It’s never too late to learn new skills - Just ask Don and Joanne
Don Murray chose to study at
Warrington & Vale Royal College
for a new challenge after retiring
in August 2021. After being in
the Navy for 9 years and then
working in the banking, telecom
and project management
industries, Don wanted to learn
something new.
Don has always had an interest
in woodwork and decided to take
the leap and enrol on to our Level
1 Carpentry & Joinery course.
He enjoyed this so much that he
progressed on to Level 2 Site
Carpentry. The best aspect of
studying here, Don says, is the
great facilities we have on site which
include a fully kitted-out workshop
complete with a wide range of tools
and equipment. Don loves the fact
that he is learning alongside others
of varying ages and they all get
along well.
Even though Don is retired, that
hasn’t stopped him from learning
something new. He has also
completed a couple of our art
courses as well as managing an
allotment. Don enjoys learning
new skills as well as the challenge
exams bring - exams in which he
has achieved distinctions! How
inspiring!
On the topic of his tutors, Ben
Whitfield, Roy Pierce and Dave
Cain, Don has nothing but positive
things to say.
“They have great expertise in their
subjects and provide guidance
whenever needed.”
In the future, Don hopes to use his
new-found skills around his home
and at his allotment.
“I highly recommend the college and
the course to others who are looking
to improve their carpentry skills.”
Joanne Hollyhead runs her own
successful cleaning business,
CRS Cleaning Consultants, and
decided to enrol on our Level 1
Carpentry & Joinery course to
expand the list of services she
can offer to clients.
Joanne was already fairly handy
when it came to DIY - often doing
tiling, painting and decorating
jobs for herself and her clients.
However, she wanted to perfect her
measuring skills, learn how to hang
a door and increase her confidence
in her abilities, all whilst gaining
a qualification to add to her belt.
Joanne likes the college’s location
and has benefitted from the
well-structured course and our
fabulous facilities.
In the future, Joanne hopes to
continue enhancing her DIY skills by
progressing to our level 2 course,
and adding Carpentry & Joinery
to her growing list of professional
services. Best of luck, Joanne!
Adult apprentices lead the way
We recently caught up with
some of our Level 3 Team Leader
apprentices whilst they were
on their study day at Winsford
campus.
It was great to hear about their
experiences so far and how they are
enjoying their work at RMG - one
of the largest and most respected
property management companies in
the country.
The Level 3 Team Leader
apprenticeship is great for those
who aspire to be a team leader,
covering the core knowledge,
skills and behaviours needed to
become the best in the industry.
Topics include project management,
finance, building relationships,
organisational performance and
personal effectiveness. All of the
students are enjoying their course
so far and have already learned
about the various styles of leading a
team and how to implement these in
a workplace.
The students agreed with their
employer, RMG, to do this
apprenticeship as a way to develop
their skills so they could eventually
progress within the company.
Our students stated that the best
aspect of studying at Warrington
& Vale Royal College is that it is
a great place to learn with all the
facilities needed in one place. They
immediately felt welcomed by our
staff when they joined the college,
and tell us that everyone they have
encountered has been friendly and
pleasant. The students also had
nothing but great things to say about
their tutor, Sarah Green, whom they
describe as being “very reassuring,
thorough and simply amazing”.
Warrington & Vale Royal College is
a top-performing further education
college for apprenticeships and it
is great to see big companies such
as RMG recognise that. We want
to wish our Level 3 Team Leader
apprentices the best of luck for the
future.
Generations of apprenticeship success
Warrington & Vale Royal College
recently installed electrical
barriers in its main reception area
- the first phase of a campus-wide
implementation.
The work was carried out by not
one but two of the college’s former
apprentices working for Lock-tec
(UK) Ltd - a company owned by
Warrington & Vale Royal College
apprentice alumni Glen Whalley.
The work was carried out by Sam
Whalley, Glen’s son, and Joe Lowe
- both bright sparks completing their
apprenticeships at Warrington &
Vale Royal College. Sam, who has
been an apprentice for one year,
studies in the college’s Advanced
Manufacturing & Engineering
Training (AMET) Centre one day
a week, where he benefits from
the specialist facilities. Here, Sam
develops his practical skills and
theoretical knowledge of electrical
installation including wiring,
installing cables and lighting circuits.
When asked what advice he would
give to anyone considering taking
the apprenticeship route, he said:
“Go for it! I am so much happier
doing an apprenticeship than I
would have been if I had gone down
a different route. At Lock-tec, I am
well supported and happy. The best
thing is that I am learning something
new every day.”
Joe worked at Lock-tec for four
years and began his career in a
similar fashion to Sam. Preferring
practical, career-orientated learning,
Joe knew early on that he wanted
to get straight into work and an
apprenticeship was the perfect
way to do this, whilst gaining a
nationally recognised qualification.
After successfully completing his
apprenticeship, Joe decided to
continue his studies at Warrington &
Vale Royal College and progressed
on to the HNC and HND Electrical
& Electronic Engineering course -
where he also achieved incredible
results.
In addition to Sam and Joe, Glen
Whalley - Managing Director
of Lock-tec, also studied for
several years at Warrington &
Vale Royal College (formerly
Warrington Collegiate). Glen says:
“I would highly recommend an
apprenticeship for any budding
engineer who wishes to develop
specialist skills and gain experience
within a trade whilst continuing
their studies. Working on the tools
with guidance and support of
experienced engineers develops
practical skills, technical knowledge
and encourages personal growth.”
Access
to Higher
Education
A wonderful celebration
Higher Education studen
Your key to university.
One-year course.
Pay nothing back. *
Every academic year, Warrington
& Vale Royal College hosts
its annual Higher Education
Graduation Ceremony - a
charming celebration of student
success set in remarkable
surroundings. Students and their
guests gathered in St Elphin’s
Church, a location as beautiful as
it is historic, ready to celebrate
their achievements.
As students arrived at the church,
they were transformed into gleaming
graduands ready to walk the stage
and claim their achievements. The
ceremony was attended by a host
of VIPs and friends of the college,
including the Mayor of Warrington,
Cllr Jean Flaherty, and special
guest speaker Claire Lomas MBE.
The college was also honoured
to appoint its newest fellow,
Steve Park, Director of Growth at
Warrington Local Authority.
All in attendance were deeply
moved and inspired by the
wonderful speech delivered by
Claire Lomas MBE who spoke
about the tragic accident that
left her paralysed and how she
overcame this. Claire talked about
how her previous life as an active
sportswoman completely changed
overnight and how she dug deep
to find the strength to restart
and rebuild. Claire’s speech was
captivating and thought-provoking;
a true inspiration to everyone in
the room.
The college was once again pleased
to present a number of esteemed
students with special awards. These
select awards recognise the hard
work and dedication of students
who truly embody the college’s core
ethos. Congratulations to Sarah
Boniface, The Hilary Tucker Art
Meet our student, Nicole Mcgahey
Nicole Mcgahey, who is currently studying Access to
HE - Health Professionals at Warrington campus, has
secured a place at the University of Chester to study
Adult Nursing.
Nicole’s job as a carer made her passionate about
College student is a
sporting superstar
Joe Bullock, current Warrington &
Vale Royal College student, has a
hugely successful sporting career
as a professional rugby league
player. Joe, who has completed
his HNC and HND Sport &
Exercise Science qualifications
at the college, is now enrolled
on our Level 3 Personal Training
course as he wanted to learn
what it takes to be a personal
trainer and deliver sessions.
Although Joe is currently a trailblazer
in the sport industry, he has his
sights set on his future career
options. Keen to stay in the sporting
sector, Joe is interested in building
up his knowledge of personal
training. On his time at the college,
Joe said: “The best aspect has been
the flexible learning and high-quality
teaching from friendly tutors.”
Curriculum Manager for Higher
Education at the college,
Joe Hatwell, said: “Joe is a fantastic
student and scholar to have
here at Warrington & Vale Royal
College. His academic success
alongside being an elite athlete
is a testament to Joe’s work ethic
and drive to be successful in all
that he does. During his time on
the course, Joe has developed a
range of higher education skills and
qualities outside of rugby that now
places him in a fantastic position to
pursue his career goals after rugby.
Congratulations Joe!”
Joe recently donated a signed
shirt to our Sport, Military &
Emergency Services Academy,
so keep an eye out for it when
passing through! Warrington & Vale
Royal College is incredibly grateful
for Joe’s kind donation, and wish
him every success in his already
outstanding career.
Alumni and Midwife Team Leader Jonathan Cliffe
shares his journey to success
We recently caught up with
former college student Jonathan
Cliffe, who studied Level 3 Health
& Social Care at the college
before progressing on to study
midwifery at Bangor University.
Jonathan is now working as
a Midwife Team Leader at
Warrington and Halton Teaching
Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Jonathan joined Warrington &
Vale Royal College two years
after leaving high school. Due to
life events and circumstances,
Jonathan left school with no GCSEs
and took a couple of years out
of education to gain valuable life
lessons that prepared him to enter
adult life. The former Beamont
Collegiate Academy pupil chose
to study Level 3 Health & Social
Care at the college with hopes of
becoming a paramedic, however,
this soon changed and Jonathan
decided he wanted to pursue a
career in midwifery.
For anyone considering a career in
the health and social care sector,
Jonathan highly recommends
Warrington & Vale Royal College.
Upon completion of his course,
Jonathan progressed on to Bangor
University to study midwifery and
graduated with a first-class honour’s
degree in 2015. Jonathan said: “It
was at Bangor where I truly learnt
what midwifery is. I was taught by
an amazing group of midwives, all of
whom shaped me into the midwife
I am today. The blended learning
of theory and practical course
elements at Bangor prepared me to
qualify as a confident midwife ready
to embark in a career in the NHS.”
After graduating, Jonathan became
a qualified midwife and quickly
secured a job in his hometown of
Warrington. His further education
didn’t stop there, in 2019 Jonathan
completed postgraduate study in
maternal and reproductive health.
Since qualifying as a midwife in
2015, Jonathan has been working
at Warrington and Halton Teaching
Hospitals NHS Foundation
Trust where he has gained new
experiences, knowledge and
skills. Jonathan says no two days
are the same and therefore he
is always learning. In his current
role as a senior midwife, Jonathan
leads a team who provide care for
pregnant women with additional
vulnerabilities.
Jonathan’s work in midwifery
transcends his local work.
Nationally, he is an editorial board
member for midwifery journals,
an ambassador for a charity that
supports women with cancer in
pregnancy, and gives his time to
represent and promote a career in
midwifery to students at schools
and colleges across the country.
Jonathan is very happy and content
working as a midwife, and when
asked about his future he said: “I
hear all the time about five-year
plans, people asking what is next. If
I have learnt anything following the
global pandemic, it is to be thankful
for the present.”
When asked if he had any tips for
our current students looking to
become successful in the health
and social care sector, Jonathan
said: “Believe what you can achieve,
find your passion, and remember
sometimes things don’t always go
to plan. Determination to reach
a goal is the driving force behind
success. Truly listen to those around
you - every individual you meet can
provide you with a lesson, you just
have to be ready to learn.”
Everyone at Warrington & Vale
Royal College is incredibly proud of
Jonathan for achieving his career
goals and more. If Jonathan’s story
has inspired you to change your
career path or upskill within your
current role, our Higher Education
and Access to Higher Education
courses are the perfect place
to begin!
Barbering student opens
his own barber shop in
Newton-le-Willows
Former dance student turned
tutor Shannen Stocks is crowned
European Vice Champion!
Meet Jamie Baines. Jamie is
studying Level 2 Barbering at the
college to refresh his barbering
skills before opening his own
shop.
Jamie was in the army for seven
years before rediscovering his
original passion for barbering.
He chose to study the course at
Warrington & Vale Royal College
as it was local to him and the
course fits perfectly around all of his
commitments. He says that his tutor
is brilliant, very knowledgeable and
is always giving useful advice.
Jamie is looking forward to his new
venture, something the course
content and college facilities have
thoroughly prepared him for. Jamie
also plans to progress on to our
Level 3 Barbering course to further
develop his skills. We want to wish
Jamie the best of luck, we can’t wait
to hear all about it!
At the college, we celebrate the
success of both our students and
our tutors. Earlier this month,
our dance tutor Shannen Stocks
took to the European stage
for the World Dance Council’s
Amateur League where she has
been crowned the WDC’s Vice
Champion!
This is the latest success in a string
of local and national achievements
for Shannen and her dance partner.
Just a few months ago, Shannen
was awarded the title of the ITDA’s
Medallist of the Year, having been
undefeated twice in four dances.
Between January and April this
year, this dynamic dance duo has
been placed either 1st or 2nd a
whopping eight times, in a variety
of championships and university
competitions nationwide.
Shannen has always been an avid
dancer, beginning her journey as
a student at our college back in
2016, only now to be tutoring in
the college’s brand-new Advanced
Creative & Digital Skills Centre
(ACDS). Bringing a wealth of
knowledge and skills to the
classroom, Shannen truly embodies
the college’s commitment to
providing its students with expert
tutors who are experienced in their
industry.
A big well done to Shannen! The
college is very proud of you.
College artists showcase their work
in two enchanting exhibitions
The Royal Standard Gallery
Five HNC Visual Arts students,
who study their craft at the
college’s Warrington campus,
were recently invited to display
their work at The Royal
Standard Gallery in Liverpool,
in collaboration with TATE.
The exhibition, titled ‘5 2 Midnight’,
explored the climate crisis and
challenged the artists with creating
a piece that captured attention and
provoked discussion.
The exhibition was launched with
an exclusive private view; an
event that was a huge success
and true testimony to the students’
talent and dedication to their art.
Congratulations to Vicki Cottrell,
Linda Davey, Aleksandra Jakimow,
Tina Moffatt and Frances Veltkamp
who made their mark and a lasting
impression on all those who
experienced the exhibition. Mia
Cathcart, Lecturer in Art & Design
at the college, said: “The end
result was cohesive and thoughtprovoking.
It was great to see the
students’ hard work pay off!”
Arley Hall & Gardens
Artistic talent runs through the
college’s Winsford campus too
- with twelve Level 3 Ceramics
students taking their creations
to Arley Hall & Gardens for their
exciting end-of-year exhibition
titled ‘Dazed and Glazed’.
The decorative display featured
several ceramic creations, including
personal sculptures designed to
reflect the individuality of the creator.
Congratulations to Aiva Musperte,
Anne Jones, Babirye Gregory,
David North, Jacob Chisnall, Jean
Wilson, Kerry Mellor, Lois Johnson,
Maxine Callow, Nicola Harrison,
Nicky Billington and Trish Litchfield
for curating such an enchanting
exhibition that showcased the
skills and knowledge developed
throughout the course.
Huw Phillips, Lecturer in Ceramics
at the college, tells us: “Many of
these students started studying with
us at level 1 and have progressed
on to level 3. They aim to continue
to build their skills and interest in
ceramics, ultimately setting up group
or individual studios in the future.”
Investing in our campuses
Warrington & Vale Royal College
recently announced the opening of
its brand-new Advanced Creative
& Digital Skills (ACDS Centre) – a
technological hub created with
a £2million investment from the
Department for Education.
A number of esteemed guests,
employer partners and friends of the
college joined in a celebration of the
ACDS Centre’s success so far and
the amazing things still yet to come,
as the doors to the centre were
officially opened.
The exclusive launch event began
with a networking session in the
college’s award-winning Buckley’s
Restaurant, where guests were
welcomed with canapés and
refreshments served by a team of
very talented hospitality and catering
students.
Guests were then escorted to the
Theatre for a presentation, only to
be surprised with a flash-mob
performance by some of the
college’s talented performing arts
students, who delivered a marvellous
rendition of Feeling Good.
Warrington & Vale Royal College
is delighted with the success of the
launch and extends huge thanks to
those who attended and who have
supported the ACDS Centre since
its inception.
Launched in October 2022, the
Health & Social Care Academy
continues to put retraining and
upskilling at the centre of its
curriculum, working with local
employers to help close the skills
gaps within the health and social
care sector.
Work-based Learning
Understanding that flexibility is
important, the Health & Social Care
Academy offers two work-based
learning courses - Level 2 and Level
3 Diploma Adult Care, combining
online learning with workplace
assessment, meaning time within
the workplace isn’t sacrificed.
The Health & Social Care Academy
also offers a Level 2 Award
Preparation to Work in Adult Social
Care which is taught entirely online,
meaning employees can study at a
time that suits them. This distance
learning course is perfect for those
who have recently entered, or are
looking to enter, the adult social
care sector.
Skills Bootcamp: Care Worker
With funding from the Cheshire
& Warrington Local Enterprise
Partnership (LEP), the Health &
Social Care Academy launched
Warrington’s first-ever Skills
Bootcamp in care work. The twoday-a-week
course, taken over
seven weeks, is designed with
employers and sector practitioners
to build up sector-specific skills.
What’s more, students who
successfully complete the
programme will be guaranteed an
interview for a vacant post with one
of the following local care providers:
Bright Futures, SOS Care, and
Home Instead.
