We invest heavily in getting the best
teachers and we have specialist
science teachers in Year 7 from day
one. In addition, some of our teachers
also teach at Abbeygate sixth form.
We have a strong relationship with
the University of Cambridge to bring
in the best new recruits into the
profession.
Our students are capable of
exceptional results and via Abbeygate
we get students into Oxbridge,
Medicine and Russell Group
Universities most years.
Despite celebrating top academic
achievement, we are proud of every
learner and enjoy high levels of
success each year via vocational
pathways and students who
overcome significant barriers to
learning. We are a proudly inclusive
school and believe all learners benefit
from our inclusive approach.

We are passionate about providing a wide range of
sporting opportunities. We have an extensive range of
sports teams and fixtures and regularly win tournaments
at West Suffolk, County and even National levels.
Outdoor adventuring can be a life
changing experience and we run a
comprehensive Duke of Edinburgh
program every year at Silver and
Bronze level.

We have a wide range of music
groups and offer tuition in a
large number of instruments.
Our Foundation generously
supports students to learn
instruments free of charge
every year.
We realise that school plays can
be one of the most memorable
moments of an education
and we have a long history of
excellence in the Arts at King
Edwards.
Co-Curriculum
We believe that a strong extra-curricular offer is the life and soul of a school.
That is why we prioritise these activities for our Co-Curriculum.

Debating and
Critical Thinking
Our student-led Debating Club develops
critical thinking and public speaking.
We meet weekly to debate topics from
climate change to moral truth.
Super Curriculum
We provide extra academic challenge across all subjects to push our strongest
learners. In mathematics this ranges from teaching Further Mathematics in GCSE
to UKMT Association Olympiads. In English we enter Shakespeare competitions
and run a student magazine.

We compete in various
competitions such as maths,
coding, design and drama.
We are always looking for
ways to stretch and challenge
our students.
Independent learning challenges
We are keen to support students wherever possible to learn beyond the
normal school curriculum and to develop a love of learning which will
prepare them for success beyond formal schooling.

A great school is not just great
facilities, it’s the people within.
This is why we focus on developing
our sense of fun and community
through House activities. All
students are assigned a House
upon arrival and encouraged to
take part in House competitions.
To give our students access to the
best possible careers support.
We have a full-time Careers Coordinator
who works closely
with Abbeygate and West Suffolk
College. This ensures that every
student has an exciting future
beyond their time with us.
We believe that all students should
have the opportunity to embrace other
countries and cultures to inspire interest,
understanding and respect. Our students
benefit from a number of foreign trips.

Life Curriculum
School is not just about academic subjects. It is also about preparing for
life. We teach Personal, Social, Health and Economics Education across
KS3 in small classes aimed at generating discussion and deep exploration
of social issues. We also teach citizenship and encourage students in KS4
to think about Big Questions.
We are passionate about food and teach all KS3
students essential life skills such as cooking.
We also encourage healthy eating through our
locally sourced healthy menu available to our
students and prepared by our own Head Chef.

Leadership
We provide many opportunities for student leadership at King Edward VI. Every
form elects a Form Representative each year who attends the Year Council. We
regularly listen to the views of our students.

Pastoral Care
We know that students must be happy in order to learn successfully.
Our students receive support in the following ways:
• Every child has a Form Tutor
• Every child has a Head of Year
• Full time non-teaching Pastoral Support Managers in every year group
• Safeguarding Officer
• Mental Health Hub support
• Specialist Year 7 transition team
