Tyro’s
making
waves
• By Jaime Cunningham
A FRANTIC week surfing
the east coast of Australia has
paid off for Jack Tyro, who
achieved his goal of competing
in a World Surf League
longboarding event for the
first time.
Sumner local Tyro finished
17th equal in the Bioglan
Bells Beach Longboard
Classic, 100km south-west of
Melbourne, after winning
two other events in the 48
hours prior.
Reaching the pro-tour
competition had been a longterm
goal for 16-year-old Tyro,
who said competing at the
event was an overwhelming
moment.
“While surfing against the
world’s best I felt nothing but
awe as I sat beside them in the
heat,” he said.
“Knowing that I was
making them uncomfortable
and giving them a challenge
was a thrill in itself.”
Ten youths
nabbed
after crime
spree
FOUR YOUTHS have been taken
into custody after a shop was
burgled in Sumner.
They were the first of 10 youths
caught by police in just one night
after a crime spree of burgled
shops across the city.
Police said the incident on
Wakefield Rd, Sumner, was
reported around 2am on Tuesday.
A second group of four youths
were also arrested after breaking
into a fast food store on The
Runway in Wigram, which was
reported at 4.15am on Tuesday.
The youths were carrying out
their crimes in groups, police
said.
Separately, two youths were
taken into custody after officers
spotted a stolen car being driven
dangerously in Woolston that
same night. The car was later
found abandoned in Bromley at
2.50am, with two young people
found by officers a short time
later.
Police have confirmed they
are also following positive lines
of inquiry in relation to two
other burglaries in the city at
a vape store in Redwood and a
liquor store on Colombo St in
Sydenham.
Food Truck Alley back for summer
THIS WEEKEND sees the start of
daylight saving, which can only mean
one thing – the return of Food Truck
Alley.
All the regular food trucks will
be back, including Empire Chicken,
Pom’s Thai Kitchen, Smoke ‘n’ Barrel
BBQ, Saucey Kiwis, Stacked Burgers
and the G Spot. As well as dumplings,
woodfired pizza and crepes, there
will be Brazilian cheesebread and The
Butcher’s bacon rolls.
“The Food Truck Alley has become
a very popular community event,”
said organiser, Derek McCullough.
“With 19 food trucks and live
music, it is the ideal place for a family
picnic.”
There will be free face-painting and
appearances by Disney characters,
plus The Neutrons will be playing.
Other bands scheduled to play in
the coming months include The Nowhere
Men, Eastside and The Sound
Hunters.
“We are lucky to be able to include
bands from Te Aratai College and Mt
Pleasant School as well this summer,
which adds to the local feel of the
event,” said McCullough.
Muslim community planting
day a success at Purau Bay
• By Lily Duval
VOLUNTEERS planted 1325
native plants on a strip of private
land east of Purau Bay on
Sunday.
Citycare Property’s
community partnerships advisor
Hana Saemon-Beck organised
the event and collaborated with
Whaka-Ora Healthy Harbour,
Muslim Wellbeing Ōtautahi
(Purapura Whetu Trust), Active
Muslim Explorers, Sow a Lyttel
Seed and Paul Dahl.
Saemon-Beck was thrilled with
the turnout.
“Nearly 100 people of all
ages, genders, ethnicities and
backgrounds joined us – way
more than the 30 we planned
for,” she said.
“It’s heart-warming to see
everyone coming together for a
good cause.”
About half of the volunteers
travelled from Al-Noor Mosque,
where volunteers often tend the
community gardens.
Kaimahi for Nature
Whakaraupō and the city
council provided planting
expertise and support on the day.
The day was a resounding
success with all the plants going
TURN OUT: The planting day attracted 100 volunteers of different backgrounds.
hours.
“It was an awesome and
successful day,” said volunteer
Imtiaz Ali.
“I’m looking forward to doing
this more often.”
Said volunteer Yusrin Salleh:
“As we nourished the land and
animals, our hearts in return
were nourished too.”
Hidden Valley Conservation
Trust’s Paul Dahl spoke to the
group about the importance of
restoration planting.
“These plants are part of a
bigger vision for Whakaraupō
and Banks Peninsula,” he said.
“We want to recloak the hills
with native forest and bring back
the native species that used to
live here.
“It’s all part of the Whaka-Ora
Healthy Harbour Plan to protect
the land from erosion and the
water from sediment.”
With the hot, dry summer
already rearing its head, Dahl
has organised irrigation to
ensure the plants’ survival.
SPEEDY: In under three
hours 1325 native plants
were successfully planted.
spring
THE BAR-TAILED godwits
have touched down on the
Avon-Heathcote Ihutai Estuary,
landing earlier than usual.
The first newly arriving birds
were spotted on September 9 by
local ornithologist Grahame Bell,
who was checking on the birds at
the request of the city council.
Bell reported a flock of 290
birds, with some still showing
vestiges of red breeding plumage
– which they usually moult prior
to departure from the Arctic.
The birds landed after a six-toeight
day non-stop flight covering
a distance of 11,700km from the
Yukon river delta in Alaska.
City council parks ecologist
Andrew Crossland said this was
the second earliest arrival on record,
two days later than last year.
“Over the next few weeks another
1000+ godwits are expected
to arrive on the estuary,” he said.
“We can also expect additional
flocks of 200-400 arriving elsewhere
in the Christchurch area at
each of the Brooklands Lagoon,
Lyttelton Harbour and Lake
From Eastern Europe to Diamond
• By Sasha Watson
A ‘WEDDING Gowns through
the Ages’ exhibition will display
25 to 30 dresses, including two
Eastern European heritage
wedding gowns.
The exhibition will be held as a
fundraiser for the 30-plus-yearold
Diamond Harbour Medical
Centre, a community-built and
owned building that offers health
services to the district.
Event organisers Robyn Hedges
and Ruth Willis will be
bringing their own
gowns.
“The gown I
wore for my 1969
wedding was
handmade by
me, in New
Zealand. I
also made the
mother-of-thebride
dress and
my
daughter’s wedding gown, about
21 years ago,” said Robyn.
Ruth will be exhibiting
an intricately designed
wedding gown of silk taffeta
from 1878, which was
worn by her great-grandmother
Jessie Dallas
nee Mathieson, at her
wedding.
“It was my family’s wish
that this wedding gown
would be treasured
and shared by the
family’s future
generations,
and not
be
given to a museum,” said Ruth.
The idea for the exhibition
came from the
recent celebration of
Ruth’s 60th
wedding
anniversary.
“I had a
vision to bring
the dresses to a
younger generation,
and thought an
exhibition
of different, older and unique
gowns would be a good way to
fundraise,” she said.
“It has just grown from there.”
Elena Chomic, from Lithuania,
moved to Diamond Harbour
11 years ago with her husband,
Georg. She is showcasing two
Eastern European gowns that
belong to a friend.
“These gowns were bought and
transported from Ukraine in
2018 – they are both unique and
cultural to the urban wedding
gown fashion in the mid-20th
century,” said Elena.
“Eastern European
women used designed
costumes for different
occasions such as
festivals, but the
wedding gown was
more decorated,
interesting,
and
special.”
FIT FOR A BRIDE: Elena
Chomic will present
this handmade Eastern
European wedding gown,
along with a second
gown, at the Wedding
Dresses Through the Ages
exhibition.
Harbour with love
“The gowns were made of linen
and or wool, and are often very
heavy to wear,” said Elena.
She said the history of the
gowns is special, as they were
handmade by the mother and
grandmother together for the
bride.
“The first gown was made for
more than $1000. The second
gown is more plain and simple,
but it is also handmade, with
little beads,” she said.
Elena will also be showcasing
wedding ornaments and decorations
from Lithuania, Romania
and Ukraine.
The exhibition will include
a 60-year-old horseshoe, an
old-fashioned garter, dolls, top
hats, walking sticks, a glory box,
and linen and floral arrangements.
“People who travel from
Europe have different wedding
traditions than that of New
Zealand; they often have made a
special towel – which is used for
bread,” said Elena.
“I am happy to show the
gowns, especially to my friends
and family who have also immigrated
to New Zealand, as they
are a part of my history, heritage
and culture.”
The exhibition also features a
designer gown.
Said Robyn: “We also have a
Laura Ashley dress, a dress from
1912 and another from the
1920s, and a black wedding
gown.”
LITERARY EXPERT Morrin
Rout will be chairing an evening
with best-selling author Charity
Norman, ahead of the launch of
Together We Read for 2023.
Rout, from the Bay Harbour
years organising literary events
and festivals, and presenting
book programmes on radio.
She is the former director of the
Hagley Writers Institute and a
member of the WORD festival
trust board.
Together We Read is New
Zealand’s biggest annual online
book club, connecting readers
through public libraries with a
featured title for two weeks each
year.
As part of the programme,
booklovers can participate in
online discussions and get involved
The digital book club is
now in its second year in New
“I’m thrilled to be invited
to visit Tūranga to spend an
evening with readers, to share
stories and chat with Morrin
Rout,” said Norman.
“Together We Read is a terrific
program – what an honour to be
a part of it.”
Norman’s best-selling novel
is a thriller, following the tale of
a close-knit community, ripped
apart by revelations that shine
the light on a young woman’s
disappearance 25 years earlier.
City council head of libraries
and information Carolyn Robertson
said it was fantastic to be
able to facilitate this part of the
Scattershot - Life, Music, Elton and Me
by Bernie Taupin
“I loved writing, I loved chronicling life and every moment I was cogent, sober,
or blitzed, I was forever feeding off my surroundings, making copious notes as
ammunition for future compositions. . . . The thing is good, bad or indifferent I
never stopped writing, it was as addictive as any drug.” This is the memoir music
fans have been waiting for. Half of one of the greatest creative partnerships in
popular music, Bernie Taupin is the man who wrote the lyrics for Elton John, who
conceived the ideas that spawned countless hits, and sold millions and millions
of records. Together, they were a duo, a unit, an immovable object. Taupin is a
famously private person, has kept his own account of their adventures close to
his chest, until now. Written with honesty and candour, Scattershot is unique and
utterly compelling, and it will transport the reader across the decades and around
the globe, along the way meeting some of the greatest creative minds of the 20th
century, and into the vivid imaginings of one of music’s most legendary lyricists.
INSTORE!
Elon Musk by Walter Isaacson
From the author of Steve Jobs and other bestselling biographies, this is the
astonishingly intimate story of the most fascinating and controversial innovator
of our era-a rule-breaking visionary who helped to lead the world into the era of
electric vehicles, private space exploration, and artificial intelligence. Oh, and
took over Twitter. When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly
beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and
kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a
week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted
by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist. His father’s impact
on his psyche would linger. He developed into a tough yet vulnerable man-child,
prone to abrupt Jekyll-and-Hyde mood swings, with an exceedingly high tolerance
for risk, a craving for drama, an epic sense of mission, and a maniacal intensity
that was callous and at times destructive. This is the revealing inside story, filled
with amazing tales of triumphs and turmoil, that addresses the question: are the
demons that drive Musk also what it takes to drive innovation and progress?
Good from Scratch - Delicious, seasonal recipes
to impress by Michael Van de Elzen
Good From Scratch showcases well-known chef and television presenter Michael
Van de Elzen’s favourite recipes, with dishes perfect for a satisfying after-work
dinner or a long, lazy lunch with friends, in a format that prioritises seasonality.
For spring, think Perfect Roast Chicken with Pickled Fennel, Halloumi and Mint
Emulsion; Grilled Asparagus and Broccoli Tart with Smoked Cheddar and Chilli
Oil; or a Chocolate Creme Brle with Poached Strawberries. Summer sees moreish
dishes such as Ripped Pasta with Summer Tomatoes, Pecorino and Chilli or Potato
Flatbreads with Pancetta and Bocconcini. Come autumn, tastebuds turn to dishes
such as Pumpkin Arancini with Gooey Cheese or a Fig, Caramel and Ginger Loaf.
And finally, winter offers the ultimate Rotisserie Lamb with Chermoula, Lemon
Surprise wins for Sumner surfer
• From page 1
It was a hectic week for the
year 12 Hagley College student,
who won the junior (under-18)
division at the Byron Bay Surf
Festival on August 27, before
jetting off to Melbourne eight
hours later.
The next day, Tyro was back
in the water, and managed to
narrowly win the final of the
Bells Beach Longboard Classic
trials.
Held at Torquay Point, Tyro
scored 6.00 on his first wave
alongside Australian Clinton
Guest. Although Guest moved
into first place with his next two
waves, Tyro claimed the title
with a 6.50 ride to win by 1.05
points.
As a result, Tyro qualified
for the Bioglan Bells Beach
Longboard Classic with a
wildcard.
Tyro said he didn’t realise he
had won until 10 minutes after
the final.
“To think I was even in
consideration for the wild card
spot was overwhelming,” he said.
“Everything I had done had
come down to that moment.”
At the Classic, Tyro finished
third in his heat, scoring 7.10
from his third and fifth waves.
Although he was knocked out
in the elimination round, Tyro
scored an improved 10.00 while
surfing against American Tony
Silvagni to finish 17th.
Tyro was the only New
Zealander to compete at the
event.
His goal for next year is
to qualify on the permanent
roster of the World Surf League
Longboard tour.
Tyro would like to thank
everyone who supported him,
and particularly the Canterbury
Sports Foundation which funded
his flights and accommodation
in Melbourne.
He applied to access the
scholarship fund before the
event, with the goal of qualifying
for the World Surf League.
Tyro is now preparing to head
to the New Zealand national
scholastic surfing championships
in Gisborne next week.
He will be one of 12
Cantabrians at the event where
they will compete for individual
and team honours.
‘Floating fire engines’ prove a
valuable back-up for brigade
In the lead-up to its
150th anniversary
celebration over Labour
weekend, the Lyttelton
Volunteer Fire Brigade
looks back at its past in
a regular column
WATERBORNE back-up -
there’s hardly one major fire
event in Lyttelton over the past
150 years that hasn’t featured it.
From 1879, when the paddlewheel
tug Lyttelton first
practised with the Lyttelton
Volunteer Fire Brigade, these
‘floating fire engines’ have
used their powerful pumps
to provide water pressure
when it was lacking, as well as
valuable assistance during ship
fires – or any land-based blaze
within range of their powerful
monitors.
As you’ll read in the brigade’s
150th anniversary book,
time and time again the harbourmaster
would order the
tugs and dredges into action.
At the huge grain store fire in
1966, the tug’s power was felt
in more ways than one.
At one point the arc of water
from the monitor sailed over
the building, missed the fire
completely and slammed into
the crowd of spectators watching
from Simeon Quay. Some
were knocked off their feet and
others drenched – 3000 litres
of water per minute tends to
do that.
Tugboats, dredges, visiting
warships and even Operation
Deep Freeze icebreakers –
they have all played their part
in the 150-year history of
the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire
Brigade.
Safer speed plan
Way safer for everyone
We’re planning to change speed limits in
Governors Bay, Diamond Harbour settlements
and around Koukourarata Marae.
Lower speeds can save lives and prevent serious injury.
Reducing our speed makes a major difference in a crash.
People make mistakes on our roads, and those mistakes
shouldn’t cost our neighbours, whānau or pets their lives.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency have changed the way
speed limits are set. This gives us an opportunity to plan an
area-wide approach for speed changes.
We’re asking for feedback on our 10-year vision and principles
for safe speeds across Christchurch and Banks Peninsula, as
well as our first three years of implementation.
The Te Kura O Paeraki Mt Pleasant School’s hockey
an outstanding win for the Year 7/8 team, who have
TREASURES FROM THE PAST
Turning sea into land
THE FORESHORE and seabed
of Whakaraupō Lyttelton
Harbour have been significantly
altered by human endeavour
over several phases since the first
days of European settlement.
The bay, which became the
Port of Lyttelton, was shallow
with a sloping foreshore and a
seabed of soft marine sediment.
It would prove a significant challenge
to work with.
The first phase of reclamation
in the 1860s utilised rock and fill
from the excavation of the Lyttelton
Rail Tunnel. The intention
was to extend the waterfront into
deeper water to allow for deep
water jetties so that ships could
berth close to shore, rather than
having to moor at sea. The new
land would support the demands
of increasing numbers of cargo
vessels, with railway yards, goods
sheds and sidings to manage the
movement of freight.
The rail tunnel construction
began in 1860 and was slowed
when rock harder than
anticipated was encountered,
requiring more money to be
raised to attract new contractors.
Successful completion in 1867
was a world first in that the
tunnel was driven through
the rim of an extinct volcano.
It provided a vital link to
Christchurch and the wider
Canterbury region, critical for
development on both sides of
‘the hole in the hill’.
By chance it also solved what
had been a significant challenge
for the fledgling town – a reliable
supply of potable water. A spring
was discovered during construction
near the Lyttelton portal,
which delivered 60,000 welcome
gallons (270,000 litres) of good
quality drinking water.
This period of work included
the construction of a breakwater
at Officer’s Point in 1865 –
named Gladstone Pier after the
first barque, the W.E Gladstone,
to berth there. Situated below
the bluff that from 1876 accommodated
the Timeball Station,
it had been a site for loading
and discharging ballast since
the early 1850s. With the steam
dredge Erskine hard at work in
the inner harbour, other major
capital works undertaken by
the Harbour Board in the 1870s
included the 1883 graving dock
with patent slip alongside, and
the lighthouse erected in 1878 on
the end of Gladstone Pier.
The rail tunnel and
reclamation project resulted in
the burial beneath mountains
of spoil of the Māori fishing
and trading site of Ōhinehou,
which had been in use prior to
European arrival, near what is
now Sutton Reserve on Norwich
Quay.
A Māori hostel was opened in
June 1865 on the reclaimed land,
intended to accommodate those
whose lives had been disrupted
Petrol tanks being built at Lyttelton, May 19, 1927.
Te Ūaka The Lyttelton Museum ref.14625.111
by the reshaping of the foreshore.
This area was named Dampiers
Bay by the English after Christopher
Edward Dampier, solicitor
for the Canterbury Association;
Godley had granted him the
right to ‘squat’ at the northern
end of the attractive bay in 1850.
Significant reclamation work between
1879 and 1883 saw the bay
completely filled in, with Godley
Quay becoming a roadway rather
than an esplanade.
Another reclamation of 29
hectares at Naval Point began in
1909 and was finally completed
in 1925. Once the ‘new’ land
had been left to settle and dry,
road and rail infrastructure was
constructed.
Tanks for the Vacuum Oil and
British Imperial Oil companies
were built by Andersons
engineering company, later
joined by a boldly branded Shell
oil tank. The first bulk tanker to
use the facility was the Lincoln
Ellsworth in October 1928. As
well as diesel and petroleum, the
tanks held bitumen, kerosine
and in later years, jet fuel.
In 1944, Naval Point became
the site of the HMNZS Tasman
shore training station. The
reclaimed land has also been an
important local recreational area
with well utilised playing fields
and the Naval Point Sailing Club.
Risks associated with bulk fuel
storage became apparent in 1961
when a bitumen tank caught fire,
and again in 1985 with an oil
tank explosion. The latter event
resulted in some structures being
moved a safer distance from
the housing nestled on the hills
above Naval Point.
The mud of the harbour would
continue to ‘swallow’ huge
quantities of fill over ensuing
decades. From 1957–1964, rock
from the Gollans Bay quarry was
Reclaimed land at Dampiers Bay, 1899.
used to construct Cashin Quay
container berth, and the dredge
Peraki was hard at work moving
the mud displaced from the
seabed by these works.
In the same period the
Lyttelton Road Tunnel was
under construction, resulting in
more changes to Norwich Quay.
Completed in 1964 the road
tunnel provided another vital
link to the wider region.
Major reclamation works
continue into the present day
under the authority of the
Lyttelton Port Company. In
2019, a 10-hectare area of land
was completed at Te Awaparahi,
made up largely of rubble
from the devastation of the
Canterbury earthquakes.
This expansion has since been
increased by six hectares with
material sourced once again
from the Gollans Bay Quarry.
Continuing major infrastructure
development between 2018–2020
saw the construction of a 148m
long cruise ship terminal at
Gladstone Quay, which involved
driving 64 primary piles 65m
into that infamous soft mud.

The Rise of Spoken Word at
Te Aratai College:
“Word: The Front Line” is an inter-high school
spoken-word poetry competition, bringing together
teams of young people to share their stories in an
explosion of youth expression.
This year was the
first extension of
the event outside
of Auckland, with
the first Canterbury
Poetry Slam event
held at the Piano on
August 22nd. Five
Christchurch schools
were involved, and Te
Aratai proudly entered
a team of 4 students
to this Ōtautahi
inaugural poetic event:
Isabel Marshall-Ma,
Adrian Singh, Georgia
Kieboom and Joseph
Lomani.Word: The
Front Line, curated
by Action Education,
is a poetry slam with the purpose of engaging
and growing the potential of our future leaders.
It is the only creative battlefield of its kind,
equipping young people with poetry prowess
and leadership principles for an opportunity to
battle for themselves and the challenges that
their generation faces. The migration south of
Action Education’s poetry slam competition is
a lucky coincidence for Te Aratai, with the kura
appointment of English teacher Neema Singh,
who recently moved from Auckland. Neema is
originally from Christchurch and moved with her
family to Auckland, where she has taught English
for 8 years at Papatoetoe High School and
Western Springs College.
“I became involved with spoken word in 2013
Isabel and Adrian
during soundcheck
at Papatoetoe.
We entered two
teams into the
Frontline which
was in its second
year at that
stage. It was just
starting out and
sort of grew from
there, it was really
quite cool. One
of my students,
who actually first
competed in the
competition got
really nervous
and could hardly
speak, but now he
is a spoken word
artist who has
a popular Ted Talk online as well as numerous
poems published on YouTube.”
Neema has an affinity for spoken word due to
her own love affair with poetry. She completed
a Master of Creative Writing at the University of
Auckland in 2016 and has since been featured
in two anthologies of published poetry: Ko
AotearoaTatou 2020: We are New Zealand (A
collective response after the mosque attacks
to showcase the diversity of New Zealand
writers and artists) and A Clear Dawn (the first
Teams from Papanui,
Girls’ High, and Haeata
join Te Aratai in a
performance brief
anthology of Asian writers in New Zealand).
Neema also has upcoming poems being
published in The New Zealand Poetry Society
2023 Anthology and He Moana o Reo / An Ocean
of Languages. Her love of poetry and student
expression has been complemented by Dietrich
Soakai, a spoken word artist from South Auckland
who recently moved to Ōtautahi. He, along with
Neema, helped to recruit, tutor and coach the
inaugural Te Aratai spoken word team. “He is
such a dynamic and talented poet, who has a
knack for connecting and inspiring young people.”
“Dietrich had, I think, about four weeks to
prepare the team for the poetry slam, so it was
a huge achievement for our ākonga to write a
poem, memorise it and learn how to perform
and deliver in front of an audience. I think was
such an amazing achievement for them to be
a part of, especially given the vulnerability and
bravery in sharing their personal experiences in
performance. The poetry was funny, engaging
and intelligent. It was an inspiring night to be a
part of.”
Georgia, Joseph
and Adrian before
the event kicks off
NEWS 19
Late payments rise as banks pile
on the mortgage pressure
Rising interest rates are
putting the squeeze on
finances, with a growing
number of homeowners
failing to pay their
mortgages on time.
Diana Clement reports
CREDIT AGENCY Centrix
says 18,800 mortgage accounts
missed a payment in July this
year – a 31 per cent increase on
July last year.
The figures, which are lower
than March when 19,300
accounts were reported as past
due, come amid a new round of
hikes in mortgage interest rates.
ANZ, ASB, BNZ and Westpac
have all bumped up their home
loan rates over the past weeks,
with standard rates for one-year
and two-year terms above 7 per
cent and stretching towards 8 per
cent.
The jumps mean homeowners
who are now rolling onto higher
rates are having to find on
average more than $1200 extra a
month.
For some homeowners, the
cost of servicing their mortgage
could be a lot higher. Centrix
says 240,000 mortgage-holders
in New Zealand owe more than
$500,000 to their lender, with
42,500 owing less than $50,000.
Data released by the Reserve
Bank in July shows that the
number of homeowners adding
to their mortgage, to fund
big ticket purchases or home
renovations, has nearly halved
since 2021.
The value of mortgage top-ups
in the 12 months to July was $7.7
billion, down from $13.6 billion
in the 12 months to July 2021.
It’s a trend that mortgage
advisers are seeing in their dayto-day
work.
Mortgage adviser Neville
Modlin from The Lending Team
said rising interest rates had led
to a decline in top-ups, with
many homeowners worried
about how to meet existing
payments. Other
factors included
an increase
in bank test
rates and the
October national
election. Also
Neville
Modlin
likely to have
had an impact
was Cyclone
Gabrielle and
the Auckland floods, which will
have resulted in some renovation
work requiring top-ups being
covered by insurance claims.
Loanmarket adviser Rodney
King suspects that there may be
an even greater drop off in topups
for renovations such as new
kitchens or extra rooms than the
Reserve Bank
numbers suggest.
“The top ups
we are seeing
[tend] to be for
energy efficient
purposes, such as
hybrid/EV cars,
solar panels or Rodney
double glazing King
to homes, taking
advantage of banks’ various
offers to encourage these loans,”
he said.
However, Jeff Royle, adviser
at iLender.co.nz, thinks some
borrowing has moved from topups
to general
refinance, with
borrowers going
to new lenders
to get cash back
offers or better
terms.
He said that
while there
was not a lot
of difference in interest rates
Jeff Royle
between lenders, there was quite
a difference in how the banks
calculate income.
Campbell Hastie, of Hastie
Mortgages Ltd, said client topups
had dropped off.
“In terms of numbers, it’s
about 40 loans [last year] and
15 loans now, so quite the drop.
Most of these loans are under
$100,000 - more like $20,000 to
$50,000,” he said.
“With interest rates going up
and the cost of living going up,
I think people are more focused
on getting by than trying to do
more. Joe Public has also got
the message that the CCCFA
[Credit Contracts and Consumer
Finance Act] meant their KFC
DEBT: This graph
shows the number
of mortgages in
New Zealand by
debt size. While
only 2.7 per cent of
mortgages are $2
million-plus, just 15
per cent are for less
than $500,000.
habit would kill their chances
of getting a loan. While things
have softened in that regard,
the message is still in people’s
brains,” Hastie said.
“Put those things together
[and there is] less demand for
top ups, and lending full stop.
Are Kiwis focused on paying
their mortgages off instead? Not
as such. Focused on getting by
rather than focused on principal
reduction is probably more
accurate.
“We are seeing more lump
sum payments at refix time
than in previous years, [with]
similar sized amounts to your
average top up, such as $20k
to $50k. People
with cash lying
around are not
spending it: they
are either holding
it in reserve or
dropping it into
Campbell
Hastie
the mortgage
which helps soften
the blow.”
He is also seeing more “green”
loans for hybrid/electric cars or
solar panels. Canstar general
manager Jose George , said
surveys showed New Zealanders
were in a “hunker down” phase
right now.
“If Kiwis do find themselves
with some spare cash, overpaying
the mortgage is a smart move.
Every extra payment makes a
big difference to the interest
ultimately paid over the lifetime
of the loan,” he said.
“There are other ways to
crunch down the mortgage
repayments, too. For example,
if you are coming up for a refix
you can also lower the term of
the mortgage, which has the
effect of increasing payments and
decreasing interest over time.
“Refixing also gives you an
opportunity to repay a bulk
sum without being charged any
break fees. If you do have a bulk
amount you can repay now, it
will be worth checking with your
bank as to any break fees. There
may be none given we’ve been in
a rising interest rate market.
“If you’re nervous about losing
access to extra funds you can
always park them in a term
deposit or savings account. Term
deposit rates are really attractive
right now and offer safe, easy
returns. Given we’re in such a
difficult financial time, this could
well be a good option.”
Open Homes: Sat & Sun 11.00 - 11.30am
Acclaimed design specialists have applied their
expertise to this expansive family sanctuary,
privately poised against the bush-clad hillside
in the coveted coastal quarters of Redcliffs.
Devised by Sheppard and Rout Architects and
solidly constructed from block, the expansive
footprint epitomises spaciousness and
maximises serenity, an attribute that's magnified
by the recently landscaped approx 1867sqm lot
it occupies.
Spread over three well-planned levels, the
functional ground floor features a games room
or potential fourth bedroom, a study and a
double garage with internal access.
The first floor revolves around everyday living,
with wide-spanning windows ushering in
streams of natural light while framing private
and scenic vistas from every perspective.
Beyond the elegantly appointed open-plan
lounge, dining area and kitchen, lies a
secondary living area and an outdoor oasis
masterminded by the renowned landscape
designer Debbie Rimmer.
With an air of tropical sophistication, the
alfresco area is a triumph of design.
Hardwood decking with integrated seating is
complemented by an enclosed area equipped
with an outdoor fire, TV, spa, and surround
sound for top-tier outdoor entertaining.
Finalising the mid-level are everyday essentials,
including a separate toilet and laundry room,
as well as the primary suite, which comes with
an ensuite and walk-in wardrobe. Family
flexibility peaks on the upper floor, topped off
with two more bedrooms, a second bathroom,
and a third living area with lovely estuary views
to enjoy.
With modern styling, everyday comforts and
considerable on-site parking covered, this
property is further enhanced by its superior
location near the heart of Redcliffs with its
picturesque waterfront, selection of shops and
a sought-after primary school.
Sustainable and sporty with a lot of space
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
Mercedes-Benz continues its
push to offer a broader range
of electric models by adding an
EV version of its compact, but
enormously practical, EQB SUV
to its expanding EV portfolio.
The EQB follows in the
footsteps of the smaller EQA
SUV, which alphabetically is a
logical evolution. Since its launch
in 2021, it’s become a popular
choice for those keen to commit
to a more sustainable low
emission vehicle, with premium
looks and an inherently sporty
disposition.
What you get with the EQB is
all that plus lots more space for
people and luggage, in a vehicle
capable of seating up to seven, or
you can reconfigure the cabin to
create a whooping 1600L of load
capacity.
Powering the EQB is an
electric drivetrain developed by
Mercedes-EQ. It’s lithium-ion
battery has a usable energy
content of 66.5 kWh. Weighing a
respectable 469 kg, it’s positioned
beneath the vehicle floor, giving
the EQB an almost ideal centre of
gravity. Re-energizing the battery
is no chore with high charging
speeds with up to 11 kW of
output via the AC (alternating
current) charging system, or
up to 100 kW using DC (direct
current) charger.
Either way, get it tethered to
once of these and it will be fully
electrified before you know it.
The EQB has more in common
than you might think with its
GLB petrol powered sibling,
including plenty of heaps of
useable space from its compact
footprint. With its flat floor and
tall roofline, you are set to cart
all manner of things from bikes
to surf boards.
The most affordable EQB is the
$99,900 five-seat 250. A $2,900
optional third row extends the
seating to seven. A 140 kW
single e-motor dispatches power
directly to the front wheels with
efforts backed up by a hard
working 385 Nm of torque. It has
a handy enough driving range of
371 km according to the WLTP
test standard.
The EQB 350 4MATIC
AWD lined up for this road
test is priced at $109,900.
Both models are covered by a
five-year unlimited kilometre
warranty and an 8 years cover
on the Battery. But wait there’s
more! The EQB has a Type 2
CCS charging socket capable of
accepting up to 11 kW (AC) and
100 kW (DC). Charging cables
compatible with our domestic
power sockets and public
charging stations are standard
with either vehicle.
The EQB model holding all
bragging rights for power and
features is the 350 4MATIC that
also happens to offer the more
SPACIOUS: An optional third row extends seating to seven, so there’s room for everyone.
energized and engaging drive of
this pair. It gets a major leg up
in that department by having
two e-motors, one mounted on
each axle, enabling power to be
sent variably to where it’s most
needed. The floor, the EQB 350
feels both stable and nimble to
drive.
The tall erect styling is
interesting rather than eye
catching. Reduced lines and
precise seams are a feature, while
the upright front section with
its dominant headlights has
Mercedes Benz SUV DNA, all
over it.
The EQB in both guises can
be recharged at home via a
Mercedes-Benz Wall box or
standard 240-volt wall plug.
Our growing network of rapid
and ultra-rapid chargers adds
the option of fast top-ups when
needed while on the move.
Torque and power arrive
instantly no engine revs
required. It makes most internal
combustion engines seem a
tad like yesterday’s technology,
which they probably will be
in about five years. This when
electric vehicles start to tighten
their grip on our market in ways.
The EQB delivers exceptional
performance across the board
and does it with ease, and is
brilliantly supported by two
outstanding electric motors and
a one speed automatic.
This is one the best Mercedes
Benz compact SUVs and sets a
new standard for the its class.
It’s also another example of the
company’s ability to produce
vehicles that tick so many boxes
for potential buyers.
The fit and finish of the
passenger compartment is
excellent. A large and spacious
interior ensures plenty of room
for everyone. The EQB 350
adds significant more features.
Among them are sports seats
with adjustable head restraints
and micro fibre inserts with
red stitching. A multi-function
sports steering wheel wrapped in
Nappa leather, AMG floor mats
and illuminated doorsills, all add
touches of class.
Exterior features play their part
with an electrically controlled
panoramic glass sunroof, AMGspecific
body styling including
extra chrome trim pieces, and
20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels.
A Driver Assistance Package
features a comprehensive suite
of active safety and convenience
systems. Leading the way is
DISTRONIC active cruise
control with Speed Limit Assist
and Active Steering Assist.
The standard Parking Package
includes PARKTRONIC parking
assistant and a 360° camera, and
an electrically operable tailgate
including hands-free access. All
seats are fitted with retractable
head restraints, seat belts with
belt tensioners, a side window
airbag, plus ISOFIX and TOP-
Tether anchorages for suitable
child seats.
As with other vehicles in the
Mercedes-EQ passenger vehicle
line-up, the EQB has acoustic
ambient protection, to reduce the
risk to pedestrians and cyclists
by the vehicle’s silent drivetrain.
It sounds an audible warning
at speeds below 20 km/h, plus a
reversing tone.
Handling is as good as you will
find in a luxury compact SUV
with deep reserves of real world
grip. This isn’t a bona fide offroad
battler with of a high/low
4WD gearbox and the vehicles
modest ground clearance
limiting excursions in rougher
terrain.
For a tallish vehicle body
lean is superbly contained
during brisk cornering, and
driver confidence inspiring
tenacious grip. As expected
the nicely weighted steering
with its excellent road feel was
everything we’ve come to expect
from Mercedes Benz.
Rating out of 10: Performance 8, Handling 8, Build
Quality 8, Refinement 8, Space 8, Styling 6, Value for
money 7, Safety – five star ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 8
Warmer months are just around the corner
That means gardens need to be prepared, repairs and maintenance planned,
Here at our Summerset villages in Christchurch, we’re busy getting the villages
ready too. But our residents don’t need to lift a finger, as we take care of the
chores, leaving them to spend their days how best they wish. Although some
do still love to look after their gardens of course.
