During the May 22 Obetz City Council
meeting, City Administrator Rod Davisson
told council about a bill winding its way
through the Ohio House of Representatives
that, if passed, could mean major changes
in the way the city would approach eminent
domain cases.
“The legislature is working to pass
House Bill 64, which makes some significant
changes to the eminent domain law,
not in our favor or in the favor of any city
or village,” said Davisson. “They want to
eliminate our ability to enact eminent
domain for recreation trails.”
Davisson said he helped draft some
opponent testimony for the Ohio Municipal
League, which is an association of more
than 730 cities and villages in Ohio.
“House Bill 64 aims to curtail the application
of eminent domain for recreation
trails,” according to Davisson and the Ohio
Municipal League. “However, it is important
to understand that recreation trails
are not mere luxuries, they are vital community
assets. They promote health and
wellness, connect neighborhoods, provide
safe routes for non-motorized transportation,
and enhance the livability of our
municipalities.”
to smile as you celebrate this
See Pages 9 - 12
“The proposed restrictions on the use of
eminent domain for recreation trails reflect
a narrow interpretation of the concept of
‘public use’ as found in our constitutions,”
according to Davisson and the Ohio
Municipal League. “The notion of public
use is not confined to being adjacent to
public roads and within the municipality’s
right-of-way. In fact, the broad interpretation
of ‘public use’ has been upheld by the
U.S. Supreme Court in cases like Kelo v.
City of New London, demonstrating that
public use encompasses not just traditional
uses like roads and public buildings, but
also broader community development projects.”
In addition, according to Davisson. the
legislature wants to change some of the
ways that municipalities have to negotiate
eminent domain.
“All of those changes make it harder for
municipalities to accomplish that,” said
Davisson. “Eminent domain is a last resort.
It’s of course constitutionally protected and
advised in both the Ohio and the United
States constitutions and case law is supported,
and what the legislature is trying to
do I think really goes overboard on that and
puts municipalities in a weaker position
when they do have to take land.”
ROOT EXPOSURE SENSITIVITY
CW@AltercareOnline.net
AltercareOnline.com
As we grow older, a number of
factors may cause gums to recede,
leaving the upper portion of
the root exposed and vulnerable.
Although this shrinking of the
gums, called gingival recession, is
age-related, it is not found in
every older adult and varies in degree
with each individual.
Gum recession and exposed
roots may be the ultimate result
of a build-up plaque that was not
adequately removed. Also, improper
or aggressive tooth brushing
can irritate the gums and
gradually cause them to recede. A
patient’s root sensitivity can range
from mild to severe and be triggered
by heat, cold, touch, and
certain spicy foods.
Treatment of sensitivity begins
with fluoride, which is absorbed
by the root, remineralizes the
tooth surface, and lessens the
pain. If you don’t find relief with a
fluoride rinse, your dentist may
prescribe a gel containing a
higher fluoride concentration. In
more extreme cases, your dentist
may recommend coating the root
with a protective veneer.
Township could add SRO
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
A second Madison Township police officer could join
the school resource officer staff in the Groveport
Madison School District for the next school term,
bringing the total number of officers to three.
A three-year memorandum of understanding with
the district was authorized by the Madison Township
trustees during their May 23 meeting. Groveport
Madison already contracts for one Madison Township
officer and one city of Groveport officer.
“I think, at the end of the day, we see the benefit of
SROs,” said Madison Township Police Chief Gary
York.
If the Groveport Madison Board of Education
agrees with the memorandum, the school district will
cover 70 percent of salary and benefit costs, along with
other costs such as training, equipment and uniforms.
The memorandum covers the 2023 through 2026
school years. A similar agreement was approved for a
single school resource officer with Canal Winchester
Local Schools.
“We need officers in the schools. It’s just a fact,” said
Trustee Chairman John Pritchard. “We wouldn’t be
asked back if we didn’t do a good job.”
As for moving from a one year to a multi-year contract
and from one officer to two, York said his department
wanted a commitment from the school district for
a longer term because he needs to hire another officer
to replace the second SRO position.
Once the school board approves their end of the
memorandum, York said he will post the positions,
which are bid upon by officers. The salary/benefit
Continued from page 1
Davisson said he cannot remember the last time the
city of Obetz has had an eminent domain case.
“In an ideal situation, you always just pay for the
land,” said Davisson. “And we’ve always done that. So
you say, ‘Well, why are we complaining about it?’
Because we might have to do one tomorrow. And you
don’t want those powers to be so weak that you can’t do
it, and then you become ineffectual for the people that
you represent.”
Davisson is concerned the law is unfair to municipalities
that are trying to do good things for its residents.
“Remember, eminent domain is for all of us, all of
the residents to be able to have some amenity, whatever
that thing could be,” said Davisson. “Sometimes it’s
parks, sometimes it’s recreation trails, sometimes it’s
roads. And occasionally you can’t come to an agreement
with a landowner and you have to go through
eminent domain. And when you do, you end up in a
process where there’s a neutral third party, a judge
who makes a decision on what the value of that land
is.”
One of the things the legislature wants to change in
the bill is, that once an offer is made, it can’t be
reduced. Davisson gave an example of a situation
where a city has offered $100,000 for a property and
then, after going through due diligence, finds out that
it is polluted or that it has old gas tanks on it.
“This law would not allow you to say, ‘We don’t want
to pay a $100,000 for it,’: said Davisson. “We pay something
less now that we found out all this stuff’s wrong
with it. That just doesn’t make any sense what they’re
trying to accomplish, so it’s certainly not helpful to us.
We will oppose it through the Ohio Municipal League.
So we'll see how it goes.”
range for resource officers are dependent upon their
current department salary.
The township will continue to cover the remaining
30 percent of the officer’s salary, etc. since they return
to active department duty when the school district is
on hiatus.
According to the 2022-23 memorandum, the township’s
resource officer splits their time between the
high school, middle schools, and elementary schools.
Under the new agreement, one Madison Township
officer will spend their day at the high school in and
the township second officer will rotate between the
other buildings, unless needed at the high school.
“We’re excited about this opportunity,” said York.
“We have a really great partnership with the school.”
Other Madison Township news
•The trustees approved a Clinical Affiliation agreement
with Columbus State Community for student
ride-alongs in township medics.
“We’re excited to be a part of that again,” said
Madison Township Assistant Fire Chief Chas Adams.
The affiliation agreement provides a clinical learning
experience for students with the fire department
and defines the roles and responsibility of Columbus
State and Madison Township.
•Jets will crisscross the skies above Rickenbacker
Airport during a June 16-18 Columbus Air Show, but
Madison Township Administrator Susan Brobst is concerned
about what happens on the ground when sightseers
outside the airport grounds look for a viewing
site.“We strongly discourage people from parking on
the roads and warehouse parking areas,” said Brobst.
“There’s going to be a lot of traffic in the area. Either
stay away or have a lot of patience.”
The Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, Ohio Dairy
Producers Association, and Ohio Council of Retail
Merchants are proponents of the bill.
The Ohio Municipal League, Ohio Chamber of
Commerce, Ohio Business Roundtable, Ohio Trails
Partnership/Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, American
Electric Power, American Petroleum Institute-Ohio,
Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission, Central
Ohio Transit Authority, and many cities and villages
oppose the bill.
Other Obetz news
•Obetz Mayor Angela Kirk and city officials are
working on a couple of vehicle ordinances.
“We’re seeing a lot of semi truck parking in the
neighborhoods,” said Kirk. “It’s not just a random
truck here and there, but lots of those parking next to
the houses.”
Kirk said they are also discussing one for recreational
vehicles.
“We discussed a couple of years ago allowing recreational
vehicles for an extended period of time during
the season,” said Kirk. “We want to try some type of
resolution where owner can keep their recreational
vehicle for a certain period of time while they’re either
working on it, unloading it, or loading it to take it back
into storage.”
•Obetz Police Chief Mike Confer said in the past
two weeks, his department has taken 1,271 calls for
service; patrolled 5,693 miles; issued 38 moving violations,
five of those were for speeding; made five misdemeanor
arrests; one felony arrest, generated 12 offense
reports; handled five crashes; and one domestic violence
incident.

Traffic
The volume of visitors to the air show
and accompanying traffic on the area roads
in and around Groveport are a concern for
Groveport Police Chief Casey Adams.
Adams said the Groveport Police are
planning to increase traffic patrol during
the days of the air show.
“This extra patrol will be responsible for
keeping traffic flowing as normal as possible
along State Route 317, Groveport Road,
and the roads that lead in and out of the
warehouses surrounding the airport,” said
Adams. “The extra patrol will also handle
calls for service at the warehouses, handle
traffic complaints, and any auto accidents
that may affect traffic flow during the air
show times.”
Adams said air show officials told him
that about 15,000 spectators are expected
to come to the air show daily. He expects
the heaviest surge of traffic outbound from
the airport to be from 3:45-6 p.m.
According to the air show website, the
Franklin County Sheriff’s Office has developed
traffic plans and will have several
officers helping direct traffic at intersections
along Alum Creek Drive and
Rickenbacker Parkway and other key
intersections.
According to Adams, air show officials
indicated that half of the visitors to the
show leaving each day will be directed
south on Rickenbacker Parkway into
Pickaway County to State Route 762
House of
Representatives
Approves Eleven
Measures
This past week the Ohio House of Representatives
completed a busy itinerary, passing ten bills and
one resolution on to the State Senate for its approval.
Every measure garnered true bipartisan
support, winning at least 80 votes from the 99-
member body. I’ve summarized several of these
measures below.
House Bill (HB 27) requires our state public universities
to provide financial cost, aid, and average
salary data in an easy-to-understand one-page format.
In this manner, students and parents will understand
better the cost of a college education and
the dollars typical new graduates earn in the field
to which the student has gained admission. I was a
co-sponsor of this piece of legislation.
HB 57 calls for indexing to inflation the value of a
property that is not subject to a portion of property
tax because it qualifies for the homestead exemption.
This measure particularly will help senior citizens
and military veterans maintain financial
stability and stay in their homes.
HB 105 reduces the penalty for an individual filing
a late municipal income tax return from $25 per
month to a one-time-only $25 fine. It does not
erase any of the actual tax obligation an individual
may have accrued. This measure will help protect
students who may have worked in one municipality
for a summer job and had income tax withheld but
failed to file an actual return at the end of the year.
HB 50 is a criminal justice measure designed to help
reduce recidivism among formerly incarcerated individuals.
It allows them to petition the court for a
certificate of qualification for housing (CQH), which
could be granted for individuals designated as rehabilitated.
If granted, the CQH will help make it
easier for the individual to gain access to housing
and by providing provide some legal protection for
the landlord.
Additional measures: HB 28 designates March as
Triple Negative Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
This type of breast cancer occurs more frequently in
younger and African American women. HB 61 designates
November 19th as “James A. Garfield Day”
in Ohio. Garfield, from Ohio, was our twentieth
president and no special state designation had
been in place for his birthday. The final measure
was a resolution to support the Ohio Commission
for the United States Semiquincentennial, America’s
250th birthday celebration that will take place in
three years. It affirms the legislature’s full and enthusiastic
support for the activities leading up to
and culminating on July 4, 2026.
(Dave Dobos represents the 10th District in the Ohio
House of Representatives, which consists of parts of
New life ahead for the former Hoover Y Park
By Linda Dillman
BALTIMORE, OH 43105
After a pandemic delay, Columbus and
Franklin County Metro Parks is moving off
the drafting board and onto the grounds of
the former Hoover Y Park in turning the
site at 1570 Rohr Road into public park
land.
A $1.5 million agreement for the park,
located in southeastern Franklin County,
was approved by the Board of Park
Commissioners of Columbus and Franklin
County in May 2020.
Steve Studenmund, planning & design
manager for Metro Parks, said the planning
and design phase was expected to
start in 2021, but was delayed due to
COVID. Work has since resumed.
“We are looking into acquiring the adjacent
quarry to the west,” said Studenmund.
“These two parcels combined create a lot of
opportunities such as water access, river
access, nature trails, multi-use trails, passive
recreation and programmed spaces
with the existing structures. We are currently
constructing additional parking lots
and access drives. We are also in the
process of improving the Optimist Lodge
and Ingram building.”
Studenmund said it will take most of
2023 to upgrade facilities, utilities, parking,
trails, and play areas. The park system
is tentatively looking at a late 2023 opening,
depending on several construction
activities.
A giant slide was removed years ago by
the YMCA as a safety hazard and a caretaker’s
house was demolished this year.
However, several buildings and structures
still remain, as well as multiple electric
plug-in units used by campers during a
music jamboree.
“We are evaluating the usefulness and
function of all structures to see if they fit
into the parks operational plans and to see
if they meet current building codes,” said
Studenmund, who said there is also a possibility
the electrical connections could be
used in a similar manner for events.
The park system has yet to pick a name
for the former YMCA park and quarry. As
for connectivity to other Metro Parks,
Studenmund said, given the location, connecting
the site by a trail to other Metro
Park's will be very challenging.
“We are excited for the opportunities
these sites present to park visitors,” said
Studenmund.
The site is bordered by Rohr Road to the
south, farmland on the north, Bixby Road
to the east and homes and the quarry to the
west.
Many people remember the infamous
Granddaddy Slide, which started at the top
of a rise in the park and took riders on a
wild and bumpy ride to the bottom of the
farmer, known as the Optimist Lodge,
served as a rustic event center for the
YMCA, which owned the park for 77 years.
The park was also a frequent site for
outdoor weddings, reunions, meetings,
summer camps, and a yearly haunted hike
through the woods and paths surrounding
the area. Musicians Against Childhood
Cancer held annual concerts at the park for
many years, attracting musicians and
campers from across the nation.
The YMCA originally purchased the 60-
acre property on Nov. 17, 1947.
HTHS students participate
in leadership collaborative
On May 16, students from Hamilton
Township High School presented research
and data from a year of learning and growing
together in the Ohio State Student
Leadership Research Collaborative.
The students who presented at the
event included Alexandria Williams, Olivia
Taylor, Penelope Taylor, Jeremiah Hicks,
and RJ Santmire.
“Theses students were chosen for this
group because they demonstrate great
leadership skills within other groups that
they are involved in,” said group advisor
Byron Allgood. “The students did such a
good job during this collaborative, they
were chosen to attend the National
Student Leadership Summit this summer.”
The group of students had to identify a
problem within the school community and
collect data about that problem. They then
needed to come up with possible solutions
to that problem. Students chose to
research the problem of “Lack of Clear
Communication to the Student Body.” The
group recommended a few ideas to increase
communication among their peers such as
a bulletin board in the cafeteria, and planning
an information fair for the students.
CW Labor Day Parade
celebrates educators
The Canal Winchester community
announced it will celebrate teachers as the
grand marshal of this year’s Canal
Winchester Labor Day Parade.
The parade theme recognizes Canal
Winchester Schools teachers by celebrating
the work these “everyday superheroes”
do for the children of the community.
This year’s Labor Day Parade will take
place on Sept. 4 at 1 p.m.
Other school groups will also participate
with floats and marchers in the parade.
“Labor Day is all about celebrating the
American worker, and we couldn’t think of
a more honorable grand marshal than the
Canal Winchester Local School District
educators,” said Marie Gibbons, Parade
Chair for the Labor Day Festival.
The Labor Day committee selected the
“Superheroes” theme and invited the CW
Schools staff to be part of the celebration.
“We are so thankful to the parade committee
for recognizing the labor of the
teachers who are here to make a difference
in the lives of Canal Winchester students,”
said Canal Winchester Schools
Superintendent Kiya Hunt. “When
prospective employees ask us about the
district, we always tell them how lucky we
are to have an incredible and supportive
community. This is yet another example of
the strength of our community when we all
come together to make Canal Winchester a
great place to live, learn, and work.”
AEP rate increase,
stay in the know
Last month, I launched a new podcast
called D3 Live to share resources I
learned about that impact District 3 residents.
My guest this month was Angie
Rybalt, AEP’s Director of Customer Experience.
In this episode, we addressed frequently
asked questions about AEP’s
rate changes, how to read your bill, and
what you need to know about the impending
changes.
In case you missed it, effective June
2023, AEP plans to implement a rate increase
averaging approximately 28% for
its customers in Columbus, Ohio. According
to the AEP website, global demand,
global supply chain issues,
economic uncertainty, and the continued
war in Ukraine have impacted electricity
production costs. These expenses
have necessitated the rate adjustment
to ensure continued reliability and sustainability
of the electric grid.
While the specific impact will depend
on individual usage patterns, the average
household can expect to see an increase
of up to $40 per month. Small
businesses and commercial establishments
may face higher costs, potentially
impacting their bottom line and overall
competitiveness.
To mitigate the rate increase's impact,
Columbus consumers can explore various
strategies. These include adopting
energy-efficient practices, such as using
LED bulbs, optimizing heating and cooling
systems, and minimizing energy
consumption during peak hours. Additionally,
shopping around for alternative
energy providers or considering solar
panel installations could offer long-term
cost-saving benefits.
Results Matter, so act now to get prepared.
Stay tuned for the next episode,
“That book drives
me crazy,” she said.
“That’s the point,” I
replied. “It’s supposed
to drive you crazy.”
She paused, then slowly smiled.
Books are great when they give one a revelation.
Same with art and music. Life can
condense in a moment, and it’s all about the
moment.
Along that vein, I recently received a nice
card and personal note from an old friend.
The card was imprinted with the word
“Komorebi,” which in Japanese can be translated
to English to mean, “Sunlight that filters
through the leaves of trees.”
After reading her card I went outside to
the dogwood tree in my back yard. The tree
was bursting with beautiful white spring
blooms. I sat under the tree and watched the
sunlight filter through the blooms and
emerging leaves as they fluttered in the
breeze. The sunlight illuminated the blooms
and dappled the ground beneath tree. The
tree was a universe of its own with each
bloom a star in the canopy.
Because of this experience, I plan to enjoy
the view from beneath this tree as the seasons
progress so I can absorb how the sunlight
changes over time as it filters through
the leaves as they, too, change.
Come winter it will be a whole new experience
as the tree’s bare branches will be silhouetted
by the low angle from the sun’s
rays
Her card and note gave me a special gift
of a timeless moment, and future moments,
beneath the tree.
Thoughts of sunlight bring me to another
tale of one’s experience with moment and
light.
A long time friend of mine called to tell
me that he takes note of a particular day
each May when the angle of the sunlight
noticeably changes from the doldrums of
winter and fickle spring and heralds the
coming of summer.
“It’s a brighter light,” he told me.
It brings back memories for him as a boy
in elementary school of when he was itching
to get out of his Catholic school formal student
attire and light out for the territories of
summer.
It was a conflicted feeling for him, too,
because his thoughts of happy freedom from
the structure of school were simultaneously
coupled with wary thoughts of the open time
of perceived endless summer.
“Well, now what am I going to do?” he
thought back then.
Enjoy the time, because moments are
what we have.
A 4-2 majority of Canal Winchester Council members
voted down a salary increase for themselves providing
a 3 percent capped increase in 2024 and another
3 percent jump in 2025.
According to Council President Chuck Milliken,
council has not had a raise since at least 2013.
Had the resolution passed, council salaries would
have been $6,790 in 2024 and $6,994 in 2025. The
council president’s salary in 2024 would have been
$7,469 and then $7,693 in 2025. The vice president’s
salary would have been set at $7,129 in 2024 and
$7,343 the following year.
Council members Patrick Shea, Mike Walker, Bob
Clark and Milliken voted against the resolution during
the June 5 meeting. Laurie Amick and Steve Buskirk
voted for the increase. Jill Amos was absent and
excused from the meeting.
With no action being taken, Law Director Thaddeus
Boggs said the current salary scale will prevail from
2024 through 2025.
Public Service Director Matt Peoples alerted council
about a life saving action taken by water treatment
plant worker Chris Hartung while he was out jogging
CW celebrates 101 years
of Labor Day festivities
The 101st annual Canal Winchester Labor Day
Festival, presented by Diley Ridge Medical Center,
will fill the streets of historic downtown Canal
Winchester over Labor Day weekend.
Opening ceremonies will take place on the festival
main stage on Sept. 2 at noon. The fun continues Sept.
2 until 11 p.m., Sept. 3 from 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., and
Sept. 4 from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“The Canal Winchester Labor Day Festival is celebrating
over a century of family-friendly activities in
our downtown during the Labor Day weekend,” said
Carolyn Ebert, Labor Day Festival Board President.
“With so many food vendors, arts and crafts vendors,
rides, games, free entertainment, a car show, and our
renowned parade, there is something sure to please
everyone in the family.”
Although the full schedule is still being finalized,
the Labor Day Festival Committee promises to deliver
the fun, family-friendly festival that the community
has grown to love. Midway rides and games return to
the historic downtown all weekend long, and kids will
ride for free from noon to 4 p.m. as part of Free Ride
Saturday, courtesy of Wright-Patt Credit Union, Inc.
Free festival entertainment will fill the streets with
sounds all weekend long. American country singersongwriter
and Ohio native Rayne Johnson will headline
the main stage Sept. 2 at 9 p.m. Silver Springs,
the Sept. 3 night headliner, will have guests doing double-takes
as the band covers over four decades of the
best Fleetwood Mac songs.
For those over 21, the Ugly Mug Beer Pavilion will
be located near Stradley Park. This is the first year
that the Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area
(DORA) will be in place, so visitors may sip, stroll,
shop, and explore the festival grounds from noon to
close as well.
The Labor Day Festival will again become a showplace
for some of the finest hot-rods and classic cars in
central Ohio on Sept. 3. In past years, over 200
antique, muscle, and classic cars have been on display.
one evening.
According to Peoples, when Hartung got back to the
plant, he heard someone yelling for help. Hartung
went across the street and an elderly neighbor was laying
on her porch and could not get up.
“He called 911 and stayed with her until help
arrived,” said Peoples. “Obviously, they (family members)
were very appreciative. The grandson came over
and gave him a nice box of chocolates. That’s the type
of employees we have working here. He (Hartung) didn’t
think it was that big of a deal and said anyone
would have done that.”
New CW library
The Columbus Metropolitan Library system is in
the planning stages for a new Canal Winchester
library site, but wants to give council an idea of what
could arise on their land bordering Groveport Road.
Development Director Lucas Haire said CML is
inviting council on a June 16 bus tour of the Gahanna
library branch.
“It is very similar to what they want to build here at
the site they purchased,” said Haire.
The new, two-story Gahanna branch opened in
March. The 35,300 square-foot facility cost $21.8 million
and features a drive-up window for patron reserve
pick-ups and drop-offs.
The cruise-in, hosted by C-Town Cruisers, will start at
10 a.m. and will wrap up at 4 p.m. with trophy presentations.
Registration is just $15 per car and begins
downtown at 9 a.m. on West Waterloo Street.
On Sept. 4, enjoy the festival’s annual Canal
Winchester Labor Day Parade, presented by Kelly
Abbott & the “A” Team, Howard Hanna Realtors. The
parade steps off from Canal Winchester High School at
1 p.m. and makes its way through the city’s historic
downtown.
Since 1920, the Canal Winchester Labor Day
Festival has proudly partnered with the local government
and nearby businesses to host the festival. Labor
Day Festival organizers recognize all festival supporters,
with special thanks to the city of Canal Winchester
and the festival’s presenting sponsor, Diley Ridge
Medical Center. For all Labor Day Festival details,
including those to come, visit www.cwlaborday.org.
CW City Council meetings
Canal Winchester City Council meetings are held
on the first and third Monday of every month.
Meetings begin at 7 p.m. The meetings are open to the
public. Council meets in work session at 6 p.m. prior to
each city council meeting to discuss legislative items
and other issues of the city prior to being included on
a city council agenda. The first work session of the
month focuses on finance/economic development items
and the second monthly work session focuses on service/safety
items. While each work session includes specific
areas of focus, other items may be brought before
council as needed.
The next stage in the renovation of Lockbourne’s Historic Hall - construction of a
patio and disability ramp - was accomplished through the donation of material and
labor from the Nicholas Savko and Sons Company. SAVKO workers, led by foreman
Gary Geiger, installed over 60 cubic yards of concrete from May 22-26 at the site
behind the hall.

Kids are savvy movie-goers
The presence of children at a movie
screening is not always an enjoyable experience
for me — I find that they get up too
often to use the bathroom, seem to like the
noise the straw makes as it sucks up the
liquid dregs of their big gulps, and prefer to
use their outdoor voice to ask the random
and related questions that pop into their
minds — but I have to admit some of the
observations they have can be spot-on.
I went to see “The Little Mermaid” and
“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” as a
part of a summer blockbuster movie review
mashup and came away impressed with
the comments kids made about the aesthetics
of the films and their complete
befuddlement about plot threads, character
development, and movie length.
The consensus of the younger audience
was that, while they liked both movies,
they saw each film had strengths and
weaknesses. I cannot disagree with their
overall assessment and I extend my congratulations
to the parents of these wickedly
smart humans.
In the case of “The Little Mermaid,” the
primary complaint from the children was it
was too dark to see some of the underwater
scenes and the run time of two hours it was
too long. I have to push back on the former
because it could have been so much worse.
When the trailers first came out for this
film, the lighting made everything look
dark, nothing like the original animated
feature on which it is based. Thankfully, the
lighting situation in the movie was better
than advertised though it was devoid of
vibrant flashes to make a lasting impression,
at least visually.
A problem with this film is an issue with
almost all of the live-action adaptations
Disney pulls from its classics vault: the
unwillingness to deviate from the original
material. Director Rob Marshall and writer
David Magee made a shot-for-shot and
word-for-word remake of the 1989 animated
film and sprinkled in a few new above
water scenes to add development to the
human world that the title character so
desperately yearns to be a part of.
What saves this uninspired live-action
film is the inclusion of most of the original
music by Howard Ashman and Alan
Menken and the casting of Halle Bailey,
Jonah Hauer-King, and Melissa McCarthy,
who play the little mermaid Ariel, her
human love interest Prince Eric, and the
chaos-loving sea witch Ursula, respectively.
One of the best uses of the expanded run
time is the focus on the growing connection
between Ariel and Prince Eric so it starts
to make a little more sense as to why she
may be more willing to leave her family
and fins behind to walk amongst the mere
mortals in the human world.
In the case of “Spider-Man: Across the
Spider-Verse,” the complaint I heard from
the kids was that there was too much going
on — “It hurts my eyes,” said one - and that
the ending left them feeling a bit angry.
Some concerns I had for this sequel to
the Academy Award winning, “Into the
Spider-Verse”
(2018) were
whether it
could top the
greatness that was
that movie. There is a
lot of negativity about
animated films and
superhero movies, but
The Reel Deal
Dedra
Cordle
that film is regarded as one of the most
influential films in the past decade as it
opened up possibilities of the multiverse in
theatrical comic book adaptations and
sparked a new visual style.
The plot within “Into the Spider-Verse”
wasn’t that original — it’s another origin
story of the famed webslinger but this time
placing the ground-breaking Miles
Morales, a half-Black, half-Latino teenager,
into the mask and spandex - but it was
the visualization of the story through the
perspective of a comic book come to life
that made a strong impact on the audience.
(I get chills when I watch Miles take his
“leap of faith” across Brooklyn set to the
score by Daniel Pemberton overlaid with
the song, “What’s Up Danger” by Black
Caviar and Blackway.)
Like all great sequels, “Across the
Spider-Verse” builds on the tricks of its
predecessor and continues with the multiperspective
structure of “Into the Spider-
Verse.” While Miles (voiced by Shameik
Moore) is front and center as he tries to
balance his life as a student with his life as
a superhero, his story gives up some
ground to Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld),
the Spider-Woman of a parallel Earth
whom he met in the 2018 film.
Their loneliness and their desperation to
recapture the feeling of not being the only
webslinger in their world leads them to the
“Spider Society,” an interdimensional squad
of Spider-Beings who are tasked with stopping
anomalies from bleeding into other
universes. It is led by the humorless Miguel
O’Hara (Oscar Isaac) who considers Miles
an anomaly since he should never have been
“chosen” to be a Spider-Man.
This push-and-pull between the two
heroes is a primary plot point. The secondary
one, which is to be expanded upon in the
third installment next year, is the introduction
of the villain Spot (Jason Schwartzman)
who can access interdimensional portals
through the markings on his body.
“Across the Spider-Verse” is darker than
its predecessor but it has a lot of the heart
found within the first installment and the
visual style continues to be unrivaled. The
thousand-plus animators deserve all the
credit in the world for their use of the color
and design toward making each Spider-
Being and their respective world unique. It
is breathtaking to see on the big screen,
but it sometimes makes for a “too much
going on” feeling, therefore diminishing the
congruent story that is taking place.
