erched on a picturesque bluff with 

breathtaking views of Crows Pond 

and neighboring harbors, this Chatham 

hideaway blends contemporary design and 

traditional Cape Cod shingle-style architecture. 

Merging with the landscape as if it had always belonged 

there, the newly constructed home sits on a coveted, 

salt-kissed stretch of land that the homeowners knew 

well. For the longtime residents of the neighborhood, 

the opportunity to purchase the property came at the 

perfect time. 

The homeowners consulted ARCHWRIGHT Fine Home 

Builders and Muldoon Architects to create a design 

driven by the natural beauty of the area. To this end, the 

home’s exterior features a warm brown palette with green 

trimmings, natural red roof shingles, and enviro-bleach 

siding that welcomes the surrounding habitat as the 

primary spectacle. “The clients made the process easy 

for us. They have excellent taste, and knew what they 

wanted,” notes Paul Muldoon, principal and founder of 

Muldoon Architects. Expansive windows provide stunning 

views toward the serene landscape, and elegant interiors 

exude a coastal charm with clean lines, calming blue tones 

and organic elements. Custom cabinetry extends into a 

cozy coffee nook that flows seamlessly off of the kitchen. 

The tranquil interiors harbor comfortable year-round living, 

while outdoor gathering spaces beckon the promise of 

warm summer days, including a custom pool designed by 

Environmental Pools. 

Cara Meneses, co-founder of ARCHWRIGHT, notes 

that efficiency and decisiveness were essential to the 

project’s success. “We needed to be as efficient as 

possible, as we were working with a one-year turnover,” 

notes Meneses. Fortunately, a sublime synergy among 

all involved ensured that the construction process was 

smooth sailing. But breaking ground on the treasured

yet highly protected area wasn’t without its challenges. 

Undulating terrain and strict conservation regulations 

required a selective approach to stabilizing the landscape. 

“The foundation was challenging, but we wanted to make 

sure that the efforts to cooperate with the conservation 

considerations would be sustainable for years to come,” 

says Mike Mailloux, whose role as the project manager was 

instrumental to the success of the project. 

“This home’s design is a direct response to the site,” 

Muldoon explains. “We wanted to maximize water 

views from as many vantage points as possible, and 

part of that was to create transparency.” What emerged 

was an intelligently placed glass stair tower that offers 

unparalleled views from the inside out. From the exterior, 

the cutting-edge design adds a striking visual element 

to the home’s facade that creates an arresting focal 

point toward the sea. From the interior, the tower’s floorto-ceiling 

windows serve as a reminder of the natural 


splendor that surrounds the home. “There was a lot 

involved in executing the complexities of this stair, and we 

were all proud of the way it turned out,” says Meneses. 

Soft lighting ensures the glimmer of golden hour 

continues to illuminate the tower even as the sun begins 

to set. Aligning the home with the sun’s path was also 

a key consideration for Muldoon, as the homeowners 

prefer a sundrenched bedroom. The home was positioned 

with eastward views, allowing every bedroom with a view 

to capture the morning sun. An extraordinary kinship 

between the land and architecture is evident from every 

angle on this property, echoing the symbiosis of all 

involved. “The team effort and collaboration were just 

paramount with this project,” says Muldoon. Illustrating 

a seamless union of style and architecture, the heirloom 

home blends contemporary innovation with a timeless 

idyllicism that is sure to stand the test of time.

Family Delight 

SV Design designs a dreamy 

Rhode Island home that prioritizes 

family living, cultivates connection, 

and embraces idyllic surroundings. 

As one of four family homes on a cherished coastal 

enclave beaming with generational memories, this 

spacious property redefines the very essence of ‘family 

first’. This theme of family was at the forefront of every 

design discourse between the client and architect Katy 

Finkenzeller of SV Design. With extended families 

occupying the other three independently-owned homes, 

it was important to integrate a sense of community 

and connection into the fourth home. The result is 

a quintessential Rhode Island summer retreat with 

thoughtfully-designed architecture and interiors that bring 

the whole family together. 


Bathed in the gentle glow of summer light, 

the interiors harmonize with the tranquil coastal 

surroundings through a soft pastel palette and effortless 

integration of indoor/outdoor leisure spaces.

This was not the first project SV Design had worked on 

with this client. Although a vibrant palette was their usual 

go-to, the client opted for a more subdued pastel color 

array for the interiors to harmonize with surrounding 

natural elements. Happy to oblige with the request for 

softer tones, Senior Project Manager and Interior Designer 

Shelby Littlefield incorporated key pops of color and 

whimsical touches to reflect the fun-loving personality and 

breezy summer lifestyle of the client. “With SV Design 

doing both the architecture and interior design, it’s an 

amazing process because we can curate everything for the 

client,” says Finkenzeller. Personalized touches include a 

secret door in the bunkroom, sea creature bathroom towel 

hooks, a surfboard bench in the mudroom, and—believe 

it or not-–a cedar shingle-clad slide that offers a playful 

descent between upper and lower level patios. 

The home’s design ensured that all of the principal living 

spaces and primary suite found their home on the second 

floor, which boasts the best views of the sea. Designed as 

an “upside down” house, as SV Design describes it, the 

kitchen and living room peer toward the water, while the 

first floor houses a cozy family room, beach gear storage 

space, and a mudroom conducive to a laid-back entryway 

to and from the beach. 

The configuration offers a dedicated formal entrance 

into the second floor level, as seen from the front 

facade. Crossing the threshold, views of the ocean and 

bright natural light offer a resplendent greeting into the 

living room, amplified by a large eyebrow dormer and 

sliding glass doors. Treated oak wood ceilings imbue 

the space with character and warmth that embraces a

season comfort to accommodate the family’s frequent 

autumn visits. Holding court as a centerpiece is a bubble 

chandelier that mirrors the captivating allure of the 

surrounding aquatic world. Sliding doors reveal a second 

floor balcony that offers breathtaking sunset views that 

illuminate an al-fresco dining and leisure space. Adjacent 

to it, a fully stocked bar is conveniently located. Just steps 

away lies the heart of the home–the kitchen. Here, the 

entire family gathers to cook and enjoy one another’s 

company. Expansive windows with views toward an iconic 

chapel are framed by a crisp blue tile backsplash and 

neutral cabinetry. 

On the home’s exterior, coastal charm rings true with white 

cedar shingles, a yellow cedar roof, and diamond and 

wave shingles placed on the front gables to create texture 

and variety. A two-floor garage and guest house are linked 

to the main home by way of an elegant footbridge that 

features an archway that perfectly frames a view toward 

the sea. With an abundance of intentionally designed 

connection points, the home embodies family living. “It’s 

fun as a designer to feel like you’re empowering people to 

live their fullest simply through creating a beautiful living 

space to enjoy every day,” says Finkenzeller. As a product 

of SV Design’s family-centered and personalized design 

approach, the house becomes more than a home, but an 

all-encompassing family delight.

‘social barn’ with 

many functions. 

As family and social networks grow throughout the years, 

devising a plan for the ultimate gathering space is an 

appealing endeavor. For one long-standing client of 

Polhemus Savery DaSilva Architects & Builders (PSD), the 

opportunity came at the perfect time. 

Located across the street from the client’s PSD-designed 

and built Cape Cod getaway home, a large property with 

an existing house and landscape suited for renovation 

and expansion became available. “There wasn’t much 

opportunity to expand on their other house,” notes John 

DaSilva, PSD’s Design Principal. “When this property came 

up, it was perfect.” With aspirations to create a dynamic 

space dedicated to leisure and entertainment for their 

large extended family, the client sought PSD’s expertise to 

create this stunning indoor/outdoor Social Barn. 

From the outside in, the structure blends contemporary 

and timeless design. “The clients didn’t want a rustic

Landscape Architect. A bocce court, fire pit, and cutting garden 

transforms the surrounding landscape into an all-encompassing retreat 

that serves as an extension of the social barn.

lodge per se, but they also didn’t want something that 

felt institutional,” says DaSilva. “They were interested in 

having some fun with the design.” An exposed fir wood 

post and beam frame is elevated by detailing and fixtures 

that offer a contemporary twist. When the sun sets, hidden 

lights spark a magical day-to-night transformation, with a 

dynamic color sequence lighting display that illuminates 

both exterior and interior spaces. 

On the ground level, a fireplace and television area 

holds court adjacent to the bar and kitchen, with large 

steel-framed windows and doors that open up to the 

surrounding landscape on the other three sides of the 

space. A freestanding steel and fir stair leads to a half 

basketball court that features a dramatic high ceiling with 

arched fir beams. “To avoid an overwhelmingly largelooking 

building, we suggested the basketball court 

be half underground,” notes DaSilva. The arched roof 

peers above ground, with a solar panel array that powers 

the complex. To complete the indoor retreat space, an 

exercise room, locker room, and sauna were also installed. 

With creativity and innovation emerges a PSD masterpiece 

that offers a leisure and entertainment space with endless 

possibilities. Integrated seamlessly into idyllic natural 

surroundings, and built with high quality and durable 

materials, the social barn is a year-round retreat to be 

enjoyed for generations to come.

The enchantment of Osterville runs deep for the owners of this idyllic 

property, whose roots in the area stretch back generations. It’s no surprise 

that they chose this cherished coastal community to build a summer retreat 

of their own. The private enclave that came to be is a quintessential Cape 

Cod family compound with a personality all its own. Striking yet serene 

Benjamin Moore Athabasca blue shutters and doors hint toward the colorful 

and chic interiors that lie within, while mirroring the bliss of summer skies. The 

cedar shingle front exterior features dueling gables and chimneys, balanced 

beautifully by a central barrel vault that creates a fluid and welcoming motion 

toward the center of the house.

The kitchen island color echoes the soft Athabasca 

blue exterior details, and features Jenny Lind legs that 

add a touch of texture and playfulness to the space. 


Though spacious enough to accommodate the growing 

family of seven, the concept was to create the feeling that 

“no one is too far away,” says James Golden, principal 

of James Phillip Golden Architect. “There was a lot of 

thought put into the home, for an overall feeling of 

connection throughout the entire property.” To achieve 

this, Golden designed all of the primary structures around 

the center courtyard and pool area, which lies adjacent 

to a pool house and garage, the latter of which features a 

guest house perched above it. 

The current footprint is an impressive feat on what was initially 

a tight lot. Fortunately the steadfast team at Bayside 

Building was up for the challenge. Brian Dacey, owner of 

the firm, alongside father-son build team Jimmy and Nick 

Bowes, met with the homeowners to formulate an approach 

that would accomplish all of their desires. “To say 

that we maximized the lot would be an understatement,” 

Nick recalls. The resulting layout is open, airy, and ideal for 

easy going summer living and entertaining. 

The congenial layout prompted interior designer Jocelyn 

Chiappone, owner of Digs Design Company, to create a 

cohesive look for the space in which color takes center 

stage. The beloved Athabasca blue accents interior 

selections, alongside a palette of blue and green that flows 

harmoniously throughout the main living spaces. “We all 

embraced that hue and it’s wonderful to see how it ties 

the home together while also showcasing its versatility,” 

notes Chiappone. Primarily traditional furniture silhouettes 

provide the perfect canvas for Chiappone’s incorporation 

of bold patterns and layers. Combining the chic aesthetic 

of Palm Beach with a classic and preppy Cape Cod style, 

the overall concept hearkens to her signature Digs Mix. 

“I always find it interesting to meld aesthetics,” says 

Chiappone. “For this project, we have pattern and punchy 

colors alongside calming neutrals and vintage pieces 

that ground the look. The overall effect is chic, yet classic 

and comfortable.” The balanced juxtaposition not only 

adds visual interest and dimension to the design, but also

paneled staircase, and chinoiserie style built-ins allude 

to classic Cape Cod, the interiors are brimming with 

elements of surprise. “We wanted to add personality to 

the design without disturbing the flow of the main living 

areas,” notes Chiappone. To do this, Chiappone added 

pops of aqua, vibrant green, yellow, and raspberry in the 

mudroom, laundry room, and bunk room, all of which 

were closed off from the open layout. “The trick to mixing 

in bold color and pattern is to pay just as much attention 

to the neutral elements that allow the eye to rest and 

delineate the color,” Chiappone explains. To create a 

dramatic impression upon entry, the great room club chairs 

feature a bold chevron on the back, while a solid neutral 

on the interior cushions invites a calming atmosphere 

when seated. Likewise, the kitchen makes a statement 

with bold tile, while the natural dining area serves as a 

quiet backdrop. Sleek dual 12-foot nano doors offer a 

breezy indoor-outdoor transition that sets the scene for a 

leisurely summer lifestyle. A chromatic cohesion continues 

into outdoor spaces, where eye-catching upholstery pops 

on neutral furnishings that highlight summer’s natural 

vibrance. Built for gathering and designed to enjoy, this 

Osterville gem is poised to charm all who enter.

A look behind the scenes of an immaculate new build in West Dennis. 

Overlooking the Bass River with views toward West 

Dennis Beach, this stately new construction celebrates 

the character of a timeless Cape Cod home. 

Traditional cedar exteriors, native flora surroundings, 

and abundant access to sand-lined river waters give 

the home a sense of place within the natural beauty 

of West Dennis. The masterfully executed build 

was a team effort, spearheaded by Paul Pfeiffer, JW 

Construction’s Operations Director for its Cape and 

Islands Division. Working in tandem with a highly 

skilled team of designers and craftsmen, Pfeiffer 

embodies the leadership required to produce such 

high-caliber results. 

As a custom home builder of nearly 30 years, 

with experience as Project Manager and a recent 

promotion to Operations Director, Pfeiffer knows 

the process well from all levels. “It’s important to 

collaborate on the finer details of construction and to 

make sure there is proper coordination to ensure that 

each detail is properly executed,” says Pfeiffer. “This 

was one of the more collaborative projects I’ve been 

on. Everyone really worked together to execute the 

highest quality work possible.” 

Exceptional quality is evident throughout all facets 

of the construction, and the finer details illuminate a 

consciously precise approach. The mindful selection 

of exterior trim materials respects the coastal land 

site’s vulnerability to the elements. “With the area’s 

exposure to weather, it’s important to make sure that 

all the details in exterior siding, roofing, and trim are 

executed correctly. We focused on bringing in highly 

skilled craftsmen for all of the exterior and interior 

finishes for that reason,” says Pfieffer. A salute to 

a classic Cape Cod aesthetic, the traditional cedar 

exterior is highlighted by crisply-painted white PVC 

trim. “We chose PVC for the home’s trim because it 

is stable, rot-resistant, and has a great tendency to 

accept and hold paint well,” says Pfeiffer. The interiors 

were also built to endure, starting from the ground 

up. “We did significant waterproofing in the basement 

so that there is no concern for flooding during heavy 

weather events.” 

The solid foundation supports a beautiful flow of 

interior living spaces on each level. Genuine mahogany 

handrails give a luxurious touch to the staircases and 

offer cohesion between floor levels, while charactergrade 

reclaimed oak flooring gives an antiqued feel 

to the home. Geometric archways and details exude 

brilliant craftsmanship, and give dimension to the 

space. “Those are the details that are really fun to work 

with because you have to make sure that everything 

that you do relates to another part of the house,” says 

Pfeiffer. “Seeing that everything aligns correctly is very 

satisfying in the end.” 

The project’s refined result speaks to a planning 

process that goes beyond the naked eye. Pfeiffer’s 

detailed filing system of architectural drawings and 

photo documentation helped everyone stay on the 

same page, and fueled a collective cohesion between 

all members of the build team. “It helps everyone stay 

in tune when you build what you’ve set out to build,” 

says Pfeiffer. “Our site supervisor for the project, Todd 

Cornell, really pulled together all of the different 

people onsite. He was quite instrumental in the 

success of the project.” 

The guiding light of Pfeiffer and Cornell’s excellent 

leadership is bolstered by their highly-skilled team 

of tradespeople who transformed architectural 

drawings into immaculate three-dimensional results. 

Some of the key trades used to complete the project 

are as follows: 9 Points Woodworking (millwork and 

cabinetry), Herrick and White Architectural Woodworkers 

(millwork and cabinetry), Miley Construction 

(trim installation), New England Painters (painting), and 

ARC Marble and Tile (bathroom tile and stone).

A bayside escape designed for relaxed comfort reveals 

the magic of the seascape. 


For those who dream of a coastal sanctuary, the allure of 

sweeping views of the sea is simply irresistible. Imagine if 

that salt-tinged panorama was not immediately apparent, 

but rather concealed by verdant foliage surrounding the 

home’s frontage. Such was the case with this Falmouth 

property, where the stunning seascape emerges as a 

tantalizing surprise, waiting to be discovered. 

The homeowners, who entrusted architect John Dvorsack 

and builder McPhee Associates with the creation of their 

dream home, had a clear vision: they wanted a residence 

that would place the ocean front and center, highlighting 

its natural grandeur. The lot, which was previously 

occupied by a 1950s contemporary home, was the ideal 

setting to realize this vision. While expanding the original 

structure was considered, restrictive zoning laws meant 

that the team had to start from scratch. The original house 

was demolished, and the lot was reconfigured to make 

way for Dvorsack’s awe-inspiring design. 

“This coastal home is an expression of the client’s 

lifestyle, and how they wanted to create memories with 

their family,” says Rob McPhee, president of McPhee 

Associates, of the breathtaking residence. And with a 

view like that, it’s easy to understand why. When the sea is 

the star of the show, it’s only natural that the homeowner 

wanted the interiors to complement the views. And that’s 

precisely what the homeowner had in mind when teaming 

up with residential design firm Chango & Co., in-house 

design consultants at McPhee, and interior designer 

Cynthia Brox, to conceptualize the interiors. With an eye 

toward family living, each member of the household has

areas provide ample opportunity to convene. Drawing 

inspiration from the chic comfortable interiors found 

in Nancy Meyers’ iconic films, the homeowner, in 

collaboration with the design team, set out to create a 

stylish and inviting living space. 

The homeowner describes “comfortable and welcoming” 

as the guiding principles for this coastal oasis, where every 

room is imbued with a sense of relaxed elegance. With 

a neutral palette accented by light oak wood, organic 

materials and pops of navy, there is a weather-washed feel 

that evokes a subdued nauticalism. Texture plays a role of 

its own, with furnishings and decor reminiscent of nautical 

rope, paired with shiplap paneled walls and grasscloth 

wallpaper accents. Two original works of Provincetown 

artist Anne Packard are displayed, and speak to a yearning 

to subtly integrate the ocean’s essence into the interiors. 

“The way that Anne Packard paints is not literal. It evokes 

a feeling,” says the homeowner. “I wanted to invite that 

sentiment into the home.” 

Dvorsack’s positioning of the home allows the ocean to 

speak for itself from the inside out, with abundant windows 

that encapsulate the views and serve as a reminder of the 

surrounding beauty. Flowing outdoor gathering spaces 

summon al fresco bliss, with an outdoor swimming pool

in a way that reflects a true Cape Cod house.” A testament
