Get Ready For Back-to-School Sales<br />
THIS month is the official start of the<br />
back-to-school selling season. Although<br />
some retailers may have jumped the<br />
gun and started last month, <strong>August</strong> is<br />
traditionally the highest sales volume<br />
month for school merchandise sales.<br />
AUGUST is also a big month for trade<br />
shows when store owners and online<br />
sellers trek around the country to search<br />
out the latest hot and trendy goods.<br />
WHILE for shoppers it feels like summer<br />
has just started, for us retailers we need to<br />
kick off the flip flops and dust the sand<br />
from our toes and start preparing for the<br />
next season which will lead us quickly<br />
into the holiday sales frenzy.<br />
FIRST and fore-most we should<br />
capitalize on back-to-school. There<br />
is a frenzy among shoppers that will<br />
be needing everything from apparel,<br />
accessories, electronics and school<br />
supplies. Many older students will be<br />
attending college which means lots of<br />
household and houseware items to set up<br />
their dorm rooms or apartments. These<br />
students represent millions, if not billions<br />
of dollars. How about getting your store’s<br />
share?<br />
MAKE sure that your selling space has<br />
items that can take advantage of each<br />
selling season. If you sell apparel, play<br />
up the merchandise as being “great for<br />
>> ON-LINE SOURCING<br />
back-to-school” or add signs in your<br />
housewares section that these plates for<br />
“great for your dorm room.” It is up to<br />
you to make sure that you are clueing in<br />
your shoppers that your merchandise is<br />
just what they need to buy and a perfect<br />
fit for them.<br />
ENSURE that your space is bright and<br />
cheerful to attract shoppers and make<br />
their children happy about loading up<br />
their baskets. There’s a very limited<br />
window for making money for this<br />
season before we hit the next, so move<br />
quickly for the success of your business.<br />
NOW is also the time to make sure that<br />
you are ready for the holiday season.<br />
Start reviewing Halloween and Christmas<br />
merchandise and start creating your<br />
buying plan and PO’s. Start planning<br />
your space decorations and promotions<br />
as well. And, as mentioned before, this is<br />
the month to visit the best trade shows to<br />
find new goods and suppliers.<br />

AI Will Change Retail<br />
IF you have been following the recent uptick in AI development you are probably as alarmed<br />
as we are about unleashing this unregulated and potentially dangerous technology. But untested<br />
and dangerous has never stopped us before when it comes to rolling out things that will potentially<br />
harm us and our civilization. But that is just my humble opinion after doing some research on AI. Of<br />
course, those who tout it will extoll the wonderful virtues that it has. And it does have some useful<br />
benefits.<br />
RECENTLY the National Retail Federation shared a report that Artificial Intelligence will change<br />
retail. The article assures us that the benefits will outweigh the worst-case scenarios and that the<br />
reality will be different! Well, I feel better already.<br />
LEVI Straus, remember this company that lost a giant market share this year with their woke<br />
marketing and firing of CEO? They tell us that AI is already changing retail and that they would be<br />
working with customized AI generated models. American Eagle also said that they are using AI for<br />
inventory tracking. Wait, is this the same American Eagle that removed a bracelet from their line<br />
because it emulated a slave bracelet? That was five years ago so the company is probably allknowing<br />
now about things. Puma company is also starting to use AI for their personalized customer<br />
styling. Wait, isn’t Puma the same company that had Australians in an outrage earlier this year by<br />
going “vegan” and denouncing kangaroo leather? Google it. So, here are three major companies<br />
using AI who have all made, in my opinion, bad business decisions, but we are told everything will<br />
be OK.<br />
AI will be used to help with company’s models to offer more diverse body types and use AI<br />
models in place of live people in their offerings. Yes, I want to dress like that robot with the creepy<br />
eyes, thank you.<br />
THE companies claim all of this will help the consumer feel more comfortable about what<br />
they are buying and make business operations more efficient. One executive said that “they are<br />
listening to the conversations” and want to understand the full power of AI. They are hoping that<br />
the technology will help optimize pricing, forecasting and marketing. These retailers along with<br />
groups like NRF are busy discussing and advising legislators. That should make all of us feel assured.<br />
THE reality is that it’s going to happen whether we like it or not. The government proves time<br />
and again that they are incompetent and incapable of managing and even understanding<br />
technology. Time to start building your bunker!<br />
US Economy Moving Forward<br />
IT is been quite a roller coaster with the economy over the last two years and it has been<br />
amazing that with high inflation, supply chain issues, general mismanagement by the Fed we have<br />
not gone off the abyss. This is good news for us all and economists are hopeful that we can start<br />
heading into the holiday season with positivity. Inflation seems to be easing slightly and with high<br />
employment it is helping move things forward, slowly but surely.<br />
THERE will be a lot of focus on the Fed to see if they are going to continue raising interest as<br />
there is a lot of dissension on this. Some of the most impressive economists said the simplest answer<br />
to resolving our economic woes is for the government to stop spending so much money! Seems<br />
easy. Think it will happen? Not a chance. Buckle up…the ride continues.<br />

The government (Small Business Administration)<br />
and venture capitalists can provide additional<br />
sources of capital. The first requires that<br />
two banks turn you down, then the government<br />
may guarantee the loan. In rare instances the<br />
government actually makes the loan. Government<br />
funds are scarce these days. SBA loans<br />
require lots of time and paperwork. I know one<br />
person who has used that source. He says he<br />
thinks he qualified because of his medical disability.<br />
Venture capitalists may invest in your<br />
business, but they will want some say-so in<br />
how your company is run.<br />
Partnerships<br />
Starting a business with a partner can work<br />
well, especially if one person has management<br />
ability and professional expertise and the other<br />
has capital. But, as in any “marriage,” people<br />
change. Just make certain that you both (all)<br />
agree upon the nature of your business, your<br />
individual responsibilities, your goals, and even<br />
how to end the partnership. Each partner<br />
should write out his or her expectations prior to<br />
starting the company. Compare notes, reach an<br />
agreement, then put your “Partnership Agreement”<br />
in writing and sign it. Paragraph one<br />
should begin: “Why we are going into business<br />

together.” Have a statement of<br />
purpose; you may need a reminder<br />
as time passes. Also write<br />
down which assets belong to the<br />

when. Define “profits.”<br />
Do you need a lawyer for this?<br />
Yes and no. My partner and I<br />
wrote our own contract and took it<br />
to a lawyer who retyped it and<br />
added a few “parties of the first<br />
part, hereinafter refereed to as<br />
...ʼs. Still, our willingness to have<br />
a lawyer look at our contract made us both<br />
more comfortable. We had only known each<br />
other for six months and he had been my boss.<br />
Getting out is easier. If one of you changes your<br />
mind, you should have a clause in your original<br />
agreement that states how to dissolve the partnership.<br />
The end of a partnership may or may<br />
not enable one partner to remain in the same<br />

business license, and with all that you have<br />
learned and saved, start over on your own.<br />
What if one partner just stops participating in<br />
the business? Say he or she has started taking<br />
a lot of long vacations, or just never shows up<br />
to work, as agreed upon in the partnership<br />
agreement. This happened to me. For about a<br />
year, my partner, Fred, was never around when<br />
I needed his help. I ran Midnight Oil Typesetting<br />
on my own; his half of our deal was to run his<br />
print shops so as to generate business for our<br />
typesetting company. He got into financial trouble<br />
and started to be “invisible,” figuratively<br />
speaking. Business was dropping off and I resented<br />
my obligation to give him 51% of the<br />
profits, since he wasnʼt putting forth his agreedupon<br />

That wasnʼt the way we had planned it; itʼs the<br />
way things went. I managed to keep the doors<br />
open, provide the service, and take home the<br />
same salary (but not more) for two and a half<br />
more years.<br />
It could have been worse. Guyʼs partner died in<br />
a car accident. Afterward, Guy chose to remain<br />
in business, twice moving to better locations in<br />
the mall. I ran into a former business associate<br />
who told me her partner just got tired of living in<br />
Salt Lake and moved to California. She insisted<br />
that her partners buy her out at the price she<br />
set. They closed the business instead.<br />
But the saddest situation I know, firsthand, is<br />
when someone assumed she was a partner<br />
when she was not. In gratitude for Mollyʼs help<br />
in launching her company, Edna (not her real<br />

name) gave Molly stock in her corporation and<br />
the title of secretary/treasurer on the incorporation<br />

Things worked out fine when the business was<br />
new, enthusiasm was high, and the bottom line<br />
was in (or near) the black. But when Edna<br />
began to sell ads on trade, she kept all the<br />
goods. She also complained that she wasnʼt<br />
“getting paid,” since she “took no cash home.”<br />
The staff (including myself) had little sympathy<br />
for that type of thinking. Ednaʼs responsibility<br />
was to sell and manage; Mollyʼs was bidding<br />
and art direction, according to their verbal<br />
agreement. At first, they consulted and agreed<br />
before taking on new projects or spending capital.<br />
Then Edna just took off on her own, and<br />
Molly heard the news later. Eventually, Mollyʼs<br />
input into the affairs of the company was less<br />

bank, when the daily mail proves differently.<br />
They start to say that the store will have 100 bicycle<br />
parts delivered Friday; Friday comes and<br />
goes and the parts donʼt show. They make excuses,<br />
like the truck was delayed. And when<br />

owner will either explain it away: “It just isnʼt<br />

and rave. You may see a lot of flailing arms and<br />
hear angry tones. But the other fifty parts will<br />
never show up. Meanwhile, you have promised<br />
your customers their bicycles would be repaired<br />
a week after you anticipated the shipment. You<br />
have become a part of the lie. I left two jobs because<br />
someone made me part of the lie.<br />
You cannot fix another personʼs integrity.<br />
If your business partner starts to manifest<br />
these symptoms, get out. If your employer<br />
does, thatʼs a good time to launch<br />
your own business.<br />

This happened to Fredʼs print shop. It also happened<br />
to my typesetting business. Fred spent<br />
money on a third location, which attracted almost<br />
no business. He ended up in debt, but<br />
found a buyer for his business-in-trouble. It took<br />
four more years for the business to close.<br />
I realized that desktop publishing was enabling<br />
businesses to do the same thing I was selling<br />
but cheaper and faster. I realized that the “low<br />
end” of the typesetting business was changing.<br />
The demand for typesetting was going to require<br />
phototypesetting equipment, which meant<br />
a $20–40,000 investment and employees to<br />
keep those machines working all day (and<br />
night) to justify that investment. I decided to sell<br />
my business. I admit to some sort of luck. A<br />
customer of mine who had a high-paying state<br />

and her eighteen-year-old daughter,<br />
who had shown some interest in graphic arts,<br />

company employed three<br />
daughters and Bev. Each of<br />
the daughters earns more than I ever did. But<br />

do it. And while I had very little to do with it, people<br />
I meet who still do business there often say,<br />
“You started Midnight Oil Typesetting!” They<br />
must wonder how I could leave something so<br />
successful. Well, it was always successful, but<br />
it is a different business now. They typeset for<br />
five print shops and<br />
accept jobs that my<br />
machinery could<br />
never have handled.<br />

I earn less; but I like<br />

So before you get started in a small business,<br />
it would be wise to decide if you want to be in<br />
that line of work for a long time. Some people<br />
start businesses just to get them started, then<br />
they sell them to people who want to be in that<br />
line of work for a lifetime. Such people have<br />
sufficient capital to launch a new business<br />
quickly and try to sell it. They are willing to accept<br />
both success and failure; when they fail<br />
they dust themselves off and try again. Some<br />
of these people are crooks and are selling<br />
promises, not businesses.<br />
For anyone who is considering starting his or<br />
her own business, know that costs are high at<br />
first and income is relatively low. Are you willing<br />
to stick with it? Other factors cause costs to be<br />

time, and it occurs in many forms.<br />
Advertising should be targeted to a specific audience<br />
and sell a specific item; whereas public<br />
relations – and its offshoot, publicity – should<br />

a promotion is an event. The “Grand<br />
Opening” is the most easily identifiable form of<br />

Can you do your own advertising? Yes and no.<br />
Since every ad agency I know works to design<br />
the ad that will suit the client, you are always<br />
“doing your own.” But a professional has skills<br />
that you probably donʼt, including artistic ability,<br />
a familiarity with typography, and knowledge of<br />
what type of customer reads or watches which<br />
medium. No matter how talented your sons or<br />
daughters are in art, if you can tell an amateur<br />
drew your ad, the public can too.<br />

Candies. Guyʼs and Marieʼs business names<br />
convey what they sell, but they must compete<br />
with dozens of similarly named businesses.<br />

While Guy and Marie know the difference between<br />
their products and the competitionʼs<br />
(handmade vs. mass-produced; hand-dipped<br />
vs. machine-made), the public would never<br />
know unless someone (or something) told<br />
them. So these two businesses are building images.<br />
Mrs. Cavanaugh started in 1972 and now<br />
has five stores and five department store outlets,<br />
which testifies to her success. Guy started<br />
in 1983; but his clientele grew and the fact that<br />
he was still in business after five years, when<br />
statistically most start-ups fail, testifies to the<br />
effectiveness of his marketing strategies.<br />
Carriage Horse Livery offers horse and carriage<br />
rides in downtown Salt Lake City. For the first<br />
three years, the only advertising Wayne Scott,<br />
president, used was a sign on the back of each<br />
carriage that showed people whom to call.<br />
Since his business was one-of-a-kind, anyone<br />
who looked up “Horse and Carriage Rides” in<br />
the Yellow Pages was going to find Carriage<br />
Horse Livery. As soon as he had competition,<br />
he began advertising in local magazines so that<br />
the name Carriage Horse Livery stuck in peopleʼs<br />

When Wayne<br />
and his family<br />
started the<br />
b u s i n e s s ,<br />
they received<br />
a gift: an<br />
abundance of<br />
free publicity.<br />
They didnʼt<br />
have to do<br />
any public relations<br />

to attract this<br />
publicity. Their business was such an attractive<br />
addition to the city that reporters sought them<br />
out. Anyone who wrote: “Go see the 250,000<br />
Christmas lights on Temple Square,” was certain<br />
to include a line like: “in a horse and carriage.”<br />
(I did.) Since Carriage Horse Livery was<br />

the only horse and carriage company in town,<br />
this type of generic mention did it lots of good.<br />
By 1988, not only did Wayne have competition,<br />
he had expanded his “product line” to include a<br />
horse-drawn sleigh, hay wagons, and a tour<br />
trolley. Since hay and sleigh rides donʼt have<br />
high visibility on city streets, Wayne had to let<br />
people know they existed and entice people to<br />
try them. In addition to magazine advertising,<br />
the company now works to attract the publicity<br />
it used to get all the time – now Wayne wants<br />
the companyʼs name mentioned in the story.<br />
One of his drivers also works as a marketing<br />
and public relations manager. She contacts<br />
writers and encourages them to write stories<br />
about the company. Sometimes ads and stories<br />
are negotiated as a package deal (which is how<br />
I came to write about them.)<br />

about how rotten and unethical the competition<br />
is. But I would never print that information in a<br />
single-interview business feature story. If I did<br />
use the information in a story for a newspaper,<br />
I would call the competition to hear their side of<br />

donʼt have anything insightful to say.<br />

thatʼs news. You can probably get a paragraph<br />
in the townʼs business paper by letting them<br />
know you exist; a letter or phone call will do.<br />
