Bulletin for Jul-Aug 08 - Sertoma Club of Downtown Fort Worth
Downtown Fort Worth Sertoma Club Bulletin for July-August, 2008 District governor details Sertoma reorganization (Based on notes by Beverly Ditman) North Texas District Governor Bill Ditman (of Watauga) visited our club on July 29 th . He reported on the national convention and explained changes resulting from the merging of Sertoma International and the Sertoma Foundation. The merger has brought a change in the organization’s name and other structural and reporting changes. Name change: The word “International” has been dropped from the name. Now it is to be known simply as Sertoma (or Sertoma, Inc.). Membership: Membership in the national organization is in two categories: individual and club. Each member will have one vote at conventions, and each club will also have one vote. Each club’s president will designnate who is to cast the vote in behalf of the club. Each club will automatically receive an invoice for the club membership fee of $175. The fee must be paid if the club is to remain in good standing. A DVD containing the club manual, membership retention manual, and volunteer manual has been sent to each club president. New growth incentives for 2008-2009: “Second Chance GEM” award allows ANY club member to receive the GEM award by bringing in a new member during this year (only) and meeting the other requirements of the award. (Normally, only NEW members are eligible for the GEM award.) If you don’t already have a GEM, now is your “second chance.” Our treat Our club treated special needs students from Riverside Middle School to a year-end party on May 8. This year, they got to participate along with the other students. School nurse Nancy Howard reported, “We had a great time at Main Event! The teacher of the autistic students said they loved the games. They were happy with turning the wheels and watching the movement on the screen even though they weren't doing anything. The other kids loved it all. We had three activities - bowling, laser tag, and the games. We also got pizza for lunch.” A positive club growth medallion will go to clubs that show a net gain in membership during the year. Website access: Members can access non-public areas of the Sertoma website (www.sertoma.org) by logging on with their user name (last name and first initial of first name – for example, ditmanw) and password (membership number). However, new members since August, 2007, must set up their own user names and passwords. Community Service Matching Grant Program: For grants up to $2,500, 50% of the club’s members must support the Annual Fund. For grants up to $5,000, 100% of members must support the fund. New Sertoma officers are: Board Chairman - Woodrow Hudson, Carrollton, GA President - Carol Moore, Spartanburg, SC President Elect - Julie Hejtmanek, Topeka, KS Vice President - Dennis Lawler, Liberty, MO Treasurer - Debby Larsen, Northfield, MN Secretary - Steven Murphy, Kansas City, MO Regional Conference in North Texas: Governor Ditman reminded members that our district is to work with the Yellow Rose Club (Burkburnett) in hosting the Heart of America Regional Conference in Wichita Falls next April. The conference will abandon cowboy themes in favor of an English renaissance theme – “Renaissance on the River Red.” Bill promises we’ll have “lovely damsels, gallant knights, ladies in waiting, and men in tights.” (The big question, gentlemen, is, “What color tights will you be wearing?”) Bill said there was much interest in our conference at the convention.
