BLUE PANTHER
GOLF TOURNAMENT

CHAIRMANS WELCOME
It’s my pleasure to welcome everybody to our
inaugural “Blue Panther” Scramble. I also
want to take the opportunity to thank all who
have come out to support this event, by
entering teams and playing and to thank
those who have supported it with
sponsorship. I also want to thank the
Templeogue Synge Street GAA Club
Fundraising team especially Ben Mannering,
Brian Scully, Matt O’Dell and Seamus McGrath,
who have made today happen.
Its been a few years since Templeogue Synge
Street GAA club hosted a golf event, and we
were delighted when the O’Toole family
agreed that we could honour Anton by naming
the event in his honour. The irony of that is
the limelight would probably not have sat
comfortably on his shoulders. Anton would,
without doubt, have much preferred to
discretely play and compete in a golf
tournament.
The Chinese philosopher Confucius said,
“Those of you who drink the water, remember
those who dug the well.“ As you all know,
Anton was an integral part of the famous
1970’s and 1980’s Dublin team that
transformed Dublin’s football fortunes.
“Transformed” is only one word that could be
used in that sentence, “saved”, “built”,
“rejuvenated” could all be swapped in there.
That team dug the foundations on which the
current success in Dublin GAA is built.
Anton retired from playing football in 1984,
aged 33, and for the following 33 years he
jointly (with fellow Dublin legend Brian
Mullins) held Dublin’s record number of All
Ireland Senior football medals, 4. This record
was equalled in 2015 and surpassed the
following year by a Dublin team that broke all
of the records.
It is fitting that Anton’s influence on Dublin
football did not finish in 1984. Anton twice
managed our club’s men’s senior team.
Firstly, in the early 1990s, and then a second
time in 2008-10, where his influence on a
young Eoghan O’Gara and less young Denis
Bastick had a hugely positive effect on both
players, collecting a dozen All Ireland medals
between them. His influence continues to this
day in our club with his nieces Laura and
Niamh Leacy both playing on our Ladies first
team.

On a much more modest personal scale, I can
say it was the Dublin win in 1983 - with Anton
starting at full forward - that was the initial
carrot to lure me into Dolphin Park. I can
remember Donal Colfer bringing Anton to talk
to us as kids at training one day, he was 10 ft
tall and could kick the ball over the bar from
miles back, we all just wanted to do what he
did. It’s fair to say that without Anton doing
what he did, I would not be involved in
Templeogue Synge Street GAA club today.
Anton, thanks for being part of the well
digging team.
There was of course so much more to Anton
than the football legacy which he wore so
lightly. An extremely knowledgeable and
intelligent man that carried all of that with
extraordinary ease. A great conversationalist,
once comfortable in your company. But for
years he would probably prefer to spend an
afternoon at Leopardstown racecourse than
he would at golf, but his good friend Gerry
O’Leary made sure Anton eventually got
familiar with golf and the good walk was not
spoiled.
I hope you all have a good day on the course
today and none of you have a good walk
spoiled.
On behalf of Templeogue Synge Street GAA
Club, thank you all for your support today and
best of luck in the Blue Panther Scramble.
Chairman
