“At Old Members’ events, I was touched by the sincere interest
he took in our lives after Oxford. He was delighted to observe
lasting friendships forged at Queen’s, particularly (but not limited
to) Mathematicians. We feel a special bond through the privilege of
being taught and guided by him.”
Elizabeth Pilkington (Mathematics, 2000)
In December 2020, the College was saddened to learn of the death of
Dr Peter Neumann OBE (Mathematics, 1959), Emeritus Fellow of Queen’s.
Peter’s impact on generations of Queen’s students as Fellow in Mathematics
(1966-2008), Dean of Degrees (1968-73), Tutor for Admissions (1980-
86), and Senior Tutor (1990-95 and 2004-08) is immense, and will not be
forgotten. An exceptionally distinguished scholar and researcher in both
Mathematics and the History of Mathematics, he was also passionate about
teaching and Mathematics education outreach. Peter will be remembered for
inspiring students to achieve their full potential both in Mathematics and in
life, with encouragement always generously given – in green pen.
MATHEMATICS AT QUEEN’S TODAY
Queen’s currently has 28 Mathematics & Joint Subject
undergraduates, with 9 in the final year of their MMath,
and 22 Mathematics postgraduates.
The College normally admits 7-8 undergraduate
students each year for Mathematics.
Thanks to the broad range of interests of the Tutorial
Fellows, most of the first- and second-year material
is able to be taught by Fellows and Lecturers within
the College.
“At Queen’s, Mathematics retains its position as
a core scientific discipline. The dedicated team
of Mathematicians at the College, including the
Fellow in Pure Mathematics, the Fellow in Applied
Mathematics, and the Clifford Norton Senior
Research Fellow in the History of Mathematics,
diligently impart knowledge in both Applied and
Pure Mathematics.
Complementing this team are the tutorial lecturers
from the Mathematical Institute and The Big Data
Institute at the University of Oxford.”
Professor José A. Carrillo,
Fellow in Applied
Mathematics
“Undergraduate and graduate students at
Queen’s are exposed to a vibrant culture
of top-tier Mathematics education.”
SUPPORTING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
Retaining key teaching posts is one of the College’s ongoing priorities, and
this entails considerable costs which the College must meet each year.
Permanently endowed Tutorial Fellowships provide security for the future of
the tutorial system which lies at the heart of the academic excellence and
overall student experience at Queen’s.
The power of regular giving
We hope many more of our Mathematics Old Members will join those
already supporting the Peter Neumann Fellowship Fund, by making a
regular (recurring) gift to this special appeal. Regular giving is at the core
of the tradition of giving back that connects current students with Queen’s
Old Members of every generation. Regular gifts really add up! Every gift
makes a difference – we can do this together.
“Learning Mathematics gives one the foundation and the rigour to
scrutinise the world in which we live. The Oxford tutorial system
is a unique experience – Queen’s is no exception and, for me, the
tutorials in College have definitely been the most engaging and
helpful. Queen’s offers a lot of contact hours, whether through
tutorials, revision classes, or meetings with your moral tutor.”
WE NEED YOUR HELP
Queen’s has a long teaching tradition in Mathematics. There are currently
two full-time Mathematics Fellows, neither of which are endowed. The
College’s Governing Body has therefore created the Peter Neumann
Fellowship in Mathematics, an endowed Fellowship, to ensure his
contributions and memory live on through future generations of Queen’s
Mathematics students and Fellows.
The Peter Neumann Fellowship Fund
The cost to the College to endow this post is £2 million.
Over £500,000 has been raised in cash and pledges
to date, following the formal launch of this appeal at the
Subject Dinner for Mathematicians in June 2022.
