President's Message
Mark Wolkow
Big Surprise!
This is a story that some of you have likely heard before. It happened
some time in the late 1980’s. I was abound 30 and Pat and I had been
married for a couple of years. Karen was a toddler; Diana was probably
about one. We were in the Sanctuary for some kind of program and the
topic had shifted to volunteer leaders. I had barely dipped my toe into
any kind of role at the Temple, yet found myself at the end of Rabbi
Block’s pointing finger, forecasting that one day I would be President of
the shul.
You can imagine my surprise. I grew up in a Conservative shul and was
active in Youth Group, but had been almost completely removed from
synagogue life from age 18 to 27(ish). I knew hardly anyone at TAS, and
did not know the first thing about shuls and how they operated.
Nonetheless, I soon became involved, was nominated for the Board of
Trustees, and in 10-12 years found myself as Temple President. It is one of
the best things to ever happen to me.
RPC Message
Melissa Immel & Mike Mullis
Greetings From the Religious Practices Committee!
"The High Holidays are approaching fast; can you believe it? The Religious
Practices Committee is already hard at work planning and getting things
ready for S'lichot (Sept 9), Rosh Hashanah (Sept 15-17), and Yom Kippur
(Sept 24-25).
Before you know it, we'll all be together welcoming 5784 as only Temple
Adas Shalom can. And we could use YOUR help! Have you ever thought
about being part of High Holidays and helping to make it a wonderful
time for everyone? Contact Melissa (rpc@templeadasshalom.org) or Mike
(musicdirector@templeadasshalom.org) and let us know you'd like to
volunteer to assist and when you are available! There are many things you
could do to help out from inside the Sanctuary to our Youth Services, and
more! And remember, it's a Mitzvah!
While we're on the subject of volunteering, the RPC is also in need of help
during our Friday Night Services. Are you good with technology? Are you
OK with technology? Are you interested in BECOMING good with
technology? Well we want you! Come be a "Tech Lead"! The Tech Lead is
in charge of making sure our Services stream to Zoom and YouTube as
well as making sure everything sounds good in the Sanctuary. Contact
Melissa or Mike if you are interested! We'll even train you!
As well we also need Greeters! Someone at the door with a great smile
and a hearty "Shabbat Shalom!" to greet the incoming service-goers. It's
an easy job, but someone has to do it! Again, contact Melissa or Mike if
you are interested.
Until next month, stay cool and we'll see you at Shabbat Services!
Melissa Immel & Mike Mullis, Your dutiful RPC co-chairs.
A continued thank you to everyone who helps support our
wonderful school!
Happy August! First and foremost, we want to thank everyone for
supporting the return of our annual Rummage Sale. Our school raised
just over $2,000 from the event, and it was successful due to your
donations, baked goods, monetary gifts, and volunteer hours!
REGULAR PROGRAMMING:
FAMILY SHABBAT SERVICE: Every other month
during the academic school year, Rabbi Meeka
and Mike Mullis, choir director and music
teacher, lead one Friday night service that is
designed with families in mind. Family Shabbat
nights begin at 5:30 pm with a child-friendly
meal, and the service runs from 6:15 – 7:00 pm.
Attending Family Shabbat is a great way to
enjoy the company of friends, relax after a long
week, and provide further understanding of
Hebrew learning!
TOT SHIRA: Each month during the school year Kehillah MAGNET
welcomes families with children 5 and under to attend the Pre-K/K
music class at our religious school. “Tot Shira” is a wonderful way to
introduce little ones to our dedicated teachers and fantastic students.

Dear Congregants,
I hope everyone is having a great summer I have a few upcoming events to
share with you. On Tuesday August 8 at 7:00 pm Robin Way will be
presenting how to make some tasty New Year’s desserts. This is part of our
Desserts & Discussion program, and will be both in-person at the Temple
Kitchen and on Zoom. Members are encouraged to join Robin in the
kitchen to view or help. Robin will be making New Moon Butter Cookies &
Apple & Honey Phyllo Rolls, sounds delicious to me. Robin is a great teacher
so this is an event you don't want to miss!
On September 30 at 10:00 am we will have our next book discussion it will
be Zoom only. This book is Who by Fire, by Matt Friedman. “It's the story of
a young artist in crisis and a young country at war, and the powerful
resonance of the chord struck between them. A beautiful, haunting book.”
The story takes place during the 1973 Yom Kippur War. This is very timely as
our High Holidays are approaching. Adult Ed committee member Denise
Gordon will be leading this exciting discussion.
On October 15, join us for a day trip to Philadelphia. The first stop is Beth
Sholom synagogue, which is the only synagogue designed by Frank Lloyd
Wright. Then on to downtown Philly for lunch, followed by a self-guided
tour of the American Jewish History Museum. Please see the Calendar for
more details and registration for this trip. Thankyou Adult Ed committee
member Roz Spergel for arranging this trip.
We truly hope you will join us for these upcoming events, and please send us suggestions and
requests for topics, movies, or programs you would like the Adult Ed. Committee to provide for you.
As always feel free to sit in on a meeting, just click on the
link in the Calendar.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
Safety & Security
Pat Wolkow
High Holidays are nearly upon us. We have made great strides
in improving the safety and security of our building. With the
three grants that we have written and awarded over the recent
years, we have filled many holes in our “safety net.” We have a
few more grant dollars to use and are working on another
grant request to fill outstanding physical gaps. Is there more
that can be done? YES, and that involves you! Our safety net
only works if we as a congregation use it properly.
SEE SOMETHING?
SAY SOMETHING!
SO, WE CAN DO
SOMETHING!
security@templeadasshalom.org
Here is how you can do your part:
· Wear your name badge so that volunteer greeters and other
congregants and staff can identify you as a member of our
congregation.
· Add a few more funds to your annual pledge to cover needs
that are not allowable by the grants.
· Contact your security team, at the email address below, to
request training on what to do to keep safe when visiting our
campus.
· Attend training sessions that are offered, to help you and
those with you to be safe.
· Join our team as extra eyes and hands.
