GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME
BACK TO THE TOUGHSHEET COMMUNITY
STADIUM FOR THE FIRST OF TWO
SUCCESSIVE HOME GAMES THIS WEEK.
A warm welcome to Scott Brown, his staff and
players, and those who have made their way
across Lancashire for tonight’s game.
We have made a very good start to the season and
of course I am very pleased with what I have seen
from the players, but it’s just a start. It has been
important to get off the mark in the manner we
have, and we have three very solid performances
and three clean sheets under our belts.
But I know there is so much more to come from
this team, which is full of potential.
Saturday’s win at Cheltenham Town was a very,
very good performance. The lads had the right
energy and attitude from the get-go and you saw
a lot of the principles we have worked on in preseason
coming to fruition.
We started the game really well and took over
early. We managed to turn our pressure into goals,
which is really important.
Some of the play and inter-changing was
exceptional, which we have worked really hard in
pre-season on, so to see it come off in that way
was excellent.
I thought Dion Charles and Victor Adeyboyejo
were absolutely outstanding throughout. The way
they combined, the way they linked and the way
we played into them was excellent.
The combination for Dion’s goal was outstanding.
When they play like that, they’re a real handful
but there were one or more two moments when
we could have been even more clinical and more
ruthless.
But I’m delighted with those two and with Cameron
Jerome and Dan Nlundulu when they came on.
Some of the connections and combinations around
the box with Carlos Mendes Gomes and Paris
Maghoma show what they’re going to offer us. It’s
an exciting group to work with.
Even in tight positions we managed to break
Cheltenham’s press at will, waited for one of their
players to jump and then exploit the space behind
them.
But as good a performance as that was, we have
put it behind us and placed our focus on tonight’s
match against Fleetwood Town ahead of Saturday’s
home game against Wigan.
Scott will have his players fired up for tonight’s
match and they will tough to break down but I have
every confidence that if we stick to our plan and
show more of what we did on Saturday then we
will get a positive result, which will set us up for the
game against Wigan.
Further down the line, we’ve got the second round
of the Carabao Cup to look forward to which will
allow us to pit out wits against Championship
opponents, Middlesbrough. It will be exciting
challenge for us against a team which has been
really good at the level above and really consistent.
They got into the play-offs last year and Michael
Carrick has had a great start to his managerial
career. They have a team which has a good
reputation of being good on the eye, so it will be a
great test for us and a great test for them as well.
We’re looking forward to that but there’s plenty of
business to take care of in between.
I hope you enjoy tonight’s game and I look forward
to seeing you here again on Saturday.
CLUB NEWS
GEORGE JOHNSTON IS
ALREADY LOOKING TO A
BRIGHTER FUTURE WITH
WANDERERS AFTER SIGNING
A NEW DEAL.
The left-sided defender is set to miss the
duration of the 2022/23 season after suffering
a knee injury in the Whites’ first game of preseason.
But following successful surgery, Jonston is
determined to return better than ever having
committed his long-term future to Wanderers.
“I’m really thankful to the club for looking after me
during this tough time and putting their faith in
me,” said the 24-year-old, who signed a contract
until June, 2026.
“I also believe in myself and believe I’m going to
come back from this injury stronger so hopefully I
can come back and repay that faith.
“The plan is to come back and hit the ground
running and have a strong season next season and
make up for lost time.
“The other lads that have signed new contracts, it’s
good that I’ll be with them for the next few years.”
Johnston, whose previous deal had been
due to expire next summer, made almost 100
appearances for Wanderers in his first two seasons
with the club after signing from Feyenoord.
And the ultra-consistent defender has now
confirmed his place in manager Ian Evatt’s plans
after following Gethin Jones, Kyle Dempsey, Josh
Sheehan and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson in signing new
contracts at the Toughsheet Community Stadium
this summer.
DION CHARLES IS CLOSING IN
ON 100 CAREER LEAGUE GOALS
AFTER HIS LATEST DOUBLE.
The striker needs just eight more to reach
the milestone he has already surpassed in all
competitions.
Charles struck twice to open his account for the
season in Saturday’s win at Cheltenham Town and
needs just one more in a Wanderers’ shirt to equal
his EFL tally of 27 goals with Accrington Stanley.
The Northern Ireland international has scored 31
times in total for the Whites and after becoming
the first Wanderers’ player in 22 years to score 20
goal in a season last season, he is as hungry as
ever for more.
“I always want to go one better, so if I can score 25
this season I’ll be happy. It wasn’t the first season
I’ve scored 20, so hopefully I can go back-toback,”
said Charles, who will have former club
Fleetwood Town in his sights tonight.
MENDES
GOMES
CARLOS MENDES GOMES HAS
COME A LONG WAY IN A RELATIVELY
SHORT SPACE OF TIME AND
HAVING ARRIVED AT WANDERERS
IS HUNGRY TO CONTINUE HIS
JOURNEY, WRITES PETE OLIVER.
Born in Senegal, Mendes Gomes
grew up in Spain where he started his
footballing odyssey. Making it into the
Academy set-up with Atletico Madrid,
he may have forged a career in La Liga.
Instead, his family uprooted again to follow
his father’s work and Mendes Gomes
found himself in Manchester and with his
own prospects on hold.
“When you play Academy football you
never know where you might end up, or
in general with football,” said Mendes
Gomes.
CARLOS MENDES
GOMES IS PROUDLY
“I thought at the time it was a good opportunity
(in Spain) so I didn’t quite understand why I had to
move to a different country to start from scratch.
“I didn’t speak any English and found it really tough
because I didn’t have any contacts over here.
“I found it tough to find a club. I tried everything I
could but in the first year I was a bit demoralised,
so I didn’t play any football. Then the second year
was when my dad and my mum pressured me to
follow my dream.”
That dream was rekindled in the unlikely
surroundings of West Didsbury and Chorlton of
the North-West Counties League where Mendes
Gomes began to play again.
“I signed for them and played for the under-18s
and made the step to the first team,” he explained.
“It was tough at the beginning because I was on
the bench and sometimes not coming on due to
my physicality.
“Everyone knows how rough non-league can be,
so it was pretty tough. But once I got going and
playing I improved in other areas. I had to think
faster and know how to use my body because I
didn’t have the physical aspect other people had.
That helped me massively to be the player I am
today.”
As an 18-year-old Mendes Gomes fianlly managed
to land trials with EFL clubs. One was Derby
County and another, ironically, Wanderers.
At the time nothing materialised for a raw teenager
still physically developing but who was now also
playing for his college team in Manchester, adding
to his game time and building up his fitness in
conjunction with his studies in engineering.
“A guy who was working at the college had
contacts with Morecambe and told them about me
and another guy. They came over to have a look at
us and ended up calling us to go on trial,” added
Mendes Gomes.
That trial lasted six months before the young
forward was offered a first professional contract by
Morecambe in the summer of 2018.
“That was a day of a lot of emotions. All the hard
work and all the work you put in since you were a
kid paid off,” he recalled.
“I knew that was only a start but for me it was a big
achievement for me and my family. It meant a lot
to be given that opportunity and to call myself a
professional footballer.”
Even then it wasn’t plain sailing, but Mendes
Gomes had earned an opportunity he wasn’t about
to give up.
“You can never predict football. My first years were
quite tough. Looking back, the first year coming
from non-league and college football, without any
professional experience, and managing to play 15
(league) games was probably something I should
have been proud of,” he said.
“But at the time I didn’t quite understand it and
wanted to play everything. I think it’s because I was
young and had no knowledge about the game.
“In the second year I found myself in a situation
where I didn’t play any football until the November-
December time when the new manager came in.
And then Covid happened, so I knew the third
12 | The Wanderer
The Wanderer | 13
season was make-or-break to prove myself and
show what I’m capable of.
“The manager, Derek Adams, fair play to him.
He gave me the confidence and that opportunity
I took myself, and the team as well, to get
promotion, which no-one expected.”
In his first season with Morecambe, Mendes
Gomes made a total of 19 appearances without
scoring a goal before managing just two the
season after.
He was finding his feet, though, and in 2020/21
top-scored with 16 goals as the Shrimps won
promotion from League Two alongside Wanderers.
Whites’ boss Ian Evatt was among those to have
Mendes Gomes on his radar, but it was Luton Town
who won the race for his signature.
The 24-year-old describes his move to Kenilworth
Road as a ‘no-brainer’, even if his appearances in
the Championship were sparing.
Mendes Gomes played 14 times for the Hatters
but was happy to return to the North-West for
the chance of more regular action on loan at
Fleetwood Town last season.
“Fleetwood for me was a very good experience,”
said Mendes Gomes ahead of tonight’s reunion
with the side where he topped the scoring charts
last season with nine goals.
“They gave me the opportunity to be back playing,
to be closer to home and everyone treated me
well. Things went pretty well to be honest.”
One of his goals for Fleetwood came against
Wanderers and Evatt finally got his man last month
when Mendes Gomes became one of the Whites’
major summer signings on a three-year deal.
“I knew that my next move was going to be
crucial,” he said. “I wanted to be at a team where
there is ambition and goals that are achievable.
It’s nothing crazy. We’ve got the squad to get
promoted this season. Last year they went really
close to doing that, so hopefully I can help the
team to actually get to that goal.
“I believe I get better day by day. I’m willing to
learn and willing to take in information. The gaffer
is the right person for that and I really believe there
will be a lot of joy here.
“I really love the environment. The love I have been
shown from the fans and how well the group has
taken me. I’m really excited for the season ahead.
There aren’t many clubs where you see a team
where someone can come in and someone can
come out and there’s no difference really.”
Mendes Gomes has so far been eased into his
new side with three appearances off the bench in
Wanderers’ winning start to the season.
But there’s no doubt his ability as an attacking
midfield player, wideman or central striker will be
key to Wanderers’ aspirations this term.
And having made it this far, on and off the pitch, he
plans to make the most of every moment.
“Sometimes when you’re in it you don’t realise
as much as if you’re looking from the outside
in,” Mendes Gomes said. “My family, they always
remind me how blessed I am and how amazing
I am in their eyes. I just believe it’s really good to
be living your dream and not taking anything for
granted.”

In terms of their transfer activity, it was a case of
trying to add to what they’ve got after a strong
January transfer window last season, most notably
adding to their front line with the additions of
Jayden Stockley and Jack Marriott.
Ryan Broom and Danny Mayor joined as attacking
midfield options, tasked with creating those
chances for the marquee men up front. Ryan
Graydon, Adam Montgomery, Harry Wright,
Theo Williams, Sam Fishburn and Finlay Patric
Armstrong were also recruited to strengthen Scott
Brown’s men across the board.
After a 13th position finish last campaign, the
Fleetwood faithful will be hoping those additions
can push Town into the top half of the table and a
potential play-off challenge this time around.
MANAGER – SCOTT
BROWN
A name that the majority of fans
in the UK football scene will be
very familiar with, former Celtic
captain Scott Brown is the man
in the hot seat entrusted with
navigating Fleetwod through
Sky Bet League One.
Racking up almost 800 appearances as a player,
including over 50 for Scotland, Brown will
have gathered an encyclopaedia of footballing
knowledge to aid him in his life as an EFL manager.
Within that time, the bulldog-like midfielder won a
great number of accolades both individually and
as a team with Celtic. Brown was instrumental in
winning 10 SPL titles for the Glasgow giants as well
as 12 domestic trophies in the combination of the
Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup.
In May 2022, following his retirement from playing,
Fleetwood swooped to secure the services of the
Scotsman as their Head Coach to give Brown his
first taste of first team management.
In terms of league position last campaign, the
38-year-old guided the Cod Army to a respectable
13th place finish, staying well clear of any
relegation worries.
An FA Cup run, which outperformed any previous
cup exploits in Fleetwood’s history, was the
most notable part of Fleetwood’s season as they
reached the fifth round of the competition for the
first time since the club was founded.
JOSH VELA
A product of the Wanderers academy
system, Vela will be a player
many of you will have seen ply
his trade at the Toughsheet
Community Stadium.
Originally joining the
Whites in 2002, Vela
went on to make his
debut for the club in
2011. His Wanderers
career spanned 182 games, including
a promotion winning season in 2016-17
when a Bolton side managed by Phil
Parkinson finished runners-up in Sky
Bet League One.
The midfielder’s next move would be
one north of the border to Hibernian in
Scotland. Despite signing a three-year
contract, he would only appear 14 times for the
Edinburgh club before returning to England.
Shrewsbury Town would be his next employers
which would turn out to be a wise investment
from the Shrews. Josh would go on to spend three
seasons in Shropshire and cement his place in the
heart of midfield, optimised by winning the club’s
Player of the Season Award in 2020-21.
His form that season whet the appetite of
Fleetwood who snapped Vela up in the summer
of 2022 and signalled their intent by naming him
captain shortly after joining.
DANNY MAYOR
One of Fleetwood’s newest recruits knows
exactly what it takes to succeed in this division.
Danny Mayor joined the Cod Army this summer
after playing a vital part in guiding Plymouth to
the title last season.
At 32 years of age, Mayor knows the tricks of the
trade and has certainly not lost his attacking flair
throughout the years.
Coming through the ranks at Preston North End,
Mayor made his debut in 2010 and went on to
appear 77 times for the Deepdale club.
The Wanderer | 21
The striker has consistently been
amongst the goals at this level and
above for the best part of the last
five years.
Originally starting out as a youngster at Ipswich,
Marriott was sent out on several loans to give him
that taste of men’s football in non-league and the
lower EFL divisions.
It would at Luton Town where he would find his
feet and more importantly his shooting boots.
He would make an instant impact at Kenilworth
Road, scoring 16 times in his opening season and
scooping the club’s Player of the Season award.
Sheffield Wednesday then signed the winger for
an undisclosed fee but he would make just nine
outings in two seasons at Hillsborough before
finding his footballing home in Bury.
After a season-long loan spell with the Shakers,
Mayor signed permanently in the 2014 season and
would go on to experience the most success of his
career to that date.
His debut season resulted in promotion from
Sky Bet League Two and winning the Player of
the Season Award for the entire league. His final
campaign would also end in promotion with Mayor
being one of the most productive attackers in the
division, again being named in the Team of the
Season.
With ongoing financial difficulties at Bury, Ryan
Lowe became manager of Plymouth Argyle and
didn’t waste any time in taking Mayor with him.
An even better return would follow for
Peterborough United in 2017-18, netting 33 times
in all competitions and winning the golden boot for
the season.
Following the upward trajectory of his career, Jack
signed for Championship side Derby County the
season after and would help the Rams reach the
play-offs in his first year at Pride Park.
A return to previous club Peterborough in 2021
wouldn’t see him quite the same heights as his
prolific first stay.
But Marriott still showed he knew where the net
is and will be satisfied with his impact so far at
Highbury. Having joined halfway through last term,
Marriott bagged eight goals in just 19 appearances
and to help Fleetwood to finish in a comfortable
mid-table position.
Any success the Cod Army have this time round
may well be built around the goal threat of the
pacy forward.
Danny’s Argyle career would follow a similar
pattern to his time at Bury. His fist season in Devon
resulted in promotion and his final outing was
sealing the League One title to send Argyle into the
Championship.
It was only Wanderers who prevented Mayor
completing the double in his final season with the
club thanks to the Whites’ success in the Papa
Johns Trophy.
JACK MARRIOTT
A signing which caught the attention of much
of the EFL, Marriott signed for Fleetwood last
January in a move which many didn’t expect.

The former home of Brentford, famous for
being the only League ground with a pub on
each corner, opened in 1904 and closed in
2020.
The Wanderers visited Griffin Park on 22 occasions
in League and Cup and incredibly managed to
keep a clean sheet only once. That came in a third
round FA Cup tie in January 1975 when a scoreless
draw resulted before Griffin Park’s best attendance
of the season of 12,452. (Picture shows Sam
the replay 2-0 at Burnden Park.
It wasn’t until February
1934 that Bolton first
visited for a second
division encounter, The
Bees running out 3-1
winners, Ray Westwood
on the scoresheet. Both
clubs just missed out on
promotion that season,
finishing third and
fourth, only two clubs
being promoted to the
topflight back then.
The following season both clubs won promotion,
Brentford as champions, each winning their
respective home fixtures and it was to be in the
first division that the Wanderers suffered their
heaviest defeat by 4-0 in December 1935.
Goals from Ray Westwood and George
Hunt secured a 2-2 draw in November 1938,
(Programme pictured) the last visit before the war
and the final first division visit came in November
1946, the Bees winning 1-0 but suffering relegation
that season and not returning to that level until
2021.
The 1980’s saw regular third division encounters
between the sides with Bolton finally securing an
unexpected victory at Griffin Park at the twelfth
attempt on a cold November afternoon in 1986.
(Programme pictured) Not only had they failed to
ever win at the ground, but the Wanderers had
failed to win in any of their previous 28 League
and cup visits to London, which went back to
1978. Goals from Mark Gavin and Steve Thompson
earned a 2-1 success.
October 1989 saw another 2-1 Bolton win thanks
to two goals from David Reeves but that was to
be the last time that the Wanderers returned from
Griffin Park with maximum League points. They
did however manage a League Cup success in
a second-round tie in 1995. Leading 1-0 from
the first leg, Bolton also won the second leg this
time by 3-2 with goals from Mark Patterson, John
McGinlay and Alan Thompson.
behind to level with goals from Adam Le Fondre
and Mark Davies.
A year later Zach Clough scored the last Bolton
goal on the ground when he converted a penalty
(Pictured) in a 3-1 defeat as they completed a full
calendar year without an away win.
The Wanderers last trip was in December 2018,
a goal from current Everton striker Neal Maupay
separating the sides as the team spent Christmas
in the relegation zone from which there proved to
be no escape.
Brentford Community Stadium, one mile from
Griffin Park, opened in September 2020, albeit
without any crowd due to the pandemic and is a
venue that the Wanderers have yet to visit.
level with the best result for the Wanderers being a
2-2 draw in April 2015 when they twice came from

“They have a team which has a good reputation of
Wanderers will play their Carabao Cup
second-round tie at home to Middlesbrough on
Boro’s visit will see a repeat of the 2004 League
Wanderers set-up the re-match by beating Barrow
in round one, with boss Ian Evatt relishing the
Boro boss Michael Carrick at the Toughsheet
“It’s a very good test for where we’re at right now
THE FIRST GOAL OF ZAC ASHWORTH’S CAREER
EARNED WANDERERS A HOME TIE AGAINST
MIDDLESBROUGH IN THE SECOND ROUND
OF THE CARABAO CUP.
Ashworth steered home a superb free-kick just
before the break as the Whites ended Barrow’s
hopes of an upset in the first-round tie.
The on-loan West Bromwich Albion defender
marked his Wanderers’ debut in style by finding the
bottom corner of the net after Cameron Jerome
had been fouled just outside the box.
Ashworth was one of four summer signings to
make a full debut for the Whites, with striker Dan
Nlundulu also starting his first game since turning a
loan spell into a permanent deal.
Nlundulu had an early chance palmed away by
Paul Parman as Ian Evatt’s men made a slick start.
Carlos Mendes Gomes could also have marked his
first start with a goal but couldn’t convert a low
cross from fellow new recruit Paris Maghoma at
the end of a flowing move.
Jack Iredale almost repeated his goal from the
opening-day win over Lincoln when he saw
another effort from a corner blocked.
But Wanderers struggled to turn their superiority
into goals as the visitors threw up a blanked of
black shirts across their penalty area.
Ashworth’s strike proved enough, however, and
Wanderers can now look forward to a visit from
Boro after they knocked out fellow Championship
side Huddersfield in round one.
Ian Evatt: “We shouldn’t take progression for
MAKING AN IMPACT
Over the last week Bolton Wanderers in the
Community have published their Impact for the
past season and year.
The pages are full of facts and figures including the
following:
The charity has engaged with 15,300+ members
of the Bolton community. 13% of participants
registered as having a disability. 33% of
participants identify as female. 21% of participants
are from a BAME background and in 2021/22, a
total social value of £3,960,296.82 was generated
by the projects by Bolton Wanderers in the
Community.
The Charity was also the StreetGames National
Winner of ‘Best Youth Led Activity’ in the
#Inspire2022 awards.
However, behind these headlines are the more
important stories of lives be changes and
transformed. Take a look for yourself on the
Charity’s website where you can read more
and watch videos of the changes people have
made in their own lives through the support and
encouragement of the charity work our Club is
engaged in within Bolton. It really is making an
impact.
In order to achieve all of this your Club’s charity
needs your support to raise vital funds for this
work. This can be through becoming a business
community partner, getting involved in one of our
events and activities or doing something yourself
for the charity, like Sarah Walton.
As a Wanderers fan and running fanatic, on the
9th of August, Sarah ran 33 miles without stopping
around the Toughsheet Community Stadium
to raise money for Bolton Wanderers in the
Community. She chose 33 miles in honour of the
33 people who lost their lives in the Burnden Park
disaster of 1946.
She began at 6am in the morning with community
staff, members of the public and family joining in
throughout the day to give her the encouragement
she deserved.
Sarah has raised £1,250 to date and you can
still donate via her JustGiving page, details of
which can be found on Bolton Wanderers in the
Community’s website.
We want to say a massive thank you to Sarah for
what she has done and the impact that she has
made by raising these vital funds that will go on to
support transforming lives.
Following in Sarah’s footsteps what could you do
to help your Club’s charity. If would you like to
support in any way please contact Fran Austen,
THE BWFCST
OFF & RUNNING FOR ‘23/’24!
The Wanderer | 39
Away We Go! – Great start to the season with
3pts at home on the first day of the ‘23/’24
season, with Jack opening our account within the
first 5 minutes and progress to the next round of
the Carabao Cup after a fairly one-sided game
and hard-earned win on Tuesday.
Four goals for, none against, 3pts and progress in
the cup – all within the space of 4 days! Hopefully
we can also look forward to a positive return from
our first away game of the season on Saturday, with
these notes written before the game.
We have some photos from several of our brilliant
affiliates taken last week, with Matias (BWFC Latam),
Martin & Mick (London Whites) and Paddy (Irish
B TEAM STRIKER
BEN ANDREUCCI
IS LOOKING
FORWARD TO HIS
FIRST CAMPAIGN
WITH THE WHITES
AFTER MAKING AN
IMMEDIATE IMPACT
AT THE CLUB.
The former Leeds United teenager signed
a first professional contract when he joined
Wanderers this summer.
Andreucci is part of a powerful attacking unit in
Matt Craddock’s squad.
And with the goals flowing in pre-season,
Andreucci hopes it bodes well for what’s to come.
“I’ve loved it. The team has hit the ground running
in pre-season and I think we’ve put ourselves
in a good position to start the season,” said the
Scotland youth international.
“Everything we’ve been working on has come off,
so it’s been a good start.
“It’s been good to get off the mark and be ready
for the season and build confidence.
“I think with everyone scoring it’s good for
competition as well and really raised the levels.”
Andreucci, 18, had scored three times in friendlies
ahead of the B team’s final pre-season game
against Huddersfield Town B this afternoon.
That tally had also been matched by striking
colleagues Trevon Bryan and Finn Lockett and
midfielder Arran Pettifer to underline the progress
made by Craddock’s side over the past 12 months.
And with just one defeat in pre-season – a loss
at Warrington Rylands – Andreucci believes
the Whites are well placed to tackle the Central
League and their opener at Preston North End a
week today.
“When I came to the club one of the main things
was the variety of different teams we were going to
play against and the different challenges,” added
the 18-year-old, who helped the Bs win at former
club Leeds at the start of the month.
“I think we’ve had a different challenge in all the
games and it’s important to be able to adapt,
which I think we’ve done and had some good
results.
“I want to win the league. I think we’ve got a strong
team with some good additions. I don’t see why we
can’t win it and then it’s about trying to push the
first team the way they do us with the standards
they set.”
After a false start to their EFL Youth Alliance
campaign, the young Whites made up for lost
time with an impressive 4-1 win in their opening
fixture.
Wanderers’ scheduled curtain-raiser at Stockport
County was postponed due to a water-logged
pitch and played four days later.
Julian Darby’s youngsters headed back to
Carrington and put their first three points on
the board thanks to two goals in each half of an
impressive performance.
Harrison Fleury opened the scoring half an hour in
when he fired home from the edge of the box to
cap a flowing move from back to front.
Sonny Graham then made it 2-0 when he won
possession and advanced into the penalty area
before slotting home.
Wanderers’ third goal also came after Wanderers
won the ball back in the County half and worked
an opening for Yestin Shakespear to slide the ball
home.
And even though Stockport pulled a late goal
back, the result was put beyond any doubt when
Gio Loureiro (pictured) added Wanderers’ fourth
after 75 minutes when pouncing on another
mistake to coolly dummy the keeper and slot
home.
