t very original. I guess it was better than the alternative. My father wanted to name me April, which didn’t make much sense.” Carol is looking for volunteers to help with the sale. She says it’s a perfect way to get involved in the community and adds, “People miss out on a lot when they don’t volunteer.” She says she takes the 12 CHATTER IN THE WOODS, October 2012 saying “Think globally, act locally” to heart, and encourages others to do the same. When she’s not raising money for charity or lending a helping hand, you might find Carol curled up with a good mystery novel. Or you may find her shopping for a new brooch, possibly one that will spark a conversation about ways to help a great cause. Tickets are still available for the Firefighter’s Ball, which will be held on Saturday, October 20 at the Bragg Creek Community Centre. The Kananaskis Country Christmas Arts and Crafts Sale will be held November 16, 17, and 18. If you’d like to help out, email Carol at carol@scarratt.org. Faith Mclean
