GOOD THING
by Henry Michalowski
Good thing you’re not an octopus or tying shoes would take all day.
Good thing you’re not a skunk, or I couldn’t let you stay.
Good thing you’re not a woodpecker, or I couldn’t hear myself talk.
Good thing you’re not an ant or I’d have to watch where I walk.
Good thing you’re not a porcupine or I couldn’t hug you anymore.
Good thing you’re not a flower attracting honeybees.
Good thing you’re not a beaver or I’d have to plant more trees.
Good thing you’re not a duck or I’d have to fill the pool.
Good thing you’re not a fish or you’d have to live at school.
Good thing you’re not a moose or we’d have to tie up the swing seat.
Good thing you’re not a goose or I might step on your webbed feet.
Good thing you’re not a donkey, you might kick me with your hoof.
Good thing you’re not a giraffe or we’d have to raise the roof.
Good thing you’re not a snowstorm or I’d have to wear some mittens.
Good thing you’re not a mommy cat or I’d have to play with all your kittens.
Good thing you are not a sailor sailing out to sea.
Best of all, I’m glad you are you, and I’m glad that I am me.

SUMMER 2023:
Are You Ready for Scouting BSA
Summer Adventures for the WHOLE Family!
Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is not just for boys
and young men anymore! In 2017 BSA recognized
that families are looking for a place they can bring
their whole family to have fun and adventures in the
outdoors. So, BSA policies now reflect this clear
demand signal, taken from surveying thousands of
Scouting families, that clearly showed that parents of
boys in Scouting wanted “one stop shopping for all
their children” and highlighted their appreciation for the challenging and exciting
Scouting programs that BSA offers all youth.
So, are you ready to begin your family’s Scouting adventures?
Check out all the Summer Camp activities for Scouts of all ages in

to do anywhere else? To join BSA, please go

BSA programs for families with older Youths, ages 14 – 20, including becoming Venturers,
Explorers or Sea Scouts. Scout Me In!
Aquia District, a part of the National Capital Area

Corps Base Quantico, boasts an extremely active
Scouting program for the WHOLE family! Come join

The Oberle Academy Offers a Superior Learning Environment
and Education for Students with Disabilities
By: Linda Sealy, Director of Development
Located at 404 Willis Street in Fredericksburg, The
Oberle Academy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit school for
students ages 9-22. School systems from the
Fredericksburg area refer students to our school when
their needs cannot be met in the public setting.
Licensed by the Virginia Department of Education, The
Oberle Academy serves students with unique learning
needs. Students identified as having emotional,
intellectual, learning, or multiple disabilities, as well as
autism spectrum disorders, other health impairments,
and visual and hearing impairments, attend The Oberle
Academy.
OUR MISSION is to provide youth with the
education and skills needed to become successfully
employed, self-sufficient, and contributing members of
their communities.
Our students are taught by teachers who are
continually "Nurturing Success." We define this phrase
as caring for and encouraging the development of the
growth and success of our students. Our teachers and
staff live this phrase daily.
The Oberle Academy offers a comprehensive
curriculum, including core content classes, appealing
electives, and various career and technical education
courses. Culinary arts, carpentry, building trades, multimedia,
web design, education for employment, and
drone technology are some of the most popular Career
and Technical Education courses. Our student-teacher
ratio averages 4:1. Students receive extensive support
where needs can be fully met and trusting relationships
with staff formed. Robust counseling and behavioral
support curricula complement our vital academic
programs. Students may meet with staff and counselors
whenever needed.
In our culinary arts program, students learn the
basics of cooking and baking and receive their ServSafe
certification through the National Restaurant
Association, a requirement for employment by many
food-related industries. Our culinary arts program gives
our students the "real-life" experience of working and
preparing food in a commercial kitchen. Students in this
program prepare meals for all students and staff daily.
They also deliver lunches to the students and staff by
cart, adding an appreciated personal touch while
learning the basics of customer service.
In our carpentry and building trades programs,
students must complete OSHA 10 safety training before
using the equipment.
Students attending high school independent living
courses and middle school computer concepts may earn
a Cyber Safety certification. This certification gives
students the education, awareness, and resources
necessary to be safer in the digital world. The program
covers cyberbullying, sexting, the consequences of
school threats, and several other pertinent, timely topics
that students face today.
26
Art and music are therapeutic elective options and
enhance students' interpersonal skills and critical
thinking while strengthening their academic skill sets.
Our students who participate in our education for
employment (EFE) program gain experience through
work-based learning opportunities at various businesses
in the Fredericksburg area. Research proves that workbased
learning helps students apply and extend
classroom learning, gain motivation and understanding,
and develop a critical understanding of the work
environment through first-hand experience. In EFE,
students receive essential training in the skills necessary
to prepare them for competitive employment. If you or
someone you know is interested in an EFE partnership,
please contact our school at 540-372-6710.
The management of The Oberle Academy
constantly looks for ways to help more students in the
Fredericksburg area. Presently, the management of The
Oberle Academy has plans to increase the course
offerings to students and increase the school's
capabilities. The changes encompass three areas:
1. Presently, members of our management team
are performing a study to determine if adding an
elementary school to our existing middle and high school
model is a viable expansion option. Having an
elementary school requires numerous grade-specific
upgrades to our educational programs and facilities.
2. Renovations are underway at our vocational
center to add cosmetology and barber programs.
Students completing the two-year program will qualify
to apply for the Commonwealth of Virginia's licensure
exam. Students passing our program and the licensure
exam can work for a salon, a barber shop, or be selfemployed.
3. For many years, Al Fagan, the President and
Chief Executive Officer of The Oberle Academy, has had
a vision of students raising food for the cafeteria or
plants and flowers for fundraising. Mr. Fagan intends to
erect a greenhouse on the school grounds this summer.
Initially a hoop house with plastic covering, he hopes to
have a state-of-the-art greenhouse within a few years.
Mr. Fagan wants our students to learn how things grow,
to take pride in their successes, and to get their hands
dirty. He envisions that for some students, exposure to
the greenhouse will lead to further education or jobs in
horticulture.
The management hopes to have the program
expansions completed by August 2023.
Please call 540-372-6710
to schedule a time to visit
our school and take a tour
to see the quality
environment and learning
opportunities we offer at
The Oberle Academy.

LINGERING HAZARDS
By Erik F. Nelson
The Civil War was an industrial conflict
that saw a staggering amount of ordnance
manufactured and used in battle. Artillery
projectiles ranged from solid cannonballs to
rounds with an explosive charge ignited by a
fuze. Fuzes can fail, though, and explosive
rounds did not always explode. They are still
dangerous.
Black powder is not a chemical
compound, but rather a mixture of three
ingredients. At the time of the Civil War, the proportions were 75 percent (by weight)
potassium nitrate (also called saltpetre), 10 percent sulphur, and 15 percent powdered
charcoal. Those components were ground together, while wet to prevent an explosion, then
forced through sieves of various sizes to create different sized grains. Coarser powder went
for artillery use. Finer grains went into small arms ammunition. The extra fine residue left
over from this process was called meal powder and used in fuzing mechanisms.
Black powder is sensitive to impact, friction, and sparks and therefore must be handled
with great care. Because it is not chemically bonded, it can retain its explosive strength in the
long term. The following examples from Fredericksburg illustrate the lingering threat.
Virginia Herald, April 29, 1872 – “Burst Up at Hunter & Frost’s Foundry”
Workers at a local foundry near Falmouth had figured out how to render live artillery
rounds safe and did considerable work of this type throughout the Fredericksburg
community. The inherent dangers never diminished.
38
About 4 o’clock on Saturday evening a loud explosion was heard, followed by a
considerable volume of smoke at the above works, creating for a few moments
quite a panic, the impression being that something very serious had happened.
It was caused by the explosion of an old shell that had been lying in the yard.
An apprentice named Charles Schubert was breaking old shells with a large
hammer, took up a twelve-pound loaded shell which he proceeded to break.
The concussion was so great as to ignite the powder remaining in it, causing
the explosion which followed.
The boy was badly burnt and cut all over the face and neck, and it is
feared his eyesight is injured. He was able to be led home, but unable to see for
the time being. The pieces of the shell struck the foundry buildings in all
directions, the great wonder being that no one was killed, as all the works of the
foundry, pouring off iron, etc. were in full operation. The boy was breaking up
shells without the knowledge or direction of his employers, that being the work
of a department in which he was not engaged.
Virginia Herald, October 25, 1875 – “Woolen Factory Costing $128,000 Destroyed by Fire”
A fire that broke out at the Washington Woolen Mills wrecked the facility,
consumed most of the stock, and cooked off an artillery round.
.
A shell that had lodged in the wall during the shelling of the town in 1862 by
Burnside’s Army exploded, one piece passing fearfully close to the head of one of
the parties assisting in saving property at the Factory
Winchester Evening Star, January 19, 1915 – “Civil War Shell Makes Big Noise”
Undiscovered ordnance made routine tasks dangerous.
Workmen while cleaning out an old house on the Bradley estate in Fredericksburg
a few days ago, piled the accumulated matter in a heap and set fire to it. In a short
time, there was a terrific explosion which shook a nearby building. Later it was
found that in the rubbish was an unexploded shell, a relic of the Civil War of fifty
years ago.
Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star, February 22, 1989 – “Civil War Shot Found
in Kenmore”
Kenmore is a colonial era mansion that belonged to Fielding Lewis and Betty
Washington Lewis (George Washington’s sister). A private foundation maintains it in an
excellent state of repair and workmen putting down insulation in the attic one day
discovered a cannonball in the floor carriage. A military bomb disposal team removed the
hazard, which was eventually demilitarized and returned for display at the museum.
Lodged in the house framing, but under roof for the previous 127 years, the round
remained in exceptionally good shape. When the demilitarizing team drilled into the shell
casing, to steam out the bursting charge, they were able to simply pour out the black
powder.
The most expedient way to eliminate an
explosive hazard is to blow it up, preferably
without having to move it. Old ordnance,
however, has historic interest for many and
rendering an item safe is the desired outcome.
There are tools and techniques to make
unexploded rounds safe, but they must be
applied with considerable care because
ordnance designed to kill still can. As recently as
2008, a man in central Virginia became a casualty
of the Civil War when a live round he was trying
to demilitarize exploded.
Erik Nelson was a planner with the City of Fredericksburg for 32 years and is now a consulting urbanologist.
He holds a graduate degree in history from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Hummingbirds – Where do you start? So cool! So tiny! So unique!
Certainly, one of the most beautiful birds in the world and truly
one of the most fascinating. What makes them so special?
Size for one...or the lack there-of. They really are the smallest of all birds, and yet,
with more than 330 species, they are the second largest family of birds in the world. A
fact made even more remarkable when considering that they are found nowhere else
on the planet except in the Americas. Not in Asia, not in Europe, not in Africa or
anywhere else except the Western Hemisphere!

"Beautiful atmosphere,
delicious light dessert... ”
About The Woolen Mill
The Woolen Mill is the gathering spot of
our many events throughout the year. In addition
to weddings and receptions, the Woolen Mill is
used for live music performances, military balls,
gala’s family reunions, holiday parties (beautiful
for company Christmas parties) dinner theater,
corporate and themed events, bridal and other
vendor shows along with many other
charity/fundraising events. Woolen Mill is a oneof-a-kind
unique venue that not only pays
homage to Fredericksburg’s historic Mill District
but also celebrates the special historic occasion
of a wedding day.
On May 10, 1860, the first water from the
Rappahannock River poured over the water
wheel of The Woolen Mill. The four-story brick
mill could produce up to 100,000 yards of
woolen goods per year. By 1884, it was one of
the city’s leading industries, employing 30 or
more people and producing about 120,000
pounds of wool per year. By 1909, a pants
factory was added to the Fredericksburg
complex which produced men’s wool and flannel
pants. In August 1910, a fire blazed through the
mill, sparing only the pants factory which
continued to operate for a number of years. The
Mill still stands today and is being preserved as
close to the originality of the original structure
as possible.
The Woolen Mill is located in Downtown
Fredericksburg- minutes from Interstate 95 and
Route 1. It is within walking distance to Historic
Landmarks, Antique Shops, Restaurants and
Cafés. The historic Woolen Mill has the
capability to host receptions and ceremonies for
up to 200 guests. The view of the Rappahannock
River can be enjoyed from the roof top terrace as
guests enjoy cocktail hour. The chapel and
reception space have been renovated to
embrace the industrial character of The Woolen
Mill with the original brick walls, industrial
windows, and a decorative focal point, the
antique freight pulley elevator.

Master Uncertainty, Live a Better Life
by John F. Gillespie, Jr.
Uncertainty is a fundamental aspect of life. No matter
how much we try to control our environment, there will
always be factors outside of our control that will create
uncertainty. It could be a sudden change in the weather, a
surprise job loss, or a global pandemic that disrupts your
plans and forces you to adapt to new circumstances.
However, uncertainty doesn't have to be all bad. In
fact, learning to manage uncertainty will actually lead to a
better life for the average person. By reducing anxiety and
increasing enjoyment, we can learn to embrace uncertainty
and make the most out of every situation.

Here are some concrete examples of how uncertainty can be managed to create a better life:
1. Set Realistic Goals
One of the main sources of uncertainty is a lack of clarity about what we want to achieve. Setting
realistic goals can help us reduce anxiety and create a sense of purpose. By breaking down larger goals
into smaller, more manageable steps, we can increase our chances of success and reduce the fear of
failure. For example, if your goal is to run a marathon, start by setting smaller goals such as putting your
running clothes on, running for a minute, running a 5k or a 10k, and gradually work your way up.
2. Embrace Change
Change is inevitable, and it can create a lot of uncertainty. However, by learning to embrace change,
we can become more adaptable and resilient. Instead of resisting change, try to focus on the
opportunities it presents. For example, if you lose your job, use it as an opportunity to explore new
career options or start your own business.
3. Practice Mindfulness and Breathing Techniques
Mindfulness is a powerful tool for managing uncertainty. By staying present in the moment and focusing
on your thoughts and feelings, you can reduce anxiety and increase your enjoyment of life. Mindfulness
practices such as meditation and deep breathing (check out Wim Hof’s breathing technique or similar
ones) can help you stay calm and centered in the face of uncertainty.
5. Build a Support Network
Having a strong support network can help you manage uncertainty by providing you with emotional
support and practical help when you need it. Reach out to friends, family, or colleagues when you're
feeling overwhelmed, and don't be afraid to ask for help. Similarly, be there for others when they need
support.
6. Plan for the Unexpected
While we can't predict everything that will happen in our lives, we can prepare for the unexpected.
Building an emergency fund, having backup plans in place, and keeping important documents organized
can help us feel more in control and reduce anxiety.
By taking these steps, you can learn to manage uncertainty and create a better life for yourself.
While it may not always be easy, embracing uncertainty can lead to new opportunities and experiences
that you may have otherwise missed out on. So, next time you're faced with uncertainty, try to see it
as a chance to learn, grow, and thrive.

WINERIES & BREWERIES
C
1781 BREWING CO.
Our Mission to create truly distinct farmhouse ales
and lagers on our Virginia farm, Reap what you Sow,
sustainability at 1781 Brewing Co, means leaving
little to no trace and replacing our carbon footprint
in meaningful ways. We are continually listed as a
Corporation for Conservation by Ducks Unlimited
and other nonprofits. In 2017, 1781 Brewing Co.
contributed to help conserve over 248,000 acres of
wetlands which are the most at-risk ecological
systems. We also are involved in several USDA
environmental programs for wetlands and forest
and maintain 60 acres of deciduous forest and
buffer zones for the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. All
1781 Brewing Co.'s spent grains and brewery refuse
goes to either compost for our vegetable garden or
to another local farmer, Todd Schlund for his Pork
production.
WILDERNESS RUN VINEYARDS
Wilderness Run Vineyards began as a twinkle-in-theeye
of Robert and Denise Pagan as they looked
across the farm they had raised their family upon.
With the help of their son Harry and lifelong friend
Brandon (and many others), they started reclaiming
what were once dairy pastures and began planting
long rows of vines. After seeing the fruits of their
labor and all of the natural beauty of the property,
they decided what they had built must be shared.
Wilderness Run Vineyards has continually set goals
for the growth of the vineyard and farm. Every year
they have planted an average of an acre of new
grapes. The addition of 1781 Brewing Co. on the
farm has added to a variety of new beverage
options for patrons. The combination of vineyard
and brewery located on their historic property has
allowed them to holdfast to ethos; making the most
out of time with family, serving patrons as they are
our family and giving back to the community.

THE HEALING POWER OF FORGIVENESS
By: Professional Life Coach and Counselor Marcia Grimsley, BA, MS
“Forgiveness is giving up all hope for a different past.”
(Colin Tippen Ph.D., Radical Forgivness)
Now is the perfect time for making personal changes that can shift you into a healthier life. The
forgiveness process is a force for healing interpersonal relationships and hurtful experiences. We
personally benefit, because forgiveness can heal us, and create less division in our life, and in our
community.
I would like to offer you some thoughts about forgiveness, both from my own history and from
some well-known authors writing on this subject. It is my hope that the ideas shared here, will help you
decide to move forward with this important inner work.
Forgiveness is usually two-sided: forgiving another and forgiving ourselves.
Sometimes people try to back themselves into the forgiveness process. Doing this may help us
feel better temporarily. However, many times we attempt to forgive others, before we first forgive
ourselves. This does not usually work very well. It can be very difficult to look at our own feelings of
guilt or regret within the forgiveness process. These disturbing feelings can be deep within us. One
example of this might be: Blaming our child’s school or teacher for his or her academic performance,
rather than acknowledging our own contributions to this situation.
Assuming the victim role can also be a part of the forgiveness dynamic. An example of this type
of unhealthy thinking could be: People are always cutting me off on the road or cheating me.
Neither of these mental perceptions will contribute to a happy life. They only add to our emotional
suffering.
Forgiving does not necessarily mean we are condoning another behavior.
When we forgive, we are not making the statement that “nothing hurtful or unfair happened to
me,” writes Rev. Marianne Williamson. This is essential to understand! We do not have to continue to
be part of any relationship that we feel is unhealthy or harmful. Forgiveness does not mean that any
specific action is necessarily required from us. It also does not mean that there was not a slight of some
type. Forgiveness begins in our heart and in our mind. Any action we choose to take, as a result of the
decision to forgive is a strictly separate activity.
Forgiveness can help to heal our physical and emotional body.
We can ask a hundred people, if we are on the right side of a conflict. We can ask a hundred people
to forgive us, when we make a mistake. Neither really matters! The healing work is an “inside job” for
each one of us. We are the ones feeling upset or attacked. It is up to us to choose our response. If we
attack back, we may often feel guilty and stressed later. We then feel that we have to justify our
actions, in order to feel better. This can require the exhaustive recounting of our hurtful experience for
days, months, or years. It is up to us to decide to, either carry our pain forward, or release ourselves
through forgiveness.
Medical science warns us that toxic thoughts and feelings can attack the body and mind. Over
time, continuing this attack on our body may result in stress-related illnesses. Let us be responsible for
our own thoughts and feelings, actions, and our own health and well-being.
The forgiveness process is not an easy one. It does require some self-confidence and self-esteem.
Be courageous! Choose forgiveness today! It is a healing choice for you and can help to heal your
world.
