Safety updates in
the works after
incident on bus
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Madison-Plains leaders plan to update the school district’s safety
protocols and procedures following an incident in which a student
found a magazine for a weapon under a school bus seat.
“We have had several meetings among our administrative team
and with law enforcement to discuss the situation that occurred and
what the learning opportunities are there,” said school district Superintendent
Chad Eisler at the Sept. 12 school board meeting.
“We are reaching out to experts and leaders in the field to find
out what they would recommend. We are looking into what best
practices are, and we will be updating our protocols and procedures
and providing training to our staff on these updated protocols and
procedures.”
The incident occurred on the afternoon of Aug. 31 on a school bus
transporting students in grades K-12 home from school. According
to information Eisler posted to the district’s Facebook page the day
of the incident, a student found the magazine for a weapon under
one of the bus seats and gave it to the bus driver. The driver pulled
over to report the matter to school authorities. The district school
resource officer went to the scene to assist and start an investigation.
No weapon was found on the bus. The students and their belongings
were not inspected at that time. Students who were on the
bus were picked up by their parents or
guardians at the location where the bus
pulled over.
On the morning of Sept. 1, students who
were transported to school on the same bus
were asked to exit the bus in a school parking
and place their backpacks and bookbags
in a row in the parking lot. A law enforcement
K-9 officer then examined the bus and
the backpacks and bookbags. No weapons
or ammunition were found. The K-9 officer
also inspected hallway lockers and physical
education lockers in the grades 7-12 building.
The Madison-Plains administrative
team visually inspected the hallway lockers
at the grades K-6 building. Nothing was
found in either inspection.
As of Sept. 18, Eisler said no new information
had been uncovered about the incident.
It is not known how the magazine
ended up on the bus or to whom it belonged.
It was a beautiful morning for a bike ride. The skies
were clear, and the temperature was crisp but comfortable.
A food truck serving coffee was percolating in the
parking lot. At the shelter house, volunteers were laying
out t-shirts and medals and taking registrations.
Not far away, more volunteers were setting up a facepainting
station and scoping out a spot for a photo
booth. All the while, people were pulling in with bicycles
in or attached to their vehicles.
It was the start of the 5th Annual David Flowers
Memorial Bike Tour, held Sept. 16 on the Prairie
Grass Trail in London. The start/finish line was located
at the trailhead behind the Madison County
30-mile distances for the out-and-back ride.
Organizer Penny Flowers welcomed riders to the
event which honors her late husband who passed
away in a car accident in 2018. David Flowers had
been a pastor at London Grace. He was known for his
quiet leadership, humor, and love of sports.
“He just was a giving person, and he was all about
family,” Penny said.
Penny chose to honor David’s memory with a bike
tour because he had started riding with his sons-inlaw
as a way to bond with them and encourage them.
She chose to commit the tour’s proceeds to a college
scholarship because David had been looking to get his
degree in ministry.
“We want to help others be able to
achieve what he could not,” she said.
Along with her family members and
other volunteers, Penny recognized the bike
tour’s first scholarship recipient at the start
of this year’s tour. Abbey Patterson, a London
High School graduate, is putting the
$1,000 award to use as a freshman majoring
in education at Cedarville University.
Penny said that in the coming years she
hopes to add a second charitable component
to the tour, dedicating some of the proceeds
to helping families with multiple children
cover registration for youth sports.
“It can be expensive if you have more
than one kid involved,” Penny said.
The bike tour takes place the third Saturday
of September, putting it near David’s
birthday (Sept. 17).
Need for bus drivers continues at Madison-Plains
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Madison-Plains Local Schools continues to seek applicants
for bus driver and substitute bus driver positions.
At their regular meeting on Sept. 11, school board
members accepted the resignation of a person who
trained to be a bus driver but then decided the job
wasn’t for them. School board president Mark Mason
asked Superintendent Chad Eisler for an update on the
district’s bus driver situation.
“We’re doing OK. We have enough to drive the routes
we have right now. If we have an absence, our transportation
supervisor or our mechanic drives the route,” Eisler
said, adding that the district recently posted job openings
for additional bus drivers and substitute drivers.
“It remains a need. I have said it before: there is a
national shortage. It is a difficult job, and we need good
people to do it,” he said.
In other discussion, Eisler reported that progress is
being made on updates to the high school auditorium.
The district has placed an order to replace all of the
seats, several of which have broken over the years. The
project also will include updates to the lighting and carpeting,
as well as a new coat of paint on the walls.
“The auditorium has been in need of updating for a
long time. We believe the time is now to do that,” Eisler
said.
During the business portion of the meeting, the
school board approved several field trips:
• FFA Chapter members in grades 10-12 attended
the Farm Science Review in London on Sept. 20 to tour
the 100-acre exhibit area, see new agriculture-related
products and machinery, and attend educational sessions
on a variety of topics.
• Students in grades 10-11 who are in good standing
will participate in a trip to Philadelphia and New York
The London Rotary Club is pleased to
honor senior Gracie Stingle as Madison-
Plains High School’s September Student of
the Month.
Students of the month are selected by
school administrators based on their academic
and extracurricular achievement and
positive character.
Gracie has a 4.2 grade point average and
she is ranked first in her class. Her favorite
course is animal and plant science, one of
the agricultural education courses at Madison-Plains.
Gracie has been in FFA all four
years of high school, earning her Greenhand
and Chapter degrees. Additionally,
during her junior year, she was awarded first place in
equine science placement for FFA.
Gracie has earned her varsity letter as a member of
the soccer team. She is a three-year member of Key
Club, and she has been in National Honor Society since
her sophomore year.
Outside of school, Gracie rides horses competitively
in the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA), an
activity in which she has participated for eight years.
The past two years, she has been Reserve World Champion
in the 14-18 age division, among many other
achievements. She also was elected as an NRHA youth
delegate for two years in a row.
When asked which Madison-Plains staff member inspires
her, Gracie said, “A school staff member who is
an inspiration to me is Miss (Molly) Niese because she
is a great person in every aspect. I’ll start with her
teaching skills: I do not know a teacher that better lays
out the format of her class and the lesson plans. Even
the toughest topics within her subjects can be mastered
by the way she teaches. She is a teacher who truly
member who inspires him, Alex named Roy
Greenlee, Spanish teacher, instructional
coach, and high school tennis coach.
“Mr. Greenlee has encouraged me to
be myself and to be a better person while in
class, on the tennis court, and outside of
school,” Alex said.
About Alex, Greenlee said, “I have
worked with Alex both as a coach and
extremely dedicated to participating in
sports and academics but truly strives to
improve his skills through hard work and
constant revision. He is very open to feedback
and not afraid to challenge himself if it means that
improvements are possible. Alex also participated in our
a deep appreciation for the culture and was a great addition
to the group.”
Gracie Stingle
teaches. She will help anyone who comes in
to ask for help on a topic, or even for questions
that do not pertain to a subject being
taught in class.
“She knows how much support to give
her students—not too much to allow them to
do the thinking and learning, but enough to
allow them to fully figure out the concept.
The passion that she has for her kids, animals,
and this world is a level that I seek to
have. The selflessness that she has to teach
her students and the dedication to her job
will really generate great people that will
one day make a difference in London and
beyond.”
Regarding Gracie, Niese said, “Gracie is an exemplary
student within the Madison-Plains community.
What inspires me most about Gracie is her capacity to
advocate for herself, as well as her relentless quest for
knowledge. Gracie has a long list of positive attributes,
but I believe these two qualities will bring her much
success after graduating from Madison-Plains.”
After graduation, Gracie plans to attend the University
of South Carolina, as she has verbally committed
to riding on their equestrian team. She plans to pursue
a bachelor’s degree in environmental science, minoring
in both business and psychology. From there, she is considering
transferring to get a master’s degree. She
would love for her future career to fulfill her craving to
help the environment.
Preplanning
offers peace
of mind
Continuously serving the community since
1908, Eberle-Fisher Funeral Home and Crematory
in London offers a knowledgeable and caring
approach to not only at-need funeral
arrangements but also for prearranged services.
Preplanning your funeral, memorial service,
or celebration of life can be one of the
most valuable gifts to your loved ones and to
yourself. There is an old saying: “The palest
ink is better than the best memory.”
While offering peace of mind knowing that
you are looking out for the needs of yourself
and your family, preplanning your services allows
you to make the important decisions
without the added burden of grief and sense
of emergency that comes with death. When a
service is not preplanned, grieving family
members can make hasty and impulsive
choices, and often are left to speculate regarding
wishes of the deceased.
Preplanning allows you to make thoughtful
choices that are meaningful, personalized, and
prudent, and confirms that your wishes will
be honored. If desired, prearranging also allows
options for prepaying which not only reduces
financial burden, but also provides
guaranteed pricing until services are needed.
For any questions, information regarding
preplanning, or to schedule a time with our directors,
please feel free to contact us at (740)
852-2345.

County Senior Center is a vibrant hub of activity
There was a time when being a “senior”
meant sitting in the proverbial rocking chair
and watching the world go by.
“Today’s seniors aren’t watching the world
go by. They’re out there living life–going on
trips, going out to dinner, hanging out with
friends,” said Misty Bradley, executive director
of the Madison County Senior Center
where anyone over the age of 55 can be a
member and enjoy a wide range of activities.
“Why 55? Well, it seems like a great age
to decide what kind of older person you want
to be–the ‘then’ senior or the ‘now’ senior,”
Bradley said. “Personally, I plan on being the
‘now’ senior and hope you join us so we can
help you be that senior, too.”
Located at 280 W. High St. in London, the
Madison County Senior Center is a vibrant resource
for recreational and social activities, as
well as services aimed at helping seniors to
live independently for as long as possible.
Membership is just $15 per year for singles
or $25 per year for couples. Members can stop
in Monday-Friday to exercise on their own in
the nicely appointed workout room or join
group sessions for aerobics, yoga, and chair
volleyball. Other activities include quilting,
billiards, painting classes, cards (bridge and
euchre), movies, and chimes.
Tips for strength training
A balanced diet and exercise, which includes
a combination of aerobic activities and
strength training, is necessary to maintain
long-term health.
According to the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention, regular physical activity
is one of the most important things older
adults can do to protect their overall health.
Exercise helps to delay or prevent many of the
conditions that come with age. Adults ages 65
and older should aim for the recommended
150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity
activity, such as brisk walking, and at least
two days of activities that strengthen muscles.
When it comes to muscle strengthening, seniors
can follow these safety guidelines as they
embark on their strength-training journeys:
• Speak with a healthcare provider first.
Get the green light to proceed with an exercise
regimen before beginning by having a discussion
with your general practitioner about your
fitness goals. Your doctor can recommend
strategies that are safe and point out any exercises
that may compromise your overall health.
• Master basic exercises first. Anyone
new to strength training, which is sometimes
known as resistance training, can start out
slowly, even using just body weight, to provide
resistance. Resistance exercises can include
squats, crunches, modified pushups,
planks, and lunges.
• Graduate to resistance bands. When
you're ready to move on to something else,
consider resistance bands as an alternative to
free weights. The bands can help you develop
good form before introducing weight. Good
form is key to avoiding injury.
• Work with a trainer. Working with a certified
personal trainer can help you learn how
to use free weights and strength-training machines
correctly. A trainer also can create a
routine that includes the right number of sets
and repetitions to gradually build and maintain
muscle mass. If you decide against hiring
a trainer, gym staff members may guide you
through equipment and demonstrate proper
form.
• Exercise with a friend. Strength training
with a friend or family member can provide
motivation and keep you on target to meet
your goals.
• Build up gradually. Your first strength
session should only last 10 to 15 minutes.
This enables you to gauge soreness. Wait until
soreness abates before beginning your next
session if you are new to strength training.
Strength exercises are a vital part of maintaining
health as a senior. Such exercises help
maintain muscle mass and also improve balance
and bone health.
tailing special programs and events. Group
trips to dinner theaters, restaurants, museums,
ball games, shopping centers, and historical
locations are especially popular. The center
also coordinates multi-day trips to destinations
in the United States and other countries.
The cafe is another great amenity and is
open to the public. The cafe serves hot lunches
Monday-Thursday, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. The cost
per meal is $6 for diners who are 55 or older
and $6.50 for diners who are under 55.
Services available to seniors who are 60 or
older include the adult day center, assistance
with utility payments when funds are available,
and transportation. Drivers can transport
seniors to just about anywhere they need to go,
from doctor appointments to the grocery store.
The center also offers diabetes, grief, and
Alzheimer’s disease support groups, as well
as a wellness clinic.
“Every month at the end of my director’s
letter, I say thank-you for the laughter I hear
here every day,” Bradley said. “This place
brings so much joy to so many seniors. It is
my great honor to be the director of the Madison
County Senior Center.”
