WHAT
I LOVE
ABOUT
selwyn
one of my favourite things about Selwyn is our vast and
varied whenua (land). i love our awa (rivers and streams),
our lakes and wetlands, our hills and ngã maunga
(mountains). my favourite drive is up into the craigieburn
valley on Sh73, over porters pass and past lake
lyndon and Kura tawhiti castle hill. there is something
particularly special about driving through an odd gloomy
day on the plains into a brilliantly fine day in the alps. this
is a great drive for any season of the year with colours and
temperatures always changing.
Animals to benefit from students’ book
Darfield High School students Elyse Kerr (left) and Bridget Leach have teamed with the SPCA to create
an all-in-one colouring-in and storybook. As part of the Young Enterprise Scheme competition, the
students created the book for children aged five to 13, to teach them how to care for animals properly.
The books will be sold nationwide, with a percentage of profits going to the SPCA.
harm.
if you needed to evacuate your house right
now, where would you go? what would you
likely to be your first support following an
emergency event, or they may need your
help.
make sure you read a copy of the Selwyn
‘are you ready?’ booklet. it provides useful
information to help you plan for a range of
emergency situations that you, your family,
up in. pick up a copy from any council
Service centre (rolleston, lincoln, Darfield
Lincoln the place to cultivate great careers
sport and recreation and landscape architecture.
more and more students from around the country are choosing to
grow their futures at te whare wãnaka o aoraki lincoln university.
that’s because lincoln’s specialist land-based subjects are centred
around new Zealand’s largest export sectors, and this is supported
by its graduate employment rate, which is the highest of any
university in the country.
the small size of te whare wãnaka o aoraki is also a big advantage,
as it translates into a highly personalised learning environment and
much more one-on-one time with lecturers. Staff pride themselves
on always being available to students and their open-door policy
offers the support needed to get the most out of a lincoln degree.
lincoln gives students the expertise to make meaningful
contributions to society in a wide range of fields. these include
agriculture, horticulture, viticulture and winemaking, beer brewing
and fermentation, business, finance, marketing, property and
valuation, food science, environment and sustainability, tourism,
lincoln’s subject areas are varied but they all have one major
element in common: a strong focus on working with the land to
enhance lives. fostering sustainability is key, ensuring that the landbased
sectors are able to thrive for many years to come.
Students benefit from hands-on practical experience, meaning they
are able to get out and start addressing real-world issues in the field
from the very beginning of their studies. they also gain invaluable
connections through lincoln’s strong partnerships with industry,
often leading them to secure jobs before even completing their
qualifications.
this means graduates are highly sought-after, as they have the skills
and knowledge to help shape policies, develop sustainable practices
in a range of sectors, and solve issues relating to utilising resources.
BIG DEVELOPMENT, LOCAL VIBE
Lincoln’s charm lies in its small-town feel, its people, and its local history.
lincoln continues to grow with its population
increasing from just over 6000 in 2019 to
nearly 10,000 last year. on top of that, lincoln
university, and its associated agricultural
organisations, boost this number by 4000
during term time.
the foundation for arable research, plant
and food research, Dairy nZ, agresearch
and manaaki whenua are just some of the
organisations located in this vibrant town.
to cope with the demand for local services,
there has been a massive growth in local
shopping areas, including vernon Drive and
rosemerryn and, of course, new world
Supermarket, which was a huge boost to the
area when it first opened.
house-wise there are plenty of real estate
options, from existing homes to several
sub-divisions, including rosemerryn and
te whariki, which is surrounded by spring
heads. further out are lincoln South and
fletcher living’s greenstead as you head into
lincoln from prebbleton.

PLENTY OF THINGS TO DO
lincoln remains a hugely popular township
within Selwyn, not only for residents and
locals but for out-of-towners who want
to experience one of the many eating
establishments or visit the shops.
indoors or outdoors, there is plenty to
do in lincoln, and the lincoln wetlands
are worth a visit. Established in 2012,
the wetlands are well-used by the local
community for walking, jogging and bird
watching.
the track through the wetlands starts at
790 Ellesmere road, just outside lincoln
and takes around 30 minutes. if you want a
longer walk, then continue along the rail
trail.
the rail trail has been established over
several years and goes from christchurch
along a sealed off-road path to prebbleton,
through the prebbleton reserve and then
follows the path along Birchs road to reach
lincoln. from lincoln, you can bike as far
as little river along the old railway line.
future plans for greenstead include a $13
million sports and recreation park, taking
up 22 hectares and featuring bike tracks,
plenty of native bush and a dog park.
the lincoln Event centre is a modern
complex with several venue spaces
catering for everything from weddings to
community meetings and rock concerts
to major indoor sporting fixtures. the
centre also has a range of recreational
programmes from baby gym to yoga
and roller skating, along with courts for
basketball, badminton, or tennis.
lincoln is also home to Selwyn Sounds, a
highlight on the local music scene since
2019. performers over the years have
included leo Sayer, little river Band
and Jordan luck, with hoodoo gurus
headlining this year’s concert.
lincoln’s regular Saturday markets in the
town centre are always popular to visit,
meet other locals and enjoy local produce.
the local apollo lincoln cinema provides
an intimate setting for viewers, seats
15, is family friendly and feels more like
someone’s lounge room than a theatre. it
can also be booked for private screenings.
Dining-wise, there are plenty of options for
coffee, dine-in meals or takeaways, and the
township is well worth a visit by those who
don’t live locally.
leading memory centre designed to support
those living with dementia, will be finished in
the first quarter of 2025.
“i have lived in prebbleton
since 1991. two things
stand out to me: a sense
of place and its location.
there is a real feeling of
community amongst the
residents, and we have the
advantage of established
green spaces with large,
protected trees. our new
long-awaited commercial
through.
local sports are at the forefront in this
small village with a popular golf course
and tennis courts, rugby field, outdoor
bowling green and netball courts at the
domain. the town is also a popular stop
for cyclists.
FUN FACT
the name tai tapu is
BUSTLING COMMUNITY LIFE
Positive development and new initiatives create local pride for all to enjoy.
a photography club.
new to west melton is their first set of traffic
“within west melton, there
is more than meets the
140 years in the area with a special
celebratory service and morning tea.
a new restaurant, thirsty acres, has
was renamed in 1879 as
COUNTRY AT HEART
The town under the Nor’West arch is a natural hub for
local and farming communities.
Darfield has long been home to retired
farmers who still enjoy a rural lifestyle
with the backdrop of the Southern alps
to make them feel at home. it’s also a
lively town for young families and anyone
who enjoys being in the country while
still having the essential services of a
more established settlement.
the town of around 3000 people has
a real community feel and is wellknown
for its excellent coffee and pies
on the way to the mountains – and its
popular weekly market. there is also a
supermarket, petrol stations, dentist,
hairdressers, medical centre, hospital,
primary and high schools.
New subdivisions
expanding
Darfield is continually growing. the
Darfield Estates, cressy oaks and
oldfields are all hugely popular, with
some on-sale properties available. for
those wanting to build, sections are
available at torlesse Estates and Kersey
park.
on the west side of Darfield is ryelands,
which has been recently released to the
market with a range of section sizes and
will eventually take up 20 hectares.
A sense of belonging
for the elderly, there are several
retirement homes, including haunui
retirement village and westmar Senior
care, which provide a range of options
for those who want to stay in town with
that fabulous view of the mountains.
the two rivers community trust is
based in Darfield and provides several
services so that people enjoy a sense of
belonging and can connect, contribute,
and flourish within their community.
the land was first broken in the 1850s
by the Deans brothers and then became
a settlement at the fork of the railway
lines built in the 1870s to ferry coal to
christchurch.
the place was first known as horndon
Junction but was changed to the name of
the yorkshire village of Darfield because
of the original name’s similarity to
nearby hornby.
WHAT
I LOVE
ABOUT
DARFIELD
my most favorite thing about
Darfield is the community
spirit – it's the people that
makes Darfield the best
place in new Zealand. as a
community volunteer and a
public servant, in the three
years i have resided in Darfield,
i have had the opportunity to
local and national crises with
passion, drive and love.
FAMILY-FRIENDLY WALKING AND CYCLING
Walkways and cycleways between townships are connecting communities.
one of the reasons we all love Selwyn is that it is so easy to get outside
and explore. as well as more adventurous outdoor experiences, there
are plenty of family-friendly, shared walk/cycleways to enjoy.
these walk/cycle paths often link townships, for example:
• Springston to Lincoln, 2.6km, from Everest Way to Lincoln University,
opened in 2015
• Rolleston to Lincoln, 9km, off-road, alongside Boundary Rd and
lincoln rolleston rd, 2015
• Glentunnel to Coalgate, 2.4km, 2017
• Doyleston to Leeston, 2.1km, 2020
they are all flat, suitable for buggies, young cyclists, wheelchairs, and
e-bikes under 300 watts.
from lincoln, you can also enjoy one of the most scenic sections of the
little river rail trail – the 9.3km lincoln-to-neills-rd section. this
half-hour cycle includes the charming off-road path along the huritini/
halswell river and through te pae o ahuriri, a large native planting
project.
from lincoln, you can also enjoy one of the most scenic sections of the
little river rail trail – the 9.3km lincoln-to-neills-rd section. this
half-hour cycle includes the charming off-road path along the huritini/
halswell river and through te pae o ahuriri, a large native planting
project.
Selwyn District council is deliberately creating this family-friendly
network. having pulled in various government funding, it is enacting the
“walking & cycling Strategy” (updated 2018), aiming to make walking
and cycling “an integral part of everyone’s daily lives”.
this strategy is largely for health and well-being. no one can deny the
glow of pleasant outdoor exercise and the fun of heading out with loved
ones.
there are also environmental intentions. one specific goal is to
“Encourage and promote more people to walk or cycle for short trips
(less than 2km walking and 5km cycling).”
reducing private car journeys, in turn, reduces carbon emissions, noise
and air pollution, not to mention traffic congestion.
So, if you’re heading out for a local walk or cycle, you should find the
experience safe and accessible. things like crossings and intersections,
missing sections of paths, signage and painted cycle lane markings,
differentiation between standard and shared-use paths, street lighting,
speed limits and school zones are all under consideration.
So, get your whãnau or crew together and get out there. Sometimes the
good things in life arE free!
ENVIRONMENTAl
WASTE NOT, WANT NOT
Community pantries around Selwyn are created by the people, for the people and anyone can access them.
Everyone needs a helping hand sometimes.
Kiwis waste and throw away far too much
food, but there’s a simple solution that’s
happening all around us.
community pantries are those colourful
cupboards you see popping up, with food
for anyone to take. people or businesses
can easily share excess food within their
community.
the stands are usually for fresh fruit and
vegetables from neighbours’ gardens. Eggs,
preserves, home baking and commercial
bread are welcome if date labelled. canned
or dried goods are good, but no hot or cooked
food, and no clothing or other items.
anyone can set one up outside their property,
but there are some practical considerations
– e.g., near other food outlets or pubs is
probably not a good idea! if the pantry can
be open 24 hours, that enables retail and
hospitality to deliver at the end of their day,
and people to visit as suits their timings and
privacy.
pantries do need ongoing management.
ideally, they are checked at least daily for
anything unsuitable, and promoted via social
media, showing what’s there each week.
how do you find these nuggets of goodness?
that takes research – they vary as to where
they pop up and when they’re open. and
there’s a slow-down of donated fresh food in
winter. one main website, with searchable
maps, where you can list a pantry in your
area is:
• lovefoodhatewaste.co.nz/how-to-setup-a-community-fruit-and-vegetablestandpatakai.co.nz
[pãtaka Kai is mãori for
food storehouse]
word on the Selwyn streets: there are
established pantries in Darfield, waddington,
rolleston, leeston, rakaia huts, Springfield
and Kirwee… at least! check local availability
Growing your own food –
get inventive!
Growing your own food brings satisfaction and saves money.
once people start growing their own food,
they rapidly get addicted – to the process,
the taste, and the all-round satisfaction. But
what kickstarts many is the simple fact of
money. fruit and vegetables are becoming
luxury goods, and – annoyingly – often
imported ones at that.
however, when you’ve got the gardening bug,
you soon learn that there are costs in that
too. this is where it’s smart, and good for the
planet, to get inventive.
True story!
while David, a Selwyn local, knew that
composting reduced waste while improving
soil quality, he’d struggled with the various
commercially sold compost bins. he couldn’t
stir them, move them, or add the right thing
at the right times, and ended up with foulsmelling
green sludge.
David was also broke and looked around for
what he had to hand. he figured some old
tyres could be great for compost – the black
would heat everything and speed it up. and
he was right! a year on, after layering food
waste with clippings and chicken straw – and
no stirring – each time he lifted a tyre he was
rewarded with rich black, wormy soil.
the tyres are self-contained and small, so
easy to handle. Because they are open to
the ground, worms easily get in, constantly
reducing the matter so the tyres never filled.
to minimise vermin, they’re away from the
house with no meat scraps – you could add a
lid, but David says he lets the sun and rain do
their magic.
Sustainability is as much about how you do
things as what you create – so get growing
and get upcycling while you’re at it!
DISCOVER A NEW WAY OF THINKING ABOUT WASTE
A new waste minimisation education facility in Selwyn is just the beginning.
reDiscover – Selwyn’s first waste
minimisation education facility and stage one
of the reconnect project transforming the
pines resource recovery park.
reDiscover is taking a new approach to
waste minimisation offering free waste
minimisation and sustainability programmes
for schools and community groups; helping
to learn more about waste, its impact, and
what we can do differently, through classes
run by reDiscover’s dedicated waste and
Sustainability Educator Elizabeth lovell.
from handrails made of discarded golf clubs
right up to the buildings themselves – old,
relocated classroom blocks – the whole
set-up is a practical example of what can be
achieved by rethinking waste.
fit-out elements have been selected carefully
to minimise the environmental impact of the
facility. Everything possible has been sourced
second-hand, reused, or made from recycled
materials – with sustainable choices for any
materials that had to be sourced new. Even
the car park was made incorporating the
use of recycled asphalt, 11,000 plastic oil
containers and 16,000 litres of waste engine
oil – instead of virgin materials.
the on-site and outreach programmes are
designed around the themes of ‘reduce,
reuse, recycle and recover’ and the concept
of a circular economy.
it’s part of the wider reconnect project at
the pines resource recovery park, providing
the Selwyn community with practical ways
to think differently about waste, council’s
resource recovery and waste manager
andrew Boyd says.
the future wider project plan includes a
community garden hub, a reuse shop, a
tool lendery and maker spaces, kitted out
with tools to repair, refurbish, repurpose,
or upcycle items that would have otherwise
been landfilled.
“as a council, we don’t have a lot of influence
over manufacturers or the packaging that
people use, but we can help them to become
more aware of the products they purchase,
the impacts those have and some of the
alternatives,” mr Boyd says.
CHOOSING
THE RIGHT
DOCTOR
finding the right doctor is
essential to ensure you receive
the best medical care
if you’ve just moved into the
Selwyn district, then finding the
right doctor or medical care
provider that fits your needs is
essential.
here are a few things to
consider:
1. is the medical practice taking
on new patients?
2. what distance do you need to
travel and is there easy access
to the building and plenty of
onsite parking?
3. what are the opening hours?
are they open outside your work
hours?
4. is the doctor a person you can
trust, communicate well with,
and do they listen to your health
concerns?
5. is the staff friendly, efficient,
and professional, and the
practice well run?
6. ask for recommendations
from friends and family or ask
health professionals such as
a local pharmacy or physio for
their suggestions.
7. remember to get your
medical records transferred
over to your new provider.
finding the right medical care
provider may take time and
effort but the benefit of having
one you can trust and feel happy
visiting makes it worthwhile.
LOOKING OUT FOR ELDERLY
NEIGHBOURS
The Hello Project saves lives by looking out and checking in with
your elderly neighbours
over 180,000 elderly live alone in new
Zealand. these people need the support of
their neighbours and loved ones to make sure
they are okay on a daily basis.
getting to know your elderly neighbours can
start with a simple ‘hello’ if you see them out
and about or try knocking on their door and
introducing yourself.
the hello project encourages Kiwis to not
only look out for each other, but to make
a plan and get to know the warning signs
when something might be wrong. Because
if something looks wrong, it usually is. it’s
knowing the warning signs that can save a
life.
If you’re a vulnerable elderly living alone:
• Introduce yourself to your neighbours
• Give them your contact number
• Reassure them that you’re okay with them
checking on you
• Talk to them about what signs to look out
for e.g. the curtains not pulled by 8am
if you’re a neighbour to a vulnerable elderly
• Make yourself known and get to know your
elderly neighbour
• Give them your contact number
• Make a plan and talk to them about what
signs to look out for e.g the porch light left on
during the day
FAITH &
RElIGION
CELEBRATING 150 YEARS
IN HALKETT
selwyn district residents' guide 2023
Local ministries provide spiritual support for residents and
their families.
on Sunday october 15, 2023, hope halkett
presbyterian church will celebrate 150 years
to the day of the first service held in halkett
road, west melton.
one of the first acts of the early settlers was
to thank god for their safe journey and to
plan a place of worship. these pioneers, who
had brought with them the religious training
of their early days, made great sacrifices
to allow them to save sufficient funds to
build a church in which to worship. messrs
alexander calder and gilbert henderson took
a leading role in its building at $300.00.
after completion, a nor’wester blew it off its
foundation. traction engines pulled it back
into place, and props were erected on either
side; these were later removed. not only
is this historic church one of the oldest in
the South island, but the church is also one
of the few presbyterian churches to have a
cemetery.
for over 150 years, a faithful band have
maintained the church, cemetery and
grounds. there have been traditional services
continuously for 150 years. present services
are held at 11am on the first Sunday of
each month with the enthusiastic singing of
traditional hymns. members host monthly
morning teas at the church, and a regular
foot clinic runs there too.
to celebrate this remarkable milestone of
service to the community, a celebration is
being organised for 15th october 2023. you
are welcome to join in. a service will be held
at 10am, followed by lunch.
CHOOSING THE BEST SCHOOL FOR YOUR CHILD
Selwyn offers an abundance of primary schools, meeting education requirements at every level.
parents want the best for their children, so
choosing a school is something you'll want
to get right. But, with numerous options
available, how do you decide which one
will provide the best outcome for learning
but also ensure your child's happiness and
growth?
many choose the school/kura nearest to
home due to enrolment zones. however,
your child's needs and preferences and your
circumstances will also be factors. to see
what schools are available and zones, check
the Education counts website.
here are some factors to consider:
• How will my child get to and from school?
• How does the school support children with
special education needs or talents?
• Does the school have a bilingual unit or
teach in te reo?
• What are the school's education
philosophies, principles and values?
• What are the school's behaviour policies
(bullying, language, etc.)?
• Will your child's interests and co-curricular
be met, e.g., music, sport, culture?
• Will senior-level subjects support your
child's possible career choice?
• Do you prefer co-educational or single-sex
schools?
• Where are my child's friends going to
school?
• Will my child cope with the school's roll
size?
• What are the school and teachers'
strengths?
• Have you considered a private or alternative
school?
• Do you want your child to go to an
intermediate school?
with schools in mind, talk to families whose
children already go to those schools and
arrange to visit the schools to meet with the
principal and potential teacher(s). attend
an open day or evening to look around and
chat about opportunities and how the school
operates. check the Education review
office (Ero) report for the schools you are
considering for information about a school's
strengths and next steps for development.
ask the school for a prospectus or
information pack or visit the school's website
to gain information. for choosing a secondary
school, check the nZQa website for what
unit and achievement standards the school is
accredited to teach.
choosing a school that is the right fit for your
child is a big responsibility, so be prepared
with the information you need to make the
best decision.
Selwyn High Schools are adapting to meet the needs of their respective communities.
ROLLESTON COLLEGE HOROEKA HAEMATA
continues strong growth, providing 1600
students with learning opportunities and the
chance to display the school values of Develop
Self, Build communities and transform
futures.
academic results are above the national
average for all ncEa levels.
meanwhile, their mixed touch rugby team
recently won the national touch rugby
competition and the pasifika group performed
at polyfest for the first time. recently Selwyn
businesses attended a partnership event to
discuss connecting local businesses with
learners.
upcoming events include an open evening
for prospective students and families and the
school musical 'the wizard of oz'. the current
school site is expanding to include specialised
spaces while preparation for the senior
campus is well underway. Staff are working
alongside the ministry of Education to design
and build the campus, including a bi-lingual
unit. an update with site plans will take place
at community networking later this year.
ELLESMERE COLLEGE-TE KÃRETI O
WAIHORA over the past five years, the staff
at Ellesmere college-te Kãreti o waihora
have redeveloped the learning design at the
college for it to be more cohesive, localised,
and relevant to the world. Significant
growth has occurred within the school zone,
with a roll of 520. with multiple housing
developments in progress, there is expected
to be a considerable increase in the student
population over the next three years.
in may, the first stages of a full school
redevelopment will occur, and Ellesmere
college will have an entirely new customdesigned
school to move into. the design
will include multiple learning hubs,
combining traditional and responsive learning
environments, a 380-seat auditorium, whare
and redeveloped gymnasium. there will also
be significant planting of native flora, and a
food forest, providing a sustainable learning
and working environment for their students
and staff.
LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL is a contemporary
state, co-educational school with a roll of
approximately 1400 students, including 20
overseas fee-paying students. the school
provides a warm and caring environment,
encouraging students to become lifelong
learners through individual and collaborative
learning.
their linc (mentoring) system, house
structure, and pastoral care system provide
ongoing support and guidance. with various
innovative learning spaces and curriculum
meeting individual student needs, lincoln
high School has a reputation for innovation,
forward-thinking and excellence. year 9-11's
curriculum is semesterised, giving students
more flexibility of choice and increased
learning engagement, while ncEa level 1
has been removed to focus on all students
succeeding at level 2.
in 2023, lincoln high School is embarking
on stage one of a school rebuild, including
a 12-classroom Science block and an
administration block.
dARFIELd HIGH SCHOOL-TE KURA TUARUA
O TAWERA is developing nicely with gentle
roll growth. Staff are focused on all ãkonga
(students) feeling welcomed and enjoying their
time at school, with new values and a new
'look'. the curriculum is evolving to best suit
the community's needs, with redevelopment in
years 7 and 8 and investment in senior school
practical subjects with more collaboration for
pathways to work and study.
the sporting range is remarkable, with notable
success in equestrian, adventure racing and
shooting. the arts have enjoyed a boost, and
international students have been welcomed
back. hosting highlights the manaakitanga
of their students, social good manners, and
respect for others.
the school's buildings and classrooms are
relatively traditional, with no major new builds
planned, but extensions will be needed in the
next five years.
Safer Selwyn Roads
Plan Ahead, Stay Alert, Slow Down, Drop Back
there are four simple things motorists can
do on our roads to help keep themselves and
others safe.
Plan ahead.
Know your route, the appropriate lane to
be in, where you’re going to take a break,
how you’re going to get home after a couple
of drinks. check the weather, check your
vehicle. take the time to plan, to ensure you
arrive safely.
Stay alert
Be alert to what’s around you on the road.
Be aware of the environment, road signs,
other traffic and intersections. Eliminate
distractions and be prepared for the
unexpected.
Slow down
going 5km/hr over in a 50km/hr zone may
only save you 75 seconds on average but
doubles your crash risk. Keep an eye on your
speed at all times and stick to the speed
limit.
drop back
make an effort to increase following
distances to give yourself more reaction time
and allow yourself to see further down the
road.
using these four simple steps every time you
use a road will make them safer for everyone.
Plan Ahead
Stay Alert
Slow Down
Drop back

annually on an autumnal march Sunday, over 40 farms across new
Zealand welcome visitors, offering talks, walks, activities, and the
ever-popular on-farm shopping. as you would expect, Selwyn is wellrepresented.
this event is for farms of all sorts. it’s easy and even subsidised for
farmers to get involved – just apply on the open farms website. the
website streamlines the planning and hosting, provides guidance
materials, resources, h&S plan templates and signage ideas, and
coordinates visitor marketing and registration. it also gives great
crowd-interaction suggestions.
your event will be promoted on the website so that people can search
by location and easily find you.
the benefits are clear. you can enthuse hundreds of people about
your product and methods. the produce stalls get cleaned out, and,
ongoing, everyone who attended will be seeking out your goods.
from the public’s point of view, this is a fascinating and unusual day
out – and it’s free. visitors should preferably register in advance, but
this has no ongoing obligations.
at a recent event, a full mix of cultures, ages and social groups
attended. Kids were playing with soil as if they’d never seen it before.
Everyone left with new and in-depth knowledge willingly imparted by
the passionate hosts.
the deeper reason to support this event is that it goes a long way in
re-uniting town and country, and consumers and growers. farmers
can help the urban public understand their pressures, while also
sharing their pride and passion. the experience enriches everyone
involved. to find out more, visit: www.openfarms.co.nz.
FOLLOWING ANIMAL BYLAWS
Having four-footed and feathered friends living amongst us enhances everyone’s happiness.
in rural towns and communities, your
neighbours are just as likely to have lambs,
horses, bees and chickens as they are to have
more domestic pets. Sharing daily life with
animals is one of the joys of living in a more
relaxed, regional environment.
local facebook community pages are full of
talk of animals, whether it’s a heads-up that
an alpaca is straying down a particular road
or requests to passers-by not to feed your
horses. towns feature dog parks proudly, and
horse riders can be more common to see on
roads than cyclists in some places.
Even so, it’s not a jungle out there. Selwyn
District council’s “Keeping animals, poultry
and Bees Bylaw” (2021) sets out the numbers
of different types of wildlife allowed in urban
settings and where and how they can be
housed. for example, lambs are ok in your
yard only up to six months old, 12 poultry is
the maximum (covering various domestic
fowl – but no roosters or peacocks), and
you can only have two beehives unless your
property is more than 1500 square metres or
next to a reserve or rural land.
Domestic pets are in the spotlight too. cats
over four months old must be microchipped.
Selwyn was one of nZ’s first councils to
introduce ”one tag” for dogs – a metal
registration tag in a choice of sizes that
owners can get engraved, rather than the
previous single-use plastic annual tags.
when managed well, having four-footed
and feathered friends living amongst
communities enhances everyone’s happiness,
and long may it be so.
LIVING AND
BUYING
IN RURAL
TOWNSHIPS
Buyers can choose a lifestyle and reap
the benefits of living in a rural township.
our rural townships, including west melton,
rolleston, lincoln, Springston, prebbleton,
and Darfield, all contribute to the popularity
and desirability of living in thriving Selwyn.
with an easy commute to christchurch, you
can benefit from living in smaller, peaceful,
less congested areas with a strong sense of
community. Selwyn also provides access to
lakes, mountains, and hiking and biking trails
for leisure and adventures close at hand.
richard tait from harcourts four Seasons
rolleston suggests rural townships are great
for families and quality of life. with fresh air,
loads of parking, places to walk for people
and dogs, and excellent sports facilities,
families do not need to go to the big, busy
city of christchurch. richard's often noticed
people out walking, sports and social groups
frequently using facilities and services, and
the closeness of ski fields. he also says good
local business groups help and support each
other. with rates still lower than in the city,
property availability, and excellent sales,
richard is excited about the area's future.
cara callister from red chili property
management confirms the district offers a
stable building platform where you get "bang
for your buck". the area also provides plenty
of employment, while commuting to the cBD
is a relatively quick drive. She also advises
there are various schools to cater for families
with school-age children.
Statistics appear to back up the hype about
the Selwyn District. tania mills from BlueSky
real Estate advised that in march 2023,
rEinZ's data showed that the median sale
price in Selwyn was $840,000. this figure
compares to new Zealand's median price for
residential property (excluding sections) of
$775,000.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT BUILDER
Finding the right builder can make all the difference to your building experience.
whether you are considering an individual builder or a well-known
group house building company, essential advice is to do your
research! get referrals from friends, family and colleagues about
their building experiences or even contact clients of previous
builds. also, check if the builder or company is a registered master
Builder or nZ certified Builder.
Individual builders
• Cost-effective due to lower overheads.
• Dealing and communicating directly with the builder/owner.
• Build a strong relationship.
• Continuity from start to finish.
• Greater flexibility with personalised designs.
Group house builders
homes.
• Fewer decisions need to be made, and the project is managed from
start to finish.
• Well-established relationships with suppliers.
• Cost-effective with standard designs, materials, and trades.
• Land and house packages are available.
MASTER BUILdERS NEW ZEALANd RECOMMENdS yOU ASK THE
FOLLOWING qUESTIONS:
• How long has the builder been in business?
• Are they a Registered Master Builder?
• Does the builder have a successful track record in building new
homes or doing renovation work?
• Is the builder suited to the size and type of your building project?
• Does the builder have the available staffing and expertise to suit the
job?
• Is the builder ‘active’ in your area?
• Can the builder willingly supply testimonials or referees of
completed projects, including those you can contact?
• Who would run the job, how will you be updated on progress and
how often?
• Will you be sent photos of the progress of your house, and who will
you talk to if you’re unhappy about something?
• When would the job start and finish, and who advises you of any
delays?
• How long will it take to get plans drawn up, and how long will the
building consent process take?
finally, do your due diligence to protect your investment and reduce
