FITNESS Fitness: Make it Part of Your Life by Making it Fun I've recently come to realize that I dislike housework the way some people dislike exercise. I dread it and put it off for as long as possible, much the same way people who hate to sweat dread going to the gym or heading out for a run. But when I finally do tackle it, I get a sense of satisfaction, much the way most people do after they exercise. I don't think I'll ever love cleaning, but since it has to be done, I try to make it more fun than work. I put on my worst clothes and crank the music. In September, CBC introduced a new online radio stream that's all new wave music. Heaven for a child of the '80s. I found myself vacuuming to Depeche Mode and scrubbing the shower to Spandau Ballet's True. Before I knew it, the work was done – or as done as housework ever gets, which is why I dislike doing it – and I felt satisfied for as long as the floors stayed clean (approximately 15 minutes). What does this have to do with fitness? Well, you have to make it fun, whatever that means to you: salsa dancing in the living room, bowling in a league, walking with a friend... If you tell yourself that all you really need to get in shape is 20 minutes of exercise three times a week, chances are that true fitness will never be a part of your life. You gotta learn to love it! Set goals, but have fun working – and playing – toward them. If you're passionate about moving and see it as fun, then you'll find time to fit it into your life. Why not take a walk during the kids’ piano lessons or hockey practice? You'd rather read a book? Try reading on a treadmill or a recumbent bike. The possibilities for movement are endless, but you have to make a conscious effort to find them. Have fun experimenting!
