THE MT Pleasant Squash Club has 

engaged a lawyer to stop it being kicked 

out of the building it has occupied for 

over 40 years. 

The club received a notice to 

terminate its licence to 

occupy from the Mt Pleasant 

Community Centre on April 

24 – giving it until tomorrow to 

get out. 

The club and community 

centre are in adjacent buildings 

in McCormacks Bay. 

The club’s legal move has seen 

tit for tat letters between its 

lawyer and a lawyer acting for 

the community centre in recent 

weeks. 

This has led to the notice to quit 

being put on hold until arbitration 

is held between the squash club and 

community centre. 

Squash club president Hamish 

Methven said the notice was a surprise. 

The club has grown over the past year 

from 12 to about 60 members, he said. 

Methven believed the 

community centre may see 

the club as a “revenue earner”. 

He said the club has cash 

reserves of about $50,000.

TWO YEARS of progress on 

the $50 million Te Kuru 

Wetlands has been captured 

in a new timelapse video. 

The timelapse from April 

2021 to February 2023, taken 

by contractors Grounds and 

Services Ltd, shows a section 

of Quarry Road Stream in the 

foreground, with Hoon Hay 

Basin in the background. 

City council acting head of 

three waters Brent Smith said 

the next stage of the 109-hectare 

network of basins and wetlands 

is on track to be completed 

and opened to the public 

this summer. 

“It has taken a huge amount 

of work from staff, contractors 

and community volunteers 

over the last few years to reach 

this point. It’s been an excellent 

collaborative effort,” said Smith. 

“We have a few more bridges 

and walking tracks to put in, 

and more planting days are 

scheduled.” 

The first stage, which includes 

a car park off Cashmere Rd, 

was opened to the public in 

November 2022. 

When complete, Te Kuru will 

feature 14km of walking and 

cycle tracks, as well as around 

110,000 trees and 600,000 native 

plants. 

Te Kuru has been designed to 

improve the city’s floodplain and 

stormwater management. The 

stormwater facility will be able 

to hold more than one million 

cubic metres of flood water in a 

big rain event, reducing the risk 

of flooding downstream. 

The Cashmere Stream 

Restoration Project is part 

of the overarching Te Kuru 

development. Work on a 2km 

stretch of Cashmere Stream has 

been under way since 2021 and is 

now nearing completion. 

“The Cashmere Stream 

Restoration Project has been a 

great example of what can be 

achieved through community 

collaboration. The Cashmere 

Stream Care Group and other 

groups have been instrumental 

in getting this project across the 

line,” said Smith. 

Care Group chair Ken Rouse 

says planning is under way for 

the final community planting 

day for the project. 

“We are hoping to plant 2000 

plants on Saturday, June 24 from 

9.30am-12.30pm. We encourage 

everyone to come along and help 

get the job done. 

“We are pleased to see how 

well the plants have taken off at 

the nearby Quarry Road Stream. 

This is a great example of what 

Cashmere Stream will look like 

soon as a result of all the efforts 

over the last few years,” said 

Rouse.

A NEW SCIENCE teaching 

resource has got a big tick from 

Bromley School’s associate 

principal Rebekah McLeod. 

“It’s so easy to use,” she said. 

“Very few teachers would have 

the knowledge, time or resources 

to bring something like this 

together.” 

Teachers using the House of 

Science demonstration kit were 

so keen on it, they did not want 

to send it back. That problem has 

been solved by Ferrymead Rotary 

funding half the cost of an annual 

subscription for the school. 

A subscription gives the school 

access to a library of 30-plus kits. 

Each kit focuses on a different 

theme, and contains information, 

lessons and activities designed 

around it. 

House of Science New Zealand 

was founded in 2013 by Chris 

Duggan, a former biochemist and 

secondary-school teacher. She 

was concerned about the lack of 

scientific knowledge of students 

arriving at secondary school – 

and decided to do something 

about it. By creating the kits, 

Duggan’s aim is to see every 

child in New Zealand become 

scientifically literate.

‘stick up’ for culture 

FIVE enterprising Year 13 

students from Te Aratai College 

have found a way to share 

cultural awareness. 

Tom Rhodes, Blake Williams, 

Mark Lemon, Kade Shrives and 

Connor Armstrong have set 

up a business called Decalify 

Designs. 

Working with the Young Enterprise 

Scheme and the YMCA, 

their intention is to “make 

culture more visible” by applying 

vinyl decals onto windows and 

other surfaces. 

The team has completed its 

first job at the school by designing, 

producing and applying 

room numbers in buildings. 

It is about to embark on its 

first major project – a contract to 

design, produce and apply decals 

for the YMCA, as part of its central 

city redevelopment. 

Decalify said it was “extremely 

glad” to be working with the 4C 

Centre at the Y on its upcoming 

projects. 

The opportunity was awarded 

to the students earlier this year.

Club says notice came out of the blue

squash club has been in breach 

of this licence to occupy for 

“some time” and as a result had 

a formal notice of termination of 

the licence to occupy. 

She said the squash club had 

formally challenged the notice 

and requested arbitration under 

the terms of the licence to occupy. 

“The centre intends to fully 

participate in that arbitration 

and will be represented by an 

independent barrister,” she said. 

“The centre confirms that 

squash and table tennis will continue 

to be played at the squash 

courts now and in the future.” 

No date has been set for arbitration. 

Said Methven: “Building a 

squash club these days is quite 

hard. When you lose one, you 

can’t replace it. That’s why we’re 

fighting so hard.” 

Methven fears the community 

centre would not provide the 

same level of support to players if 

it took over. 

“Our membership drive from 

12 to 60 shows we’re actively 

working within the community,” 

he said. “It’s amazing how much 

it gets used.” 

A year ago the squash club’s 

former committee was in the 

process of handing the club and 

building to the community centre, 

Methven said. 

“Six of us stood up to refloat 

the club, takeover and rebuild it 

to stop MPCC from taking over,” 

he said.

an advisor on the community 

centre project team. He is also 

a Squash Canterbury board 

member.

Skoda SUV packs powerful punch 

THERE OFTEN comes a point 

in time when you know the 

mode of transport isn’t fit for 

purpose. 

That happened to my wife and 

I just recently as our old sedan 

made way for a sport utility vehicle. 

The latter providing us with 

the entry and egress comfort we 

need as our hips give way to old 

age, notwithstanding modern 

engines are far more fuel efficient 

than our car that was designed 

over 20 years ago. 

Of course, being the petrolhead 

I am, I would have liked to 

have purchased something with 

a bit more punch from under the 

bonnet, but in terms of cost I had 

to be realistic about that. 

Had funds been available, we 

may well have purchased a Skoda 

Kodiaq – the RS version. It has 

all of the comfort ingredients we

were looking for in an SUV, but 

under the bonnet sits the 2-litre 

turbocharged engine that has 

found its way through a raft of 

Skoda, Seat, Cupra and Volkswagen 

product, notably the VW 

Golf GTi. 

The Kodaiq RS has 180kW and 

370Nm under the bonnet and it 

entices with free-revving nature 

and solid turbo boost. 

Skoda’s marketing slogan 

is ‘simply clever,’ and over the 

years I’ve mentioned many times 

the little niceties that make the 

brand stand out from others. In 

the Kodiaq RS it was the plastic 

wheel trims that sit inside the actual 

alloy wheel itself, which can 

be removed to give the vehicle a 

completely different look. It’s the 

first time I’ve seen that arrangement 

and, yes, it is clever.

range-topping RS will stretch 

some buyers’ budgets, but the entire 

Kodiaq range is there to lure 

buyers who want quality product 

at an affordable price. The entry

Of course, all models have the 

benefit of space, that is the way 

it is with the modern SUV, and 

the Kodiaq RS is no exception, 

there’s even seven seats, although 

the two rear seats that fold up 

out of the cargo section are really 

just for children or those very 

slight of build. 

It’s important to have balance 

underneath when you have 

healthy power outputs up front. In 

terms of performance it will accelerate 

to 100km/h from a standstill 

in 6.6sec and will make a highway 

overtake in 4.6sec (80-120km/h). 

Drive is distributed through 

a direct shift gearbox with 

seven distinct ratios, by the sheer 

nature of its design it is a quickchanging 

gearbox that doesn’t 

put any unnecessary load on the

real dynamo, it is also one of the 

most pleasing in today’s market, 

thrilling with its potential and 

sound, the automatic downshift

an 8.3-litre per 100km/h combined

The Kodiaq RS stands up to

cross-country model, but it will
