COMMUNITY NEWS 

Retired and want a new hobby? 

Carrick u3a is an organisation for people 

living originally in the Carrick area. It’s 

membership has spread to cover the 

Truro and surrounding areas. Who have 

a little free time on their hands, whether 

they are part time workers, semi retired 

or retired, there is no age limit. 

We provide over 60 different groups, 

ranging from walks and talks to art and 

craft, science, history, music and dancing 

(Cornish, Scottish, Rock and Roll, ballroom 

and sequence, line dancing). 

We have a very active choir, along with quiz, 

philosophy, human psychology and creative 

writing groups. Sports include badminton, 

short tennis, pétanque, skittles and carpet 

bowls. We also offer bridge, board games 

and mahjong. Something for everyone, in 

fact. Groups take place in local village halls 

and in members’ homes in and around the 

Truro area. There is a monthly meeting in 

Truro library with a variety of speakers on 

topics of local and national interest. 

The u3a is a registered charity and our 

membership fee is just £26 a year, which 

allows members to attend as many groups as 

they wish. There is also a monthly newsletter 

with details of what’s going on and a monthly 

magazine, The Carrick Argus, which features 

articles of general interest as well as 

showcasing the work of the photography 

and creative writing groups.

The Mayor’s 

Diary 

words by Carol Swain 

Here are some of the highlights of my 

summer. 

On 15 September, I had the great privilege 

of meeting His Royal Highness the Duke 

of Edinburgh when he visited the Hall for 

Cornwall. What a kind man he is – he was 

extremely interested in knowing about 

Truro’s current issues and hearing how we 

are working together to tackle them. 

Staying on the theme of Remembrance, 

the Chairman of the National Service 

Veterans Alliance has been travelling round 

the UK by rail to raise money for plaques to 

commemorate all of the young men who 

took part in National Service between 1945 

and 1963. He travelled to Truro on 18 

September to personally deliver a plaque 

for which we plan to hold a dedication 

ceremony in Victoria Gardens in the spring. 

At Cornwall Pride on 26 August, it was 

wonderful to see so many people having a 

happy time, and to celebrate the way that this 

country’s attitude to diversity in all its forms 

has evolved in my lifetime. Talking to the 

people manning the various stalls on Lemon 

Quay, there is clearly still a lot more to do. 

I firmly believe that every human being is 

unique, and that all are of equal value. 

Earlier in the summer, on 6 August I and 

the Mayoress took part in the annual Royal 

British Legion wreath laying ceremony in 

Victoria Gardens, where we remembered 

the fourteen Truronians who were killed in 

1942 in the City’s sole WWII bombing raid. 

Rest in Peace. 

On 3 September I and the Mayoress spent 

a hot afternoon in Boscawen Park watching 

the Eddie Jones Boules Tournament which 

is run by the Truro-Morlaix Twinning Society. 

I was delighted to present the three trophies 

to the worthy winners. The Deputy Mayor 

played magnificently as usual but was not a 

winner this time. Better luck next year, Sam. 

Our guests from Morlaix have been visiting us 

again from 14 to 18 September. Apart from 

attending some of the programmed activities, 

I held a Farewell Reception for them before 

they set off on their homeward journey. 

I would like to wish everyone a Merry 

Christmas and a healthy and prosperous 

New Year

Truro BID 

We have been busy working with 

various partners on Christmas 

activities and this year celebrations 

launch Friday 24th November with 

our Festive Friday event, which 

includes Truro’s Christmas Lights 

Switch-on at 7pm. 

From 3pm Pirate FM’s Johnny Cowling and 

Lucy Start will be in Truro, and at 4.45pm there 

will be entertainment organised by the Hall 

for Cornwall on the stage at Boscawen St. 

This year, once the lights are switched-on, 

celebrations continue with live music until 

around 9pm. 

On Festive Friday, the Big Festive Shop Small 

Market, hosted by Cornwall Shop Small, will be 

back on Lemon Quay next to Truro Farmers 

Market and trading until 9pm. To continue the 

festivities, we are organising an extra event, 

The Father Christmas Parade on Wednesday 

29th November at 6.30pm. As well as Father 

Christmas, local dance groups, musicians and 

circus performers will be parading around the 

city centre Peter Pan style! Thank you to Coodes

The Father Christmas Parade, and to FEAST 

for supporting The Father Christmas Parade. 

From 29th November there will be four 

Wednesday Late Night Shopping evenings 

and we have been working with Truro 

Farmers Market to provide traffic-free 

shopping streets. Consequently, on 

Wednesday Late Night Shopping, Boscawen 

St will host a selection of Truro Farmers Market 

produce stalls during the day, which will change 

to seasonal goods from 4pm. We will be 

organising street food, along with festive 

entertainment dotted around to help 

everyone get into the Christmas Spirit. 

Once again, we are delighted to be working 

with Coppice Theatre to bring back ‘Finding 

Father Christmas’. The storytelling and 

grotto experience will run for seven dates 

from Wednesday 6th December and this year 

families can meet Father Christmas at a new 

location, the Royal Cornwall Museum. 

With so much going on, we hope that residents 

and visitors will come in to shop, eat, drink, and 

enjoy Christmas in Truro. For more details on

Aspergillus Niger 

This is a common form of mould found 

within much of the UK and known to 

thrive in cold, damp interior conditions. 

A 2021 English Housing Survey revealed that 

904,000 homes within England were affected by 

damp-related issues, while in 2019 an estimated 

653,000 homes were subject to Category 1 (the 

highest risk level) of excessive cold; both of which, 

pose a serious risk to an occupant’s health and safety. 

Young children and the elderly are at the greatest

As people in Truro face another winter 

of high energy bills, Citizens Advice 

Cornwall shares how small changes can 

make a big difference when it comes to 

saving energy and lowering costs. 

You can make simple changes to save 

money and don’t need to wait until the colder 

months to do so. These include: 

• Washing clothes at 30°C could save around £15 

per year (reducing the number of wash cycles by 

one per week could save a further £15) 

• Reducing shower time to four minutes could 

save £75 a year 

• Swapping one bath a week for a four-minute 

shower could save an average of £17 a year. 

Lifestyle changes won’t be possible for everyone 

and may not be enough to cover the hole in 

household budgets, so check you’re getting all 

the support you’re entitled to. This could include:

News from 

Truro City Council 

The last few weeks have been busy for the 

Council and our great little city. 

Kids Club 

Our Great Little Kids Club came back 

for a second year during August with a 

fantastic range of activities taking place 

in Victoria Gardens Bandstand every 

weekday afternoon. 

Organised by the City Council in 

partnership with Visit Truro, Royal Cornwall 

Museum, Truro Cathedral, and Hall for 

Cornwall, the programme saw the return 

of the Countryside Rangers team, stories 

& craft sessions with Truro Library, activities 

with the Royal Cornwall Museum, Jules the 

Ventriloquist &, new for 2023, the Hall for 

Cornwall team hosting dance workshops. 

New lease of life for bandstand 

Talking of Victoria Gardens, work has begun 

on the long awaited project to refurbish the 

much loved bandstand. 

After identifying funding from the Council’s 

Parks Capital Maintenance budget, work 

on the bandstand began in the middle of 

September. 

The programme includes replacing the roof 

and guttering, recasting the metal areas, 

replacing the wood facias and other areas, 

carrying out extensive sand blasting and 

repairs to the stonework. Once this has 

been completed, the whole structure will be 

given a new coat of paint. 

Work is also set to begin on the top pond 

in the Gardens during the next few weeks. 

Originally planned to take place during the 

summer, this project was postponed until 

the Autumn to minimise the impact on 

wildlife. 


Celebrating Cornwall Pride 

We were very proud to support Cornwall 

Pride in Truro during August. 

It was fantastic to see so many people 

having a great time in the city centre so a 

big thank you to everyone who took part in 

the march and packed the streets to cheer 

on the parade. 

Summer reading challenge 

success 

It’s been a wonderful summer of reading at 

Truro Library. 

Starting in July, over 750 children came 

into the library to take part in the Summer 

Reading Challenge. 

Helped by a team of fantastic teenage 

volunteers, children from local primary 

schools had to read six books of their 

choice to complete the Challenge, 

receiving a medal and certificate, as 

well as a voucher giving them a free swim 

session. 

Our library staff loved hearing the children 

review the books they had read, a great 

way for them to be able to recommend 

titles to other borrowers. And pre-schoolers 

weren’t left out! The Library also ran the 

Mini Challenge with a free activity pack 

and stickers for 

anyone not yet 

going to school. 

Particular thanks to our Town Crier Lionel 

Knight who represented the City Council at 

the event.

Bio Blitz with our Countryside 

Rangers 

It was great to see so many people taking 

part in the Bio Blitz volunteer events 

organised by the Friends of Coosebean 

with support from our Countryside Rangers. 

And finally,…. 

Other activities included the Big Summer 

Market, with Truro Farmers Market and 

Cornwall Shop Small bringing together fine 

food producers, artisan drinks purveyors, and 

inspirational craft makers at Lemon Quay. 

Designed to provide people with hands 

on learning about the wildlife in Truro’s 

wild spaces, including Daubuz Moor 

and Coosebean’s Northern Meadows, 

volunteers had the opportunity to observe 

butterflies, insects and other wildlife. 

The Mayor and Mayoress joined Truro’s Anti 

Social Behaviour Officer, Truro, Perranporth 

and Tregony police, the Drug and Alcohol 

Action Team and other Safer Cornwall at 

Lemon Quay for an Anti Social Behaviour 

Week event.

15 took part in the free fun-based football 

games and activities held at Rosedale

Combatting a 

STRESSSS attack! 

This time of year can be particularly 

stressful. It is one of the most common 

energies that effect people. With rising 

costs, less income, Christmas approaching, 

having family responsibilities etc we can 

get so overwhelmed that our minds can 

spiral out of control, leading to panic 

attacks, hopelessness, depression and 

bodily pain to name but a few. 

To understand how we store stress energy, 

we first have to recognise that outside of 

our physical body we have an energetic 

body. There are a number of energy centres 

in the energy body that get blocked due to 

unwanted energies, eg stress, anxiety, anger, 

frustration, etc and its these blockages that 

stops the free flow of energy reaching our 

physical body this can manifest as pain. 

We always work with traditional medicine and 

as this is a complementary therapy, if you are 

not feeling quite right do make sure you go to 

your doctor first to get a medical opinion and 

diagnosis of your symptoms. That way we 

know what we are dealing with on the physical 

level. I have many protocols to deal with 

most physical, emotional and psychological 

conditions and with a short chat, we can look 

at a treatment plan to suit.

Winter’s tale of 

the snail 

Anna Cormie BSc(Hons) MSc 

In these darker and colder months, 

much of our wildlife is hiding from these 

harsher conditions. Two such species are 

slugs and snails. 

You may wonder how these small animals 

survive the freezing weather as frost and dry 

air can be lethal for them. Slugs and snails 

will hibernate their way through the worst of 

the winter weather, a tactic they also use in 

summer heatwaves. Snails can be found under 

flowerpots or in cracks in walls, either stuck 

together in a clump or by themselves. Having 

retreated into their shell, they then seal 

themselves in with a thick layer of slime thus 

keeping out the cold dry air. Slugs, however, 

will burrow into the ground and use the soil to 

protect them from the harsh winters. 

Not all of our species hide away in winter 

however, for some it is when they are most 

visible to us. The starling (Sturnus vulgaris) 

leaves the harsh weather in Eastern Europe, 

Russia and Scandinavia to come to Britain for 

the winter months. Starlings are a declining 

species and are on the IUCN Red List, making 

them a species of concern. These birds are best 

known for their incredible group flights called 

murmurations. Best seen on still and clear 

December evenings, large groups of starlings 

will fly in formation together at dusk in an 

incredible aerial display before going home to 

roost. 

So whether you are out enjoying cold clear 

evenings or staying home to hibernate, we

A historian and a very active one at that - he 

recently raised money for and installed a 

memorial to the miners who died at East 

Wheal Rose mine when it was suddenly

spent by Charles Dickens in Cornwall, and

Adrian Wilton - Churchill’s Secret Army - the 

secretly mobilised forces which would have 

become the resistance in the event of a German 

invasion in WW2. He will be speaking about the 

arrangements made during the second world 

war to set up a resistance to occupation (if it 

occurred) with units of a ‘secret army’. Truro 

was one of the towns which had such a unit.
