Welcome!
Hi everyone!
This booklet has been made to help you learn more about the wide variety of
societies which Trinity has to offer. Joining societies here at Trinity is a great way
to relax and make new friends, as well as to get involved with something you are
really passionate about. There are so many to choose between, from all the sports to
the Music Society and the Oriental Society.
At the beginning of Michaelmas term, there will be a societies fair called Chaplains’
Squash, where you can speak to the current captains/committee members, get to
know a bit more about what they do and sign up to their mailing lists. You can also
find a full list of Trinity societies on the TCSU website.
There is also the University Freshers’ Fair where you will find more societies that
may interest you. If you think there is a society missing, you can start one from
scratch and apply for funding from Trinity. For more information on this, email
Saksham, the TCSU Junior Steward (junior-steward@tcsu.net), or check the
TCSU website.
So go ahead, sign up for as many societies as you want and don’t forget to enjoy
your time here at Trinity!
1. Societies
This chapter contains a summary of all of the non-sporting societies available in
Trinity College. The best way to join a society is to sign up for its mailing list at
Chaplains’ Squash. However, you’re welcome to join any society at any point in the
year, so don’t stop yourself from getting involved just because you heard about
something too late!
If you feel like there’s a hole in the list of societies that you’d like to help fill,
contact societies@tcsu.net to learn how to set one up!

AMR in order to try and facilitate wider cultural change surrounding the
stewardship of our medications

Chess
Trinity College Chess Club is welcoming new members! All chess enthusiasts are
welcome, from very beginners to experienced players. Don’t hesitate to get in touch.
We will try to set up an initial meet up in October and play some games. As for
competitions, last year in Lent term Trinity won the Cambridge University chess
league and we are looking to defend our title! We also have a 2nd team which
finished as runners up in division 2! But with some of our players graduating, there
are vacant spots to be filled in... :-)

Christian Union
If you’re looking for Christian community or just exploring, you can expect a warm
welcome at Trinity’s Christian Union. We’re part of the Cambridge Inter-Collegiate
Christian Union, which exists to give every student the chance to hear and respond
to the good news about Jesus. Find us in the BBCR at 19.30 on a Wednesday (or at
dinner before!), for Bible discussion, prayer, and a relaxed space to ask questions.

Craft Club
The Craft Club is a fun, chill place where you can relax after a long day of lectures
with any arts & crafts related activity; crochet, knitting, embroidery, and so on.
Some of us even repair and sew clothes! Absolutely NO skill level is required; if
you’re completely new to something we know, we can teach you! And if you want
to try some craft that none of us have experience in, we’d be more than happy to
learn with you :) We always have warm baked goods to keep us toasty when doing
our crafts. So what are you waiting for?
Contact Eric to join! We meet once every week, in the evenings.

Economics Society
The Trinity Economics Society, open to all members of College, is designed to
support students involved in anything economics and finance-related. From social
events like Big Short movie nights and bowling, to CV and Spring Week support
from those who have gone through the pain, we got you covered. The best part:
there’s always food or free activities involved.
For you Economics students, we also have regular peer-to-peer Tripos and career
advice sessions. The cherry on top? A 1st year handbook, along with a lecturer and
supervisor database, that tells you all you need to know to ace your degree. Try to
game it all you want, but we’re telling you the solution to this Nash equilibria:
joining TES is your best response.

Engineering Society
The Trinity College Engineering Society (TCES) brings together all the engineers
of Trinity College, and is open to students from all subjects! We organise many
social events throughout the year, and previous events have included barbecues,
formal swaps, garden parties, and go-karting races, as well as speakers’ events from
an engineer working in the atomic weapons sector, and talks from Prof. Hugh Hunt
on climate engineering. As one of the biggest societies at Trinity, TCES provides
many opportunities for networking with other engineers from Trinity and other
colleges, along with academics and professional engineers!
Please head to our Instagram (@trinityengineeringsoc) or Facebook
(@TrinityCollegeEngineeringSociety) page to check out our past events and stay
up-to-date about our upcoming events! All engineers at Trinity are automatically
added to our mailing list, but non-engineers are more than welcome to join! Be sure
to find us at Chaplain’s Squash to speak to our committee members, and to join our
mailing list! Looking forward to having you on board!

Trinity College Law Society (TCLS) offers a wide range of opportunities to engage
with the law as a member of college. We offer social opportunities (within the
college law community, and, excitingly, with legal professionals), careers talks, and
other events. TCLS has a long history - it was around before some of the new(er)
bits of college and has produced a number of successful alumni. We hope to
continue this tradition and look forward to new members benefiting from it.

Magpie and Stump
Surprisingly enough, going by the reputation of its students, Trinity’s oldest society
is not the Trinity Mathematical Society but its comedy society. Magpie and Stump
was founded in 1866 as a debating society, with the son of Charles Darwin as a
founding member.
It seems clear to us that the Trinity student body is on a trajectory of becoming
funnier each year, as demonstrated by Magpie’s evolution from debating society to
‘humorous debating society’ (by the early 20th century) to the hub of comedians and
performers it is today, putting on comedy shows and funding up-and-coming
comedians and writers at the ADC and in Cambridge. This is a view that sits very
well with current members. Although the society is no longer the pipe-smoking
men’s club it was back when Bertrand Russell and King George VI were members,
it remains an active society that puts on monthly writing groups and welcomes any
member of College who is interested in writing, performing or watching comedy.

Mathematical Society
Are you excited to discuss new ideas at the cutting edge of mathematical research?
Ever wondered why (almost) every mathmo loves brown bread ice cream?
The Trinity Mathematical Society was founded in 1919 by Hardy with an aim to
"promote the discussion of subjects of mathematical interest". More than a century
later, we are (we believe) the oldest surviving subject society at any British
university. We host talks every Monday, where we invite mathematicians from
across the world to discuss their research. In the past, we have hosted Hardy,
Conway, Bollobás, Atiyah, Davenport, Wittgenstein, Susskind and many more. We
also organise a range of social events, most famously our Annual Dinner and our
annual cricket match against the Adams Society at John’s.
As one of the oldest societies, we also hold a certain degree of fascination for our
traditions of dropping apples, "Call My Bluff" and Trinity’s famous brown bread ice
cream...

Music Society
Welcome to Trinity! This college is home to the most active music society in
Cambridge, running around five events each week in term. Whether you’re keen to
play or just listen, we’ve got something for everyone. A typical week will see
various solo and chamber recitals in the Old Combination Recitals, various larger
concerts in our chapel’s stunning acoustic, and live jazz on Sunday evening in the
bar. Most of our concerts are completely free, so please do come along—we look
forward to meeting you!
A select few of our larger concerts are paid for non-members to cover various costs.
However, membership costs only £11 for your entire time as a student, or £20 for
life. You also get access to the May Week Show, Wren Library Concert, and TCMS
Garden Party, so together with all the other concerts, we feel this is a bargain.
We’re a large and friendly committee and always happy to chat to people about
music at this college and university—please do come and say hi at our upcoming
meet-the-committee on the 2nd October!

South Asian artefacts in the Wren library. Be sure to sign up to our mailing list to

Ever played basketball before? Want to actually play the sport in this town? Not
good enough to make the university team? If these ring true, we are effectively your
only option to consistently play basketball. We play twice a week on a booked
indoor court on top of games against the other colleges during the weekends, so it is
the ultimate casual basketball environment. There’s no need to know how to play

play.

glorious finals day in 2023. We hope that you will be part of our exciting prospects
for the year ahead and join us in bringing home the coveted Cuppers trophy.

Christs’ Rugby Union Football Club
In hallowed fields where grass and passion meet,
Stands Trinity, with heartbeats strong and fleet.
Beneath the azure sky and roaring crowd,
Their spirit, fierce and bold, they’ve ever vowed.
From early dawn, when mist still clings to ground,
Their dedication, unwavering, is found.
The scrum, the tackle, the triumphant try,
For every fallen mate, they reach the sky.
Through rain and mud, their journey does unfold,
A tale of warriors, brave and uncontrolled.
The ball in hand, they dash, they weave, they soar,
A dance of strength and grace, of lore and more.
Their jersey, more than fabric, it’s a sign,
Of camaraderie, a bond that does entwine.
From fresh-faced youth to seasoned veteran’s gaze,
Together, they face every challenge, every blaze.
The roar of fans, like mighty ocean’s wave,
For Trinity’s warriors, the bold and brave.
Their legacy, an ever-growing flame,
In the annals of Rugby, they carve their name.
Remembered are the battles, wins, and strife,
But more so, the lessons, the love, the life.
37
For in this game, it’s more than just a score,
It’s unity, it’s family, it’s evermore.
So here’s to Trinity, with pride so true,
A beacon for the sport, forever to ensue.
Rugby’s essence, in their very core,
Forever Trinity, now and evermore.

First and Third Trinity Boat Club
Want to try a (new) sport, make lots of friends and be part of one of the most
famous Cambridge traditions? Then try rowing at First and Third Trinity Boat Club.
We warmly welcome all experience levels, teaching many people from scratch every
year (Imogen Grant competed in the Olympics after learning to row with us in
2014!).
There’s something in the boat club for everyone; whether you are looking for some
serious sport or want to enjoy a recreational row once a week along the beautiful
River Cam and watch the sun rise (or set). Varying commitment levels allow a wide
range of people to be involved with the club.
Each term we compete in many races both on and off the Cam and one of the
highlights of the year is racing bumps. It’s a style of racing exclusive to Oxbridge
where you aim to catch the boat ahead of you before the boat behind manages the
same. The atmosphere is electric and there is no better feeling than managing to
catch another crew against the odds. Hundreds of students take part in rowing and
spectating the event. The week of racing finishes with a black-tie dinner known as a
Boat Club Dinner, where we celebrate our accomplishments over the week.
We have a very active social side with regular planned events, which will give you
plenty of opportunity to socialise with others. From swaps with other colleges to
pub trips, BBQs, formals and games nights, there is something for everyone.
Email us to sign up for a session, speak to us at Chaplains’ Squash or our Freshers’
week event. We look forward to seeing you on the river.

Football
Trinity’s largest sports club is the Football team.
There are 3 teams across different divisions so there is an opportunity for players of
all abilities. Training sessions (not required for the more casual players) run twice a
week on Tuesdays and Thursdays and all teams play league/cup matches most
weekends. One of the sessions is run by Darren our groundsman/FA qualified coach
and is a great opportunity to work on technical ability.
Last year our first team narrowly missed out on promotion and our third team
collected the domestic double topping the league and winning the cup. This year we
are looking to find new talent amongst the freshers and mount a campaign that will
see our first and second teams promoted.
We will be running our first session of the year on Tuesday 3rd of October which is
a chance to meet the team and play some football. We will then be selecting our
starting lineups for the pre season games that weekend.
Find us at Chaplains Squash and in the meantime send any questions to the captain
using the contacts below.

Hockey (Mixed)
Joining the Trinity Hockey Team is a truly great way to improve your hockey skills
and fitness while not having to invest a lot of time, which is probably the most
precious resource here in Cambridge. While playing at college can help you get into
one of the university teams, we encourage players of all levels to join whether you
picked up the stick for the first time or have played for ten years. Come along to our
training and see how much fun Hockey is!
In Michaelmas Term, there will be league matches every Sunday where we play
against other college teams. College Hockey is all about having a good time on the
pitch and everybody will get the opportunity to find their place in the squad. Going
together as a team and developing good chemistry, we will enter the Lent Term
’Cuppers’ competition later in the year which is a champions-league-style
tournament. Matches can get a bit more intense in this term but we have a good
track record, coming third last year.
There are few feelings like walking off the pitch just having defeated one of the big
hockey colleges (St John’s, Jesus, Kings). Join us and see for yourself what this is
like!
There will be a training session before our first match where everyone still
undecided can drop in and try - all are welcome! If you do not have a hockey stick
yet, don’t worry, just drop me a message and we can organise one for you. If you
have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. We are really looking
forward to meeting you at Chaplain’s Squash!

Lawn Tennis
Whether you’re a complete beginner or a university team hopeful, playing with
Trinity Tennis is a great way to spend your time at the college.
We run dedicated coached sessions for team members during the week, which are
perfect for honing your skills, as well as a more mixed ability social practice session
at the weekend. Of course, as members of Trinity, you can also book online and use
one of the courts anytime for free (three astro-turf and two hard) for your own
knockabout or match. But one thing is common to all – everyone is really friendly,
and we pride ourselves on maintaining a nice atmosphere.
Competitively, we field three mixed teams. The 1sts are entering our fifth
consecutive season in division 1 and the 2nds are rising up the divisions fast, so we
really are at the highest level of college tennis. Leagues run both in the Michaelmas
and Lent terms, with matches usually taking place on a weekend.
On top of these, we also have some special tennis events during the year. We
challenge our O*ford sister college, Christ Church, during the Field Club’s annual
varsity match (which will take place in O*ford next year), but we also have an
annual match against a group of Trinity Alumni under the guise of the Bar Lawn
Tennis Society Team.
We look forward to meeting you, and please do come along at the fresher’s sports
day for some tennis!

represents Trinity College at Lacrosse. This sports club plays matches every week
against other colleges and arranges relaxed training sessions around these matches.

are interested in playing Lacrosse at Cambridge, please make sure to sign up and
join a practice or match! We look forward to meeting you!

Netball (Mixed)
In the heart of courts, both near and far,
Trinity’s netball shines, a radiant star.
Elegant leaps, swift passes on display,
Their prowess and spirit light the way.
The pivot, the pass, the goal’s sweet song,
In unity they move, powerful and strong.
With dresses adorned, blue, gold, or white,
They take on the challenge, with all their might.
From dawn’s early shimmer to dusk’s gentle hue,
Their commitment is firm, their resolve ever true.
The intercept, the shot, the cheering sound,
For every teammate, their love knows no bound.
Though sweat may drip and muscles may tire,
Their fiery passion never does expire.
They stand as one, a formidable team,
Chasing every netball player’s dream.
The echo of whistles, the umpire’s call,
The thud of the ball, against the wall.
These are the sounds, the rhythm, the beat,
Of Trinity’s heart, ever so fleet.
Through victories, losses, highs, and lows,
The spirit of Trinity only grows.
46
For it’s not just a game, but a dance of souls,
A symphony of goals, roles, and endless goals.
Celebrate then, the grace of each pass,
The strength in defense, the clear-cut class.
Trinity Netball, a beacon so bright,
Guiding all with its unwavering light.
For the love of the game, for camaraderie,
For moments of joy, for the legacy.
Cheers to Trinity, and its netball glow,
A tale of dedication, we’re privileged to know.

Netball (Womens’s)
Do you ever reminisce about the good old days of playing netball in secondary PE?
Do you wish to relive the days of wearing netball skirts in November? Do you miss
the thrill of seeing how much contact you can get away with? If the answer to all
these questions is yes (which it really should be) then join the Women’s Netball
team!
Like all college sports, we are always looking for new members and Netball at
Trinity is a really inclusive team, open to anyone regardless of previous experience
or skill.
The whole idea is to come and have fun, meet new people and make memories. It’s
also a great way to get away from your studies and get outside.
We aim to play a match once a week and other than this there are really fun training
sessions too! It’s a really low commitment team but the music we play for
warm-ups is always high-quality. As well as against other Cambridge colleges,
we’ll be playing our sister college from Oxford in Lent Term!
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions and we look forward to
seeing you on the court!

beginners, to come along and try it out. We aim to have weekly sessions, and hope

the JCR for a game!

Squash Club
Squash is one of the world’s all-time most popular sports. It’s very fun, is not a
huge commitment (one match a week if you’re on the team), and is a great way to
meet people.
We run an intra-college competition during the year and have a group chat so you
can find people to play with whenever you feel like it.
Any standard is welcome, whether you’ve ever played before or are a veteran of the
sport. If you want to come along, please sign up at chaplain’s squash or contact the
captain.
All in all, squash is a very welcoming and low-commitment sport – even if you have
never played it but just fancy running around, letting some steam off, or making a
few new mates, come and give it a try!

Swimming Club
Swimming is a brilliant sport to do during term time. It’s a great stress reliever and
fun to mess around in the pool with friends after a long week. This year we are also
hoping to do Water Polo depending on interest. Swimming works out the full body
and is diverse enough to tailor to everyone.
For casual swimmers it’s a great way to keep fit and have fun. For the advanced
swimmers/athletes it’s an excellent way to improve cardio, strength and lung
capacity which can help your other sports as well, not just swimming. Whatever
your ability and whatever sport you do, Trinity Swimming is the place to go!
Sessions will take place weekly at Parkside Pools which is a 15 min walk from
college or around 5 min cycle.
At the end of the year, we have Swimming Cuppers where you can put your training
and speed to the test, as well as that it’s a good laugh and really fun to race your
friends!

Ultimate Frisbee
The question is... what is Ultimate Frisbee? Ultimate is a fast-paced, non-contact
sport played with a flying disc. The team in control of the disc advances up the
pitch by throwing the disc to their teammates while the defensive side tries to make
an interception. Goals are scored when the attacking team scores in the opposition
end zone.
Frisbee is a super fun sport and a wonderful way to get fit. Don’t worry if you’ve
never played before - almost no one has when they arrive in Cambridge and many
players play for the university after just one or two years. The best way to learn is to
join us at one of our practices which we’ll run once a week on Trinity’s backs. On
weekends, we play matches against other college teams in the college league and we
also participate in a couple of inter-college tournaments every year.
We welcome everyone, regardless of ability, at all of our training sessions and
matches. If you show up, you’ll always be guaranteed pitch time.
