The Wall Between Roger and David
BY RELUCTANT GENIUS
Once upon a time, in the vibrant world of rock music, there existed a band that would forever change the
landscape of the genre. This band was none other than Pink Floyd. Led by the creative genius of David
Gilmour and Roger Waters, they captivated audiences with their unique sound and thought-provoking
lyrics. However, behind the scenes, a tempestuous storm was brewing, threatening to tear the band apart.
Pink Floyd was formed in London in 1965, initially consisting of Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, Richard Wright,
and Nick Mason. Their early years were marked by experimentation and psychedelic sounds, with Barrett's
whimsical songwriting leading the way. However, as Barrett's mental health deteriorated, David Gilmour
was brought in as a replacement guitarist in 1968.
With Gilmour's arrival, the band underwent a transformation, blending their psychedelic roots with a more
progressive rock sound. This new direction propelled Pink Floyd to unprecedented heights of success, with
albums like "The Dark Side of the Moon" and "Wish You Were Here" becoming iconic masterpieces.
However, as the band's fame grew, so did the tensions between Gilmour and Waters. Both possessed strong
personalities and creative visions, leading to clashes over the direction of Pink Floyd's music. Waters, known
for his introspective and politically charged lyrics, wanted the band to focus more on concept albums and
social commentary. Gilmour, on the other hand, favored a more melodic and guitar-driven approach.
The breaking point came during the recording of Pink Floyd's
eleventh studio album, "The Final Cut," released in 1983. Waters,
feeling increasingly frustrated with the band's dynamics, sought to
assert his dominance by taking full control of the album's
production. This move alienated Gilmour and the rest of the band,
leading to a bitter dispute.
Following the release of "The Final Cut," Waters announced his
departure from Pink Floyd, believing the band had run its course.
Gilmour, however, was determined to carry on, and with the
support of Wright and Mason, he continued to tour and record
under the Pink Floyd name.
The split between Waters and Gilmour was acrimonious, with legal battles over the rights to the band's
name and music. Despite the animosity, both artists went on to have successful solo careers, showcasing
their individual talents.
In 2005, the remaining members of Pink Floyd, including Waters, Gilmour, Wright, and Mason, reunited
for a one-off performance at the Live 8 concert in London. This historic event marked a temporary truce
between the warring factions, as they put aside their differences for the sake of the music they had
created together.
THE MOVIE REVIEW
A FILM BY CHRISTOPHER NOLAN
REVIEW BY PAUL MARINO*
Christopher Nolan's latest masterpiece, the massive, $100 million budget, 3 hour epic, “Oppenheimer”, a biopic of J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian
Murphy), “The Father of the Atomic Bomb”. As of this writing, it's grossed $720 million in the 33 days since its soſt opening on July 20. Nolan also
wrote the screenplay, which he adapted from Kai Bird & Martin J. Sherwin's 2005 biography of Oppie, American Prometheus, for which they won a
Pulitzer the following year.
The metaphor is explained in a caption over the opening scene: “Prometheus stole fire from the gods and gave it to man. For this he was chained to a
rock and tortured for eternity.” The metaphor is obvious. The American Prometheus harnessed the power of the universe, and for this, as he translates
from the Hindu scripture Gita for the beautiful U.S. Communist Jean Tatlock (Florence Pugh): “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.” Jean
finds the book on a shelf in his bedroom. It's written in Sanskit, an ancient language of India and it's surrounding countries/areas, and she selects the
passage randomly. The prize for teaching himself Sanskrit (as well as German, Dutch and French) when he wasn't busy with theoretical quantum
physics, was to read her that passage while they had sex. I've included a jpg of the word Sanskit written in Sanskrit with this review to give you an idea
of the depth of this hobby. He has an on-and-off affair with Jean, who struggles with her mental health.
As you can tell by that one example, Oppenheimer is a very smart film, about a very complex topic, which breaks those concepts down in a fascinating,
entertaining & pedagogical way. Another comes when his future wife Kitty (Emily Blunt) asks him to explain quantum mechanics as he flirts with her.
His answer is like the 600 odd words of this review with respect to the page/cyber-page on which they are domiciled: “Well, this glass, this drink, this
counter top, uh, our bodies, all of it; it's mostly empty space. Groupings of tiny energy waves bound together...[by the]...Forces of attraction strong
enough to convince us [that] matter is solid; to stop my body passing through yours.” He similarly explains a black hole, which is Grateful Deadically
referred to in the example as a Dark Star.
The tale is told retrospectively, post-World War II, during the height of the Cold War, as Oppenheimer is questioned by the AEC (Atomic Energy
Commission) and its Chairman, Retired Admiral Lewis Strauss (Robert Downey Jr.). Simultaneously, Strauss is being questioned in his Senate
confirmation hearing aſter being nominated by President Eisenhower for Secretary of Commerce. The two are at odds from the very start, when Strauss
recruits Oppenheimer for a post at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study, where Einstein (Tom Conti) works. Oppenheimer calls his Mr., not Admiral,
Strauss, who corrects him and tells him he pronounces his name “Straws”; to which Oppenheimer replies: “Ah-penheimer, Oh-penheimer. No matter
how you say it they know I’m Jewish.” *
Most of the film is in color, from Oppie's point of view. When another character's POV is needed, it's in black & white, some of which
is shot in IMAX, the first film to be shot utililzing IMAX black & white. It covers Oppenheimer's life: from 1926 as a doctoral
candidate at Cambridge; to the bulk of the action, when he was the technical lead of the Manhattan Project, creating the Atomic
Bomb; through his turmoil and blacklisting for his opposition to the H-Bomb. Others in the large, great cast include: Matt Damon
as General Leslie Groves, Director of the Manhattan Project; Kenneth Branagh as Nobel Prize winning physicist Niels Bohr; Casey
Affleck as Army Intelligence Officer Boris Pash; Bennie Safdie as Edward Teller, “The Father of the Hydrogen Bomb”; and Gary
Oldman as President Harry S. Truman.
Oppenheimer, arguably the best film of the year, is still playing in theaters. You don't have to understand quantum mechanics or
nuclear physics to love this movie. It's like music. “The important thing isn't can you read music, it's can you hear it. Can you hear
the music, Paulie?”
* Paul is the host for The Hub on Canal's monthly Art in the Form of Film series. The Hub on Canal is a non-profit art gallery/
collective in New Smyrna Beach FL. His shows are sponsored by the New Smyrna Beach restaurant, Chases on the Beach.
BACKSTAGE
TALES
ByLesKippel
Like a Box of Rain or a Moth Before a Flame Where does a musician get inspiration from?
It's not just writing the song or putting it on a record, or internet, what about PERFORMING
the song? Many times an Artist releases it for 'public consumption', but doesn't perform it in
public! What gives a Performer the 'push' to perform a song on stage? Some reasons for
performing can come from the strangest of places!
The Grateful Dead have always played 4 and 5 hour concerts and
always wanted to play with new musicians and try new songs. One of
the more unusual inspirations came outside of a Grateful Dead
concert in Waterbury Connecticut, September 24, 1972., I just got back
from a trip to Amsterdam, and brought back some small match boxes!
(imagine trying to bring something like that on a plane today)!
I went up to see the Grateful Dead in Waterbury Connecticut with
some friends. My friends, Joyce Carr and RT., were amazed at how
the Grateful Dead hadn't played the song "BOX OF RAIN" in a long
time! The song was written in 1970 by Robert Hunter. We wrote on the
box of matches, "LIVE BOX OF RAIN" with a drawing of rain drops, put a Dobbie into the box, and were walking
around outside the concert venue when we saw Phil Lesh, walking around in front of the theater, totally
amazed at how many people where there to see the band! We walked up to Phil, and I asked Phil, "Phil, have
you ever seen a live Box of Rain? Of course, Phil gave us a look of "HUH!!" . . . Then we pulled out our "Live Box
Of Rain' and gave it to him! You should have seen the look on his face!!
We had no idea where this encounter would go, but the door was now open! AND, wow! it did hit home! Two
days later, September 26, 1972 The Grateful Dead were playing at the Stanley Theater in Jersey City, New
Jersey. We had Sound Check passes and were in the Orchestra Pit, something that doesn't exist in theaters
anymore, and all of a sudden, the band starts to rehearse "Box of Rain"! WOW! We knew it was because of us,
no one else knew.. but it was only a sound check. What would become of our Box? The song was rehearsed at
the Spectrum in Phila, PA a few days later and was finally brought out live 2 weeks later in San Francisco!
