Pages Rd bridge, and
delves into the history
of bridges in the area
WE ARE not far from seeing
the concept plans for the new
Pages Rd bridge, out for public
submission in July-August.
This will be one of the most
important constructions for
the east in many years and will
shape the design of the immediate
roads in and around it – and
will possibly incorporate a
welcome sculpture.
As well as pushing the
case for our locals, the New
Brighton Residents Association
occasionally dabbles in a bit
of lightweight history about
the area. Here, we feature local
bridges feeding people into the
coastal suburb from the time
the first European settlement
ships arrived in Lyttelton.
Seaview Rd or Pages Rd
bridge
A route was put through
by the privately owned
New Brighton Tramway
Company. Horse trams ran
from Christchurch to New
Brighton between 1887
and 1905, after which the
Christchurch Tramway Board
took over and electrified the
line.
At the entrance a gate
reinforced the company’s
ownership of the structure,
where a toll was collected for a
short time before it became a
public thoroughfare.
The company’s line was later
opened as a public road, Pages
Rd, named after tramway
company director, Joshua Page
(1826-1900).
The original Seaview or Pages
Rd bridge was a flat bridge. It
was replaced at the beginning
of the 1930s by the present high
bridge. This was designed by H.
F. Toogood, father of television
personality Selwyn “money or
the bag” Toogood.
The hump in the bridge
came at the behest of Richard
Bedward Owen, a tailor and
conservationist, known as
‘River Bank Owen’, who argued
that boats could come ‘sailing
or steaming with the tide’ via
the Estuary to Christchurch.
They never have, but there are
plans to run wakas to New
Brighton via the Ōtākaro/Avon
River Corridor.
Bower bridge
Bower bridge by the Bower
Tavern first opened in 1876
(right). The present Bower
bridge was completed in 1942.
In the 1920s and 1930s the
inter-city bus service pioneered
transport on Wainoni Rd,
across the Bower bridge to
North New Brighton and New
Brighton. It was a private service,
very popular and cheap,
and ran on the smell of an oily
rag. It was managed and owned
by Intercity Motors with headquarters
on Bowhill Rd.
The bus company was
in competition with the

Weaving together culture and people
TE ARATAI College students
Destiny Martin and Ben
Broomhall, both 17, have a
simple mission: To inspire and
promote Māori business, giving
people a greater understanding
of Māori culture.
They have set up a company
called Raranga Kite. Destiny,
who is the chief exective, said
she saw a gap in the market and
wanted a way to inspire young
Māori. Her team came up with
harakeke baskets as packaging
for traditional Māori treasures.
“What makes our product
more unique than traditional
gift baskets is that it reinforces
other aspects of my culture,
by implementing taonga such
as wood and bone carvings,
pounamu and feathers into every
basket,” she said.
“He raranga o te iwi – to weave
together the people, no matter
your background, culture, or
religion.”
Raranga means to weave, and
kite means basket, so to weave
the basket. Harakeke is the
flax used in traditional Māori
weaving.
Ben is the company’s finance
director. He wanted to expand

in the Young
Enterprise
Scheme, which
gives teenagers
practical business
experience, Destiny and Ben
drew on their backgrounds and
experience to come up with the
innovative business idea.
Staying true to its mission
Raranga Kite recently partnered
with another small Christchurch
business, Sacred Aroma, which
uses kawakawa (pepper tree, a
traditional Māori medicine) as a
key ingredient in their lip
balms.
The team has surveyed
potential customers from the
tourism market, but hope to
find a niche with corporate
customers as well. Feedback
from the tourism market was
overwhelmingly positive, with
customers happy to pay a
premium for the product.
Te Aratai College business
teacher Lukas Davidson said the
college wanted
to encourage
students to
explore their
language,
identity and
culture.

Red and Black whitewash
CONTEST: Christchurch under-18 Black’s wing defence
makes an intercept during their win over Southland
Country at the King’s Birthday tournament on Sunday.
SUCCESS: The Christchurch under-16 Red and Black teams won all of their matches
before meeting in the Tupuranga championship final on Monday.

The three-day
tournament was first
played last year. It is
primarily focused on
the development of

the Tupuranga under-16 netball
championship.
The A grade final was contested
by two of the city’s representative
teams with Christchurch
Red taking out the top grade,
beating Christchurch Black 29-16
at Pioneer Stadium on Monday.
Christchurch White won the B
grade with a 33-27 victory over
North Canterbury.
The Red and Black teams both
went through pool play unbeaten
over the weekend before encountering
each other in the final.
The White team suffered only
one loss all weekend, going down
33-24 to Selwyn B.
players who wouldn’t
otherwise have opportunities
to play in
representative tournaments.

It was part of a busy weekend
for Christchurch Netball Centre
with the annual under-18 King’s
Birthday tournament played at
Bishopdale YMCA on Sunday.
Although there were no finals,
the two under-18 Christchurch
teams had some big wins and
close losses.
The under-18 Red team
beat Central Lakes 35-20 and
Marlborough 44-18, but lost to
Invercargill (39-33) and Dunedin
(48-35).
Although the under-18 Black
team only managed one win
over Southland Country (37-21),
they suffered close losses to
Invercargill (29-27) and Central
Lakes (25-23).
Both under-18 teams will
contest two tournaments later
this month before heading to the
Celebration Box Netball New
Zealand under-18 championships
in Hamilton from July 10-13,
where Christchurch Red will
defend their national title.

A brief history of bridges out east
residents the long journey up to
Central Brighton. The present
bridge was opened in 1981.

South Brighton bridge,
Bridge St
Opened in 1927, it was the
result of the work of New
Brighton Borough councillor,
Herbert Arundel Glasson.
Glasson lived in South
Brighton and persuaded fellow
residents to pay extra rates to the
New Brighton Borough Council,
providing a South Brighton
bridge was built.
The resulting small wooden
bridge saved South Brighton
Estuary bridge
Who has crossed this bridge ?
Nobody, as the Estuary
bridge has never been built despite
proposals and plans by various
people over the years.
James Mawson Stewart (1883-
1949) was born in New South
Wales and came with his family
to Christchurch as a small boy.
He began his working life as a
clerk and later cashier at a venerable
institution, the Christchurch
Gas Company.
While still a young man, he
set up the firm of accountants,
Stewart Beckett and Co. He went
on to earn the reputation as ‘one
of the best-known businessmen
in Christchurch’.
In his youth, Stewart and his
brother Arthur bached at New
Brighton, and retained a commercial
interest in the area.
During World War 1, they were
major figures in the South New
Brighton Land Company, which
consisted of small shareholders,
and the Southshore Syndicate,
whose members were substantial
businessmen.
The two companies bought the
wasteland where the suburb of
Southshore now stands and sold
it at a low price. It was stipulated
that every purchaser of a section
should donate 15 pounds towards
the cost of a bridge to take people
across the Estuary to Sumner.
Seven hundred pounds was
collected, plans drawn up and a
track – the future Rockinghorse
Rd – hacked out of the wilderness.
Amid the battles of trying to
find investors, residents on the
Redcliffs/Moncks Bay side were
less enthusiastic about hordes of
‘uncouth’ travellers coming from
New Brighton.
After the war, the company and
syndicate were wound up as momentum
waned. James continued
to hope that the area might
progress, and in 1927 attempted

to persuade the Government the
bridge should be erected at public
expense.
The property owners became
very disillusioned with the
outcome and many sold up and
moved on.
However, the new Pages Rd
bridge will be delivering greater
numbers of people in and out of
the wider coastal area.
The New Brighton Residents
Association has tossed in a few
concept ideas for a sculpture
signifying entry into our coastal
paradise to get the ball rolling.

These winter warmers are full of flavour
Make the most of the
season’s richest flavour
pairings with these two
delicious double acts
Return the balls to the pan,
among the onions and figs,
cover with a lid and bake for 30
minutes. Spoon into bowls.
Pork and halloumi balls
Blackberry and apple
trifles
Mince lets us to take dinner
in so many directions. With
these meatballs, it is worth
letting them rest for a while in
the fridge after shaping, as they
are less likely to fall apart during
cooking. Turn them carefully
in the pan, letting them form a
golden crust on the base before
moving them. Use a coarse
grater for the halloumi, so the
cheese melts and seasons the
pork as it cooks.
Serves 3-4
Ingredients
3 spring onions
1 Tbsp and a little more of
groundnut oil
2 cloves garlic
grated zest of 1 lemon
2 small red chillies
4g dried mint
450g coarsely minced pork
200g halloumi
For the figs:
2 medium onions
2 Tbsp groundnut or olive oil,
for frying
1 Tbsp thyme leaves
6 small figs
TASTY: Follow up these hearty meatballs with a warming

Directions
Cut the spring onions into thin
rounds, then cook them in the
oil in a shallow pan for 5 minutes,
until soft and translucent.
Peel the garlic and crush to a
paste, then stir into the spring
onions. Add the grated zest and
a generous grinding of salt and
pepper. Finely chop the chillies,
then add to the onions and mint
and remove from the heat.
Add the minced pork to the
seasonings. Coarsely grate
the halloumi, then add to the
mixture and mix well. Shape the
mixture into balls about the size
of a golf ball and put in the fridge
for 20 minutes.
Warm the oil in a shallow
nonstick pan, add some of the
pork balls and let them colour
one side then gently roll them
and brown the other. Move the
balls around from time to time
to brown evenly, then transfer to
an ovenproof dish. Repeat with
the rest of the balls.
Preheat the oven to 180 deg C.
Peel and finely chop the onions,
then add to the vacated pan,
with a little more oil if necessary,
and fry them for 10-12 minutes
until they are starting to soften.
Roughly chop the thyme, then
add to the onions, then roughly
chop the figs and also add them.
Cook the apples using only a
little water, letting them simmer
to a soft and fluffy puree. Add
the blackberries at the end, so
they don’t overcook, mashing
them a little so their juices lightly
bleed into the apples. Give the
sherry and orange juice a little
time to soak into the sponge
fingers to make sure they are
thoroughly saturated. Like most
trifles, the longer the layers of
fruit, sponge and cream are
together, the better the result.
Serves 4
Ingredients
150g sponge fingers or ratafia
biscuits (almond macaroons)
80ml dry sherry
Juice of 2 medium oranges
For the apples:
1.5kg cooking apples
100ml water
2 Tbsp caster sugar
200g blackberries
For the cream:
150g double cream
125g mascarpone
1 Tbsp icing sugar
A few drops of vanilla extract
Directions
Peel the apples and cut into
large chunks. Put them in a nonreactive
saucepan with the water
and sugar, set over a moderate
heat and bring to the boil. Lower
the heat and leave for 10-15
minutes, with the occasional stir,
until the apples have become
soft enough to mash to a puree.
Stir in the blackberries and
crush lightly with a fork. Lightly
whip the cream until it starts to
thicken. It should be just thick
enough to slide off the spoon.
Stir in the mascarpone, icing
sugar and vanilla extract.
Break up the sponge fingers
and put them in the bottom of
four large glasses or glass bowls.
Mix together the sherry and
orange juice, then pour over the
sponge fingers and leave to soak
in.
Spoon the apple and
blackberry mixture on top of the
sponge. Place a spoonful of the
mascarpone cream on top of the
apple, leave for an hour in the
fridge to settle before eating.

Volvo’s EV SUV– best of many worlds
MY FIRST evaluation drive was
in 1988. I remember it vividly, it
was a five-cylinder petrol-fuelled
Audi 90 and I picked it up from
the Archibalds showroom.
Nearly 35 years later, my
last evaluation drive was also
presented to me from staff at
Archibalds, not an Audi but a
Volvo – a C40 Recharge – a fully
electric vehicle to be exact.
The C40 Recharge is a crossover
wagon, one that has a coupetype
shape but tall enough to
be a sport utility vehicle. But its
main claim is that of its propulsion,
it has no petrol engine, it
has a motor over the front axle
and drives through the front
wheels only.
A point to note with the C40’s
driveline and platform is it
shares much componentry with
that of the Polestar 2; Volvo has
a major interest in the Chinese
company. That will allow buyers
a choice, the prices are similar
at $85,900 (C40 Recharge) and
from $68,990 to $93,900 for the
Polestar 2, yet you can make
the decision of whether a sedan
type body structure or an SUV
is right for you. It is interesting
to note here the C40 Recharge
won’t get you any Government
Clean Car Programme rebate.
Inside, the C40 Recharge has
immediate similarities with
Polestar as well, the large screen
graphics and interface are almost
identical. Specification levels on
the Volvo are extensive and, of
course, you get all the clever safety
kit that Volvo has long been
revered for in all of its models.
Volvo has indicated its intention
to produce electric models
only by 2030 and with Polestar’s
input that would seem quite
achievable. The C40 Recharge is
the first full EV out of the blocks
and it is a worthy trendsetter.
Volvo claims 170kW of power
and 330Nm of torque, both
outputs available instantaneously.
That’s where EVs come
into their own, they are dynamic
and forceful. Volvo also claims
a 7.4sec standstill to 100km/h
time. (If that’s not quick enough
for you, there is a higher output
Ultimate model at $100,900,
which cuts out that time in
4.7sec.)
And the C40 Recharge in
entry-level form still gets great
range. It can travel up to 438km
on a single charge, there’s a
69kWh battery system sitting
in the platform of the car, and
that is a lot of capacity. Bear in
mind most EV manufacturers
recommend 80 per cent as being
full capacity, in a bid to increase
battery longevity.
It’s the little out of the box
ideas that I really liked in the
C40 Recharge. One in particular
is the textured map of Gothenburg
that is inlaid into the dash
panel in front of the passenger
seat. If you are ever in Sweden it
is something you could relate to.
As mentioned, this is my
last motor vehicle evaluation.
Throughout the last 35 years I’ve
been on an incredible journey,
I’ve driven many thousands of
the latest and greatest models
and it’s been an absolute thrill
and an experience I have never
tired of as I head into retirement
from the publishing industry.
