WE HAVE A CHURCH SCHOOL
Our goal this year is for the members of our church and the
dedicated individuals at our school to foster a mutual
interconnection. We will have a shared commitment to
nurturing the spiritual and educational growth of our
children. Church members will actively engage with the
school, volunteering their time, skills, and resources to
enrich the learning environment. Likewise, school members
will enthusiastically participate in church activities, forging
strong spiritual bonds. This symbiotic relationship ensures a
holistic approach to education, instilling values and
character development that extend beyond the classroom
walls. May the Lord help us create a thriving community
where our church and school intertwine synergistically.
Our School is
Your School
BY BEN SHURTLIFF, SENIOR PASTOR
Do you believe in miracles?
What about incredible answers
to prayer? Let me share
something only the Lord could
have done for our church and
school campus. At the close of
last school year only two of our
seven teachers planned to
return to Port Charlotte
Adventist School (PCAS) this
fall. We were told by the
education department at the
conference that we would likely
not be able to fill all five
positions we had open.
Furthermore, we were told to
be prepared to greatly scale
back the size and scope of the
school due to the potential
teacher deficit. The school
board understood the odds
and knew it would be a miracle
to get teachers – and more
importantly, the right teachers
for our students. We prayed
earnestly for God to provide.
Church family, God answers
prayer! Today I had the
privilege of attending one of
the first PCAS staff meetings for
the coming school year. We are
so very blessed with our
current staff. The school board
interviewed candidates and
prayed over each one. If there
was not an overwhelming
peace and consensus regarding
the potential teacher we chose
not to hire them, even though
we had a desperate need. That
faith in God to provide, not only
the number of teachers but the
right caliber of teachers, paid
off in full! Looking over our

The school and church staffs gathered together to celebrate the beginning of a new school year.
God is ready and willing to
grow and mature your child,
our educators, pastors,
families, and our entire campus
all at the same time. However,
it will take concerted efforts
and prayer. I encourage you to
pray for God’s will to be done at
PCAS. It is His school, and He
has already richly blessed it.My
prayer is that every family in
our church and community,
whom God is drawing to attend
PCAS, will experience those
blessings!
teaching team I feel grateful
and blessed at how the Lord
provided.
Matthew 6:33 states, “Seek ye
first the kingdom of God and
His righteousness, and all these
things will be added unto you.”
I am grateful that our principal,
Al Cruz, our board chair,
Sandee Lawrence, and our
school and church boards are
seeking to do that very thing --
put God first and His standards
of righteousness. When we
trust the Lord and seek to obey
His Word, we can expect
miraculous answers to prayer.
Tria and I are starting prayer
time at the school. I invite all
parents and church members
to join us in praying for our
students, teachers, and their
families. We will meet in the
library and pray weekly on
Monday from 8:00-9:00 a.m.
Just like God answered our
prayers in sending us fantastic
teachers, against all odds, God
will answer the prayers all
throughout the coming school
year. Come and join us and let’s
witness the miraculous
answers to prayer God has in
store this coming year!
PCAS is not just our school, it is
your school, and first and
foremost it is God’s school.
With earnest prayer we give
God permission to transform
PCAS into the school He wants
it to be. I hope it becomes
abundantly evident that PCAS
is a wonderful option for our
church families with school-age
children. I invite you to step out
in faith and put your kids in
PCAS. Trust that as we all work
and pray, PCAS will represent
the best education, with
heaven in mind, that we can
offer.
"When we
trust the
Lord and
seek to obey
His Word,
we can
expect
miraculous
answers to
prayer."

Words from
the Wise:
Floyd Greenleaf
BY LAURA DANCEK
Our church has had several newsletter editors
over the years, but none nearly as distinguished
as Floyd Greenleaf. Dr. Greenleaf, a former
history professor and academic dean at Southern
Adventist University, was also a published author.
His books were published by Pacific Press
Publishing Association, Andrews University Press,
Casa Publicadora Brasileira, and TEACH Services,
Inc. (coincidentally owned by another former Port
Charlotte SDA Church member.) One of his
books is a collection of essays written for Cross
Currents, the previous name for the church
newsletter. His editorials were titled "Views from
the Pew." Floyd selected and collected many of
those essays to publish as a collection with the
same name. While visiting with his wife, Betty, in
Loma Linda, I obtained the book, as well as her
permission to reprint some of Floyd's writings.
This month we focus on education, which was
Floyd's passion. In fact, he literally wrote the
book on the history of Seventh-day Adventist
education. We were abundantly blessed to have
this highly respected man serve as our school
board chairman, and spearhead the educational
endowment fund.
years. Betty still considers this her home church.
An Esteemed Educator's Thoughts about PCAS
Give Me Oil
July 2002

BY FLOYD GREENLEAF
REPRINTED WITH PERMISSION

It will not take long for readers of this issue of

Cross Currents to realize that this month’s paper
is devoted to education at Port Charlotte
Adventist School. As this issue took shape it
became obvious that the school and student
activities were the focus of our interests. We
decided that perhaps it was time for us to
promote the stye of education that students
receive at our school.
And old cliché says that if you think that
education is expensive, try ignorance. While that
is true, we do not think that parents in the Port
Charlotte Church need to be reminded that their
children need to go to school. They already know
that. Perhaps what has been less convincing is
the need to send them to our church school.
We have just returned from a trip that too us to
Adventist schools in several countries of Asia.
One afternoon in Columbo, Sri Lanka, I talked
with the director of education for the local
mission and three of his colleagues who had
been or were still involved in education. One of
them commented that even though the country
is very poor, non-Adventist parents will scrimp
and save to send their children to Adventist
schools. I wanted to know why. Well, he said, they

appreciate the values and the
discipline they receive at Adventist
schools.
The next morning we had a chance
to see what he meant. We drove
over several miles of city streets,
some of them unpaved, and
through housing areas that were
poor even by local standards,
making our way through crowds of
uniformed children walking to
school. Most of them were going to
public schools, but when we finally
reached the school that was on our
itinerary, we saw that about a
thousand of them were attending
an Adventist institution.

A U G U S T 2 0 2 3
I S S U E 7
It was true that only a smattering of the students
were from Adventist homes. A few more were
Christian. Perhaps a Muslim or two were in the
group, and some students probably had parents
who claimed no persuasion, but the
overwhelming majority was Buddhist. They had all
gathered in the open courtyard for their morning
assembly. They sang some Christian songs, led by
a couple of girls about fourteen years old and a
teacher who strummed a guitar. “Give me oil in
my lamp, keep me burning,” they sang. They
prayed. And then those thousand students began
their classes. It was clear that they were glad to
be where they were.
I watched all of the proceedings, drenched in
perspiration. Sri Lanka is about seven degrees
north of the equator. The land steams much of
the time. There is no air conditioning in the
classrooms. Conditions are crowded.
They scrimp and save because they appreciate
the values and discipline of our school, he had
told me the day before. There was a waiting
list. There isn’t room for all who want to
come. That little kid near the front, sweat
rolling down his face, belting out
the words, “Give me oil…keep me
burning,” I wonder what he really
thinks of Buddha and what he
tells his parents about Jesus
when he goes back home every
day. It must be good. There must
be a difference from what he
would learn elsewhere. They
keep scrimping and saving and
sending him.
Read the articles in this Cross
Currents [Fresh Start]. Think about
the values that PCAS stands for. It
may take some scrimping and
saving, but school begins next
month and there is no better place
for your children to be than Port
Charlotte Seventh-day Adventist
School. If you doubt that, ask
countless Buddhist parents who
also scrimp and save for the
chance, some of whom are still on
the waiting list.

the Florida Conference Vice-
President for Pastoral
his role. Our church
recognizes the significance of
nurturing and supporting their
new spiritual leader as he
embarks on his journey of
guiding and shepherding the
church.
In his inaugural sermon,
Pastor Gavin chose to draw
inspiration from the timeless
words of Psalm 23. Quoting a
poignant verse, he reminded

the congregation, "It’s when
you walk through the valley of
the shadow of death that your
character is revealed." With
these profound words, he
emphasized the
transformative power of
navigating life's challenges
and trials, reassuring the
congregation that even in the
darkest moments, their faith
can shine through.
Pastor Gavin brings a desire to
love our church members, and
a fresh sense of enthusiasm to
his pastoral duties. His
dedication to nurturing
spiritual growth and fostering
a loving community is evident.
As our church embarks on this
new chapter, we are eager to
witness the growth and
blessings that will unfold
under his leadership.
Together, we stand ready to
support, learn, and grow
alongside our new associate
pastor, knowing that with
patience, acceptance, and
faith, we can create a thriving
The Good Shepherd
Revival
BY LAURA DANCEK
There was plenty of praying, preaching, singing, and sharing happening during the
four-part revival series, brought to us by Go There4, held on July 26-29. It was
wonderful to see some church members who have been missed. The meetings blessed
us as speakers, Kani Washington and Tanner Maasdorp, challenged us to go deeper in
our love relationship with Christ, the Good Shepherd. These young adults, from the
Bradenton area, have formed a Bible-based evangelism ministry and we are delighted
to have them on our campus. This was the first of many planned connections for the
next year with the Go There4 team. They will be with us next for an evangelism
A Stellar VBS
BY DONNA JUDY
The week of July 17-21 found our church alive with our yearly VBS program. The theme
of “Stellar, Shining Jesus Light”, had a backdrop of space, with astronauts and a lunar
launcher.
Each night children learned through teaching, hands on science gizmos, Bible stories
and games, how they can help “shine Jesus light” when people don’t get along, when life
feels dark, when life is good, when people are sad, and when people need help. A
nightly snack along with completing their take home Bible book completed the
activities.
Miss Lyam, along with her teen helpers had an experiment demonstrating these life
situations each night.
There was creativity from our teachers in all areas. laughter, singing, completion for the
best rooms, and a rocket launching are memories of this year. “The World” mascot sang
with the children several nights and on Sabbath morning as we shared with our church
family.
A total of 57 children attended this years VBS, 16 teen volunteers and 29 adult
volunteers rounded out our nightly activities . Many others assisted with donations,
hours of preparation of backdrop, props and set up of the rooms. A big thank you to all
of them. God blessed us abundantly.

Business
Meeting
U P D A T E S O N O U R
P R O G R E S S A N D
B U D G E T
BY LAURA DANCEK
The church business
meeting was held on July
9 to discuss various
updates and decisions
related to the church and
school.
SCHOOL
Principal Al Cruz provided
a report on the school's
progress, highlighting
Diane Sedgwick's efforts
in managing insurance
and construction matters.
The school has
undergone restoration,
and the gymnasium has
been completed with the
installation of four new
AC units at a cost of
approximately $35,000.
One significant
improvement in the
school is the addition of
an extra door in the pre-K
and K classrooms. This
will allow one teacher to
supervise the students
while the other uses the
restroom.
It was noted that some
teachers and students will
not be returning for the
upcoming year to elevate

A U G U S T 2 0 2 3
I S S U E 7
the spiritual atmosphere. Five new teachers
have been hired. Enrollment numbers were
shared, indicating that the school has
surpassed its budget target of 90 students. At
the time of the meeting, 94 students were
enrolled, with pre-K, 1st, 2nd, 7th, and 8th
grades at full capacity with waiting lists for
these grades.
New chairs are being ordered for the
gymnasium. The previous chairs were heavy
and posed a risk of damaging the floor. The
new chairs, which can hold up to 600 lbs.
each, will be acquired in about a month. The
old chairs will be donated.
It was emphasized that the primary purpose
of the school and church is to win souls for
Christ. Additionally, it was mentioned that
students in 10th grade have the opportunity
to enroll in dual enrollment programs and
take college classes in collaboration with
another academy.
RESTORATION
Church administrator, Diane Sedgwick,
provided an update on the restoration efforts
for the school and church buildings. The 2021
wind claim for all three roofs amounted to
$775,000, and insurance coverage accounted
for most of the expenses. The bill from Canco,
the contractors, for the church restoration
was $771,000, which has been fully paid off.
Funding for the payment came from various
sources, including the family resource center,
depreciation, and conference funds.
Further restoration work includes the
installation of lampposts on July 24 and the
arrival of a new organ, for which half of the
payment has been made. Soffits, fascia, and
gutters have been completed, and an
insurance reimbursement of $200,000 is
expected.
A supplemental request of $560,000 for
school and church items has been approved,
ensuring additional funds for the efforts. The
church pews, which were damaged by rain,
will be replaced by the insurance company.
The plan is to donate the old pews to other
churches in need, while the new ones will
maintain a similar look and color.

A U G U S T 2 0 2 3
I S S U E 7
The meeting discussed the community service
building, and it was confirmed that the
general contractor (GC) has agreed to keep
the permit for us. Progress has been made in
removing walls, and the necessary permits
are still valid.
Phil McGill, an electrician, proposed a project
to upgrade the lighting system to LED and
replace missing lights. The estimated cost for
this project is $21,000. Additionally, the AV
team is looking to acquire a new camera.
Plans are also underway to replace the old air
conditioners on the premises.
The meeting addressed concerns regarding a
sulfur sewer smell within the church and
school. Efforts were made to locate the
source of the odor, including calling in
plumbers and a cleanup team to pump out
holding stations. While the source has not yet
been found, this is something we will continue
to investigate.
Signage improvements were discussed, and it
was decided that all three signs would be
done at a cost of $20,000. Insurance coverage
will be sought for reimbursement after the
payment is made.
The pastor acknowledged the loudness during
the services from children too young to sit
quietly. The mothers' room was serving as a
storage area because, through the restoration
process, we have juggled items, moving them
all over campus. Plans are to make the room
available to young families again as soon as
possible. A survey about hearing is being
conducted to explore the possibility of
installing a hearing loop system in the
sanctuary, connecting to the AV booth and
facilitating the use of hearing aids with t-coils.
FINANCIAL
Church treasurer, Lynne Schmitz provided an
update on financial matters, including
payments to contractors and insurance
claims. The board previously approved the
use of certificates of deposit (CDs) to earn
interest, with $1,600 earned per CD in the first
six months and $900 in the last three months.
Lynne has been actively managing the
church's finances, comparing rates across
different banks.
The annual tithe is estimated to be $650,000,
and the discussion highlighted the
importance of intelligent giving and
understanding the allocation of offering
dollars.
Budget-related matters were addressed. After
much discussion, there was a motion made
and voted on to remove $8400 from the
annual combined budget, because it was
suggested that individuals would be willing to
give directly for that need in order to keep a
hired organist/pianist.

The absence of an evangelism budget was
noted. However, disbursements from the
conference, amounting to $6,000, have been
received for local evangelism and we currently
have another $11,000 in that account. The
services of GoThere4, an organization
committed to evangelism, have been hired for
one year. Their approach includes a master
plan of evangelism. The initial revival series at
the end of July is designed to bring back
former members, followed by training
initiatives and events such as a basketball
tournament to engage people with the
church.
less if we do it ourselves.
Volunteers will be involved in various tasks,
such as drywall work, bathroom renovations,
and painting. The building permit timeline
was clarified, and six-month extensions will be
granted after each inspection.
The business meeting began at 10 a.m. and
concluded at noon, covering a range of topics
related to the church and school operations.
The meeting concluded with discussions on
the restoration of the community services
building. The decision was made to undertake
the work ourselves rather than hiring Canco,
which had quoted $193,000. Currently, there
is $70,000 available in a sub-account for this
purpose, but we are able to do it for much
welcome little ones!
In the past several months, our church family
has been blessed with a bundle of joy as we
have witnessed a series of baby dedications.
These precious little ones, entrusted to us by
God, have brought immeasurable joy and hope
to our congregation.
During these heartfelt ceremonies, parents
publicly dedicated themselves to raising their
children in the knowledge and love of Christ. As
a church, we stood together, pledging our
support and prayers for these families as they
embark on this sacred journey of parenthood.
We rejoice in the new lives that grace our midst
and extend our love and blessings to each
family. These baby dedications serve as a
reminder of God's faithfulness and the
importance of nurturing the next generation in
His ways.

Let us continue to uplift these families in
prayer, offering guidance and encouragement
as they raise their children in the nurture and
admonition of the Lord. May these little ones
grow up to know the love of Jesus and become
beacons of light in our world.
Proverbs 22:6 reminds us, "Train up a child in
the way he should go, and when he is old he
will not depart from it." Let us faithfully fulfill
our role as a supportive church family, walking
alongside these families as they embark on this
incredible journey of raising children in the fear
and admonition of the Lord.
As we celebrate the bundle of baby dedications,
let us give thanks to God for these precious
blessings and continue to pray for their growth
and spiritual well-being. May our church family
always be a place of love, support, and
discipleship for each child and their parents.
We look forward to witnessing the beautiful
ways God will work through these young lives
as they grow in His grace.
* We did our best not to miss anyone. If you
On Sunday morning, the Youth Sabbath
School class raised funds toward a 2024
mission trip. Several young people were
out drawing cars into the parking lot and
giving them a good wash. Not only did they
have fun, but the event was a success!
You can contribute to the Youth Ministries
directly by writing it on a tithe envelope or
giving online on our website here.
Sermon Schedule
We express our deepest gratitude and appreciation for the outstanding
work this team did to address the drainage issue at our school.
Children's Story
Your hard work made a remarkable difference in resolving the problem
of pooling water near the classrooms. The installation of the French
drain has proven to be an effective solution, ensuring the safety and
well-being of our students and staff. By redirecting the water away from
the classrooms, you have contributed significantly to creating a more
conducive learning environment. Your efforts will undoubtedly enhance
the educational experience for our students, allowing them to focus on
their studies without any concerns about potential water-related issues.
Thank you, again, for your hard work!
