I NEWS I
IFA Berlin 2023:
A tech renaissance
in the heart of Europe
IFA Berlin 2023 has once again proven itself as a premier
global tech event, drawing a massive crowd of 182,000
visitors from 138 countries. This year's edition was particularly
special, marking IFA's full-fledged return post-pandemic, with
no holds barred. The event sprawled across 26 halls, covering
a vast 130,000 square metres, and featuring a diverse array of
over 2,000 exhibitors.
eager startups with over 200 potential
investors. This platform fostered
collaboration, innovation, and even a
bit of friendly competition, with a pitch
battle that saw French startup Urban
Cuisine emerging victorious with their
connected indoor vegetable garden
concept.
As the curtains came down on IFA 2023,
the tech world was left in anticipation.
With the 100th anniversary of IFA on the
horizon in 2024, the future looks brighter
than ever
The event wasn't just about showcasing
the latest in tech; it was about creating
experiences. Attendees had the chance
to explore the Sustainability Village,
delve into the Robotics Hub, and even
relax in the IFA Outdoors space located
in the iconic Sommergarten. This area
was a blend of tech and leisure, with
street food stands, co-working spaces,
and even spots for quiet contemplation.
On the tech front, keynotes by industry
leaders HONOR and Hisense provided
a glimpse into the future. HONOR's
presentation on foldable technology as
not just a device but a fashion accessory
was a standout, while Hisense's vision
of integrated consumer-centric services
was equally compelling.
The IFA Next innovation hub was
buzzing with activity, connecting 350
Echoes of innovation:
IFA 2023 through the eyes of
exhibitors and trade visitors
This year's IFA may have come to a close, but echoes of its
success are reverberating throughout the tech world. Some
key exhibitors and trade visitors shared their impressions of
this year’s event, painting a picture of innovation, collaboration,
and anticipation.
AEG Electrolux's Michael Geisler
was enthusiastic in his praise of this
year's IFA: "IFA 2023 provided the
perfect setting to showcase our new
AEG Ecoline and to launch the AEG
SaphirMatt induction hob with scratchresistant
glass. The feedback from our
retail partners and consumers was
overwhelming - both in terms of our
innovations and our beautiful stand.”
Aiper's Richard Wang highlighted the
show's significance for tapping into
the European market: “IFA offers us
valuable opportunities with regard to
the European market and the possibility
to reach not only the pool specialists
but the broad masses.” The company's
cordless pool cleaning robots and the
new robotic skimmer, unveiled for the
first time at IFA, received accolades,
illustrating the event's role in bridging
innovators with the masses.
Dr Karsten Wildberger, CEO of
MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group, stated
that IFA is a crucial event for the Group
for several reasons, “Firstly, it's about
meeting all our partners from across
our 11 countries. Additionally, it's a
source of inspiration as we explore our
partners' presentations, new products,
and discussions on sustainability.”
Beko/Grundig's Marius Stoica
applauded the show's atmosphere this
year, as well as the rousing reception
to their innovations: “The atmosphere
was fantastic, the response to our
innovations and new products was
overwhelming - from our business
partners as well as from the press and
consumers.” The company’s stand
attracted many significant visitors,
including Berlin's Governing Mayor, Kai
Wegner.
This positive feedback from just a few
of the main players illustrates that IFA
2023 was more than an event; it was
a celebration of tech innovation and
collaboration.
KIVI LAUNCHES
32-INCH SMART TV
FOR KIDS WITH BUILDING
BLOCK DESIGN
KIVI's new TVs for
kids rooms will
launch this autumn
The new product, showcased on the
company's 100sqm IFA 2023 stand,
will go to market in Q3, costing around
€300.
The KIVI KidsTV, specially designed for children’s
spaces, is a prominent part of the new TURN ON KIVI.
ROOM BY ROOM series. The unit boasts a vivid Full
HD display framed in a colourful block design and
features protective glass, an integrated nightlight, safe
content, and "Max Vivid" which dynamically tweaks
local brightness and image saturation, "elevating
standard content to near-HDR quality" according to
the company.
WITH OUR
TECHNOLOGY,
ANYONE CAN TAKE
THEIR EXISTING
AIR CONDITIONER
OR HEAT PUMP,
AND IN A MATTER
OF MINUTES, TURN
IT INTO A SMART
SYSTEM INSTEAD
OF BUYING A NEW
ONE.
Ran Roth
Co-founder & CEO,
Sensibo
Sensibo transforms any AC
system into a smart device
A large 32-inch screen provides an immersive
experience for shows and cartoons to ensure that
children engage and learn more effectively. The TV
also has the power to curate age-suitable content
and includes a secure mounting system to withstand
enthusiastic play, so that parents can breathe easy on
both fronts.
The KidsTV product line was inspired by KIVI's own
research which revealed a gap in the market for a
television product offering a commitment to children's
growth, creativity, and safety. An extra safe-content
TV also solves the issue of screen-time squabbles
between younger siblings.
Today, KIVI's products are available in nearly 20
European countries across more than 40 retail chains.
In its six years of existence, the company has sold over
1.5 million televisions. This year marked KIVI's second
participation at the IFA show.
The TURN ON KIVI. ROOM BY ROOM series came
about following an in-depth study of 2,500 consumers
and their behaviour, conducted by KIVI in 2022. It
showed that over 90% of buyers first determine the
area of the house for placing a future TV and only
then decide on the specs. This led to the creation of
an entirely new line, which includes KIVI KidsTV and
KIVI KitchenTV. They meet the specific consumer
requirements for a Smart TV in a particular room and
are complemented by appropriate accessories
IFA International spoke with Ran Roth, the cofounder
and CEO of the Israeli startup Sensibo,
about how the brand's technology is able to turn any
air conditioner into a smart device using AI, in this
way contributing to indoor energy efficiency.
How does Sensibo make air
conditioners smart, and what
technology underpins this
capability?
One of the problems with air
conditioners is that there are so
many makes and models. We at
Sensibo have the technology to
control them in a very reliable
way. With our technology,
anyone can take their existing air
conditioner or heat pump, and in
a matter of minutes, turn it into a
smart system instead of buying a
new one.
Energy efficiency is a crucial
aspect of smart homes. How
does Sensibo contribute to
energy savings and sustainable
living?
When you look at homes today,
for example in Europe, 85% of
the energy use goes into cooling
and heating. After lighting
where LED is very efficient, the
indoor climate is where we can
optimise the energy efficiency of
the smart home. And there are
studies that show that users can
save between 20% and 40% on
energy when data and context
are embedded. We help people to
understand what the temperature
is and what temperature they
should set.
Could you explain the
significance of the partnership
between Sensibo and OpenAI?
When we saw ChatGPT, we
started using it for content and
things like that, like everyone
else. But then we saw the
opportunity for embedding it
into the product, so we replaced
some of our algorithms with new
algorithms and with an open AI
back end. The good thing is that
user feedback is embedded back
into it making it better, so today,
people who use the product are
being offered schedules based on
their usage
I NEWS I
Changhong at IFA 2023: Enhancing user
experience with cutting-edge tech
At IFA 2023, the Chinese consumer electronics giant revealed
the newest additions to its product lineup including a new
range of OLED TVs, compact refrigerators and washing
machines, and smart home data security solutions.
Changhong's high-end smart devices
brand, CHiQ, introduced a new line of
OLED TVs for international markets.
These TVs boast an ultra-thin body,
borderless displays, and diverse stand
options. With per-pixel light control
and a 10.7 billion colour display, they
achieve a 98.5% DCI-P3 colour gamut
and a smooth 120Hz refresh rate,
ensuring both crystal clear visuals and
superior sound quality. Additionally,
Changhong's newest release in China,
the ARTIST series of TVs, a mere
24.9mm thick and outclassing local
competitors by 10mm, made its debut at
IFA, exemplifying unique aesthetics for
contemporary homes.
As of October, Europe will see the
release of several CHiQ TV models
powered by the latest Roku OS.
At IFA, CHiQ also rolled out its Space
Pro series of refrigerators and washing
machines, crafted with cutting-edge
ultra-thin technology, delivering on
the promise of "compact size, ample
capacity." The company also showcased
an array of other new products, from
Eva air conditioners and heat pumps to
self-cleaning robot vacuums and smart
home data security solutions.
Building on its manufacturing prowess
and brand clout, Changhong has seen
robust growth in global appliance
markets, particularly in the Americas,
Asia-Pacific, and Europe. The consumer
electronics giant is also gaining
momentum in emerging regions like
the Middle East and Africa. In the first
seven months of 2023, its appliance
sales outside of China surged by over
30%, with TVs, refrigerators, washing
machines, and air conditioners all hitting
record sales figures
Andreas Sebastian, Sales Director
at Changhong Deutschland GmbH,
giving a presentation at this year's IFA
On the lookout for Germanmade
TVs at IFA 2023
Alexander
Hajnek
Owner & Manager,
Expert Hajnek
IFA International met with buyer Alexander Hajnek in the
Retailer is King lounge at IFA this year. He told us what
consumers today are looking for in home entertainment,
from smaller TVs to the latest streaming services.
The business owner and manager of
Expert Hajnek, in southern Germany,
specialises in the resale of Hi-Fi and
TV products. He revealed what he
was looking for at IFA 2023 along
with the latest trends.
What products were you looking
for at IFA 2023?
This year at IFA, I was on the lookout
for TV and Hi-Fi products as well as
visiting existing business partners
and looking at what is new, before
ordering from them.
I was looking for improved
technologies and found
improvements in design, such as the
new Loewe series and the new TVs
with ceramic surrounding.
What were the main trends that
you saw at this year's IFA?
Hi-Fi that is included in streaming
and TV streaming are the biggest
trends right now.
What new products are consumers
looking for in particular?
OLED TVs are among the most
popular when it comes to selling
TVs. More and more people are also
looking for smaller TVs, not just the
bigger ones. People don’t have as
much space in their living rooms
these days, and more people are
living in smaller spaces.
Which exhibitors did you meet at
this year's IFA, and what has been
the focus of your discussions with
them?
I met with exhibitors such as Loewe,
Metz or Audioblock - all 'made in
Germany' products.
I focused in particular on high-end
TVs and products, prioritising quality
over the lowest price point. I look for
TVs with a special feature such as
a built-in hard drive, a double tuner
which enables users to watch one
programme and record another
simultaneously, or something else
special
I EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW I
Charting the future of IFA
IFA International spoke with IFA Management's new CEO Leif
Lindner about his vision for the future and anticipating next year's
centennial celebration
In an exclusive interview, Leif Lindner, the newly
appointed CEO of IFA Management GmbH, reflected
on the successes of this year's show, the evolution of
IFA, and the exciting plans in store for the show's 100 th
anniversary next year.
As you step into your new role as
CEO of IFA Management, how do
you plan to build on the legacy of
this year's edition? What is your
vision for the future?
The team organising this year's
show did an outstanding job. They
touched on many crucial topics
that will remain important for the
upcoming year. For instance, AI is
a subject we've begun to explore,
but there's much more to delve into.
Currently, many of our exhibitors
have showcased AI in various
products. The startup area, IFA Next,
was strongly expanded, and we
anticipate even more developments
in the next edition. Digital health is
another burgeoning topic we've only
slightly touched upon, but it will be a
focal point next year. In essence, we
view this IFA as a starting point, and
many of these subjects will be our
focus in the coming year.
Looking back on this year's IFA,
which moments or statistics
particularly resonated with you?
During the opening press
conference, we announced over
2,000 exhibitors, of which 70% were
returning exhibitors, while 30% were
new to the show. I'm particularly
proud that we sold out this IFA.
We've seen increased interest
from companies worldwide, eager
to participate in next year's event.
Especially for Asian companies,
this year's IFA was paramount.
It was heartening to witness the
strength of the IFA brand in Asia
and how companies leverage IFA for
marketing and product launches.
How does the 2023 show compare
to previous editions in terms of
attendees, exhibitor engagement,
and global impact?
What I would like to emphasise is
that while we aim for change, it's
not always immediately recognised.
However, German newspapers have
noted a distinct evolution in IFA's
presentation. We're in the early
stages of a transition to a more
modern, agile show that appeals
to Generation Z. We're striving to
refresh our image, becoming more
innovative and entertaining, while
honouring our 100-year legacy.
Few global shows can boast such
longevity. Next year's centennial
edition will seamlessly blend the
old with the new in a captivating
manner.
Next year marks IFA's 100th
birthday. Can you share a glimpse
of what attendees can expect?
Certainly. Our primary goal is to
entertain the entire city, making
IFA a household name. We aim to
create a real buzz next year with
engaging and innovative concepts.
We're reintroducing concerts in the
summer garden and hosting various
satellite events throughout the city.
From early to mid-September, it will
be impossible to visit Berlin without
encountering IFA.
Were there specific tech trends or
innovations from the 2023 show
that you believe will shape the
industry's direction in the future?
Absolutely. AI and platforms like
ChatGPT are frequently discussed.
The real question is how AI is
integrated into consumer electronics
and home appliances to simplify
users' lives. I've seen traditional
suppliers ingeniously incorporate
AI into their products. It's crucial
for the industry to embrace this
technology. The home appliance
sector, in particular, showcases the
potential of AI. We're just scratching
the surface. Next year, we'll provide
a comprehensive overview of how
AI can enhance our electronic
experiences.
How do you plan to foster
engagement with the global tech
community as we gear up for the
2024 edition?
Our strategy involves more frequent
and consistent communication
through IFA channels. Moving
forward, we'll utilise our platforms
more regularly, ensuring we
deliver relevant content. We'll also
continue to support events like the
startup night in Berlin and seek
collaborations with other shows to
expand our reach and explain the
benefits of joining IFA
IFA BERLIN
2023:
A SHOWCASE
OF INNOVATION
AND RESILIENCE
This year's IFA Berlin was nothing
short of spectacular, signaling a vibrant
return to form. With a sprawling 130,000
square metres across 26 halls, the event
hosted over 2,000 exhibitors, drawing a
staggering 182,000 attendees from 138
countries. But beyond these impressive
figures, IFA 2023 was a testament to the
spirit of innovation.
The event introduced several experiential
areas, from the forward-thinking
Sustainability Village to the cutting-edge
Robotics Hub. IFA Outdoors, set in the
iconic Sommergarten, offered a blend of
street food, activities, and relaxation spots,
making it a favourite among attendees.
Football enthusiasts had the chance to
meet stars from FC Union Berlin and
Victoria Berlin, adding a touch of sports to
the tech-heavy event.
Keynotes by industry giants HONOR and
Hisense provided insights into the future
of foldable technology and the integration
of consumer-centric services. The IFA
NEXT innovation hub was also a particular
highlight this year, connecting 350 startups
with over 400 investors, fostering
collaboration and innovation.
As Dr Sara Warneke aptly put it, the
success of IFA 2023 has set the direction
for future shows. With the centennial
celebration on the horizon in 2024, the
tech world waits with bated breath for
what's next
