and then I got a beating

and then I got a beating where we were. I said ro my friend that we wete quite some distance off Our track for Little Harbor and that it would be a much shorter distance for us to go down in a northeast direction and try ro get to LaManche. So there and then we decided. Jim was thirsty all night and was eating snow ro quench his thirst which was making him worse. As we travelled we met a trail leading south-east from Island Cove ro Rantem in Trinity Bay where there had been a telegraph cable laid underground some years previous ro that. I knew about this and advised my friend what this trail was and where it led ro. This was not much of a consolation to him-thirsty. hungry and weary. But we plodded on. As we went further on we came to a large brook that was frozen over and there was a place in it about six or seven feet across and I held on to some bushes and began to jump to try and break the ice for Jim to get a drink of water to quench his thirst. The water had shrunk about six inches from the ice and when I jumped in gave way and I went to my knees in the water and lost my overshoes but Jim got his drink. Then we climbed up a hill from the side of Rapp Brook. We got into very thick woods which we could scarcely get through with our luggage. Jim said we would lie down until morning but neither of us had a match to make a fire so [ suggested that we walk on rather than give up and freeze ro death. We got clear of the woods and came out on open ground. Then the little village of LaManche came into view which gave us new life and vigor. thinking we would soon get shelter with the kind friends in their homes. At last we came almost to our doom as we were now approaching the old shafts of LaManche mines that had ceased working for probably one hundred or more years. We knew nothing until we caIUe to deep gulches in the ground which looked like small brooks that had dried up with the frost. We walked down the sloping sides but not to T. & M.
