PARTICIPANTS

The Worlddidac Foundation was established by

a group of enthusiasts who recognised that an

excellent educational product is equally

as crucial for a sound education as a

passionate teacher is. The idea to celebrate

and reward the most outstanding contributors

and to further incentivise manufacturers to

continuously strive to develop and create

innovative, high-quality equipment and

solutions was the foresight the foundation

members had when they launched the

Worlddidac Award. Since its inception in

1984, educational products submitted are

subject to an in-depth examination and

stringent assessment by a jury of international

experts and Swiss teachers. As the patron

of this biannual event, the Worlddidac Award

Foundation aims to motivate manufacturers of

educational products to develop high-quality,

innovative equipment and solutions, thereby

improving learning and teaching.

ULLA AUS DEM EULENWALD

The charmingly illustrated Ulla aus dem Eulenwald picture book series introduces children from

ages three to eight to the world of modern media. The books depict the adventures of Anna,

Peter and Ulla the Owl and, following Lehrplan 21, inspire children to ask questions about

modern media and think about its content. The picture books thus provide children

with entertaining and age-appropriate access to the world of today’s media. Topics such as

overstimulation or dealing with advertising are addressed in a playful manner.

7

SCHAUPLATZ ETHIK

Schauplatz Ethik is a new, competency-based teaching resource for guiding lessons

in the field of ethics. With four volumes for school years 1 to 9, each one building on

the content of the last, it covers the competency areas of ‘basic human experience’,

‘philosophy’, ‘values and norms’ and ‘forming ethical judgements’.

The new teaching resource for the first to third cycle encourages philosophical thinking and

ethical decision-making. It takes as its starting point the question: ‘What is a good life, and

how can we lead one?’ The aim is for pupils to learn to reflect on experiences, values, and

norms. They should become more aware of their personal values, examine these in relation to

other people’s and discuss their differences respectfully. In the course of this, they encounter

basic concepts such as equity, freedom, solidarity, responsibility and human dignity. They learn

to apply philosophical lenses to a range of topics and expand their horizons.

The teaching resource is not primarily concerned with communicating values, but rather

developing an awareness of the value systems that are reflected in contentious issues or

problematic situations.

8

SCHWEIZER ZAHLENBUCH

Based on the concept of active and explorative learning, the practical experience of hundreds

of teachers was drawn on to further develop Schweizer Zahlenbuch. This textbook focusses on

the basic ideas of arithmetic, geometry and how to deal with word problems. These ideas are

developed in primary school as part of the spiral learning progression and are systematically

enhanced, repeated and extended. Working on mathematical topics in larger thematic blocks

guarantees in-depth treatment while avoiding excessive changes.

Lessons can be prepared efficiently thanks to a handy summary in A3 format, the “teaching

cockpit”, which includes tips on proven implementation in the school routine as well as practical

comments for each learning environment (chapter).

While children who are good learners can work on a large number of challenging tasks for

higher demands, the Ortho-pedagogical Commentary offers tried-and-tested support in

promoting children with various learning difficulties.

Some 1000 exercises in „flash calculating“ per volume are available to pupils so that they can

enhance their capabilities at school or at home.

Further tasks, copy sheets, learning goal checks and solutions can be found both online and

offline. The digital materials can be accessed and used by teachers as well as pupils at school,

on the go and at home, at any time.

NATECH 7-9

NaTech 7–9 is a teaching resource for use in lower secondary level science lessons for years 7

to 9 in Switzerland. It covers all science competencies required in the Lehrplan 21.

NaTech 7–9 is designed as an interdisciplinary resource that also looks in detail at specific

disciplines such as physics, chemistry, and biology. As a result, it includes both integrated

and subject-specific chapters. Particular attention has been paid to ensuring that pupils

learn scientific methods and techniques alongside the scientific concepts. Therefore, with

NaTech 7–9 it is possible to gradually establish competencies – including interdisciplinary

competencies – in a spiral learning approach to science from kindergarten (Kinder begegnen

Natur und Technik) through primary level (NaTech 1–6) to the end of lower secondary level

(Natech 7–9).

NaTech 7–9 is based on a social-constructivist view of teaching and learning. This means that

pupils have the opportunity to build on what they have learned so far, follow their own learning

path and, where necessary, receive individual support. The resource also offers different

approaches to acquiring new competencies based on different social formats for learning

activities.

11

CONNECTED 1 | 2

THE WINNER OF SWISSCOM INNOVATION

AWARD 2020

approach. With four editions for years 5 through 9, each one building on the content of the

last, it develops all the competencies set out by Lehrplan 21. connected takes pupils’ everyday

experiences with media and digital devices as a basis. Its didactic approach is based on the

Dagstuhl triangle model: it takes different objects, phenomena, and situations from our digital

age into consideration and analyses them from different perspectives. As a result, the three

pillars of Lehrplan 21 are interwoven and tackled simultaneously.

connected was deliberately designed not to be a fully digital resource. On the one hand, this

accommodates the varying levels of IT infrastructure available in schools. On the other, it

reflects several basic conceptional considerations.

12

DIS DONC! 7-9

PRISMA digiOne

digiOne is our first digital all-round textbook. It leaves the notion of turning pages behind and is

based on the concept of a responsive design website for intuitive use. For digiOne, we take close

account of the day-to-day situation in the classroom and especially of the teaching principles

at the respective school level. It is critical to be aware of the level for which a digital textbook

is being developed. The routine and teaching at primary and secondary school is very different

from teaching at vocational school or even at university. Social competencies in the classroom,

particularly interpersonal communication, explorative learning and the didactic guidelines remain

paramount. Technical features support real-life teaching rather than replacing it.

Functions: digiOne gives teachers and their classes a single point of access to all parts of the

textbook, anywhere and regardless of the device used, making teaching more efficient. digiOne

enables teachers to have more time for the individual promotion of their pupils. digiOne offers

teachers as well as pupils new ways of structuring lessons while catering to their digital affinity.

digiOne comes in two versions: one for teachers and one for learners. Pupils can use a dashboard,

work on the subject matter and the tasks online, and create notes which they can publish within

the class or a learning or project group. Navigation is based on travel points that show what has

already been studied. The version for teachers combines the schoolbook and the accompanying

book. A dashboard for the teacher serves as a control centre. Here, the class and learning or

project groups can be set up. This allows teachers to be kept informed about the progress

made, the subject matter currently worked on and the class organization. In the chapters,

didactic notes and a glossary can be called up at the relevant spot, notes and links can be stored

and solutions displayed. Navigation is based on travel points that show what has already been

studied and where learning priorities have been set.

17

OPEN WORLD

Open World features topics to which young people easily relate. This way, the subject matter helps to motivate

pupils to learn English. They work with the Coursebook, which includes both educational content and tasks,

and with the Language Companion where they find the vocabulary, language structures, learning strategies

and input to reflect on their own learning. The instructions are short and easy to understand, with colour-coded

toolboxes providing additional support. Each unit is devoted to a main topic and concludes with a task (focus

page). Practice and repetition form part of learning a foreign language. Apart from the tasks in the Coursebook,

a wealth of interactive exercises and online audios are available.

Digitally on the go: The Digital Edition for Teachers allows pages from the Coursebook to be projected onto the

wall. Focusing and zooming, displaying solutions and playing audios are further practical functions. Using their

online access in the Coursebook, learners find numerous interactive exercises helping with vocabulary, listening,

and reading comprehension as well as language structures. Students can also work individually with the audios.

Quizlet, which is accessible to everyone, enables independent practicing of the vocabulary in the units.

Reaching goals: The basic requirements for English as the first foreign language are met with the first two

volumes, the advanced requirements with volumes 1 to 3. In each unit, the build-up of language competence

culminates in a final task (focus page). Multilingualism didactics, language mediation as well as language and

cultural awareness are fixed components of Open World. Comprehensive supplementary material The Teacher’s

Book includes, among other things, didactic comments and suggestions for all units, summaries, plans for

the school year, solutions, and specific proposals for internal differentiation. The Evaluations learning checks

provide teachers with practical comments for the preparation, implementation, and assessment of learning

checks. The numerous Support and Boost worksheets facilitate differentiation in the classroom. They are closely

coordinated with the Coursebook. The Digital Edition for Teachers of the Coursebook features useful extra

functions such as focusing and zooming parts of the page, displaying solutions, playing audios or creating notes.

18

YOUNG WORLD

Young World, the English textbook for primary school classes 3 to 6, familiarizes the children

with the foreign language in a natural and playful manner. It is action- and topic-oriented,

employs authentic materials from everyday life and fosters the development of a functional

command of several languages.

Combining language-learning with topics suited to pupils is central to Young World. Topic

centred teaching makes sure that children have fun learning English.

In the course of a unit, pupils acquire both vocabulary and language structures by working

on action-oriented tasks. In so doing, they learn everything they need to perform the task at

the end of the unit. At the same time, they acquire competencies that transcend individual

subjects.

Using transparent learning goals and simple questions for self-evaluation such as „What am I

learning here? What am I already capable of?“, Young World promotes cognitive awareness at

an early stage. The questions for self-evaluation can be found in the Activity Book, at the end

of each unit.

Young World attaches great importance to learning strategies and techniques of vocabulary

acquisition. In the context of a task, a learning strategy is introduced and applied in each unit.

The pupils also become familiar with strategies and techniques of how to learn words. All of the

strategies are taken up repeatedly as part of the spiral learning progression.

19

DAS GLARNER HEIMATBUCH -

ANALOG TRIFFT DIGITAL

THE WINNER OF THE WORLDDIDAC

INNOVATIVE APPROACH 2020

The tradition of the Glarner Heimatbuch goes back to the 19th century. However, even this

tradition cannot resist digitalization. The new project shows how analogue meets digital. Digital

learning units are used to refer to the texts in the analogue book. The learners are confronted

with the topic. They expand their knowledge and skills and transfer them through own projects.

A central point in the implementation of the student projects are also the application skills of

media and computer science. The digital Heimatbuch cooperates with many institutions of the

canton, which for example provide historical sources or excursions and involves many teachers

in the implementation. In a 360° virtual reality environment (to do 2020), the materials

and expert knowledge are also made available to adults. The Glarner Heimatbuch is thus

being expanded for lifelong learning. The basic idea, the tools and the implementation can be

adapted to other topics of other teaching and learning materials. What is important about this

learning medium is that it will continue to expand. The next stage of expansion is a new book

(2020/21) and it should be possible to publish the student projects (2021/22). It is therefore

never finished and so defined by the client.

22

SCHULSPORTPLANER

The prep app for physical education

With this new online tool PE teachers can compose their own digital sports plans - from

kindergarten up to the 9th grade. Schulsportplaner.ch offers a web-based planning guide

for physical education. Lessons can be compiled from more than 1000 modules and placed

directly into a quarterly plan. Every module contains a visual explanation of the exercises and

a 3D overview (hall plan). This web tool aims to facilitate the preparation of informative and

versatile physical education, in the scope of the goals and requirements of the Lehrplan 21.

The idea, as experience has shown, physical education in elementary and middle school is often

not sufficiently prepared and thought-out. Even with the proper teaching equipment, pupils

often perceive physical education lessons as random, arbitrary, and ill prepared. Inadequate

lesson plans in physical education may stem from the loose definition or the complexity of the

subject itself.

Schulsportplaner.ch helps to prepare versatile, purposeful and target-oriented physical

education over the course of one quarter or semester. Moreover, Schulsportplaner.ch can

provide relevant contents for each lesson regarding the curriculum Lehrplan 21. Many of the

modules refer to other digital and analogue teaching materials. They illustrate lesson contents

with exemplary videos and refer to alternative exercises and forms of play. In developing the

modules, our team of authors envisioned uplifting and ambitious physical education program.

This modular system visualizes past achievements and future goals more clearly. One can find

learning activities, physical exercises, and ideas for variations of tasks to vary the intensity.

Thereby, we seek to raise awareness regarding the structured development of meaningful

content and tailored lesson planning. The road to an ideal quarterly, half-yearly or annual plan.

23

EDUBOTICS

eduBotics offers the solution for the current digital education crisis on schools. There are many

offers on the market for the topic robotic and coding, which are however still very playful and

not sufficiently educational. The prices and age recommendations are furthermore not suitable

for primary and secondary schools. That is where eduBotics comes into play.

eduBotics is especially made for schools and combines the construction of machines and

robots with their coding based on the Arduino board.

We hereby take up the topic digitalization in the education sector in the long term and integrally.

We provide teachers as well as students curriculum-oriented products that make the digital

world understandable. Thanks to the building block system, the use is much more versatile

than with other robotic products. At the same time, the construction concept refrains from too

many details, so that the implementation within usual school lesson remains possible.

Updatable accompanying material for the use during school lessons – but also in a private

setting – is available for download and offers content for already 52 school lessons.

eduBotics is available for different age groups starting from 7 years.

The eduBotics assortment covers the following topics with several further sub-topics:

For primary schools:

Programming | Gear mechanisms |automobile and robot construction, with and without

programming use of sensors | control of sound and signal systems, e.g. traffic lights

For secondary schools:

Arbeit-Haushalt = WAH) in the 3rd cycle (secondary level I) is a teaching material made of

4 parts (filRouge, theme book, documentation, digital WAH, additional material: card set),

supplemented with digital components. The 16 chapters of the book cover all five competences

areas of the Lehrplan 21. Das WAH Buch focuses on the various requirements of daily life by

showing the close relationships and dependencies between business, work and household.

Thanks to its form based on modules, it ensures a lot of flexibility, be it for the design of the

hourly table models of the cantons, as well as for various lesson settings (single or double

lessons, block days, project-like lessons) and class structures (year and mixed-age classes).

Starting from the model of didactic reduction, the teaching material guides teachers to initiate

complete learning processes for their pupils to develop competencies. For this purpose, the

teaching material provides sets of coordinated tasks (confrontation, development, synthesis,

and transfer tasks).

The individual tasks perceive certain functions in the students’ learning process and may be

adapted to the different heterogeneous requirements.

28

FINNISH ONLINE QUALITY - DEVELOPMENT

PROGRAM FOR TEACHERS

Soprano ś cascading pedagogical competence development concept. This cascading pedagogical

competence development concept is a three-stage concept including the following stages:

Stage 1 -Train-the trainers (TOT)

In the first stage we train the trainers, local educational professors in pedagogy, which is

applicable to all teachers. We introduce them to modern pedagogy, which guides teachers

towards learning facilitators instead of traditional lecturing and we organize workshops about

modern e-pedagogy. This stage includes also individual learning as well as practical training

with students.

Stage 2 –Lead teacher training In the second stage each participant of the TOT

group trains an own group of 20 participants in becoming lead teachers and understand methods

and using of online environment in their own organizationscountry wide in all provinces or areas.

Learning methods include online training and remote workshops, which are organized in themes

such as the basics of learned-centered pedagogy and how to facilitate learning in practice. With

these trainings the lead teachers are given capabilities to work as school developers. In this

stage students, TOT and Lead Teachers are translating materials in their home languages from

English to help easier understanding.
