Hello and welcome to our Summer 2023 newsletter.
It’s been a fantastic year so far for everybody involved at Edge Services.
We’ve had the successful added addition of a new public venue in Middlesborough, taking our portfolio of
venues across the UK to twelve locations, the introduction of our highly anticipated RoSPA Customised Award
Level 4 Dementia Care Key Trainer’s Certificate and as we move in to the second half of the year things won’t
stop there, watch this space for an exciting finish to the year.
Across the company we are so proud of all the hard work, dedication and effort that has gone into the
research and design of our Dementia Care course. The course provides in-depth knowledge for people
working and living with Dementia and helps to upskill those working throughout the Health and Social Care
sector as well as people caring for family or friends within the community, this certainly has never been in
greater demand.
It has been fantastic to partner with RoSPA on this project and our thanks go to them for their valued and
professional input, helping to provide us with an innovative new qualification that looks to upskill and give
people the tools necessary to understand and manage Dementia both in the workplace and at home.
Speaking of RoSPA, on May 16th this year we were invited and attended the annual national RoSPA Health
and Safety Awards Gala Dinner at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. It was a night of glitz and glamour,
and we were honoured and privileged to attend as VIP guests for the evening. We were certainly well looked
after and a massive thank you to RoSPA for a fantastic evening. It truly was amazing to see so many hard
working, committed and dedicated companies coming together to celebrate one another’s achievements.
Finally, I must finish with a huge thank you and congratulations to all the team within Edge Services. Earlier
this year we found out we had been shortlisted for an award at the RoSPA Qualification Awards 2023, a
huge accolade and honour in itself. Then in July two members of our team attended the awards ceremony
held at the House of Lords, London and we were named winner of the category ‘First Class Instructor Led
Provider of the Year’. This was a huge honour and is testament to all the teams hard work, dedication, and
professionalism. Well done everybody we are very, very proud of you all.
It just leaves me to say a big thank you to all our clients who put their trust in us to deliver quality and
professional training to each and every delegate, we are privileged to have built up so many strong
relationships and long may that continue into the future.

EDGE Services, based in York, has fought off
stiff competition to scoop a debuting Award,
demonstrating its commitment to health and safety
excellence at the first-ever RoSPA Qualification
Course Assurance Awards.
EDGE Services achieved a Winner placing in the
First-Class Instructor Led Provider of the Year
category, demonstrating its commitment to putting
excellence right at the heart of learning and skills
development by providing high-quality training
courses.
The free-to-enter awards allow existing Course
Assurance customers the chance to showcase
their training quality, placing them as a benchmark
against other course-assured training providers,
resulting in the potential to win tenders and new
clients.
The judging panel included four health and safety
experts: RoSPA’s CEO, Errol Taylor; Independent
Public Health Consultant, Dr Michael Craig Watson;
RoSPA Qualifications board member Peter Brown
and RoSPA’s Achievements Director Julia Small.
Julia Small, RoSPA’s Achievements Director, said:
“As health and safety leaders, we understand how
fundamental it is for businesses to provide first-rate

Finalists from each category were invited to an
exclusive event at the House of Lords, which
included a guided tour allowing guests to look inside
one of the world’s most historic and recognisable
buildings, as well as a special three-course
luncheon. During the afternoon the President of
RoSPA, Baroness Jolly presented the winners of
each category with their awards.
RoSPA is a not-for-profit organisation that has worked for more
than 100 years to help people recognise and reduce their risk
of accidents, at home, on the road, at work and at leisure. Our
goal is to enable everyone to live their lives to the full, safely.
RoSPA Qualifications is an awarding Organisation (AO)

and other divisions of RoSPA.

NHS at 75
Celebrating the NHS
On the 5th of July 2023, the NHS celebrated 75
years. Treating over a million people a day in
England, the NHS touches all our lives. When
it was founded in 1948, the NHS was the first
universal health system to be available to all,
free at the point of delivery. Today, nine in 10
people agree that healthcare should be free of
charge, more than four in five agree that care
should be available to everyone, and that the
NHS makes them most proud to be British.
To commemorate the occasion, Professor Dame
Elizabeth Anionwu spoke at the NHS’ 75th Birthday
service at Westminster Abbey London. Elizabeth
was the first ever Sickle Cell Nurse Specialist in the
NHS.
‘I had an excellent experience of being nursed as a
child, and that’s why I wanted to become one from
the age of four. Becoming the first ever Sickle Cell
Nurse Specialist in 1977 is the best thing that has
happened to me.’
Working for the NHS for more than 44 years,
Elizabeth started work as a School Nurse
Assistant at the age of 16 in Wolverhampton. After
completing her nursing training at Paddington
General Hospital and making friends for life along
the way, she was motivated to inspire change
across the whole of healthcare.
developing the first Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia
Centre in 1979.
There are now more than 30 of these centres
across the UK, which have all been modelled on her
work.
Due to her achievements in revolutionising care,
Elizabeth was knighted for her services to nursing
and the Mary Seacole Statue Appeal, along
with receiving other plaudits too — like having a
simulation ward named in her honour at Kingston
Hospital, UK.
Speaking this week, with ​His Royal Highness The
Duke of Edinburgh, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and
Sir Keir Starmer in attendance, Elizabeth detailed
her tireless work to ensure people affected by sickle
cell disease and thalassaemia get the support they
need.

Being of Nigerian descent herself, Elizabeth studied
a subject close to her heart, sickle cell disease, an
inherited illness that affects a person’s red blood
cells and disproportionately impacts people with an
African or Caribbean family background.
This led Elizabeth to become the first ever Sickle
Cell Nurse Specialist in the NHS, where she
helped to revolutionise care for those suffering
from the disease by improving care, and eventually,

Podcast launched to help disabled people
and those with long-term health conditions
in the workplace.
Britain’s workplace regulator has just launched
a podcast outlining seven principles to support
disabled workers and those with long-term health
conditions to thrive in the workplace.
Late last year the Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
launched new guidance on what employers can do to
support staff.
This guidance is openly discussed by host Mick
Ord, former BBC Radio journalist, Moya Woolley,
Occupational Health Policy Team Leader at HSE and
Rebecca Hyrslova, Policy Advisor at Federation of
Small Businesses (FSB) in a new podcast.
An estimated 149.3 million working days were lost
because of sickness or injury in the UK in 2021,
equivalent to 4.6 days per worker.
The HSE guidance focuses on early and supportive
action from employers, outlines employers’
responsibilities, and preventative steps they can take
to help people stay in work and be a productive team
member.
Mick, Moya, and Rebecca discuss seven principles to
support disabled workers and workers with long-term
health conditions in work:
• Create a supportive and enabling workplace.
• Take an inclusive approach to workplace health.
• Understand the work barriers that impact on workers.
• Make suitable workplace adjustments or modification.

• Use effective and accessible communication.
• Support sickness absence and return to work.

Care Industry News
A care home operator is coming
under fire after health and safety
failings were found to have
taken place under the care of an
employee who was 80 years old.
The 80-year-old is alleged to
have not called an ambulance
for a woman with a head injury.
It was also alleged that the care
worker, who was older than
some of the people she cared
for, was not strong enough to
hoist residents at the facility.
The care worker resigned after
an investigation resulted in
disciplinary action in the wake of
the resident’s death.
The resident had an unexplained
head injury, following which
the employee did not call 999
because she believed it to be an
old injury. The woman later died
in hospital with pneumonia.
A spokesperson commented:
“The behaviour and attitude of a
number of our former colleagues
was simply unacceptable, and
not in line with our values of
transparency and kindness.
“We have a new local and
regional management team in
place since this incident occurred
in June 2022, and have had
extensive senior support in the
home for some time now to
ensure that lessons are learned.”

Top Tips to Prevent Back Pain During Driving

Car makers have made huge
strides in the past decades
by providing us with vehicles
that we can adjust to suit our
individual needs. However,
when we choose a car we
often don’t think about how
the vehicle will affect our spine. Instead, we
may choose a car based on how it appeals
to us visually, the fuel economy or its safety
rating.
It is up to the individual driver to use the
options to optimise comfort during driving.
The following are some suggestions to help
alleviate back pain during driving:
• Position the steering wheel to allow a comfortable
hold, with minimal strain on your upper body
by keeping a slight bend in your elbows and your
shoulders still in contact with the back of the seat.
• Sit as far back in the seat as possible, ensuring
your back is fully, evenly supported from your
pelvis to your shoulders.
• If your vehicle is equipped with a lumbar support,
ensure it is positioned in the small of your back. If
your vehicle doesn’t have this option, consider
using a small towel roll to provide support to the
lumbar curve.
• For an optimal view of the road, raise the seat
as high as comfortable ensuring there is
adequate space between your thighs and the
steering column. This should give you a clear
view but also allow you to see all the dashboard
controls.
• If you are making a long journey, take breaks,
leaving the car to move around. Consider doing a
few stretches before and after the journey.
• If using a Satnav make sure that it does not
obscure your view of the road. You don’t want to
have to look down or turn your head a long way,
but it shouldn’t block your view of the road.
The human body isn’t designed to sit for prolonged
periods of time. But if you consider these practical
tips, the likelihood of developing or worsening back
pain whilst driving will likely be reduced.
• Position all the mirrors to achieve a clear view
of the road without having to move your head,
you should only have to move your eyes to see
out of the mirrors.
• Adjust the seat to allow you to fully depress the
clutch without over-stretching at your hip, keeping
a slight bend in your knee.
• Use the seat tilt function (if available) to support
the full length of your thigh.

Scottish Manual Handling Forum Study Day
18th May 2023
In May I attended the Scottish Manual Handling Forum
Study Day in Dunblane. It was very well organised and an
opportunity to meet other liked minded people. Despite
inital sceptcism reagrding the first keynote speaker
session, ‘The side effects of Kindness.’ it proved thought
provoking. The speaker, Dr David Hamilton PhD has
written several books, one of which is ‘The Five Side
Effects of Kindness.’ In fact, it’s not many speakers who
can encourage people, who don’t know each other, to
hug. The main point of the session was to highlight that
even small acts of kindness impact on our, and others,
psychological and physical well-being. If we show
kindness to a person, then they are more likely to show
kindness to someone else, so like ripples in a pond, the
first act influences many others. There was also a short
YouTube film which has had 37million views called ‘Life
Vest Insight.’
The second speaker, Keith McMurray, talked about
Principles of Movement, really underpinning how people
move and how to utilise that when assisting to move/
transfer and/or choosing equipment. Interestingly, he
talked about 3 types of patients/clients in terms of mobility
and ability: The Positive Active, the Negative Active and
Passive. For example, the Positive Active patient/client
might be the most suitable for singlehanded care.
For those working in hospital or have the need to use a
Lateral Transfer Board (LTB), we were shown the Patient
Transfer Scale (PTS), developed by Gillian Taylor of the
Marsden Group. The PTS weighs the patient at the same
time as the transfer is undertaken. We also heard of
the experience from a Health board who had to manage
a manual handling improvement notice, issued by the
HSE, and were given some useful insights and tips. I also
attended two workshops, where we had an opportunity
to work with other people in problem solving. I chose
hoisting and single-handed care.

EDGE Services are delighted to announce that this
year, we are heading down to the NEC Birmingham
on the 22-23 November 2023 to exhibit at
The Occupational Therapy Show.
For those attending this year, you can find us at
stand H32. Pop over and say hello, it is always a
pleasure to see our delegates and professional
colleagues at conferences across the UK.
The study day was an opportunity for people to gettogether
to assist in the review the current Scottish
Manual Handling Passport Scheme (SMHPS). This is
also a reminder, for those EDGE trainers working in
Scotland, to register your organisation for the SMHPS
as Health Boards, Local Authorities, and third sector
organisations (private, voluntary etc) have.
