Maintaining a 3 to 4

Maintaining a 3 to 4 inch layer of hardwood mulch on your roses will eliminate the need to fertilize the bushes with commercial or organic fertilizers. Even though roses are known as heavy feeders, we have found that maintaining a 3 to 4 inch layer of hardwood mulch (preferably containing shredded hardwood, outer bark and leaf tissue) replicates forest fl oor conditions. Gardeners will fi nd during the fi rst year the bottom inch of mulch will decompose into humus. If, at the end of the fi rst year, the gardener adds another inch of mulch on top of the existing layers it should take only 6 months for the next bottom inch of mulch to decompose. After the fi rst year, gardeners who have created this ‘living mulch’ cycle will only need to add 1 inch of hardwood mulch 2 times each year. (Hammond, 2002). This philosophy appears to be backed up by the comparison of the soil analysis from the Columbus Park of Roses. The beds all show a higher pH perhaps due to the alkaline reaction of the mulching of the years, and the nutrient balance is similar between the Earth kind beds which are never fertilized, and the traditional rose beds that receive two applications of granular fertilizer each year. Note: Additional foliar fertilization is applied to the traditional rose beds each time a spray application is made for disease control. 20 Bibliography Chapin, F. (1995).
