Members of the new Plain City Music, Arts & Theatre Society board are
excited to present their inaugural season of events and invite the public
to support their efforts to support the arts in Plain City: (front row, from
Deborah Moore, Dennis Graber; (back row) Jennifer Moore, Ryan Gutierrez,
Daniel Rodriguez, Lucas Gutierrez, and Holly Novak.
Plain City now has its own arts
organization.
The Plain City Music, Arts &
Theatre Society (PCMATS) is a registered
non-profit group with a mission
to support and encourage all
forms of art in the community. In its
inaugural season, the organization
is presenting an original musical
and supporting and promoting
events by the Plain City Community
Singers, Re-Markie Bellz handbell
choir, and PC Trinity Theatre.
“We are working at building the
arts because Plain City is growing so
fast,” said Anne Gorman, PCMATS
president and retired choral/musical
director for Jonathan Alder Local
Schools.
The goal, Gorman said, is to not
only support the local artistic efforts
already in action but also nurture
new ventures and new artists and
performers.
“I’m sure there is a lot of untapped talent here,”
she said.
The events lineup for PCMATS’ inaugural season
are as follows:
• Music in the Park—The
Plain City Community
Singers, now in their third
year, will perform a concert
Sept. 10 at 5 p.m. at Pastime
Park, 370 N. Chillicothe
St., Plain City.
Admission is free.
The ensemble features
32 to 40 men and women of
all ages. They rehearse
three times a month, April-December, at
Buckeye Brass & Winds, 202 N. Chillicothe
St., Plain City. Anyone can be part of the
choir. For details, contact Gorman at gormana155@gmail.com.
• “The Picture of Dorian”—This original
musical by Gorman, adapted from Oscar
Wilde, will make its debut Oct. 13-15 at the
Marysville Veterans Memorial Auditorium.
300 S. Jefferson Avenue · Plain City, OH 43064
The 25-member cast is deep
into rehearsals. Ticket information
will be announced
soon.
• Christmas Under the
Clock—PCMATS will present
“A Clock Tower Christmas”
in conjunction with
the village of Plain City’s
annual holiday festivities
on Dec. 2. Small ensembles
will perform seasonal
songs, art, and dramatic
readings from 5 to 8 p.m. at
Buckeye Brass & Winds.
Admission is free.
• Holiday Concerts—The Plain City
Community Singers will perform Dec. 10 at
3 p.m. and Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. at Buckeye
went to the dogs for a day. On Aug. 26, hundreds of canines
from across the state gathered at the Darby Bend Lakes area to
participate in the annual dog festival known as Wag!Fest.
Pooches of all ages and breeds played in the water, met new
friends, begged their human companions to buy treats, begged
humans manning vendor booths and food trucks to give them
even more treats, and generally had a dog-gone good time.
The event also served as an educational outreach opportunity
for local animal rescue and shelter groups looking to link up potential
adopters with animals searching for their forever homes.
The Daily Bread Eatery strives to serve up locally
sourced, farm fresh, and organically produced artisan eats.
The new food truck, located at 121 E. High St., London,
offers burgers, grilled chicken sandwiches, steak
paninis, chicken paninis, and a variety of salads and
side dishes. Hours are 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Monday-Friday.
The Daily Bread Eatery is a group venture by Kate
Crager-Tobin and her family. The vegetables in the salads
and on the sandwiches are grown on farmland that
Kate, her husband, Clarke, and their children share
with Kate’s parents, Doug and Laura Crager, on Spring
Valley Road in London. Eventually, they hope to raise
their own cattle and chickens, too.
Lions Club hosting Halloween themed EYE Ball
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
The London Lions Club is getting a jump
on the Halloween spirit, hosting The EYE
Ball, a dance/party for ages 21 and older.
This first-time event is scheduled for
Sept. 30, 7-11 p.m., at Veterans of Foreign
Wars Post 7005, 56 N. Walnut St., West Jefferson.
A limited number of tickets are
available. They are $25 each and can be purchased
at www.eventbrite.com (search for
“London Lion’s Eye Ball”). Tickets also will
be sold at the door, if still available.
Deejay Charlie McCoy will play a variety
of music throughout the evening. M&M Dos,
a Mexican-themed food truck, and M&T, a
dessert-focused food truck, will be on site.
Snacks, drinks, and a cash bar are planned,
as well.
The Lions have gathered gift certificates
and merchandise from area businesses for
what they are calling a “giving skeleton.”
For $10, a participant can buy a bone; each
bone is good for a prize worth at least $10,
if not quite a bit more.
“We’re also holding a costume contest.
People who attend the ball don’t have to
dress up, but it would be fun if they did,”
said Gary Likens, London Lions Club president.
All proceeds from The EYE Ball will go
toward the club’s charitable activities. The
event owes its name to Lions International’s
main area of support—vision. The London
club upholds this mission with ongoing efforts
to collect used eyeglasses for redistribution
to people in need. They also have
London Lions Club member Greg Eades (left) and club President Gary Likens (right)
welcome new member Sydney Hanley who is helping to organize the club’s upcoming
fundraising event, The EYE Ball.
provided support to local families for costs
associated with eye surgeries and donate to
Pilot Dogs, a Columbus-based organization
that helps people who are blind or visually
impaired live with greater independence.
Lions clubs don’t stop at vision-related
causes. They also lend a hand when it comes
to hunger, diabetes, childhood cancer, and
the environment, along with programs and
projects close to home. For example, the
London Lions Club regularly supports the
Sufficient Grace food program for children
based in West Jefferson. They have donated
to Merri-Mac Park Miracle, the group working
to improve Merri-Mac Park in London.
And they funded and built Noah’s Bridge at
Cowling Park in London.
“The Lions Club motto is plain and simple:
‘We serve,’” Likens said. “We have a
good group in London and invite others to
join us. We’re very serious about what we
do, but we also have a lot of fun.”
To learn more about The EYE Ball or
Financial aid available
for home cooling costs
The Ohio Department of Development
and Bridges Community Action Partnership
are helping income-eligible Ohioans stay
cool during the hot summer months.
The Home Energy Assistance Summer
Crisis Program provides eligible Ohioans with
help in paying an electric bill or paying for
central air conditioning repairs. The program
started July 1 and runs through Sept. 30.
To apply, clients must schedule an appointment
with Bridges Community Action
Partnership by calling (740) 852-3511.
Clients need to bring the following documents
to their appointment:
• copies of most recent energy bills;
• list of all household members and proof
of income for the last 30 days or 12 months
for each member;
• proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency
for all household members;
• proof of disability (if applicable);
• physician documentation that cooling
assistance is needed for a household member’s
health (if there isn’t a household member
over the age of 60).
Last year, more than 1,058 families in
Champaign, Delaware, Logan, Madison,
Shelby, and Union counties were helped
through the Home Energy Assistance Summer
Crisis Program.
Eligible households can receive up to
$500 if they are a customer of a regulated
utility or $800 if they are a customer of unregulated
utilities such as electric cooperatives
and municipal utilities. The assistance
is applied to their utility bill, to purchase an
air conditioning unit or fan, or to pay for
central air conditioning repairs. Ohioans
must have a gross income at or below 175
percent of the federal poverty guidelines to
qualify for assistance. For a family of four,
the annual income must be at or below
$52,500.
Also, Ohioans enrolled in the Percentage
of Income Payment Plan Plus (PIPP) program
who meet the above criteria may be eligible
for assistance towards their default
PIPP payment, first PIPP payment, central
air conditioning repairs, or may receive an
air conditioning unit and/or fan.

Potty-mouthed pooches fun to watch in ‘Strays’
“Strays,” a live-action movie featuring a
group of talking canines, feels as if it was
written after someone experienced a wild
dream. I can just imagine movie scribe Dan
Perrault pulling out his notebook at twilight
and jotting down broken thoughts such as:
naughty, sentimental dogs; good filthymouth
ones; talking dogs; does mine speak;
am I still dreaming; I think I have a movie
idea; would anyone like this idea; I should
pitch this idea to a studio; I should go back
to sleep.
If this were 20 years ago, chances are a
screenwriter could have walked into a movie
studio, pitched a plot featuring a pottymouthed,
talking dog, and received a round
of rowdy laughter followed by a stamp of approval
and a blank check to bring this outlandish
vision to life. After all, that was the
era of gross-out comedies—or even just comedies,
come to think of it.
Since then, however, movie studios have
practically weaned these types of films out
of existence due to their aversion to making
mid-budget films they think won’t have
mass appeal (read: bring in the big bucks to
fatten their wallets). Such movies have
found a home on streaming services, and
their popularity has made traditional take
notice.
It should be noted that taking notice does
not amount to taking a risk (see the lack of
comedies released in theaters in the past
decade). Yet, somehow, screenwriter Dan
Perrault of “American Vandal” television series
acclaim and director Josh Greenbaum
of cult-classic “Barb and Star Go to Vista
Del Mar” fame convinced Universal Pictures
to fund a movie about dogs who seek revenge
on those who have forsaken them. It
turned out to be the right decision.
Although this movie is not likely to tear
up the box office, I have to say it was kind
of refreshing to see a comedy in a similar
vein as those of yesteryear. To be sure, there
are plenty of tired
jokes in this movie,
but it has that
weird charm that
makes you wince,
makes you cry, and makes you believe there
is a beating heart buried somewhere in the
filth.
At the center of this weird but oddly
sweet movie is Reggie (voiced by Will Ferrell),
a mangy albeit adorable border terrier
who loves everything about his life. He loves
getting to spend hours outside, alone with
his beloved butterflies; he loves those few
brief seconds he gets on the couch before
being pushed off; he loves all of the human
food he finds on the floor; and he absolutely
loves his human, Doug (played by Will
Forte), who he believes can do no wrong.
One of Reggie’s favorite things about
Doug is his willingness to play games, especially
one called “Fetch and (Expletive)”
where his companion drives him out to remote
parts of the state, launches his favorite
toy, drives off in his car, and is full of rage
when the smart little pooch somehow makes
his way back home. Sadly, Reggie is oblivious
to the horribleness that is Doug, but he
cannot help but love that nasty human with
his whole heart.
One day, Doug finally manages to rid
himself of the poor border terrier and Reggie
is left all alone, scared in a strange city.
Soon after, he meets up with a homeless
Boston terrier named Bug (voiced by Jamie
Foxx) and his two friends, Maggie the Australian
shepherd (voiced by Isla Fisher) and
Hunter the Great Dane (voiced by Randall
Park) who take him under their paw. Not
only do they show him how to live on the
streets, but they also try to make Reggie see
that the human he so desperately wants to
get back to wants nothing to do with him.
Because Hunter is a therapy dog by
get revenge on the human who could never
manage to show him love or even the slightest
bit of care.
If you have seen the trailers, you’ve seen
most of the best gags “Strays” has to offer,
the surprise twist on the sentimental narrator
dog notwithstanding. But even though
the plot is predictable and the gags are
sometimes obvious, the human and canine
cast elevates the material and gives
“Strays” a surprisingly huge amount of
heart. In fact, its best attribute is a fresh
and relevant take on abusive relationships
as it has some genuinely good insight and
outlooks on these subjects. It came as a
shock that among all the chaos that happens
in this film, “Strays” still manages to
make its emotional story the centerpiece of
the film.
For those who may be wondering about
this take, I should say that despite it being
somewhat sad, “Strays” is not “Marley and
Me.” Although heartstrings are pulled, it is
not as emotionally manipulative as that one
or most of the other animal tale movies out
there. Instead, it is a deeply silly movie that
lightly touches on the sad reality of unwanted
or abandoned pets. If anything, it
will move the audience to be as kind as they
can to their pooches and also serve as a reminder
to give some love to those who are
less fortunate. After all, they may start to
gang up on people and exact revenge for not
doing so.
lon; nephews, Joel (Stacy) Slanker, Andy (Stefanie) Slanker and
Michael (Lindsey) Slanker; niece, J.J. Slanker; as well as great-nieces
and great-nephew, Tessa, Gracie Lucy, and Shepherd Slanker.
Ted graduated from Bethel High School in 1967. He moved to
Columbus, Ohio, not long after graduation to work as an orderly for
The Ohio State University Hospital’s Emergency Room and attend
The Ohio State University. While living in an apartment in Columbus,
he met Anne, the love of his life and wife for 39 years before
her passing in 2011.
Ted and Anne moved to London in 1975 where they found the
place they called home for the rest of their lives. He started his own
business and had a successful career as the owner/operator of
Slanker Drainage in London. If you asked Ted what he did for a living,
he’d proudly say, “I’m a ditchdigger,” and he certainly lived up
to the title by digging thousands of miles of ditches in farm fields
across Ohio. Ted had an engineer’s mind and could fix almost anything.
He built a lot of his own equipment that he used in his business.
As his career continued, he saw an opportunity to evolve his
business to build sports fields and led sports turf drainage projects
for schools, colleges, and universities across the Midwest, including
notably and proudly supporting the renovation of The Ohio State
University football field from 1999-2001.
Ted loved the London community and gave so much of himself
to the community through his work and deeds. He put his sports
field experience to good use when he served on the London Booster
Association and helped lead the effort to develop the sports complex
at London High School from 1990-1996. Ted was an active member
of many community groups and boards over the years. Most recently,
he served on the Madison County Board of Developmental
Disabilities for many years, including a term as president. He had
a deep faith and was a member of London Presbyterian Church for
more than 45 years. Over the last few years, he attended Liberty
Presbyterian Church with his daughter and her family.
In his retirement, Ted drove a truck for a local farm and also
helped several family friends with their harvests in Illinois. He
truly loved being around the hustle of an active farm! He found a
lot of fulfillment in all of the jobs he had throughout his life, but
the greatest job he ever had was being a grandpa. Popa Ted adored
his grandchildren and shared many wonderful adventures with
Sammy, Savanna, and Annabelle through the years. One of his favorite
activities was mushroom hunting with his son, and he also
loved traveling with his family and even tolerated beach trips on
multiple occasions.
Ted was very close with his whole family and had a special bond
with his many Studebaker cousins. He was
very proud to be part of the Studebaker
family which led him to have a great love of
Studebaker cars. He enjoyed driving his
1948 Studebaker convertible around town
and on car tours. His Studebaker roots instilled
in him to live the motto: “Always give
more than you promise.” Ted embodied this
sentiment in everything he did. He was the
hardest worker his family knew. He was always
willing to lend a helping hand and always
showed up for his friends and family
to help out with any project that needed
him.
To remember Ted, we encourage those
reading this to follow in his example of always
being a helper and always giving more
than is asked of you. If you’d like to give a
donation in Ted’s memory, please give to an
organization that helps others and serves a
community well—just like Ted served his
family, friends, and community for the past
74 years. Ted will be buried alongside Anne
at Studebaker Cemetery sometime this fall.
A Celebration of Life will follow the graveside
service.
