PRESIDENT’s Note
Dear Members and Friends
It is a great honour and privilege for me to take
over as President of RAS China in Shanghai. May
I first take this opportunity to sincerely thank
Peter Hibbard for his dedication and
commitment to resurrecting the Society and for
all he has done over the past four years. I am
very pleased to tell you that Peter will continue
his involvement and assist whenever possible –
thank you Peter.
I would also like to extend thanks to the newly
elected RAS Council and I have further good
news to share with you. We have had an offer
from a member to take up the position of
Honorary Secretary, who will be co-opted to
Council at our meeting in February. We now
have a larger Council with varying expertise
and new ideas – as Lindsay Shen said at our
recent Council meeting, “it’s amazing to see
so many people involved on Council… in
comparison to the newly formed Council in 2007 when there
were only a handful of people”.
It is also worth mentioning that we have other key members co-ordinating our activities who are not Council
members, but operate under the direction of Council and provide excellent service to our Society, for which
we are extremely grateful. In the fullness of time, we are hoping to take on some permanent support to deal
with the increasing administrative load and day to day running of the Society. I’m sure you will all be aware of
the amount of organization involved in all our activities and we really need to address this now, so that when
the time comes for Council members to move on, there is continuity of support for new people coming in.
Two other important people who have been with us from the very beginning, are Jennifer and Stephen, and we
are indebted to them for their continued valuable input.
The first item to address is our bulk e-mailing system. We are in the process of changing this to facilitate
quicker and easier communication with you. Please bear with us while we do this. Some names may
inadvertently fall by the wayside, so please do let us know if you think you are not receiving our mailings. We
will endeavour to make the transition as smooth as possible. Can I remind you that details of all our activities
are listed on our website.
As we celebrate the New Year 2012 and prepare to welcome the Chinese Year of the Dragon, we have managed
to squeeze in some RAS events and we do hope to see some of you at these during the first half of January.
Our first Lecture of the year is very timely indeed, given recent events in North Korea, and promises to be a
fascinating talk.
DECEMBER EVENTS
December started with a planned light schedule:
one RAS Weekender and one RAS Lecture, the
regular two meetings of the RAS Modern Chinese
History Study Group and a RAS Film Club
gathering. Late opportunities meant that we
included two further RAS Weekenders.
Heaven’s Embroidered Cloth was the topic of
Chris Hall’s talk in which he lead us through
some of his outstanding collection of Chinese
Antique textiles; ranging from a Han Dynasty
robe to the changes that occurred in both
dress and decorative fabrics in the Qing
period. (photos left)
Following the bus tour in November, some
members were able to take advantage of
Alvaro Leonardo’s special tour of the
Abelardo Lafuente Exhibition he directed
and produced. The exhibition while small was one of
the highlights of Shanghai’s exhibition programme. The
creativity of the exhibition presentation coupled with
excellent information and images made it a really cherry.
(photos right)
John Service, an American diplomat on service in China is
the subject of Lynne Joiner’s highly acclaimed
biography of the man, and was the topic of her
talk when she entertained us with many anecdotal
accounts of her experiences during the process of
writing this work. (photos right)
Anna Greenspan presented to us the research
and development of her work on Shanghai Retro
futurism and how our city has come to
look and be like the future of cities. Treating us
to some excellent footage she illustrated how our
ideas of aesthetics of the future have been
shaped and in turn influenced the aesthetic image
of Shanghai of today. (photos left)
SUZHOU CHAPTER: Bill Dodson, VP Suzhou,
welcomed Ian Gow, who shared his
research and enthusiasm of western
influences on Chinese Higher Education. (photos
Thank you to each of our wonderful presenters as
well as the co-ordinators of RAS Film Club and RAS
RAS FILM CLUB LAST MONTH… we saw Jiang Wen’s
Guizi Lai Le or “Devils on the Doorstep”, a film that we all
agreed is a complex and intelligent interpretation of the effects
of wars. Set at the close of the Japanese occupation of China
and filmed in black and white, members’ comments confirmed
that it is both a comedy and a tragedy, rendered with historical
accuracy and shockingly incisive on the ruin that war can bring.
Particularly impressive was the lead performance of Jiang Wen
who appears in almost every scene as well as directing. He is
thoroughly convincing as he moves through the story, battered
by his experiences. The final dramatic scene was cause for
discussion and whilst some of the audience were disturbed by
the violence in the latter part of the movie, others felt that it was
pitched at a level necessary for the intent of the movie. From
the comments I received it was another satisfying meeting.
THIS MONTH… continuing our exploration, the film for
January is Lou Ye’s Suzhou He or “Suzhou River”. Like “Devils
on the Doorstep”, it was made in 2000 but is very different in
form and content. Firmly set in Shanghai and filmed largely with
a handheld camera, it is a multi-layered love story that has
been compared to Hitchcock’s Vertigo and Wong Kar-Wai’s
Chungking Express but is also a reinvention of the ghost story.
Another award-winning movie by a director who has made
several banned in China movies (the last being Summer
Palace), it gives us a very different look at contemporary
Chinese film.
Book early to avoid disappointment.
Happy New Year!
THE FILM CLUB WANTS YOUR INPUT…
There are a huge number of Chinese movies worth watching
and deciding on a programme of films raises an array of
possibilities as to where to draw the parameters of what we
screen. From time to time we will ask members to give us their
opinion on whether a particular category of film should be
excluded or included from consideration. Thank you for the
responses you sent last month that told me you would like to
concentrate on Mainland films, supplemented by other Chinese
language films that are significant to the genre. This month we
are posing the third question:
DO WE WANT TO INCLUDE DOCUMENTARY FILMS?
China is considered to have made a huge contribution
internationally to this genre of film. Prolific in China, it would be
possible to have a club dedicated just to documentary.
The subject/content of the RAS Book Club choices will be around the
at: bookclub@royalasiaticsociety.org.cn
In some cases we are fortunate to have the authors with us here in
Shanghai and on these occasions we will take advantage for this special
privilege and invite the author to join us for the discussion of that particular
month’s book club. We will at all times take into consideration the
acquisition of the title (here in Shanghai) and try to get the publishers to
provide us with direct purchase opportunities.
We will commence the RAS Book Club on Monday January the 16 th with
Midnight in Peking a literary non-fiction work by Paul French who will join us
