Morning Briefing
by Oliver Merlin,
Managing Director of IFA
Management
Forget manic Monday, it's mechanic
Monday for day four of IFA!
Good morning IFA enthusiasts, rise and
shine for day four! For those of you who
are joining us for the first time today,
welcome! If the past few days have
been any indication, we're in for another
exhilarating ride today. The weekend
was a tech lover's dream come true,
with every corner of the Messe Berlin
echoing with innovation, chatter, and
the unmistakable hum of excitement.
The Sustainability Village, where the
future of eco-friendly tech was on full
display, was a particular highlight.
For those of you who might've missed
it, the Global Markets area opened its
doors yesterday, unveiling a world of
technological marvels. If you haven't
wandered its aisles yet, you'll want to
put that at the top of your list for today.
If you're looking for a conference to
attend, you might want to start with
Babbel's Co-founder Thomas Hall on
the IFA Next stage with his conference
on Babbel's expansion into the US at
10:45 a.m. And if you're one to keep an
eye on innovation, carve out some time
at 4:15 p.m. for the Pitch battle finale.
This is where the future of startups is
being decided! Over in the Sustainability
Village, Uwe Schulte is gearing up
to unravel the complexities of global
supply chains and their sustainable
future at 11:00 a.m. And for those with
a keen interest in the European Green
Deal, Paolo Falcioni's 11:30 a.m. session
is where you'll want to be. E-waste, a
pressing concern for our industry, gets
its spotlight at noon with Jens von
Wedel leading the charge.
Navigating IFA can be a whirlwind, so
don't forget that if you ever feel the need
to catch your breath, our outdoor coworking
spaces are your haven. Perfect
for a moment of respite, a quick email
check, or just to take in some Berlin sun.
From the tech aficionados to the firsttime
attendees, I'd like to thank every
single one of you for making IFA 2023
the success that it is. Your passion,
questions, and boundless enthusiasm
are what make this event truly special.
So, let's dive into day four with the same
zest and zeal, making it another day for
the books. Can't wait to see you around,
share some tech stories, and perhaps
even share a laugh or two. Here's to
another day of discovery and business.
Happy exploring!
Now, if robots, automation, and the
future of tech tickle your fancy, you're in
for a treat! The world's leading robotics
companies are showcasing their latest
innovations at the "House of Robots".
Get up close and personal with cuttingedge
robots like Desdemona, Mirokaï,
RoboSphere, and the robotic dog, Spot.
Dive deep into the robot revolution and
explore how automation is reshaping
our lives, both at home and at work.
Kuvings' juicing revolution:
Beyond extraction
In a world increasingly leaning towards health and wellness,
Kuvings is showcasing two innovative juicers at IFA this
year. The REVO830, already a sensation since its debut a
year ago, and the AUTO10, both exemplify a commitment
to a healthier, more efficient juicing experience.
Kuvings, a brand synonymous with
health and innovation, presents two
unique juicers: the REVO830 and
the AUTO10. Proudly made in Korea,
these products are not just about
extracting juice; they represent
Kuvings' dedication to enhancing the
overall juicing experience.
The REVO830, which impressively
accounts for 70% of Kuvings' sales
since its launch a year ago, boasts a
dual feed chute design. This unique
feature caters to both whole and
elongated ingredients, making it
particularly optimised for vegetables
like carrots and celery. Its standout
smart auto-cutting technology
adjusts the juicing speed based on the
ingredient, ensuring an optimal juice
texture every time. Moreover, its lowspeed
mastication technique gently
presses the ingredients, preserving
their nutrients and enhancing their
taste. To make cleaning easier for
users, the REVO830 simplifies the
process with a special brush. The
juicer also includes a special filter
for crafting frozen ice creams and
sorbets.
On the other side, the AUTO10
is designed for convenience and
efficiency. This juicer allows users to
insert whole fruits and vegetables
without any prior preparation other
than washing them. Its defining
feature, the 3,000 cc hopper, is one
of the largest on the market. Paired
with Kuvings' specialised motor
technology, it promises a seamless
AUTO10
juicing experience. The motor, crafted
in Kuvings' own factory in Korea,
underscores the brand's commitment
to quality and performance. The
AUTO10 also has a manual reverse
rotation feature to ensures smooth
operation.
Available in three sleek colors: black,
white, and red—with black being a
global favourite—the REVO830 and
AUTO10 continue to generate buzz.
As the discourse around health and
nutrition intensifies, Kuvings' offerings
stand as a testament to the brand's
vision for the future of juicing
THREAD
PULLS
IT ALL
TOGETHER
AT EXPERT
TALKS
Today at the EXPERT TALKS stage in
Hall 13 at IFA Global Markets, visitors
can learn more about Thread, a wireless
protocol specifically built for IoT devices.
It’s designed to make devices work faster
with more reliability and less power
usage while communicating with other
devices.
In this presentation, Jorg Kennis,
Marketing Commercial & Smart
Buildings at Thread Group, will explain
what Thread is, explore some of its
technical aspects, and share how
it works with building and home
automation standards.
Unlike some other low-powered
smart home protocols, Thread is
internet protocol (IP)-based, so it can
directly connect to any other IP-based
device, such as smartphones, tablets,
computers, and Wi-Fi routers.
As a low-power, low-bandwidth mesh
networking protocol that uses 802.15.4
radio technology, Thread is similar to
existing smart home protocols, but unlike
it doesn’t need a central hub or bridge.
Thread devices communicate with each
other directly, making Thread faster,
especially over large networks.
With a single IP-based network for
lighting, climate systems, access control,
and other applications, creating smart
homes and smart buildings is made
easier.
Thread is run by a board of directors
including Google, Apple, Amazon,
Samsung SmartThings, Qualcomm, NXP,
Assa Abloy (owners of Yale and August),
Lutron, and others
"Innovative companies bring
sustainability into the heart of
their business"
From left, Helena Stone, Editor-in-Chief of Geek Spin
(moderator); Martina Fondi, Partner & Head of Forestry
at Treedom; Tanja Reilly, Senior Strategic Account
Executive at EcoVadis; Paul Randle, Co-founder at
Sustainable Marketing Compass; and Rika Nakazawa,
Vice President at NTT
"Strategies for Green Economic Growth" might sound like a
contradiction in terms, but the conference session on Saturday
at IFA's Sustainable Forum in Hall 2.2 offered ideas on how to
combine the two.
Treating sustainability as a KPI is one
way to bring it to the centre of an
organisation's thinking according to
Tanja Reilly, Senior Strategic Account
Executive at EcoVadis: "Sustainability
is an investment where you can get
something back—it's an ROI (return on
investment) and it can create value."
In this context, Paul Randle, Co-founder
of Sustainable Marketing Compass,
warned against the temptation to
greenwash: "It's a symptom of how some
companies profit from sustainability.
They are actually viewing it as a
revenue stream." He added: "Innovative
companies bring sustainability into the
heart of their business and redefine
what success is. You have to look
at performance aligned to what the
purpose of your organisation is."
One obstacle to sustainability for
companies can be resistance. Martina
Fondi, Partner & Head of Forestry at
Treedom said: "Sometimes it's just
that companies do not want to change
because change is difficult." Fondi
suggests that her clients do life cycle
assessments (LCAs) to understand
environmental impacts "so they can
learn more about their products and
their processes. This way they can
discover so many things that they can
improve, and also save money".
Breaking down company activities into
bite-size pieces and analysing them
in detail offers room to improve them
and save resources. Sustainability is
also about revising ingrained ideas and
activities, then optimising them, which
can help to cut spending and ultimately
save natural resources
SharkNinja doubles stand size
and launches nine new products at IFA 2023
The company is in very good shape, generating sales of $3.7
billion last year and boasting a CAGR of 20% between 2008
and 2022.
At SharkNinja's press conference
on Thursday ahead of IFA, Michael
Maier, Managing Director DACH, said
that the decision to more than double
the size of its IFA exhibition space
compared to last year was "testimony
to the unprecedented growth and rapid
expansion" of the company.
Key to the consistent growth has been
a focus on new products and "an
obsession with five-star reviews from
consumers", according to Tom Brown,
President of EMEA, who added: "That
means we've succeeded in making their
lives better."
At IFA 2023, SharkNinja is launching
nine products in air frying, outdoor
cooking, cordless vacuuming (including
wet/dry carpet, and spot cleaning),
and hair care. For example, the Ninja
FlexDrawer is an extra-large air fryer
with a capacity of 10.4 litres that can
also be divided into two independent
zones. Outdoors, the Ninja Woodfire
Outdoor Oven is an electric high-heat
unit, a pizza maker, and a barbecue
smoker that is said to give users "brick
oven inspired results".
In vacuuming, the Shark HydroVac is a
three-in-one cordless floor cleaner that
cleans up wet and dry messes at the
same time, with an odour-neutralising
feature to keep smells away. Meanwhile,
the Shark Detect Pro was described as
a "game-changer". Utilising four deepcleaning
technologies, the cordless
cleaner can adapt automatically to
different floor types.
The US company, which debuted on
the NYSE this summer, has also made
an entry into the portable blending
market. Ninja Blast is SharkNinja's firstever
cordless portable blender, ideal for
making smoothies, protein shakes, and
frozen drinks on the move, and powerful
enough to crush ice.
Shark also announced its partnership
with celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton
as Shark Beauty's first-ever global
brand ambassador, while expanding the
division's range of products. Appleton
will work with Shark Beauty to bring the
salon experience to the home, with inperson
brand activations, and social and
digital content on its way
well-being products.
Throughout its long history, Beurer
has become synonymous with health
and well-being, developing an evergrowing
portfolio of related products.
At its press conference on the first day
of IFA 2023, the brand highlighted its
new electric toothbrushes: the TB 30
and the TB 50.
Equipped with oscillating and pulsating
brushing technology, the TB 30
removes plaque and ensures both
clean teeth and healthy gums. With
an integrated 2-minute timer and
powerful battery that allows for
about 20 days of battery life,
the TB 30 offers two cleaning
programs. "Clean" is ideal for
a thorough and complete
cleaning while "Sensitive"
is adapted to gentle, gumfriendly
use.
The TB 50 also uses Beurer's brushing
technology, but in addition to “Clean”
and “Sensitive", users can also select
the “White” program for natural teeth
whitening. To help protect teeth and
gums, the device's LED display tells
users if they are exerting too much
pressure. Additionally, the TB 50 boasts
a battery life of around 45 days.
In addition to its electric toothbrushes,
Beurer is showcasing new styling
products within its MenCare range,
including the MN2X Precision Trimmer
and the MN4X Beard Trimmer. For
the first time, Beurer is also launching
a sustainable product range: Green
Planet, which includes heat pads,
heated overblankets, and heated
underblankets, all top and bottom
fabrics containing between 80 to 100%
recycled materials
I NEWS I
The secret to successful startup
collaborations at IFA 2023
Startups and large corporate companies working together
might seem a bit like David and Goliath—but they often
depend on each other. Corporations can be slower to innovate,
whereas startups are nimble and have developed solutions
that big companies want.
On the first day of the IFA Next
conference programme, there was
a valuable session looking at how
both startups and corporations in the
consumer electronics industry can
unlock synergies to accelerate growth.
A panel of experts talked the audience
through the essentials of making this
relationship work from establishing
meaningful connections, to leveraging
each other's strengths.
Alexandra Renner, Startup Lead - BMW
Startup Garage, said, "For us, one of the
main benefits is the speed. If you were
to develop a solution internally, it would
take much longer." Jara Pascual, Founder
& CEO of Collabwith, a global platform
for collaborations for innovation, added,
"Sometimes it's difficult to create a
Even "green couch potatoes"
Entrepreneur, DAMN Plastic
culture of innovation in an organisation
and bring ideas or projects to life."
Startups can bring something to the
table in this instance. Collaborations can
also save corporations money. Lu Han,
the Open Bosch Programme Director at
Bosch Ventures commented: "We don't
have to develop everything ourselves,
so cost-saving is also a benefit."
From the larger company's side, the
impact of the startup concept needs to
be clear. Renner said: "Why is it worth
it (for us) to take the risk? There should
be a business case and measurable
KPIs you can reach." She added: "You
need a dedicated, motivated business
unit that really needs the solution of the
startup." This requires a little research
and forward planning on the part of the
Victoria Neuhofer, an
entrepreneur and the force
behind Damn Plastic, will
be on the Sustainability
Village stage at 2:00
p.m. today with her tips
on how to take a lead
on environmental issues
"without lifting more than
a finger". Her keynote is
titled "The Power of YOU &
Environmental Leadership
from the C-Suite" and we
caught up with her to give
you a sneak peek.
What will you focus on this
afternoon?
I will be emphasising the fusion of
individual choices and executive
smaller party in order to ensure they
hit the right target partner to secure
investment, and possibly even a buyout
at a later stage
leadership in driving sustainability
and also explaining why I founded
Damn Plastic. Passive sustainability
efforts are underestimated, so a
primary highlight will be the concept
of the "green couch potato" and how
making small, conscious purchasing
decisions can lead to transformative
environmental change. I will also
look at which strategies cost no
money but can have a huge impact
on the environment.
Why should senior management
lead on sustainability?
Senior managers have a unique
position of influence and their
decisions set the course for the
entire organisation. By leading
on sustainability, they not only
shape the environmental footprint
of their company but also send a
powerful message to employees,
stakeholders, and competitors.
Such leadership establishes a
standard for responsible business,
demonstrating that profitability
and sustainability aren't mutually
exclusive.
Who is your target audience?
Decision-makers in businesses:
CEOs, managers, and other C-suite
executives. However, it's also for
professionals across all levels
and sectors who understand the
importance of sustainability and
want to play their part, whether
through active participation
or passive efforts like mindful
consumption.
What do you hope attendees will
take away?
I want them to recognise that
every decision, whether made in
a boardroom or a shopping aisle,
has environmental repercussions.
My goal is for them to see that,
through conscious choices, they can
become champions of sustainability.
One needn't make grand gestures
to make a grand impact. I also want
to emphasise that plastic is not the
enemy, under my motto: it's not
about damn plastic, it's about damn
people
HONOR V PURSE:
DESIGNING THE
FUTURE
HONOR CEO unveils new
ultra-thin foldable Magic V2
HONOR Chief Executive Officer George Zhao revealed
the brand's ultra-slim flagship foldable smartphone,
the HONOR Magic V2, at the company's IFA 2023
Opening Keynote
After launching its first foldable smartphone, the HONOR
Magic V, last year, the company has been busy developing
an even better, thinner, lighter, and more powerful version.
In line with HONOR's efforts
to transform the way people
communicate and express themselves
through technology, specifically with
foldable smartphones, HONOR CEO
George Zhao took the main stage at
IFA 2023 for his "Unfold Tomorrow"
keynote speech, where he unveiled
the brand's latest and most advanced
book-style foldable phone to a global
audience: the HONOR Magic V2.
FLAGSHIP FOLDABLE
After entering the foldable phone
market in 2022 with the Magic
V, HONOR has endeavoured to
spearhead foldable smartphone
innovation and has achieved
remarkable advancements with
respect to design, functionality, and
durability.
With the new Magic V2, HONOR has
tackled the issue of thickness, and is
now offering users what the company
claims to be "the thinnest foldable
smartphone in the world". At just
9.9mm when folded, with one interior
screen and another exterior screen
the HONOR Magic V2 is flatter than
many bar phones. According to Mr
Zhao, the company is taking foldables
into what he called "the millimetre
era."
The Magic V2, which can be folded
out into a book format, at just 231g
is also lighter than many traditional
smartphone models. To achieve this
ultra-thin and light design, the CEO
said the company used “proprietary
steel” and a specially developed
titanium hinge, breakthroughs that
arrived after an extensive design
process. As Mr Zhao stated in an
exclusive IFA International interview,
"we had to completely overhaul the
design multiple times, each time
experimenting with new materials
and manufacturing processes, before
finally arriving at where we are today."
BATTERY LIFE
Not only is the HONOR Magic
V2 slim and lightweight, it also
possesses exceptional battery life
with a powerful 5,000mAh battery,
which at just 2.27mm thick is also
astonishingly thin and can fit inside a
credit card holder.
With the HONOR Magic V2, the
brand has demonstrated its design
prowess offering what Zhao termed
its most comprehensive interactive
experience in foldables, allowing for
multitasking, free hovering, and dual
screen handwriting with a stylus.
In summing up the development that
went into HONOR's latest foldable
smartphone and the desire to take
foldable models a step further and
make them mainstream, Mr Zhao
said “HONOR can make it happen”
Hall 6.2 / Stands A103 & A201
In another exclusive announcement,
HONOR's CEO revealed the brand's
other big development, the concept
phone HONOR V Purse. “Not only can
a smart phone help us in our daily life,
it can also be a fashion accessory,”
said Mr Zhao. To this effect, the
HONOR V Purse is a new concept that
reimagines a foldable smartphone as a
wearable purse.
Offering "endless possibilities for style
and self-expression", the HONOR
V Purse transforms the foldable
smartphone into what Zhao called a
phy-gital fashion statement, thanks
to a series of customisable alwayson
displays (AODs) that mimic a
handbag design, including design
elements like chains, feathers and
tassels that react and sway with the
smartphone as it moves. The concept
phone is also compatible with a choice
of interchangeable straps and chains
that clip onto the hinge and allow it to
be worn like an ordinary handbag.
Created with sustainability in
mind, the HONOR V Purse features
sustainably sourced materials while
encouraging users to cut down on
their consumption of fast fashion
thanks to its adaptability. "With our
phone-to-purse concept brought to
life through the HONOR V Purse, we
are exploring sustainable solutions
that leverage emerging foldable
technology to empower creativity
and shape tomorrow's lifestyle," Zhao
asserted.
In parallel, HONOR has teamed up
with fashion and design talents across
its HONOR Talents Global Design
Awards platform, including Burberry
menswear design director Bram Van
Diepen, to create custom AODs for
the device. As a next step, the brand
plans to invite emerging designers and
artists from around the world to come
up with their own designs
Fresco: Cooking up the next
generation of smart kitchens
In today's tech-driven world, the new Kitchen OS by Fresco is
revolutionising the smart kitchen experience.
Fresco's platform connects various
appliances to offer a seamless experience
across devices. Fresco's Chief Product
Officer, Anthony Sullivan, joined us live
on the IFA TechTalk Podcast to tell us
more, in an episode launching later this
year. Here, we share a sneak-peak of
what he had to say in this short extract
released exclusively for IFA International
2023.
"Kitchen OS stands for 'operating system'
which is what we've built for the smart
kitchen," Mr Sullivan told the podcast.
"We are a neutral platform, meaning we
work with all appliance partners. It has
been designed with the industry in mind,
offering appliance partners a plug-andplay
solution. This greatly reduces the
time, complexity, and cost of delivering a
world-class smart appliance experience."
Speaking from the studio, Mr Sullivan
explained how Fresco has built and
designed an experience "not confined
to" the mobile phone. "It can exist on a
website, on a smart screen in an Alexa
app, and it can also be embedded
within an appliance UI," he said. "We've
invested a lot of time thinking about
this because transitioning between
different appliances with varied control
mechanisms can be challenging. Thus,
what we've designed works seamlessly,
even down to the level of a smartwatch."
Another unique benefit of this Fresco
technology is the cooking data that
comes from the platform. "Lastly,
we've partnered with a customer
communication platform that allows
appliance partners to send targeted
marketing, be it emails, push notifications,
or in-app messages," Sullivan explained.
That said, privacy and security concerns
are "paramount", Mr Sullivan assured.
"Partners need to trust that when they
collaborate with Fresco, their concerns
will be respected and addressed," he
says. "We have a full-time head of
security at Fresco, and every aspect of
security is built by design throughout the
platform"
e-Bike Milano: Sharp's vision for the future
of urban commuting
Sharp Consumer Electronics
unveils the e-Bike Milano,
merging sustainability with
technological prowess at IFA
2023. With these advanced
features, the Milano is more
than just an electric bike —
it's a glimpse into the future
of city travel.
The e-Bike Milano also stands out when
it comes to design and functionality,
incorporating a Gates Belt Drive CDN
carbon drive belt which is known for
its durability. The rear-wheel drive is
crafted to handle diverse urban terrains,
and an integrated colour LCD display
offers riders real-time data. Additionally,
its 21-inch aluminum frame is designed
for convenience and makes it easy to
hop on and off.
As sustainability becomes a global
priority, the Milano offers a practical
solution for those seeking ecofriendly
transportation alternatives.
The bike reflects Sharp's vision to
merge environmental considerations
with technological advancements. For
urban dwellers and environmentallyconscious
individuals, it could be a
step towards a cleaner commuting
future.
Confidence is brewing at
Wilfa as CEO Morton Hoff sets
an ambitious growth path
Wilfa CEO Morten Hoff sat down with IFA International in an
exclusive interview at the show. According to Mr Hoff, range
expansion and market expansions will take the company to
one billion Norwegian krona (€90 million) in five years.
Norway's Wilfa, best known for its
coffee machines, is a leader in several
kitchen essentials categories within
the Nordics. The company also has
distribution partners across several
Wilfa CEO Morton Hoff
at the company's stand
at IFA 2023
European markets including Austria,
France, Germany, the Netherlands,
Poland, Spain, Switzerland, and UK, as
well as the United States for its coffee
units.
Powered by a 250W electric motor, the
Milano provides speeds of up to 25
km/h. Its five adjustable support levels
ensure adaptability to various riding
preferences.
Beyond this, the Milano addresses a
significant concern for many electric
vehicle enthusiasts, battery life, with an
advanced battery system promising up
to 80km.
Ramping up in these markets will be
important for the company in order
to diversify revenue. Mr Hoff told IFA
International: "About 80-90% of our
turnover is in the Nordics. We only hired
an export manager about two years
ago. What we have is a large portfolio of
products that is quite unique and which
separates us from everyone else."
Coffee aficionados across the world
know Wilfa, but the company is looking
to widen its reputation in other areas
On a more technological front, the
Milano's integration with the Sharp
Life App provides users with a range of
features, from monitoring battery status
to security features like its digital lock
and motion alarm.
As the debate around sustainable
solutions gains momentum at IFA 2023,
the e-Bike Milano serves as a tangible
representation of what the future of
urban commuting might entail
Hall 1.2 / Stand 118
through product launches at IFA 2023,
which include the ProBaker Timer and
robot vacuum cleaners. The company
also has strong expertise in heat pumps;
a core segment for the company, and
electric scooters; a relatively new
market.
Wilfa is also stepping up its focus on
sustainability and consumer-centricity.
Packaging is now all FSC-certified
and styrofoam has been removed. The
company currently CO2 compensates
(Scopes 1 and 2) and is looking at
Scope 3 with the aim of being CO2
neutral by 2025. Two years ago, Wilfa
also introduced full five-year guarantees
on its products worldwide to give
consumers more confidence in their
purchases.
All of this will help drive growth. From
€10 million in 1989, Mr Hoff has taken the
business to around €50 million today.
"We plan to reach one billion Norwegian
krona (€90 million) in five years," said
the CEO. "We will do that in two ways:
by expanding into new markets, and by
adding new categories and products"
Loewe unites personalised design and
advanced tech at IFA 2023 with the Iconic TV
fitted with custom optional side inlays in
different colours, materials, and finishes.
In addition to design and customisation,
the Loewe Iconic boasts the brand's
I TRADE TALK I
"It's always fueled by innovation"
MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group at IFA: Sustainability,
innovation, and the omnichannel experience
In an exclusive interview with IFA
International, Dr Karsten Wildberger,
CEO of MediaMarktSaturn Retail
Group, offered a glimpse into the
company's future-focused strategy.
Emphasising sustainability and the
evolving omnichannel landscape,
Dr Wildberger discussed the
transformative role of innovation in
shaping the retail sector.
Dr Karsten
Wildberger
CEO, MediaMarktSaturn
Retail Group
What are MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group's
primary objectives at IFA this year? How
significant is IFA for MediaMarktSaturn Retail
Group in terms of marketing and staying
updated with the latest trends?
IFA is crucial for us for several reasons. Firstly, it's
about meeting all our partners. We had our event
here in Berlin, where we engaged in extensive
discussions from both a group and country
perspective across our 11 countries. Additionally, it's
a source of inspiration as we explore our partners'
presentations, new products, and discussions on
sustainability. It's a vital event for us.
How long are you here, and what's on your
agenda for this year's IFA?
We have a packed schedule for the entire week.
On the side of the German organisation, we
had 20 partners presenting their strategies and
partnerships. Each day has been filled with
discussions, understanding products, and
planning for upcoming events like Black Friday and
Christmas. It's a hands-on experience.
Are there any specific product groups that
particularly interest you this year?
I'm personally keen on how manufacturers are
incorporating sustainability. There are early
indications of AI integration in products, especially
in robotics and autonomous applications.
Additionally, there are some intriguing design
topics. Overall, there's innovation in almost every
product group, and we are approaching it all with
curiosity.
You've touched on this, but what are the major
trends you've observed in the industry and at
this year's IFA?
In the white goods section, like washing
machines, ovens, and fridges, there's a significant
opportunity to align with sustainability goals,
such as consuming less energy and water. The
telecom sector, with gadgets, mobile phones, and
computers, offers fascinating ecosystem linkages.
IF I HAD TO
HIGHLIGHT TWO
TRENDS, THEY
WOULD BE
SUSTAINABILITY
AND THE RISE OF
VR AND AR.
Another emerging area is the VR and AR world,
not just in gaming, but across sectors. The industry
is always driven by innovation. If I had to highlight
two trends, they would be sustainability and the
rise of VR and AR.
Given the emphasis on sustainability this year,
what initiatives does MediaMarktSaturn Retail
Group offer to promote a circular economy?
Sustainability is integral to our business model
and values. We prioritise green energy and energy
conservation. We've introduced a "Better Way"
label to guide customers towards sustainable
products. This label ensures products meet specific
criteria like energy consumption and recyclability.
We've observed a doubling in customer demand
in this area. We lead in trade-ins, recycling, and
offer extensive repair services across Europe.
Our focus extends to logistics and packaging. We
view sustainability as a business opportunity, and
collaborate with our partners on these initiatives
MEDIAMARKTSATURN'S SELL-
BACK INITIATIVE WITH FOXWAY
Partnering with recommerce specialist, Foxway,
MediaMarktSaturn is offering consumers a new
sell-back service for electronics aiming to diminish
e-waste and CO2 emissions. This initiative, a key
component of the "BetterWay" campaign, prioritises
refurbishing over disposal. By 2023, the goal is to
achieve 100% renewable energy usage and double
the sustainable product offerings, underscoring a
dedication to both consumers and the planet
MEDIAMARKTSATURN CEO'S
CONTRACT EXTENDED AHEAD
OF SCHEDULE
In a strategic move, the Supervisory Board
of CECONOMY AG, the parent entity of
MediaMarktSaturn, has announced an early
extension of Dr Karsten Wildberger's Executive
Board contract for an additional five years.
Since taking the helm in August 2021, Dr
Wildberger has been instrumental in steering
MediaMarktSaturn towards a customer-centric
transformation, emphasising digital innovation.
Thomas Dannenfeldt, Chairman of CECONOMY
"All Samsung products will be Wi-Fi
enabled by 2024"
Samsung's Chief Marketing Officer for Europe, Benjamin Braun, spoke to
IFA International about the company's presence at IFA and its vision for
SmartThings
SAMSUNG'S KEY
INNOVATIONS AT
IFA 2023
Benjamin Braun,
Chief Marketing
Officer for Europe
at Samsung,
pictured at the
Samsung stand at
CityCube B
Samsung CMO for Europe Benjamin
Braun highlighted some must-sees
among the 200+ product innovations
on display this year:
• Samsung Neo QLED 8K 98-inch
TV: "It's breathtaking,' Mr Braun said,
adding: "If that's not big enough for
you, we have the MicroLED modular
TV with an even bigger 146-inch
screen."
• The Frame Disney100 Edition: This
exclusive edition of The Frame was
launched to celebrate Disney's 100th
anniversary, featuring 100 pieces of
art from some of Disney's greatest
stories plus a commemorative
platinum bezel with the Disney100
logo.
Speaking from the Samsung
business lounge at Messe
Berlin's CityCube, Mr Braun
gave examples of how the
pioneering technology will
change our lives for the
better.
Samsung introduced SmartThings at
its IFA press conference. Can you tell
us more about it?
We asked people in Europe what they
want next, and 67% of respondents
said that they want their next device
to be connected. This means when
people are looking for appliances,
they are now proactively looking for
the ones that are Wi-Fi enabled. So
last Thursday, we announced that
all Samsung products will be Wi-
Fi enabled by 2024 as part of our
SmartThings strategy - allowing all our
devices to speak to each other.
For example, at home when my
washing machine is finished, I get a
notification on my watch, my phone,
my TV, and even on my Samsung
refrigerator, to take out the laundry and
hang it up. When one of my children
forgets to close the refrigerator door, I
get a notification too.
We can take this another step further
with our open ecosystem which
allows other devices to connect to our
SmartThings platform. For instance,
if I'm waiting for pizza during a family
film night and someone rings my Ring
Video Doorbell, the video feed will
appear on my Samsung TV and I can
use my Samsung remote control like a
microphone to tell the delivery person
"I'm coming".
We have 283 million registered users
already with SmartThings and the
number is growing rapidly.
How is your stand designed to
interact with visitors?
We take IFA visitors on a journey
through different parts of their lives,
through our kitchen, entertainment,
office, and travelling areas. They can
see how all the devices from each zone
can connect through SmartThings,
with demos.
For instance if you're shopping and
unsure what is in your refrigerator,
you can use your phone to see what's
inside. We have also put cameras
inside our ovens that can notify you if
you're about to burn dinner.
What are Samsung's top strategic
priorities for maintaining a
competitive edge on the global
market?
Something that's really important for
us is sustainability. We are putting solar
cells on our TV remote controls, which
will prevent 200 million batteries from
ending up in landfills, and some of our
product components are made from
discarded fishing nets pulled from the
ocean. Also, our AI washing machine
technology measures the amount of
water, detergent, and time needed for
each load, lowering energy usage by
up to 70%.
• The Freestyle 2nd Gen: Live at
its IFA press conference, Samsung
launched its latest portable projector
2nd Gen. "It's ultra-portable. You can
point it up at the ceiling and you
can even take it camping," Mr Braun
said.
• Samsung Gaming Hub: "We've
built our Gaming Hub into our TVs
and into our computer monitors,"
Mr Braun said. "You just need your
wireless Bluetooth gaming controller
to play all Xbox titles, including the
new Starfield."
• Samsung Odyssey OLED G9
Curved Gaming Monitor: This
curved screen has a built-in Gaming
Hub so all users need is a wireless
Bluetooth gaming controller to play.
• EHS Mono R290 heat pump:
Samsung is presenting its latest heat
pumps which Mr Braun says are
"much better for the environment"
than gas alternatives.
I EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW I
Monique
Lempers
Chief Impact Officer,
Fairphone
20 IFA INTERNATIONAL • MONDAY 4 TH SEPTEMBER 2023 www.ifa-berlin.com/content-hub

I EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW I
Fairphone presents its "theory
of change" at IFA 2023
In an exclusive interview with IFA International, Chief Impact Officer
Monique Lempers explains the three pillars that constitute Fairphone's
approach to changing the impact of smartphones
Dutch electronics manufacturer and social enterprise
Fairphone aims to reduce its environmental footprint
and improve the social impact of its devices by
designing long-lasting easy to repair smartphones.
Chief Impact Officer Monique Lempers speaks to
us about Fairphone's latest efforts in sustainability
and how other companies can make an impact. She
also summarises the highlights of her fireside chat on
circular economy, taking place at 12:30 p.m. today at
the Sustainability Forum in Hall 2.2.
Can you tell us what are some
of the ways Fairphone has
integrated sustainability into its
business plan?
We take a holistic approach to
sustainability, meaning a positive
impact on both people and planet.
OUR
“THEORY OF
CHANGE”
CONSISTS OF
THREE
ACTIVITIES:
RAISING
AWARENESS,
SETTING THE
EXAMPLE, AND
CREATING
FOLLOWERS.
Our “theory of change” consists of
three activities: raising awareness,
setting the example, and creating
followers. With that and by
convening key actors, we motivate
the industry to make caring for
people and the planet a standard
part of doing business.
For the rest of the industry, it's time
to move away from wanting to
convince consumers that the next
big thing is always just around
the corner. Our business model
shows that you can stimulate
demand for fairer electronics
by increasing consumer
awareness, and sustainable
supply by improving social and
environmental performance,
while supporting consumers in
changing their behaviour to more
sustainable habits like longevity
and repairability.
How can other companies
support sustainability?
Manufacturers should provide
repair and maintenance
information to everyone in an
easily-accessible manner and free
of charge. Ordering spare parts
should be as easy as buying a new
product, to prevent unnecessary
complicated processes which
could raise the barrier to repair
spare parts. Their prices should be
available from the very beginning
and for several years, not just until
the end of sales. Manufacturers
should also ensure the availability
of software support for at least five
years.
What are you highlighting in your
fireside chat "Circular economy
– starting at design through to
delivery, return and reuse" this
afternoon at IFA 2023?
The fact that you can build a
successful value proposition
around circularity, and how
Fairphone is proof of this.
Fairphone's key mission is to
inspire the industry to become
more responsible. Bringing
products to the market that are
more circular - by focusing on
longevity through repairable
design and long software support
- is what makes us diff erent and
why customers choose to pay a
premium.
Recycling sounds good, but in
reality it's still a bit of a fairy
tale. Only a small percentage
of a handful of materials can be
recovered that way. The increasing
global demand will outweigh the
supply or recycled materials for
decades to come. So our main
focus should be on producing
less and keeping existing devices
and products in use for as long
as possible. Since the livelihood
of millions of people depends on
the mining sector, we also need
to focus on improving working
conditions in these mines
CIRCULAR ECONOMY
– STARTING AT
DESIGN THROUGH TO
DELIVERY, RETURN
AND REUSE
> 12:30 - 1:00 p.m.
CONSUMER
CHOICE
Sustainability is a growing priority for many
consumers, something Monique Lempers
confirms. "Consumers are increasingly
starting to care more about the impact of
their behaviour and the things they use,"
she says. Explaining how Fairphone offers
a direct response to this concern, she adds:
"The Fairphone is a phone for the conscious
consumer - people who care about both the
people and the planet, who want to know
how their phone is made, while also being
able to repair it themselves."
Yet Ms Lempers was quick to point out that
the responsibility for reversing the negative
impact of smartphones on the environment
should be shared among consumers and
the industry. "The responsibility cannot
lie purely with the consumers. When we
started, supply chain sustainability wasn’t a
focus in the industry. By now, we’re seeing
that the conversation has matured and
Fairphone has inspired that. However, there
is still a lot of work to do," she claims.
According to Ms Lempers, the move
towards smartphones that last longer and
can be repaired is inevitable. "Both the
manufacturers and the consumers will have
to champion repairability and longevity,"
she says. "Sooner or later, we will have no
other choice. The rare resources that make
up our electronics are rapidly depleting,
so sustainable design, longevity, re-use,
and recycling will become increasingly
important"
