Third time lucky
• By Jaime Cunningham
FOR THE third time this
season, Sumner will have the
opportunity to get their hands
on the DCL Shield – this time
against table-leaders University
on Saturday.
Coming off the back of a
rest week following their 47-36
comeback win over third-placed
Lincoln University, the Wave
have the chance to climb into
the top four of the Metro
Premier competition with a win
in round eight.
The Wave have already
challenged the shield in round
one against Linwood (24-20
loss) and in round four against
Marist Albion (40-20).
Although beating University
at home will be a challenging
feat, Sumner head coach Gareth
D’almeida is primarily focused
on the improvement of his
team.
“Each opposition is different,
but it’s more about us than any
opposition,” he said.
“The most exciting thing is to
improve and as a team,
you want to get better each
week.”
With four round robin games
remaining, Sumner sit sixth
with 21 points – just three
behind third-placed Lincoln
University (24).
But D’almeida believes his
team’s best is yet to come.
“Our main focus is the second
round. Whatever
way we can get through is
fine.” • Turn to page 4
A HEATHCOTE Valley book
editor and author has become
a member of the New Zealand
Order of Merit.
The King’s Birthday Honour
was for Anna Rogers’ services to
literature.
It is given for meritorious
service to the Crown and
nation or for distinguished
contributions.
Currently
working as a
freelance book
editor from her
home, Rogers
said the award
feels strange.
“The thing
about editing is
Anna Rogers
that no one sees
the work. It’s a back-room job. It
feels quite strange to be out of the
back-room.”
As the author of more than 10
books, Rogers is most proud of
writing, With Them Through
Hell, which was shortlisted in the
2019 Ockham New Zealand Book
Awards.
“[Being shortlisted was] a
really, really good experience,” she
said.
The book tells the stories of
New Zealand medical personnel
during World War 1.
INNOVATIVE:
Raranga Kite,
a company
formed by Te
Aratai College
students Destiny
Martin (left) and
Ben Broomhall,
aims to
promote Māori
business and
culture as part
of the Young
Enterprise
Scheme.
Weaving together culture and people
TE ARATAI College students
Destiny Martin and Ben
Broomhall, both 17, have a
simple mission: To inspire and
promote Māori business, giving
people a greater understanding
of Māori culture.
They have set up a company
called Raranga Kite. Destiny,
who is the chief exective, said
she saw a gap in the market and
wanted a way to inspire young
Māori. Her team came up with
harakeke baskets as packaging
for traditional Māori treasures.
“What makes our product
more unique than traditional
gift baskets is that it reinforces
other aspects of my culture,
by implementing taonga such
as wood and bone carvings,
pounamu and feathers into every
basket,” she said.
“He raranga o te iwi – to weave
together the people, no matter
your background, culture, or
religion.”
Raranga means to weave, and
kite means basket, so to weave
the basket. Harakeke is the
flax used in traditional Māori
weaving.
Ben is the company’s finance
director. He wanted to expand
Ben
Broomhall
his knowledge
of both business
and Māori
culture in
Christchurch.
Competing
in the Young
Enterprise
Scheme, which
gives teenagers
practical business
experience, Destiny and Ben
drew on their backgrounds and
experience to come up with the
innovative business idea.
Staying true to its mission
Raranga Kite recently partnered
with another small Christchurch
business, Sacred Aroma, which
uses kawakawa (pepper tree, a
traditional Māori medicine) as a
key ingredient in their lip
balms.
The team has surveyed
potential customers from the
tourism market, but hope to
find a niche with corporate
customers as well. Feedback
from the tourism market was
overwhelmingly positive, with
customers happy to pay a
premium for the product.
Te Aratai College business
teacher Lukas Davidson said the
college wanted
to encourage
students to
explore their
language,
identity and
culture.
“Destiny as a
Māori learner
has found a way
to affirm her
Lukas
Davidson
culture whilst creating a unique
business idea,” he said.
GREAT AUTUMN READS AT PAPERPLUS FERRYMEAD
From There to Here by Joe Bennett
A memoir from the award-winning New Zealand columnist, teacher,
and international bestselling author Joe Bennett
From Willingdon to Lyttelton, a memoir about love, learning and the journey to
thirty. Joe Bennett is the author of countless columns, over twenty books, and
now, at long last, a memoir. From There to Here describes a childhood of fishing,
cricket, friends, a dog, some mild molestation and a few deaths. There’s the
long-haired gloom and vehemence of adolescence. There’s love and heartache, an
urge to write and a fruitless struggle against teaching for a living. Superbly written,
of course, and laugh-out-loud funny in places, but it’s also honest, unsparing,
unexpected and moving. ‘Every now and then in the twilight the door of the pub
would open and emit a great sough of smoke and light and adult laughter and it
seemed the most wonderful place in the world, the place you wanted to be.’
The Making of another Major Motion Picture
Masterpiece by Tom Hanks
A wildly ambitious story of the making of a colossal, star-studded, multimilliondollar
superhero action film, and the humble comic book that inspired it all.
Spanning 80 years of a changing America and culminating in the opening of the
film, we meet a colourful cast of characters including a troubled soldier returning
from war, a young boy with an artistic gift, an inspired and eccentric director,
a pompous film star on the rise, a tireless production assistant and countless
film crew members that together create Hollywood magic. Funny, touching, and
wonderfully thought-provoking, The Making of Another Major Motion Picture
Masterpiece offers an insider’s take on the momentous efforts it takes to make
a film. At once a reflection on America’s past and present, on the world of show
business and the real world we all live in.
LAYBY WELCOME
Author most proud of
WW1 centenary book
•From page 1
“[Being shortlisted
was] a really, really good
experience,” she said.
The book tells the
stories of New Zealand
medical personnel during
World War 1.
“For the centenary of the
First World War, a number of
histories were commissioned
on various topics and I got
the job of writing the volume
on the medical services
during the war,” Rogers said.
This included doctors,
nurses, medics, stretcherbearers,
masseurs and also
veterinarians who looked
after war horses.
The book took two years
to write and involved a
large amount of research,
collecting illustrations, firsthand
accounts and other
information, she said.
Rogers said her interest
in history and non-fiction
comes from thinking about
how things came to be.
“You write of your place
and from your place,” she
said.
“I’m just interested in how
we got to be where we are.”
When Rogers looks back
over her years in the book
business, she recalls
the good friends she has
made such as New Zealand
writer and novelist Owen
Marshall.
Rogers has edited
Marshall’s work for
some time, including his
short story collection
Return to Harikoa Bay and
HONOURED:
Anna Rogers’
book, With
Them
Through
Hell, was a
finalist in the
general
non-fiction
category of
the 2019
Ockham
New Zealand
Book Awards.
novel Harlequin Rex.
But she is looking to write
more of her own work.
“As an editor, you’re
obviously working on other
people’s work,” Rogers said.
“I’ll still keep doing editing
and I’d like to do some
writing too. I Certainly love
doing it.”
DCL Shield
an ‘extra
incentive’
for team
• From page 1
This season, the finals format
for the premier competition
is slightly different, with eight
teams progressing instead of six.
The top four play qualifying
finals and have an extra ‘life’ if
they lose, while teams placed
fifth to eighth play each other in
elimination finals before taking
on the losers of the qualifying
finals.
Last year, the Wave managed
just one win in the round robin
and failed to make any of the
premiership finals. However,
they finished on a high by making
the plate final against University,
which they lost 39-19.
With remaining games against
Christchurch, New Brighton
and Burnside following round
eight, the Wave will be after as
many wins and bonus points as
possible to make the top four.
Gaining the DCL Shield may
not be the top priority for the
Wave, but D’almeida said the
silverware is a second incentive
for the team this week.
“When you’ve got those extra
things, it adds a bit of flavour.”
Clubhouse future up to community
• By Heidi Slade
A WATER-SPORTS education
centre or a cafe are two of more
than 50 ideas for how a historic
yacht and motorboat clubhouse
could be re-purposed for
community use.
The Governors Bay Jetty
Restoration Trust was granted
resource consent in March
to build a platform for the
clubhouse and move it beside the
Governors Bay jetty, from where
it is currently being stored by the
Lyttelton Port Company.
The trust wants to restore
the 100-year-old building, and
has held a second community
workshop to help brainstorm
ideas.
Trust secretary Louisa Eades
said a lot of the ideas, while
different, are complementary.
“For example, a training room
for water safety can also be
used as a classroom for visiting
schools and a space to hold
workshops,” she said.
“The next steps are for the trust
to go through all the ideas and
put together a business case so
that we have a clear description
of the strengths, weaknesses,
opportunities and threats for the
repurposed building, and a plan
for how we will manage it.”
The trust hopes to start
working on a draft business case
over the coming months, which
will help guide its decisions,
IDEAS: The Governors Bay Jetty Restoration Trust has held the second of two community
workshops on how to repurpose the old yacht and motorboat clubhouse.
Eades said.
“We are really keen for
whoever is interested to be part
of the conversation, as ultimately
the community is going to be the
users of the building.”
The community’s ideas
will inform the design of the
platform and the restoration of
the historic building, which was
originally the Canterbury Yacht
and Motor Boat Association
clubhouse.
“It’s great to see the amount
of interest and enthusiasm there
is for this project, not just at
the workshops but through our
conversations and interactions
with different people around Te
Whakaraupō, Lyttelton Harbour
and bays,” said Eades.
“Someone described this
project as ‘giving meaning to
the jetty’.”
HAVE YOUR SAY: How do
you think the clubhouse
should be used? Email
your view in 200 words or
She said the workshop brought
up ideas she had not thought of
before, like using the clubhouse
as an assembly place for walking
tours.
“These walking tours are
very popular among people in
Christchurch, who are often
delighted to discover that they
have such an amazing area in
their backyard.”
While Eades does not know
exactly when the clubhouse will
be moved to Governors Bay, she
is optimistic.
“I’m always an optimist, but I
would like to have the platform
built and the building moved
within the next year so that it’s
not taking up Lyttelton Port
Company’s storage area and we
can start working on it.
“Once it has been moved, work
can happen over time, as money
and volunteers’ availability
allow,” she said.
Volvo’s EV SUV– best of many worlds
MY FIRST evaluation drive was
in 1988. I remember it vividly, it
was a five-cylinder petrol-fuelled
Audi 90 and I picked it up from
the Archibalds showroom.
Nearly 35 years later, my
last evaluation drive was also
presented to me from staff at
Archibalds, not an Audi but a
Volvo – a C40 Recharge – a fully
electric vehicle to be exact.
The C40 Recharge is a crossover
wagon, one that has a coupetype
shape but tall enough to
be a sport utility vehicle. But its
main claim is that of its propulsion,
it has no petrol engine, it
has a motor over the front axle
and drives through the front
wheels only.
A point to note with the C40’s
driveline and platform is it
shares much componentry with
that of the Polestar 2; Volvo has
a major interest in the Chinese
company. That will allow buyers
a choice, the prices are similar
at $85,900 (C40 Recharge) and
from $68,990 to $93,900 for the
Polestar 2, yet you can make
the decision of whether a sedan
type body structure or an SUV
is right for you. It is interesting
to note here the C40 Recharge
won’t get you any Government
Clean Car Programme rebate.
Inside, the C40 Recharge has
immediate similarities with
Polestar as well, the large screen
graphics and interface are almost
identical. Specification levels on
the Volvo are extensive and, of
course, you get all the clever safety
kit that Volvo has long been
revered for in all of its models.
Volvo has indicated its intention
to produce electric models
only by 2030 and with Polestar’s
input that would seem quite
achievable. The C40 Recharge is
the first full EV out of the blocks
and it is a worthy trendsetter.
Volvo claims 170kW of power
and 330Nm of torque, both
outputs available instantaneously.
That’s where EVs come
into their own, they are dynamic
and forceful. Volvo also claims
a 7.4sec standstill to 100km/h
time. (If that’s not quick enough
for you, there is a higher output
Ultimate model at $100,900,
which cuts out that time in
4.7sec.)
And the C40 Recharge in
entry-level form still gets great
range. It can travel up to 438km
on a single charge, there’s a
69kWh battery system sitting
in the platform of the car, and
that is a lot of capacity. Bear in
mind most EV manufacturers
recommend 80 per cent as being
full capacity, in a bid to increase
battery longevity.
It’s the little out of the box
ideas that I really liked in the
C40 Recharge. One in particular
is the textured map of Gothenburg
that is inlaid into the dash
panel in front of the passenger
seat. If you are ever in Sweden it
is something you could relate to.
As mentioned, this is my
last motor vehicle evaluation.
Throughout the last 35 years I’ve
been on an incredible journey,
I’ve driven many thousands of
the latest and greatest models
and it’s been an absolute thrill
and an experience I have never
tired of as I head into retirement
from the publishing industry.
By way of a thank you, I’d
like to acknowledge all of the
feedback I’ve received, motoring
journalism is obviously something
that is well read, respected
and opinion-dividing. I hope
you’ve enjoyed reading my columns
as much as I have enjoyed
writing them. For those who have
asked me what is the best vehicle
for you, I also hope I’ve steered
you in the right direction.
