Kronk tapped to lead WJ Ox Roast parade

“Tracy’s heart has always been with children.” 

That is how Carol Beachy, a member of 

the West Jefferson Ox Roast committee, 

started her speech 

announcing this 

year’s Ox Roast parade 

grand marshal. 

That opening 

line perfectly suits 

honoree Tracy 

Kronk, founder of Sufficient Grace. 

Nearly 12 years ago, Kronk was tutoring 

a young student at Norwood Elementary. 

When she found out he didn’t have much 

food at home, she started putting items in 

his school bag to take home. 

“By the end of the week, I was doing the 

same for a young girl. Within two weeks, it 

was 10 children. In three weeks, it was 17. 

Now, we serve 750 children,” Kronk said. 

Kronk established Sufficient Grace in 

January 2012. Working out of West Jefferson 

United Methodist Church with the help 

of volunteers, she assembles food boxes that 

are delivered to schools for children to take 

home for meals over the weekend. She also 

provides students with basic hygiene items,

sending packages home with elementary 

students and offering choose-what-you-need 

hygiene pantries on site at the middle 

schools and high schools she serves. 

Kronk’s mission covers the following 

school districts and schools in Madison, 

Clark, and Union counties: London, West 

Jefferson, Fairbanks, 

Northeastern, 

Southeastern, 

Monroe Elementary 

in the 

Jonathan Alder 

Local School District, Fairhaven, and Mac- 

A-Cheek Learning Center. 

The numbers are impressive. In the 

2022-23 school year alone, Sufficient Grace 

distributed 93,206 meals and 12,734 hygiene 

items. Since its start in 2012, the organization 

has distributed 853,826 meals 

and is on track to reach the 1 million mark 

in late 2024. 

Kronk is grateful for the tremendous 

amount of support she receives to make it 

all possible. When people ask how they can 

help, she points them in three directions. 

“First, I ask people to pray for our organization,” 

she said.

Madison County clerk of courts resigns 

Renae Zabloudil, clerk of courts for the Madison 

County Common Pleas Court, has resigned. The 

Madison County Republican Central Committee 

(RCC) will meet Sept. 5 to fill the vacancy. 

Zabloudil has relocated outside the county which 

means she can no longer hold an elected position in 

the county. 

“Although Madison County means a great deal 

to me, as I was raised in the county and have lived 

here my entire life, my family and I made the difficult 

decision based on the needs of our family,”

She said she will continue to practice law in the 

area and assist with the transition for the new clerk 

of courts. 

Zabloudil had served as clerk of courts since 

2012. She submitted her resignation on Aug. 13. 

Sixteen months remain on the current term. 

About her time in office, Zabloudil stated in her 

letter of resignation, “I have taken many strides in 

advancing the office’s mission to care, preserve, and 

keep safe the records of the Madison County Common 

Pleas Court and the Twelfth District Court of 

Appeals. I have also aimed to keep the Title Office 

efficient and friendly to the public it serves. I appreciate 

the opportunity to serve you, and I thank you.” 

On Aug. 15, the Madison County commissioners 

appointed Deputy Clerk Erin Bauer to serve as acting 

clerk of courts until the RCC makes a permanent 

appointment. The committee is scheduled to 

meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 5 at the Madison County Engineer’s 

Building, 825 U.S. Route 42, London. The 

meeting is open to the public. 

Anyone interested filling the position is asked to 

reach out to the RCC to make their interest known. 

They can do so in advance by sending an email to

or they can express 

interest in person at the meeting. Candidates can 

provide a resume or letter of interest, though it is

Aqua Ohio Proposes 

Another Rate Increase 

Less than a year after its last rate increase, water utility Aqua Ohio is again 

asking the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) to increase water 

and sewer rates for more than 80,000 of its residential consumers in Ohio. 

If the PUCO approves Aqua’s request, its residential consumers will see 

another increase in their monthly bills from Aqua starting in 2024.

The London Visual Arts Guild is hosting 

an exhibit titled “Life’s Rhythms,” featuring 

the acrylic paintings of Karla Knief Sill. The 

show runs Sept. 1-24 at the London Arts 

Center, 121 E. First St. 

An opening reception is set for Sept. 1, 5- 

8 p.m. Regular gallery hours are: Thursdays 

and Sundays, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; Saturdays, 10 

a.m.-2 p.m. Open studio hours are 4-7 p.m. 

Tuesdays. Admission is free. 

Karla’s paintings are an expression of 

her appreciation for nature. She uses a variety 

of techniques to capture the countryside, 

rivers, plants, birds, and animals. 

She was born and raised in the country 

life and small town settings of Iowa, Indiana, 

and Ohio. Her love for art took off in 

third grade when she won a poster contest. 

She started taking formal art classes in seventh 

and eighth grade and elective high 

school classes in art and design. She obtained 

a bachelor’s degree in art education 

from Eastern Mennonite University in Virginia. 

She taught art at Mechanicsburg 

Schools in Ohio from 1980 to 2012. 

With retirement came a new chapter in 

Karla’s artistic journey. She managed and 

held paint parties in Ohio and Florida 

where she wintered. She also taught summer 

art camps and classes for children 

through the London Visual Arts Guild with 

which she is a lifetime member. 

In 2018, Karla became a full-time resident 

of Punta Gorda, Florida. She also is a 

member of the Punta Gorda Visual Arts 

Guild. Her paintings have been selected for 

inclusion in juried exhibitions at their Visual 

Art Center. 

In addition to the exhibit, Karla will hold 

a “Coffee, Conversation, and Demonstration” 

focusing on painting techniques on 

Sept. 9, 10-11:30 a.m., at the London Arts 

Center. Admission is free. 

The exhibit includes a show within a 

show, featuring photography by Jenell 

Shrock. An opening reception for Shrock’s 

show is set for Sept. 17, 2-4 p.m.

in lending a hand are invited to simply show 

up. Groups who want to help are asked to 

make arrangements ahead of time. 

As for what she thinks about being 

named grand marshal for the work she has 

done to serve children, Kronk said, “It’s 

pretty surreal.” 

Originally from New Mexico, she moved 

to West Jefferson 25 years ago. She said it 

took her many years to stop feeling like a 

transplant and start feeling like West Jefferson 

was her home. 

“Sufficient Grace has engrained me in the 

community and other communities and 

given me my own identity. The grand marshal 

honor is another validation that I am 

doing good work,” she said. 

Kronk and her husband, Ty, have been 

married for over 24 years. They have four 

children—Mary, Benjamin, Jacob, and 

Grace—and two grandchildren, Miriam and 

Judah. 

The West Jefferson Ox Roast is set for 

Sept. 2-4 on the Ox Roast grounds at Garrette 

Park in the center of town. The parade 

steps off at noon on Sept. 2.

Queen gains perspective over course of reign 

Hello, my name is Carlee Blackburn, and 

I am your 2022 reigning Miss Ox Roast 

queen. I would like to start off with some 

very important thank-yous. 

Thank you to our former queens director, 

Donna Warner, for the support and kindness 

she showed to me at the beginning of 

this journey. She has been outstanding to 

every one of us. From the moment I met 

Donna, I could understand why so many 

people love her. 

Thank you to Taylor Patterson and 

Mardi Bartholomew, our new directors, for 

being the coolest directors we could imagine. 

Because both have been here before, they 

taught me many things. I am beyond grateful 

my name follows theirs in the legacy of 

queens. 

Thank you to the Ox Roast committee 

for their boundless support, trust that we 

will do a good job representing our beautiful 

little village, and resources to make the 

queens’ luncheon possible. 

To the Gantner family, I give my biggest 

thank-yous. Thank you to Sam for carrying 

our stuff—door prizes, gift bags, crown boxes, 

and more—back and forth between luncheon

truck and for pulling the float at Baltimore 

before the tire blew. 

A special thank-you to Tasha Gantner, 

specifically. At Dalton Holidays, I saw a girl 

at the table across from us whose mom was 

fixing her crown and dress. I smiled, wondering 

if she realized how lucky she is for 

that little moment, and I felt a little sad I 

didn’t have that. Then, I looked across the 

room and saw Tasha, and I felt comforted 

knowing she would do the same for me 

when I needed it. 

The last month is one of the hardest 

months I’ve experienced. Tasha checked on 

me probably more than anyone, not because 

she had to but because she wanted to. Tasha 

is the kind of mom and grown up I want to 

be. She made it a priority to get us Starbucks, 

and she put up with me all year, even 

when I lost my phone at a festival and we 

had already started to drive home. Tasha, I 

truly will never forget you. 

Thank you to my grandma for fixing my 

crown a million times, including testing 10 

different ways to make it comfortable and 

supergluing a million little gems back on. 

Thank you for dealing with my attitude 

when I didn’t want to get up in the early 

mornings. Thank you to my Papaw for 

telling me how beautiful I looked when I 

walked out the door every morning. To both 

of my grandparents, thank you for watching 

my dogs while I was gone. 

Now, onto my court. 

I’ve always had a deep love for kids. At 

parties, get-togethers, and holidays, I still 

sit myself at the kids’ table. I thought my 

connection with kids couldn’t get much 

stronger, but the girls on the court showed 

me I had so much more love to give. I really 

think these girls were destined to teach me 

something—to heal the little girl in me 

through loving them and watching them experience 

a dream I had as a little girl. 

I’m very appreciative of my attendants, 

with whom I’ve spent almost every weekend 

of this past year. 

Sarah, thank you for always supporting 

me and hyping me up. You were kind to me 

from the first day at photos in the park. You 

talked to me like I was a friend and made 

me feel comfortable when inside I was freaking 

out. You were never shy to talk to people 

or ask for photos which was something that 

took me a minute to get the hang of. I admire 

you for that. 

Nancy, thank you for offering a friendship 

I’ve wanted and needed my whole life. 

You are the definition of a beautiful person. 

Your are incredibly kind and have a heart 

of gold. They don’t make them like you anymore. 

I could rant to you endlessly, and you 

would listen without a complaint. I am very 

indecisive and I’ve never been good at picking 

my favorite anything, but I know for 

sure Nancy is one of my favorite people. 

As for my last words as queen, I have to 

say, being crowned has been a huge plot 

twist in my life. At the time, I was the kind 

of person who wished I could see my life as 

a book and sneak to the last few pages to 

make sure I turned out all right, that I made 

all the right choices. My time as queen has 

shown me I need to stop wanting to be the 

person I already am. Everyone is capable of 

creating the life we can’t stop thinking 

about. Tomorrow is a direct result of what 

you choose to do today, so choose to make 

your dreams a reality. The day I was 

crowned, the dream I had chased as a little 

girl was suddenly chasing me back. 

Some memories never leave you. This 

year has been that for me. Though I experienced 

loss, heartbreak, and so many feelings 

this year, the people surrounding me still 

made it the best one yet. 

I found that traveling and meeting 

queens from across Ohio brings me the 

peace I crave in this chaotic world. I was 

happy anywhere I saw crowns and sashes. 

There is comfort in being surrounded by 

beautiful faces and beautiful minds. Around 

the people I met this year, I never had to 

work hard to be happy. We get so worried 

about being pretty for these things that we 

don’t praise ourselves enough for what got 

us here: being pretty strong, pretty kind, 

pretty funny, and pretty smart. 

Through the experience of being the Ox 

Roast queen, I made a promise to myself to 

continue to know my own worth, praise my 

own existence, validate my own journey, 

speak my own truth, experience my own 

love, enjoy my own company, and extend my 

own energy. This is the beginning of falling 

in love with being alive. By loving life, life 

will love me back. Happiness is not about 

fulfilling every pleasure or getting every 

outcome you desire. Happiness is being able

to enjoy life with a peaceful mind that is not 

constantly craving more. It is the inner 

peace that comes with embracing change. 

With this, I’d like to share seven pieces of 

advice I’ve picked up through my reign. 

1. You’ll never actually know what people 

think of you, so assume it’s lovely. 

2. Love others so much they wonder why. 

3. If you see something beautiful in 

someone, tell them, even if they are 

strangers. Compliments from strangers are 

so important. 

4. Your flaws will always be someone 

else’s desire. While you admire the woman 

across the room, to her, you are the woman 

across the room. 

5. Speak to everyone today as if they will 

be gone tomorrow, so that you would be ok 

with the last thing you said to them. 

6. Another woman’s beauty does not 

mean an absence of your own. You are not 

pretty like her. You are pretty like you. The 

ability to admire beauty in someone else is 

a reflection of your own. 

7. Never regret. If it’s good, it’s wonderful. 

If it’s bad, it’s an experience. 

Between my hello and goodbye as queen, 

there has been so much joy, so much love, 

and so much learned. I’ll end with a quote 

from Winnie the Pooh: “How lucky I am to 

have something that makes saying goodbye 

so hard.” For the last time, I am and forever 

will be your 2022-2023 West Jefferson Ox 

Roast queen.

GOLDING 

Peter Joseph Golding, 60, of London, 

Ohio, died on Aug. 15, 2023, in his residence. 

Born on Sept. 6, 1962, in Niagara 

Falls, New York, he was a son of Robert 

William Golding Sr. and Carol Marie (Buttery) 

Golding. 

Peter received an automotive degree 

from Central Texas College and went on to 

spend his career working in automotive mechanics. 

He was a beloved employee of 

Neovia Logistics in West Jefferson, Ohio. 

His passions included watching Michigan 

and Pittsburgh Steelers football, and WWE 

wrestling. He also enjoyed listening to classic 

70s and 80s music and was a member of 

the Catholic faith. 

He is survived by: his father, Robert 

William Golding Sr. of Copperas Cove, 

Texas; siblings, Clara Marie (Michael) Golding-Kent 

of London, Ohio, Marylouise Golding 

and Angela Darlene Golding, both of 

Copperas Cove, Texas, Robert William 

(Tawana) Golding Jr. of Washington Court 

House, Ohio; aunts and uncles, Gloria 

Steele of Copperas Cove, Texas, Darlene 

(Raymond) Humphrey of Lancaster, New

Nancy Lee Gross, 82, of London, Ohio, 

formerly of Johnson Creek, Wisconsin, died 

on Aug. 18, 2023, in the Bluebird Retirement 

Community. Born on May 21, 1941, in 

Indianapolis, Indiana, she was a daughter 

of Marie (Landrey) and Henry Bayer.

had worked as a nursing assistant after 

decades of staying home and raising her 

family and managing the daily operations of 

the family beef farm.

Creek, Wisconsin.

KAVY 

Stanley Joseph Kavy Jr., 74, of London, 

Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on Aug. 18, 

2023, at Madison Health Hospital. Stanley 

was born on May 27, 1949, in Dayton, Ohio, 

the son of Stanley Joseph Sr. and Ida Marie 

(Poplis) Kavy. 

Stanley was part of four generations of 

Buckeyes and a proud alumni of The Ohio 

State University. After 40 plus years, he 

was still actively working as a farm manager 

and appraiser. Family was Stan’s number 

one priority, and he enjoyed bragging 

about all his grandchildren. He was their 

biggest supporter. Whether it was a sporting 

or academic event, he wouldn’t miss it. 

It was said that he loved anything outdoors, 

including camping, fishing, hunting, and 

watching birds come up to his many bird 

feeders. 

Stan had a true calling to be involved in 

his community. He served on London City 

Council and the London Board of Public 

Utilities. He was a long-time coach for the 

London Area Baseball Council and was active 

at St. Patrick’s Church in London 

where he had become a lifetime member of 

the Knights of Columbus. 

Stanley is survived by: his loving wife of 

54 years, Diana Sue (Grusenmeyer) Kavy; 

children, Greg Kavy, Jennifer (Collin) Abels, 

and Melissa (John) Bryant; grandchildren, 

Gage Kavy, Ryleigh Bexfield, Ashton Hawk- 

Kavy, Taylor Bryant, Hunter Kavy, Mya 

Bryant, Brianna Abels, Allyson Abels, Brock 

Bryant, and Katelyn Abels; sister, Christina 

Kavy; numerous nieces, nephews, brothersin-law, 

and sisters-in-law; special “daughters,” 

Stacy, Toby, Alyssa, and Julie; special 

“brother, Bruce. 

Stanley was preceded in death by: his 

parents; son, Mark Kavy; and brother,: John 

Kavy. 

Calling hours took place on Aug. 24 at 

Lynch Family Funeral Home, London. A funeral 

mass was celebrated on Aug. 25 with 

Father Anthony Dinovo officiating.

The dinners include spaghetti with meat sauce,

Master Gardener Training 

A Master Gardener volunteer training is coming up

provides intensive training in horticulture to interested 

individuals who then volunteer their time assisting with

The Madison County Mental Health & Addiction 

Taskforce is hosting an Overdose Awareness Day on 

Aug. 31, 5-7 p.m., in the Madison County Public Health

remember the lives lost due to overdose in Madison 

County. Also planned are a games, resource tables, a 

Kona Ice truck, Naloxone (Narcan) training every 30 

minutes, and free hot dogs, chips, and cookies. 

Fish Fries in West Jefferson 

American Legion Post 201, 9701 W. Broad St., West 

Jefferson, is hosting fish fries from 4 to 7 p.m. the first 

and third Fridays of each month through Oct. 20. Items 

available for donation include fish and fries, fish sandwiches,

help veterans and Buckeye Boys State and Girls

Back to school 

Billy Martin (left), manager of American

to fill backpacks with school 

supplies to distribute to nearly 100

“This was quite a humbling experience, 

to see the smiles on the kids’ faces and 

to know some of the financial burden 

has been lifted off the parents,” Martin 

said. “It has been an honor to team up
