Skinny the ‘Super
Senior Seal’ continues
defying record
books at Oregon
Coast Aquarium
Skinny was just a harbor seal pup when she
was found stranded on a Washington beach,
orphaned, dehydrated and starving. Though she
received immediate care, Skinny was eventually
deemed non-releasable and given a temporary
home in Tacoma, Wash., at the Point Defiance
Zoo & Aquarium.
Defiance proved to be a fitting description
for Skinny because, since that day in 1975, she
has gone on to defy more than just the odds of
survival. In nature, harbor seals can live into their
late teens, with those in human care generally
living into their 20s. Now, at age 48, Skinny has
defied the record books as well by becoming the
oldest-living seal on record — a Super Senior in
seal terms.
“Skinny has been alive longer than her
caretakers,” said Brittany Blades, Oregon Coast
Aquarium’s Curator of Marine Mammals. “She’s
seen it all. There have been major changes in
animal husbandry practices over the last 50 years,
and she’s adapted amazingly.”
The aquarium became Skinny’s permanent
home just before its grand opening in 1992, with
Skinny becoming — and remaining — a fan favorite
through the decades. Blades began working
with Skinny 12 years ago, building a foundation
of trust that has been mutually beneficial. As it
turns out, you can teach an old seal new skills.
Through patience, positive reinforcement, and the
dedication of aquarium mammalogists, Skinny
has surpassed expectation after expectation, and is
now the most self-assured seal at the Oregon Coast
Aquarium.
In fact, Skinny continues to learn and practice
new behaviors. For example, during training,
marine mammals learn to lie down on cue, follow
a target, hold a pose, and more. These skills
aren’t for entertaining crowds; they are important
abilities needed during medical exams, allowing
the animals to participate in their own care. Much
like humans, harbor seals are prone to arthritis,
cataracts and other age-related ailments. Because
of this, aquarium mammalogists are well-versed
in looking after geriatric animals like Skinny,
providing specialized treatment — including
acupuncture, laser therapy and even chiropractic
adjustments — to ensure she stays healthy and
comfortable through her golden years.
“Earning Skinny’s trust, watching her progress,
and growing with her has been a highlight of my
career,” said Blades. “It’s truly been an honor.”
During a recent electrocardiogram to check up
on her heart health, Skinny knew exactly what to
do. On her cue, she followed, rolled, and held still
as veterinary staff examined her. Twenty minutes
later, the results were in: Skinny remains as healthy
as ever.
She’ll continue to live out her retirement at the
aquarium, charming visitors, volunteers, and staff
alike. As anyone who’s seen Skinny can tell you,
she’s easy to pick out from a crowd thanks to her
distinctive sleek silver fur and wide, engaging eyes
— which caretakers joke don’t blink because, if she
did, another 48 years might just fly by.
Knowing that, it makes every day with Skinny
a gift.
You can visit Skinny at the Oregon Coast
Aquarium. Summer hours are 10am - 6pm 7 days
a week. Visit Aquarium.org for more information.
WORLD OF
SEAWEED
COMES TO
LIGHT
They often don’t get a second look, but the
seaweed off local beaches are a world unto
themselves. Now they are the subject of a new
exhibit at the Pacific Maritime Heritage Center
on the Newport Bayfront, with June 2-4 set aside
for Seaweed Weekend and a special look at marine
flora.
The Lincoln County Historical Society presents
“The Curious World of Seaweed” exhibit, with
color “portraits” of seaweed, merging history, art
and science — all highlighting seaweed’s vital role
as the base of the food chain.
Also featured are stories of indigenous peoples’
and pioneer women’s connections to seaweed,
and a glimpse into their importance to local
commercial and sport fisheries.
The exhibit is a traveling show of the work of
artist and author Josie Iselin of San Francisco, in
partnership with Exhibit Envoy, and is based on
her book, “The Curious World of Seaweed.”
The exhibit arrived in Newport in crates, ready
to be installed. ”We pulled some glass floats
from our collection to add to it,” said Susan
Tissot, executive director of the Lincoln County
Historical Society, which maintains the Heritage
Center.
The traveling exhibit is sponsored by Englund
Marine & Industrial Supply, with support from
Tissot said her husband, a marine biologist,
suggested she contact Iselin and showed her
Iselin’s book. Tissot called Iselin, learned about
the traveling exhibit and arranged for its showing
in Newport, its first appearance in the Northwest.
“We’re across the street from the commercial
fishing fleet, and without seaweed, that industry
doesn’t exist,” Tissot said. “There’s definitely a
concern about the future of kelp and seaweed,
which we can’t take for granted. And seaweed
has become an important industry.” She noted
that Oregon Seaweed in Garibaldi produces dried
dulse seaweed as a seasoning and as a snack.,
In addition to learning about the historical role
seaweed has played in coastal living, Tissot said
exhibit-goers can view Iselin’s art, both in prints
and on 8-foot banners hanging from the ceiling.
Iselin collects and dries seaweed, including
kelp, puts it on a flatbed scanner and adds color to
the digital copies to generate the imagery for her
painting-like prints, notecards and scarves, some
of which are available at the Heritage Center’s gift
shop.
content,” Tissot said. “With its combination of art,
history and science, it has everything you need to
know about seaweed. And it’s a great opportunity
for people to see Josie’s amazing work, and a great
way to learn why seaweed is so important in the
ecosystem.”
Iselin has a bachelor’s degree from Harvard and
a Master of Fine Arts degree from San Francisco
State University. She is co-director of the Above/
Below collaborative, working for recognition of
the oceans’ kelp forests.
A special feature of the exhibit is a newly set
up children’s area, with a kelp forest created by
Newport resident Carol Shenk.
“Carol has gone above and beyond,” Tissot said.
“She is an incredibly talented artist and author of
children’s books. We’re very lucky to have her as a
volunteer in our archives.”
Shenk, who moved to Newport in 2019, retired
from a career as an archivist for King County
in Washington state. Since moving to the coast,
she has volunteered with the historical society
archives as well as with the Guin Library at the
OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center, but she is
now focusing on her art. She has taught beginning
drawing at the Newport Visual Arts Center and
works primarily in mixed media and assemblage.
“It’s been exciting to create something that
could support the exhibit,” she said of her kelp
forest.
Shenk used unbleached wax paper to create
the kelp, along with paper, string, beeswax and
paint. “I tried to keep it non-toxic because it’s in
an area for kids,” she said. “And I wanted to make
it compostable.
“My goal for the installation was to create the
feeling of an underwater kelp forest, and to have
the feeling of the kelp floating,” Shenk noted.
The seaweed exhibit, which is in the mezzanine
gallery, runs through Oct. 21. The museum, at 333
SE Bay Blvd., is open Tuesdays through Sundays
from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with parking available on site.
OPEN FARM DAY
AT CAMANNA’S
PETITE
PARADISE
Anna Brown of Siletz is happy to share the love,
peace and joy she gets from her family’s farm,
Camanna’s Petite Paradise — and she has 230
animals to help her along that path.
Anna and her husband, Cameron — namesakes
of the farm — settled in 2000 on 30 acres on
Old River Road outside of Siletz. Cameron is an
engineer at the Georgia-Pacific mill in Toledo, but
still finds time to shear the farm’s sheep and act
as handyman, while Anna takes care of the farm
and its animals.
“Although I have a master’s degree in animal
science from Oregon State University and have
worked in the livestock industry, I feel very blessed
to be able to stay home and take care of my family
and animals,” Anna said. She also grows flowers
and vegetables, and enjoys photography, baking
and cooking. But her animals are a priority, and
they are a wondrous collection — one she is eager
22
to share at Camanna’s Open Farm Day.
Farming has been an integral part of Anna’s
whole life. She grew up on 10 acres in Brookings
and got her first goat more than 50 years ago,
eventually getting involved with breeding goats.
She has had Nigerian goats for 23 years and helped
develop the Nigerian dwarf dairy goat breed, a
miniature milker that she said is now the most
popular breed in the U.S.
The farm is now home to 12 species of animals
— 13 if you include the Canada geese that land
at the farm pond. The animals include 11 llamas;
eight alpacas; five Kunekune pigs (with litters
expected in July); shetland sheep; horses; lots of
goats; the rare Valais Blacknose sheep; six livestock
guardian dogs that live in the pasture and barn
with the animals they guard; rabbits; chickens;
small dogs and barn cats.
While none of the animals live in the house,
“they have a pretty posh farm life,” Anna said.
“It’s really peaceful here, and we have a pond
with a bridge out to an island. The goats live on
the island and have a hut there. People can walk
around the pond and can get to experience farm
life in the pastures with the animals.”
Open Farm Day
“We try to share the beauty and peace of all
these animals,” Anna explained, noting that one
way she can do that is to host a monthly Open
Farm Day. Visitors have come from as far away as
Hillsboro, and some return every month for Open
Farm Day activities. Anna said about 700 people
visited last year.
From 2017-19, the Browns took some of their
animals to the Oregon State Fair in Salem for a
mixed species display. Since COVID, however,
she has shifted to the open farm concept, inviting
people to come to their Siletz home and meet the
animals where they live.
“We feel very blessed and want to share that
with the public,” Anna said.
This year marks the third that the farm is
hosting Open Farm Days from May through
October, set for the second Saturday of the month.
No admission is charged, but donations are
welcome. Visitors are asked to sanitize their shoes
before going into the barn and pasture, as a way to
protect the herds from disease.
And there’s always something special added
to Open Farm Day — last month featured bottle
feeding baby goats and sampling fresh goat milk
and homemade cookies, and this month’s event
will include live music from one of the farm’s
OC WAVES • VOL 3.10
Workaway participants, on a break from his
classes at Juilliard in New York City. The Browns’
oldest child, Shantelle, 28, will be selling dahlia
tubers. Also helping out will be the Browns’ two
sons, both students at OSU, who return home on
weekends to help with the farm.
There’s also an opportunity to buy handcrafted
items such as canvas bags featuring Anna’s photo
art, as well as fleeces.
And this is a great time of year to stop by
Open Farm Day for the pure joy of it, with many
newborns present to delight visitors.
The farm has a small flock of rare Valais
Blacknose Sheep, including four ewe lambs with
the rare spotted “Spitti” color pattern. Anna said
there’s only a 2 or 3 percent chance to have that
pattern, a 1 in 50,000 to 1 in 100,000 chance to
have four, and probably an even more rare chance
to have them born in a row.
‘CELEBRATING
CREATIVITY’ AT
THE VAC
The Coastal Arts Guild and American Easel are excited to announce the
opening of their second annual exhibit featuring 45 new works on wood
panels. “45 x 45: Celebrating Creativity” will be on display in the Upstairs
Gallery at Newport Visual Arts Center from today (Friday) through July 29.
This unique show features new, multidisciplinary works of art from 45
community artists. Each begins with identical 10 x 10-inch wood panels as
their base, but what they do from that point is entirely up to them. The
show will feature a variety of mediums, from acrylics to mixed media, fabric
collage, linoleum print and more.
Not only visually beautiful, the exhibition also does something beautiful —
it provides funding for VAC needs. Artists purchased their base panels, and
that money will fund building improvements. The sale of completed pieces,
however, will benefit artists directly and fully. When a visitor purchases a
completed panel from the exhibition, 100 percent of the price will go directly
to its creator.
“The 45 x 45 show gives artists an opportunity to share the vast variety of
their mediums and styles with the public while simultaneously supporting
improvements at VAC,” said Chasse Davidson, VAC director. “We’re grateful to
the Coastal Arts Guild and feel fortunate to have their support. Their volunteer
contributions help keep our galleries accessible to the public, and their monthly
Tea & Talk provides a platform of introduction for visiting artists.”
BOAT
AGROUND
While residents and others are noticing a small sailboat around near the Port of Newport International
Terminal, U.S. Coast Guard personnel say they are aware of it. A Coast Guard spokesperson said
Tuesday that they received a call a couple weeks ago that the boat had run aground on the sandbar.
Personnel pulled one subject from the vessel and later attempted to contact its owner. According
to personnel, the rescued subject was not the owner, but no further information was disclosed.
Unlike the pilgrims who often get trapped on the points and sometimes swept away, Ron Whittle and Craig Gardrepy brought climbing rope and wore flotation-style fishing
vests to handle the bluffs of solid volcanic boil at Depoe Bay. The popularity of “extreme fishing” has exploded with websites and YouTube video channels devoted to hazardous
locations and the gear to stay comfortable and safe. (Photos by Rick Beasley).
‘EXTREME’
FISHING
TAKES GEAR,
GUTS
Let’s face it: while fishing from a charter boat
is the safest, surest way to bring home the bacon,
sure-footed anglers can put together a limit of hardfighting
rockfish right from the stony headlands
and jetties of Depoe Bay and Newport. All you
need is a cooperative ocean and the right setup for
“extreme fishing.”
The popularity of “extreme fishing” has
exploded with websites and YouTube video
channels devoted to hazardous locations and the
gear to stay comfortable and safe. We live in an
outdoors utopia where the game can kill and eat
you and you can go fishing and never be seen
again. It is impossible to overstate the dangers of
bank fishing on the Pacific Ocean — at some dicey
spots I fish with a tether and a crash helmet where
a slip on the knife-sharp, algae-covered rocks
would deliver me to Davey Jones.
Among the inexpensive items needed for safe
bank fishing are:
• About 50 ft. of polypropylene rope and a
couple of D-rings for your safety-rope setup. Tie
the rope to your waist and secure it to a suitable
rock;
• A floatation-style fishing vest with plenty of
pockets for gear and the buoyancy to keep you
afloat if you fall from the rocks;
• A bike helmet to avoid serious injury from
falls on the wet, moss-covered rocks.
The predominant bite along the rocky shorelines
of the Central Oregon Coast is black rockfish,
but don’t rule-out other hard-fighting species
including perch, sea bass, ling cod and greenling.
To target rockfish, use as light a rig as conditions
allow — a catfish rod and a spinning reel wound
with 25 to 50 lb. test will do the trick. A lead-head
jig with a plastic tail that mimics a swimming baitfish
is practically irresistible to rapacious snappers
that measure up to 17 inches or more.
Bring along an assortment of sizes and colors,
and pack a colorful climbing rope, a helmet and
flotation gear as though your life depends on it!
THE KITCHEN WILD
PHOTOS AND RECIPES BY KATIE WILEY
LIME CHILI FRIED
CLAMS WITH
RAMEN NOODLE
SALAD
As a child of the ’80s, I grew up eating a lot of
things no one should consume on a regular basis.
I lived on microwave TV dinners, Totino’s pizzas,
potato chips, and lots of instant ramen noodles —
and my health suffered because of it. My weight
was a constant struggle, I had chronic headaches,
acne and more fatigue than a teenager should, and
I never understood why. I honestly thought my
body was just different than other people — having
absolutely no clue that it was the processed foods
I was consuming that were causing such a negative
effect on my body.
It wasn’t until I was in my late teens when
my weight really became a huge struggle that I
decided to try a new “diet,” where I only ate foods
that I picked from my mother’s garden. I vividly
remember that first week of only consuming
cucumbers, tomatoes, radishes, leaf lettuce and
adding grilled chicken breasts for protein. I began
shedding weight immediately, but aside from
the obvious physical change, I felt amazing. My
headaches were gone, my fatigue was gone, my skin
looked better, my overall mood improved, and I
truly felt better than I had ever felt in my life. It
was at this moment when I made it my mission to
learn about real foods and what effect they have
on our bodies.
The term “real food” is defined as “all foods
that have not been industrially processed or foods
that have not had their natural qualities interfered
with or the quality of their composition reduced.”
But to put it simply, if it grows naturally (whether
plant or animal) it’s real, if it’s made in a factory it’s
not. It was at that moment that I tossed all process
“foods” and replaced them with fresh fruits and
vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins like
chicken breasts, fish and seafood and embarked on
a whole new lifestyle, not just for my weight but for
my overall health.
It’s been well over 20 years now since I
implemented this lifestyle change, and I can’t say
that I’ve had a single TV dinner or Totino’s pizza
since, but some habits are harder to break than
others — those instant ramen noodles are still my
guilty pleasure. However, these days it’s all about
balance; cooking and eating real foods most of the
time but occasionally treating myself to those foods
I still love from my childhood, like the occasional
bowl of ramen noodles.
So this week I decided to play around with some
instant ramen. Although chicken is my usual goto
flavor, I thought the Lime Chili Shrimp flavor
might go well with clams, and boy was I right! That
classic ramen flavor with a hint of heat and lime
on those sweet and crispy clams were a home run.
Plus, incorporating those noodles with some other
fresh ingredients like cabbage, carrots and green
onions made it somehow feel a bit healthier.
At the end of the day, life is short so we certainly
want to enjoy the foods we eat, but we also want to
feel our very best doing so. As a bonus, getting out
there and digging these clams burns calories and
builds muscle helping us feel our very best.
Lime Chili Fried Clams
Ingredients:
• 1 limit of cockle clams, sliced in half
lengthwise (slicing them lengthwise through the
foot keeps them tender)
• 2 cups flour
• 1/2 tsp baking powder
• 1/2 tsp baking soda
• 4 Lime Chili Shrimp Maruchan seasoning
packets
• 1/2 tsp salt
• 1/2 tsp garlic powder
• Zest from one lime plus lime wedges for
serving
• 1 egg
• 1 cup milk
• Sweet chili dipping sauce for serving
Directions:
Heat oil to 375 degrees. In one large bowl,
combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, Lime
Chili seasoning packets, salt and garlic powder.
Whisk to fully combine the ingredients.
In separate bowl whisk together milk and egg.
Dredge clams on both sides with the flour
mixture, then to the egg mixture on both sides,
and again into the flour mixture. For this step I
press the flour mixture down onto the clams to
ensure they’re dredged fully. Gently shake off
excess flour.
Fry to a golden brown, remove from oil and set
on rack or paper towel.
For serving add a generous amount of lime
zest on top on clams, serve with additional lime
wedges and sweet chili sauce for dipping
Spicy Dungeness Crab Dip
Ingredients:
• 2 cups lump crab meat, plus 1/4 cup for topping dip after baking
• 8 oz. cream cheese, softened
• 1/2 cup mayonnaise
• 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese
Cut off top of sourdough bread and gently hollow out loaf leaving enough
bread around the edges for structure. Fill bread bowl with crab mixture. Bake for
While crab dip is in the oven, break up leftover sourdough bread into small
pieces. Melt one tablespoon butter in skillet and add one smashed whole garlic
HALIBUT FISH
TACOS
I finally checked catching a halibut off my
bucket list!
My husband Jed and I recently went fishing
out of Newport with our very good friends
Tony Thiessen and Eugene Calkins, owners of
Crack’n Crab Cleaner, and thanks to the skill and
knowledge those guys have acquired from fishing
their entire lives, my husband and I both caught
our very first halibut ever.
We left the docks at 6 a.m. sharp, heading 32
miles out from the jetty tips to our destination.
Almost immediately after dropping our tackle in
300 feet of water, we had a bite, and I was ready to
reel in my very first halibut ever. That sucker was
big, and it was heavy. But sadly, due to a tackle
malfunction or perhaps it just wasn’t its time to be
dinner yet, it got away.
But just then, another bite. This one my husband
grabbed and reeled in. Watching him catch his
first halibut was incredible. I knew how much this
fish meant to him, and there’s something about
watching your handsome husband reel in a giant
fish that adds an extra level of excitement to it!
When he got that fish to the boat it was big, 49
inches of good eating to be exact, and being there
to witness that moment and see that huge smile on
his face meant everything to me.
After a bit of time passed we had another bite,
and the guys were so generous to let me have
another shot at reeling one in — and I wasn’t about
to let this one get away! With the help of Tony,
keeping a tight grip on me and the fishing rod
so we both didn’t go overboard into the ocean, I
reeled that 43-inch halibut in. Tagging that halibut
was such an awesome moment, definitely one I’ll
never forget.
Before the day was over, we landed another
41-inch halibut on the boat caught by Eugene
and picked up the crab pots we dropped on the
way out. You know the pros from Crack’n Crab
Cleaner are dropping crab pots any chance they
get so we were double blessed that day with halibut
and Dungeness crab.
Another huge thank you to Tony and Eugene
from Crack’n Crab Cleaner for taking my husband
Jed and I out halibut fishing. I am always so
thankful for the opportunity to spend time with
three of my favorite guys out there on the water
and now so thankful for a freezer full of fish on
top of it.
If I’m being honest, even with all the help from
the guys on the boat, a long day of fishing can be
SUMMER
FESTIVAL
BIG ON
SMALL-TOWN
CHARM
If you’re missing the pure nostalgia of an oldfashioned
community celebration, step back into a
better era at the the Toledo Summer Festival, July
13-16.
The annual jubilee is a time machine that brings
people together like Gorilla Glue, cementing
Toledo’s status as the tight-knit embodiment of
Oregon hometown charm. Parades, fireworks,
a carnival and feats of logging verve practically
unheard of in the lowlands give the event an
exciting, cinematic quality — so bring your camera!
The event begins Thursday, July 13, with a
sidewalk chalk contest, 10-noon, and coronation
of the festival court at 7 p.m. A Main Street kiddie
parade launches festivities Friday, July 14, at 6
p.m. when gates to the Rainier Carnival open
at sprawling Memorial Field. New rides and eyepopping
midway events are scheduled, including a
stilt walker and fire dancers.
On Saturday, July 15, the Festival Grand Parade
begins its winding march from the bowling alley to
Main St. at 11 a.m., led by Grand Marshal Scott
Warfield, an iconic Toledo logger. Carnival gates
swing wide open at noon to the sounds of DJ
music and the alluring aromas of midway treats.
A respite from the summer heat can be found in
the Bingo Tent.
BY RICK BEASLEY
Chain saws will cough and roar to life at 1 p.m.
when treat an awestruck audience to a display
of deep-woods skills such as the axe throw, the
obstacle pole, the double buck and the block
toss; kids will display their own logging skills at
3 p.m. Line-dancing and amazing displays of
sword-swallowing and other astounding feats by
American Mayhem are set for 7 p.m. Following
the dusk events, fireworks will illuminate the
picturesque mill town nestled in the foothills of
the Coast Range on Highway 20, just five miles
east of Newport.
The Toledo Summer Festival concludes Sunday,
July 16, with a magic show, 10 a.m. to noon,
followed by a community tug-o-war. Chances are,
you may already feel the pull of this celebrated
homage to community ties, now in its 38th year.
