Editorial
A systemic rethink of the way we build: everyone knows that
this needs to happen—that, in fact, it is long overdue. But the
situation is complicated. Yes, there is a shortage of residential
units, but in light of ecological principles, new construction can
no longer be justified. Yes, concrete and steel use too much
energy, but wood and adobe are not always the solution. No,
urban sprawl cannot be allowed to devour the landscape, but
municipalities continue to earmark land for new construction: for
single-family homes, for logistics centers. And the list goes on.
But we refuse to remain mired in a crisis mentality: through our
publications, we instead seek to offer fresh impulses and a solid
basis for a real change of thinking.
The new series of Bauhaus Earth Manuals begins with a prominent
case study: an examination of the CO 2
balance of the
Barcelona Pavilion: if they were working today, would Ludwig
Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich build with timber instead of
marble? The circular economy is not about material alone: in a
systematic way, Die zirkuläre Stadt asks where zones for transformation
are still present within a given city. The way brownfield
land can be developed into a neighborly district is illustrated in
an exemplary way by the first volume of the series Gemeinwohl
bauen. The qualities of postwar modernism are illustrated in the
abundant book Mäusebunker and Hygieneinstitut, featuring two
Brutalist architectural icons in former West Berlin.
But while we ponder the aesthetics and ethics of the paradigm
shift in building, we are being overtaken by a very different
development from the right: artificial intelligence, which currently
threatens to hijack architectural production as well. You don’t
believe it? Just have a look at OK Computer.
Rethinking is a demanding business. But we stay tuned.
Bauhaus Earth Essays 1
Toward Re-Entanglement
A Charter for the City and the Earth
Bauhaus Earth (ed.)
In recognition of the dire threats of climate collapse and mass extinction,
the global initiative Bauhaus Earth convened a team of scientists,
architects, spatial planners, and policy makers from around the world to
author a manifesto. Toward Re-Entanglement is a call for radical action. It
challenges all those with a role in the conception, production, operation,
and governance of the building sector, to address the systemic ecological,
climatic, and social impacts incurred by its activities.
Twelve principles of “re-entanglement” guide the re-design of the entire
life cycle of the urban realm: the re-formation and re-materialization of the
physical artifacts that comprise it, the reconfiguration of the socioeconomic
structures that underpin it, and the re-engagement of the bioregions that
might sustainably supply it. In this way, our unprecedented convergence
of environmental and social crises offers us powerful opportunities for
systemic change.
The Charter is the first volume in the Bauhaus Earth Essays series that will
launch in 2024, featuring a wide array of critical voices that will address
the complete overhaul of the built environment that the climate crisis
demands of us.
Mass is More
The Barcelona Experiment
Alan Organschi / Rosa Hanhausen / Vicente Guallart /
Daniel Ibañez
For nine days in late September of 2022, the iconic Barcelona Pavilion—designed
by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lily Reich in 1929—
was host to a kind of counterfactual provocation. A new piece of
architecture, inserted into the Pavilion’s garden and peeking over the
travertine wall that forms its famous entry court, referred respectfully
to the archetypal language of the once-exotic steel, concrete, and
stone masterpiece, but was instead constructed entirely from “mass
timber”, cross-laminated timber panels sourced from regional forests
and manufactured in nearby Galicia.
The architectural intervention posed a radical alternative to
modernism’s materiality: renewable, sustainably-sourced, carbon
storing bio-fiber that might transform buildings—and one day whole
cities—from massive sources of greenhouse gas emissions into
climate-restoring carbon sinks. Underpinned by extensive documentation,
the book explores the making of this much-admired symbol of
architectural modernity and its material alternative.
Mass is More is the first volume in the new book series Bauhaus Earth
Manuals, which will explore case studies of sustainable building and
planning, and their scalability on a planetary level.
Die zirkuläre Stadt
Theorie und Empirie
urbaner Obsoleszenzen
Stefan Rettich / Sabine Tastel (eds.)
From department stores to barracks and churches,
urban buildings regularly fall out of use as a result of
societal changes. However, the driving forces behind
these urban obsolescences have thus far not been
systematically investigated. As a result of the global
trends of digitalization, mobility transformation, and
changes in religious behavior, there is currently significant
pressure to identify new uses for a wide range
of different building types. These buildings represent a
key resource for the circular development of growing
metropolises, for affordable housing and uses that
serve the common good, for more resilient neighborhood
design that is better adapted to climate change,
and for the increasing number of new functions now
being carried out in our cities. Last but not least, this
existing building stock is also a resource for the new
infrastructures necessitated by mobility transformation
and the shift to renewable energy.
Mäusebunker and
Hygieneinstitut
Two Berlin Brutalist Icons
Ludwig Heimbach (ed.)
Threatened with demolition and celebrated as icons of
brutalism, Gerd and Magdalena Hänska’s Mäusebunker
and the former Hygieneinstitut designed by Hermann
Fehling and Daniel Gogel in Steglitz, Berlin, form a unique
ensemble of exceptional buildings. This volume takes as
its subjects the different architectural principles underlying
the two facing buildings, the intense debate concerning
their preservation and reuse, and their economic
and cultural value. The questions now posed by these
concrete structures and the impact of their designs and
power are explored using the architects’ historical design
documents as well as artistic contributions. Photographs
by Kay Fingerle offer a view of the buildings’ interiors rarely
afforded to the public.
BOB CAMPUS—
Transformation einer
Band 1
Montag Stiftung Urbane Räume (ed.)
Gemeinwohl
bauen
The transformation of a former textile factory into the BOB CAMPUS
in Wuppertal-Oberbarmen demonstrates how an urban wasteland
can be converted into a new space for community.
In two volumes, the design processes of the award-winning site
become visible. Volume 1, which will be published first, is dedicated
to the building process and the gradually developing spatial qualities.
Through the interplay of innovative solutions to architectural
challenges, the appreciative treatment of the historic site and the
existing building fabric, and a continuously coproductive process
of many actors, a unique mix of uses emerges, including daycare
centers, school rooms, offices, apartments, and communal spaces.
Powerful images illustrate how it is possible to build for the common
good—and what opportunities this offers for society. An incentive to
imitate.
The two volumes on the BOB CAMPUS mark the beginning of the
series Gemeinwohl bauen (Building for the common good) by the
Montag Stiftung Urbane Räume. Further volumes on exemplary
projects are planned, including one on the socially focused and
energy-efficient renovation of a housing estate, the transformation
of urban brownfields into urban commons, and the sensitive, useroriented
renovation of a listed building.
Die Tankstelle
Ein Bautypus im Wandel seiner Symbolhaftigkeit
Franz Arlart
From early modernist designs like Hans Poelzig’s archetypal gas station to the
Stuttgarter Schule standardized filling stations on the Reichsautobahn, and
through to Lothar Götz’s modular post-war constructions—which paved the
way for the standardized corporate designs that flourished later—gas stations
have been a key element of our surroundings since the 1920s. While the
design and construction of gas stations has since become a significant area of
work for well-known architecture and engineering firms, this type of building
has thus far received barely any attention in academic discourse. Franz Arlart
examines and systematizes the development of gas stations in Germany with
reference to the architects that designed them. Taking into account functional,
technical, and symbolic considerations, this book presents the architectural
development of the building type from 1920 to 2020 and outlines the trends
that will shape gas station design going forward.
Stadtparterre
Erdgeschoss, Straße, Hof und deren
Übergänge
Angelika Psenner
The concept of the urban parterre plays a central
role in considering what makes a city livable. The
urban parterre is the zone of the city at eye level:
the urban ground floor. It is a fabric composed
of the built and unbuilt spaces in which we move
and interact every day. While urban research
has previously tended to focus on either the
ground floor level or public spaces, this book
considers the systemic interplay of ground floor,
inner courtyards, streets, and their interfaces.
Using Urban Parterre Modelling to carry out a
comprehensive analysis of architectural structures
dating from the late nineteenth century (the
Gründerzeit), the hidden challenges and opportunities
posed by these buildings are explored
and discussed with reference to the sustainable,
resilient, and circular future uses of existing
architecture. Taking Vienna’s Gründerzeit parterre
as a starting point, the author takes a critical and
Taking Action
Transforming Athens’ Urban Landscapes
Norbert Kling / Tasos Roidis / Mark Michaeli (eds.)
Taking Action brings into focus the sustainable design of urban
transformation and the preparation of densely-structured
urban spaces for future challenges. How can climate change
and spatial inequalities be tackled under crisis conditions and
in view of limited spatial and other resources? How can we
relate our ambitious and broadly defined goals to the reality of
local conditions and everyday spaces? How can knowledge be
translated into action? While basic spatial relations are currently
being renegotiated in cities throughout Europe, it is in Athens
that some of the most pressing urban problems have been
crystallized in order to establish unique spaces of experimentation.
Approaching these multi-dimensional questions from
different perspectives, the authors seek to identify possible
sites of intervention, suggest new models of transformation,
and unleash the potential in urban landscapes as a means of
stimulating positive urban change.
Power, Flows, and
Transformation
Portraits of Berlin-Brandenburg Energy Spaces
Power, Flows,
and Transformation
David Bauer / Philipp Misselwitz (eds.)
Accounting for about three-quarters of annual global greenhouse gas emissions,
the transformation of energy networks is a pivotal step toward planetary
sustainability. To transition our current operating systems to work within
planetary boundaries, essential decarbonization strategies need to be put in
place that will reshape territories, towns, and streets worldwide.
Power, Flows, and Transformation explores the energy landscapes connected
to Berlin and Brandenburg, rendering power supply as a spatial and material
phenomenon with an impactful agency. Through the lens of infrastructural
assemblages, readers are guided by numerous maps, drawings, and
photographs that immerse them in the expansive regimes of urban energy
accumulation across the past, present, and future.
The power plant was established in 1900 initially to provide
illumination for the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. It later
expanded its operations to supply electricity for street lighting,
as the gasworks’ capacity was insufficient to meet the evergrowing
demand. The construction of the coal-fired power plant
also saw the construction of the Siemenssteg, which served as
both electrical lines across the Spree to Charlottenburg and a
pedestrian bridge. From 1926, the power plant provided district
heating to numerous buildings, including the town hall, German
opera, Schillertheater, and city pool on Krummen Street.
The gas turbine was converted to use natural gas in 2000,
and the final coal-fired steam generator was taken off the grid
in 2001. In 2006 the coal unloading system along the banks of
the Spree was cleared, and a hiking trail was created instead.
And the demolition of the 125 m high chimney began, which had
been a landmark visible from afar and had dominated the tower
of the Charlottenburg town hall for almost 80 years. The power
plant remains in operation as a crucial node in the Berlin heating
network.
At the end of the 19th century the northern region of Berlin
continued to face disadvantages in terms of its electrotechnical
development. To address this issue, the BEW (Berlin Electricity
Works) decided to construct a new three-phase power plant in the
area. The chosen location for the plant was the district of Moabit,
situated between the ring railway area and the Spandau shipping
canal, ideal due to its ability to offer cost-effective delivery of coal.
Moabit power plant was first put into operation in 1920. Since
the very construction of this plant, the site has played a leading
role in the development of industrial power generation, from the
first piston steam engines and steam turbines to the largest steam
turbine in existence in 1923 and the pulverized coal-fired boilers.
Between 1987 and 1989, large parts of the old plant were replaced
with a new heating block complete with a modern firing system. In
1990, the new block with an atmospherically circulating fluidized
bed combustion system once again put the CHP plant in a leading
position in terms of environmentally compatible technology. Since
the end of 2013, this site has been retrofitted for the co-combustion
of biomass.
Metropolitan Design as a New Discipline
Roland Krebs / Stefan Mayr /
Cédric Ramière / Claudia Staubmann (eds.)
Today’s cities are growing rapidly, creating heterogeneous urban fabrics
that cross administrative and political borders. To meet the challenges
of our time, a new cross-sectoral, multi-level and people-centered
planning approach is needed. Metropolitan planning is therefore
essential to contemporary planning practice and culture and must take
into account the potential of both urban and rural spaces.
This publication introduces the new discipline of metropolitan design
by sharing innovative and international knowledge of interconnected
mobility, balanced growth, resilient landscapes, and integrated programming
of metropolitan regions. Through collaboration and active
participation, MetroLab provides tools to develop future-proof and
highly livable city regions.
Symbolische Orte machen
Ein Potenzial der Stadtentwicklung
Sonja Broy / Thomas Kuder (eds.)
Symbolische
Orte
machen
Symbolic places endow physical spaces with meaning. They impart knowledge
about historical events, narrate stories, or stand for specific concerns.
While the creation of symbolic places used to be mostly the task of politics
and administration, today civil society turns its attention toward such locations.
They are of great potential significance, moreover, for urban development—provided
they are advanced for the sake of the common good.
This book sheds light on the characteristics of symbolic places, their functioning,
and the challenges and obstacles they confront. The collected
examples range from historically fraught places, such as Berlin’s Olympic
Grounds, all the way to places of collective self-empowerment like the
self-managed Navarinou Park in Athens. Contributions by distinguished
authors from the fields of history, social science, urban planning, and urban
marketing encourage readers to take up recognized—but also controversial—
symbolic places. Or, as suggested by the title of this anthology, to actively
“make” them through collective discussions and decision-making processes.
Kirche Raum Gegenwart
Walter Zahner (ed.)
Open churches are valuable public spaces that embrace new possibilities
while continuing to fulfill their liturgical function. The focus of Kirche Raum
Gegenwart is the sustainable transformation of these locations in a way
that goes beyond purely architectural intervention. Using four case studies
from dioceses in southern Germany, the book and traveling exhibition of the
same name provide concrete examples of what these changes might look
like. Together with relevant stakeholders from the local communities, artists
and architects have taken widely varying approaches to the supplementary
uses of church spaces. The designs presented in the volume are complemented
by fourteen particularly successful church transformations that have
already been implemented in southern Germany. In addition to this, written
contributions provide deeper insights into the changes occurring within the
two largest Christian denominations and the unique requirements of these
increasingly frequent spatial transformations.
The Architecture Prize of the Province of Styria is presented every
two years. It highlights the particular importance of building culture in
Austria’s second-largest province. Alongside the historic center of its
capital Graz, which was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status
in 1999, more recent architectural history is well-represented here. The
Grazer Schule gained international acclaim from 1960 onwards, and
the Kunsthaus Graz by Peter Cook and Colin Fournier—opened as part
of the European Capital of Culture 2003 festivities—has been similarly
celebrated. These elements form a fertile basis for the high-quality
local architectural scene. This volume introduces a selection of new
architectural projects in the province of Styria chosen by the Dutch
curator Indira van 't Klooster, director of Arcam (Architecture Center
Spatial Expeditions
Exhibiting Matters
träge in GAM.15 aus Urbanismus, Landschaftsarchitektur, Regionalplanung,
Soziologie und Geografie zeigen Räume in Transformation und stellen Ideen
vor, wie räumliche Gerechtigkeit aussehen kann. In aktuellen Zustandsbeschreibungen
räumlich-soziale – also territoriale – Blickwinkel einzunehmen und
Territorial Justice
Territorial Justice
Space is experienced not only visually, but with all the senses. Despite this,
In the face of growing inequalities in access to and distribution of resources,
the design and reception of architecture often barely take haptic, acoustic,
territorial justice has (once again) become a current issue and task in the fields
and osmic perceptions into account. Consequently, in the architecture dis-
of architecture, planning, and urbanism. GAM.15 – Territorial Justice is dedi-
cipline there is no continuous discourse on the topic of spatial perception.
cated to rural and peripheral spaces that have until now received little atten-
GAM.13 Spatial Expeditions seeks to fill this gap. The method of the expe-
tion from this discourse. The contributions in GAM.15—coming from per-
dition enables an experimental approach and provides the opportunity to
spectives of urbanism, landscape architecture, regional planning, sociology,
gain new insights and perspectives with regard to built space. It explores
and geography—show spaces in transformation and present ideas for what
perceptual techniques from the fields of architecture, the visual arts, music,
forms spatial justice can take. Current descriptions of disadvantaged areas
dance, and other related disciplines. GAM.13 therefore represents an expedi-
make clear that any policy aimed at eliminating or combating injustice would
tion into experimental architecture and the unexplored aspects of built space.
do well to take on specific socio-spatial—i.e. territorial—points of view, and
as such to rely on the expertise of planners and designers.
Eingebunden in
GAM.17 nimmt Holz in seiner Vielschichtigkeit
Beyond the Institution
Beyond the Institution
Transforming the Learning Environment
in Architectural Education
We have only just started reimagining wood as a cutting-edge, versatile
building material of the future. A component of environmentally friendly
resource cycles, wood demonstrates its innovative potential when used in
new technological developments and hybrid applications that are suited to
complex, modern architectural tasks. GAM.17 takes a new look at wood—at
its multi-faceted nature and architectural possibilities—and proposes build-
ing and design concepts that fully utilize the material’s potential for a more
climate-friendly construction industry. This is further complemented by
a look back at the history of building with wood and the ideological en-
tanglements that have long stood in the way of the further development
of wood as a building material.
Space Wars
An Archive of Desert Operations
Yousef Awaad Hussein / Asaiel Al Saeed /
Saphiya Abu Al-Maati / Aseel AlYaqoub (eds.)
In architectural discourse surrounding the Arabian Gulf,
the desert is often overlooked as a contrasting backdrop
to the region’s oil-fueled cities. Space Wars challenges
the view of the desert as a wasteland by bringing together
the perspectives of architects, artists, ecologists,
cartographers, and more to shed light on a complex
landscape that is host to critical operations for the
development of sovereign states. Moving across scales
and time, Kuwait’s hinterland serves as the critical lens to
look at the region’s past traumas, current struggles, and
possible futures.
Artificial neuronal networks open up radical new pathways for image creation.
On the basis of textual prompts, machine-learning algorithms like Midjourney
and DALL-E generate imagery that is simultaneously familiar and alien. Graphic
designer Floyd Schulze uses this rapidly developing technology to recreate architectural
icons. In an accompanying essay, Georg Vrachliotis takes up the topic
on the theoretical level. OK Computer is the first book to deal with AI-generated
architectural imagery from an artistic perspective.
URBANIZING
SUBURBIA
Hyper-Gentrification,
the Financialization of Housing,
and the Remaking of the
Outer European City
Tahl Kaminer /
Leonard Ma /
Helen Runting (eds.)
Urbanizing Suburbia considers three current and related processes
underway in global cities: the hyper-gentrification of inner
cities, the financialization of housing, and the structural changes
occurring in the outer city. Rocketing housing prices have displaced
residents from inner cities and created a rent gap in outer
cities. Increasingly, municipalities, developers, and displaced residents
search for opportunities in the suburban belts. Changes in
demographics, densities, live/work ratios, and tenures are remaking
outer cities, rendering them less and less suburban. The book
examines these changes by looking at four key European cities:
Amsterdam, Berlin, London, and Stockholm. It is a first attempt
at understanding the three processes discussed here within one
comprehensive explanatory framework.
Doris Kleilein / Friederike Meyer (eds.)
Working from home, undertourism, online shopping: the disruptive
upheavals caused by the COVID-19 pandemic challenge architecture
and urban planning. New spaces for action are opening up, but
are they being utilized? From dividing traffic space fairly to urban
food policies, from new places for work and recreation to the question
of how communities can be oriented towards the common
good: Post-pandemic Urbanism envisions a near future and discusses
how cities and their transformative power can help to handle
this current crisis and those to come.
n Call in Flanders (the Dutch-speaking, northern part of
) is more than just another architecture competition: any goval
agency or public institution can choose to work with an
ll for any given construction project. Since its invention by the
ish Government Architect bOb Van Reeth in 2000, more than
gnments have been published in this procedure, resulting in
50 completed public architectural and infrastructural projects
his volume compiles 70 of these, from all over Flanders—from
coast to the Dutch border in the east—to illustrate the astoundity
of these projects. They prove that public architecture can be
hought-provoking, cooperative, and well-done at the same time.
k takes an extensive look at how this procedure works, how it is
by architects, politicians, and clients—and ultimately, at the
ing public architecture in Flanders as an example for other
s to study closely.
Urban and rural areas alike witness severe dynamics.
Moreover, understandings of what constitutes the urban
and the rural are changing, too. Metapolis conceptualizes
the network of urban and rural settlements interconnected
by flows of people, goods, and information. How can this
Metapolis be understood and evolve in a more sustainable
manner? Using the example of two study regions in Lower
Saxony – a federal state of Germany consisting of few
large cities and predominantly medium-sized and small
towns, suburbs, and villages – this volume presents an
innovative analytical framework called TOPOI. It offers
a new perspective on urban and rural settlement types.
Based on this, distinct scenarios explore innovative
solutions for sustainable planning and design along the
