ADVANTAGE?<br />

The <strong>Bearc<strong>at</strong></strong> <strong>Advantage</strong> is a historic scholarship exclusively available to B<strong>at</strong>tle <strong>Creek</strong> <strong>Public</strong><br />

<strong>Schools</strong> (BCPS) gradu<strong>at</strong>es th<strong>at</strong> will set students up to continue on <strong>the</strong> p<strong>at</strong>h to career, college,<br />

and community success! It was established with <strong>the</strong> support of <strong>the</strong> W.K. Kellogg Found<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

(WKKF). WKKF is a longtime partner to BCPS and has supported us throughout our district<br />

transform<strong>at</strong>ion following <strong>the</strong>ir historic grant in 2017.<br />

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW!<br />

• Covers up to 100% of tuition and mand<strong>at</strong>ory fees <strong>at</strong> four-year universities or colleges<br />

in Michigan or one of nearly 100 eligible Historically Black Colleges or Universities<br />

(HBCUs) across <strong>the</strong> U.S.<br />

• The longer you’ve been <strong>at</strong> BCPS, <strong>the</strong> bigger <strong>the</strong> scholarship you receive! A student’s<br />

benefit percentage of tuition and mand<strong>at</strong>ory fees covered by <strong>Bearc<strong>at</strong></strong> <strong>Advantage</strong> can<br />

be determined using a sliding scale based on <strong>the</strong> number of years <strong>the</strong>y’ve been enrolled<br />

in BCPS.<br />

• Students have up to 6 years after gradu<strong>at</strong>ion to utilize <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>Bearc<strong>at</strong></strong> <strong>Advantage</strong><br />

scholarship funds.<br />

• Pays up to <strong>the</strong> student’s maximum award for each year of educ<strong>at</strong>ion until ANY ONE of<br />

<strong>the</strong> following is achieved:<br />

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?<br />

Students who gradu<strong>at</strong>e from ei<strong>the</strong>r B<strong>at</strong>tle <strong>Creek</strong> Central High School or W.K. Kellogg Prepar<strong>at</strong>ory High<br />

School and who have been a BCPS student for <strong>at</strong> least <strong>the</strong>ir entire high school career from September 1st<br />

of 9th grade are eligible for <strong>the</strong> scholarship. Award amounts are based on <strong>the</strong> length of time a student<br />

has been continuously enrolled in one of <strong>the</strong> BCPS schools listed below.<br />

Time enrolled in o<strong>the</strong>r public, priv<strong>at</strong>e, or charter schools not listed below does not qualify for <strong>the</strong><br />

continuous BCPS enrollment requirement. Students who re-enroll in BCPS after <strong>at</strong>tending o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

schools or districts would be eligible for <strong>the</strong> percentage th<strong>at</strong> corresponds with <strong>the</strong> first full year of<br />

BCPS enrollment after returning.<br />

ASKED QUESTIONS<br />

Do I have to live in <strong>the</strong> B<strong>at</strong>tle <strong>Creek</strong> area to receive <strong>the</strong> scholarship?<br />

• Residency is not a requirement as long as you are enrolled <strong>at</strong> a BCPS school, have been a BCPS<br />

student since <strong>at</strong> least September 1st of 9th grade, and will be continuously enrolled <strong>at</strong> BCPS<br />

through gradu<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

Wh<strong>at</strong> exactly does <strong>the</strong> <strong>Bearc<strong>at</strong></strong> <strong>Advantage</strong> pay for?<br />

• The <strong>Bearc<strong>at</strong></strong> <strong>Advantage</strong> can only be applied toward tuition and mand<strong>at</strong>ory fees. Room and board,<br />

textbooks, transport<strong>at</strong>ion, and o<strong>the</strong>r costs are not covered by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Bearc<strong>at</strong></strong> <strong>Advantage</strong>.<br />

Are <strong>the</strong>re requirements th<strong>at</strong> must be met to maintain eligibility throughout college or<br />

university?<br />

• Students must be making regular progress toward a four-year degree as defined by S<strong>at</strong>isfactory<br />

Academic Standards of <strong>the</strong> school, maintain a 2.0 GPA <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> post-secondary institution, and maintain<br />

a full-time student st<strong>at</strong>us, which is typically 12 credit hours or more per semester.<br />

Does <strong>the</strong> scholarship have to be used immedi<strong>at</strong>ely following gradu<strong>at</strong>ion?<br />

• No. Scholarship funds are available to use for six years after high school gradu<strong>at</strong>ion. Students applying<br />

for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Bearc<strong>at</strong></strong> <strong>Advantage</strong> after <strong>the</strong>ir senior year of high school should initi<strong>at</strong>e <strong>the</strong> applic<strong>at</strong>ion process<br />

by emailing bearc<strong>at</strong>advantage@b<strong>at</strong>tlecreekpublicschools.org <strong>at</strong> least one full semester prior to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

desired enrollment d<strong>at</strong>e.<br />

Wh<strong>at</strong> if I don’t qualify for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Bearc<strong>at</strong></strong> <strong>Advantage</strong>?<br />

• There are several funding opportunities available to BCPS gradu<strong>at</strong>es which you may be eligible<br />

for, such as Legacy Scholars, SEED Awards, and many o<strong>the</strong>r scholarships through <strong>the</strong> BCPS<br />

Educ<strong>at</strong>ion Found<strong>at</strong>ion and B<strong>at</strong>tle <strong>Creek</strong> Community Found<strong>at</strong>ion. For a list of o<strong>the</strong>r scholarships,<br />

Is <strong>the</strong>re an appeal process?<br />

• Appeals are available only for exceptional circumstances. All appeals must start by contacting<br />

bearc<strong>at</strong>advantage@b<strong>at</strong>tlecreekpublicschools.org.<br />

LEGACY SCHOLARS +<br />

THE BEARCAT ADVANTAGE<br />

There is no single p<strong>at</strong>h to success, and we’re committed to providing opportunities to help ensure th<strong>at</strong> every<br />

student can succeed in <strong>the</strong>ir careers, college, and <strong>the</strong> B<strong>at</strong>tle <strong>Creek</strong> community — no m<strong>at</strong>ter where <strong>the</strong>ir p<strong>at</strong>h<br />

takes <strong>the</strong>m. Toge<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Bearc<strong>at</strong></strong> <strong>Advantage</strong> and Legacy Scholars programs provide a full range<br />

of post-secondary opportunities for students. All BCPS seniors are encouraged to apply for both <strong>the</strong><br />

Legacy Scholars and <strong>Bearc<strong>at</strong></strong> <strong>Advantage</strong> scholarship programs and <strong>the</strong>n pursue <strong>the</strong> p<strong>at</strong>h th<strong>at</strong> best aligns<br />

with <strong>the</strong>ir career and personal goals.<br />

While <strong>the</strong> <strong>Bearc<strong>at</strong></strong> <strong>Advantage</strong> opens up opportunities for students to <strong>at</strong>tend four-year degree programs within<br />

Michigan or one of nearly 100 HBCUs across <strong>the</strong> country, <strong>the</strong> Legacy Scholars program offers options through<br />

Kellogg Community College and its Regional Manufacturing Technology Center(RMTC) program:<br />

• Transfer Degree Programs<br />

• Skilled Trades Programs<br />

Legacy also allows students to pursue trade school and apprenticeship programs outside of KCC’s RMTC.<br />

post-secondary educ<strong>at</strong>ion, both programs can be accessed for eligible gradu<strong>at</strong>es.
