A Note From Our Board ChairI joined the board of the Institute for Agriculture andTrade Policy because IATP is the only organization thathas its feet firmly planted in the reality of Midwestfarms and food and, simultaneously, understandsand addresses the global realities of food and farmpolicies and practices.This means that IATP not only scans the horizon,tracking geopolitical and environmental issues, butalso interprets and confronts these challenges forlocal people and international negotiators.In the past year, IATP has changed how the worldthinks about livestock greenhouse gas emissions, thedangers of agribusiness concentration and the urgentneed to restructure the global food system. A Note From Our Executive DirectorDear Friends and Supporters of IATP,2022 was a tumultuous year for food security. Russiainvaded Ukraine in February, disrupting global wheat,sunflower oil and fertilizer markets, and sharplyincreasing the number of people facing hunger andfood insecurity. Low-income countries yet againfound themselves crippled with impossibly highdebts as they struggled to recover from the globalpandemic and continued to be buffeted by climatechange. Industrialized countries at last took someresponsibility for the precarity of conditions in manypoorer countries with the creation of a loss and damagefund under the auspices of the United Nations climatetreaty (UNFCCC). The U.N. Secretary General called outthe private sector for empty net-zero plans as profitssoared in the food and fertilizer sectors. Companiesflexed their market power and cashed in on thevolatility endemic across global supply chains, whilehousehold energy and grocery bills drove inflationhigher everywhere.Yet for all the tumult, 2022 also gave us hope. As thecrises mount, so does a willingness to experimentand make changes. We saw positive change on thecorporate accountability agenda, on public fundingfor conservation on agricultural land, and on directingpublic procurement for Minnesota’s kids towardsshorter food value chains and inclusive, culturallydiverse food systems. We saw momentum build forthe food systems transformation of agroecology.We published the first methane emissionsestimates for some of the world’s largest meatand dairy corporations, highlighting the scale oftheir responsibility for the climate crisis and theurgent need for both mitigation and adaptation inindustrial food systems. We provided concise, factualsupport to United States trade partners in the face ofbullying behavior by the U.S. government on behalfof agricultural firms seeking to overturn science andconsumer preferences in favor of higher market share.It was a good year for IATP, too. Responding to ourreincarnation as a smaller and partially remoteorganization, we sold our beautiful but dilapidatedmansion house and moved to premises inside thebuilding run by East Side Neighborhood Services,a local community service organization that hasoperated in Minneapolis for over 100 years. With muchjoy, we held our first in-person board meeting sincethe pandemic and our first public event in over fiveyears. We continued to invest in our communicationswork, updating our website and publishing new pages,including one on agroecology. We experimented againwith a podcast and created a video to introduce IATP tonew audiences.There is no shortage of work to be done! Resolution ofthe climate crisis demands strong policies to tackleinequities and protect political organizing, as well as togovern land use and to force big and quick reductions inmethane emissions. Better protection for biodiversityis critical to making headway on all the interlinkedcrises, including climate change and food insecurity.Food and agricultural systems are at the heart of thetransition we need, and that is where you will find us:protecting the "floor" — the universal human rights tofood, water and a safe environment — and a sustainable"ceiling" on our use of the planet’s bounty.Sophia Murphy, Ph.D.Executive Director3 | Institute for Agriculture & Trade Policy | 2022 Annual Report
