INTRODUCTION
Embark On An Exploration Of Taste And Quality With James Pettit & Co
Our prestigious award-winning portfolio is expanding,
and our global partnerships continue to flourish. From the
cherished family-run vineyards to the avant-garde and the
delightfully eccentric, we leave no stone unturned in our
quest to procure extraordinary wines for the discerning UK
on-trade market.
But who are we?
Once the venerable wine and spirits division of the Aylesbury
Brewery Company, James Pettit stands as a stalwart Wine
Merchants establishment, its roots stretching back to 1737.
Our unwavering commitment to service, quality, and, above
all, empowering the wine category, sets us apart.
Gone are the days of patrons effortlessly streaming through
your venue's doors. Today, their time and wallets are pulled
in countless directions, making the art of offering the perfect
selection a complex endeavour. In an era of price pressures,
escalating living costs, evolving duty regulations, and a shift
towards mindful consumption, striking that perfect balance
between customer satisfaction and business prosperity can
seem daunting.
Having assumed the helm of James Pettit & Co in 2010
under the Dayla banner, I've witnessed the wine industry's
ceaseless evolution. We've adapted in tandem, embracing
ecological responsibility with a focus on organic, biodynamic,
and natural wines. Our vegan wine selection burgeons as we
respond to the choices of a conscientious clientele.
But, our most significant investment has been in our people.
With three dedicated and seasoned "Wine Development
Managers" complementing our account managers, we
possess an in-depth understanding of the ever-evolving
marketplace we all navigate. As you explore our diverse
range, you'll discern that it caters to every palate.
In essence, we are here to consult, to understand your
unique business, and to craft something bespoke and
purposeful. In a world awash with uniformity,
we empower you to stand out distinctly.
Here's to a prosperous partnership!
- Tim Nortje, Head of James Pettit
Modern customers don't just converse; they capture
moments and opinions, sharing them across their chosen
digital platforms as they seek memorable experiences.
Amidst this dynamic landscape, rest assured, we are your
unwavering support.
ARGENTINA
Patagonia
Argentina’s appearance and rise on the international
wine map is a very recent story with little or no exports
on the run up to the 1990’s and now sitting 6th in the
world’s wine production. After many years of economic
chaos and stagnation we have seen massive investment
coming into the region, rejuvenating their old cellars,
building modern wineries.
Located in the South American continent in a territory
that is four times larger than France, Argentina is one of
the world’s nature reserves. Privileged with outstanding
natural richness and extraordinarily diverse landscapes,
Argentina boasts high mountains and plains, lush
vegetation and extreme deserts, forests and steppes,
glaciers and waterfalls.
The wealth of natural ecosystems includes vast, highly
productive grape growing regions stretching at the
foot of the Andean strip to the West of the country,
from latitude 22˚ south to latitude 42˚ south. It is in
this context with five centuries of development, that
Argentina has crafted such an extraordinary wine
industry. The altitude, the wide range of temperatures
and local know-how. The new technologies and a
deeply rooted popular wine culture lends their wines
their unique identity, quality and ultimately
their popularity and yes, in the on-trade we
probably think of this as the “World’s Malbec
We at James Pettit have seen our Argentinian
category continue to grow, not just in volume
but variety too. We can now see that when
we structure a new wine list Argentinian
Malbec is a must by the glass, and even listing
a few by the bottle too. Added to this, we are
seeing consumers looking to other varieties
as they explore the region.
Don’t forget
World Malbec Day
17th April
Our Favourite Facts About Malbec
Argentina “Saved” Malbec
Today, Argentina leads production of the grape with over 75% of all the acres of Malbec in the world.
In a way, Argentina reinvigorated Malbec as one of the top 18 noble grapes. Now it grows
in several countries and continues to grow in popularity.
Malbec’s Blind Tasting Tell
Look for a magenta-tinged rim. Malbec wine is a deep purple-red that is nearly opaque,
similar to Syrah and Mourvedre. However, Malbec wines will often have a bright magenta rim.
A tell! Why not host a blind tasting party of your own.
Umami Lover
Unlike Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec doesn’t have a super long finish. Because of this, Malbec
is great with leaner red meats (ostrich anyone?). The wine does extremely well with funky flavours
like blue cheese and rustic flavours like mushrooms and cumin spice.

AUSTRALIA
The UK accounted for some 25% of Australia's
exports by value and when you consider that
through lockdown those exports remained
pretty steady, some $4.4 billion. This just seems
to show how the big brands of the Off-Trade
seem to dominate and drive sales, it also shows
the following the UK have for Aussie wines.
South Australia
New South Wales
Victoria
Australia, though, is more than just the big
brands. This remarkable country is home to an
amazing array of diverse climates, and these are
reflected in their unique and regionally distinct
wines. If the Off-Trade is very much dominated
by big brands, the On-Trade then is all about
developing this regional diversity.
New South Wales was the site of Australia’s first
vineyard and winery, established in the early
1800s. South Australia is home to some of the
worlds’ oldest vines, dating back to the 1850s.
More than 60 designated wine regions produce
in excess of 100 different grape varieties and is
one of the largest wine producing countries in
the world. Back in the 1990’s there were fewer
than 1000 wineries with all the majority of the
CHILE
limari valley
casablanca
maipo
maule valley
There are not many other counties who seem to be continually
developing new wine regions as rapidly as Chile. It is a country
that is beset geographic barriers – the Atacama Desert to the
north, the Andes Mountains to the east, the Patagonian ice
fields to the South and the Pacific Ocean to the west – all of
which make Chile a veritable agricultural island.
Chile made its reputation as a producer of relatively low
cost Cabernet and Merlot grown with enviable ease in the
Central Valley, now the viticultural limits are being tested in
all directions. Their wines becoming more refined and more
regionally distinct. No longer do we find Chilean wines just
along the narrow corridor bounded by the Pacific cool winds
or the Soaring Andes. If Argentina is about altitude then
perhaps with Chile it is about latitude.
Chile is exceptionally well suited to vine growing. Its barriers
protecting it from the Phylloxera louse which devastated
Europe in the 19th century.
The UK is still the 2nd largest export market for Chilean wine
but volume and as we have seen in the general market-place,
is in general decline. It is also interesting to note that although
we are drinking less we are spending a more on our wines.
ENGLAND
Who would have thought that English wines would
have gained such popularity with the general public.
The ever changing climate and the developing of the
English sparkling market has seen brands develop
with a strong UK following. Think, Nyetimber or
Bolney or even Rathfinny.
“Sales have increased by nearly 70% over the past
two years and the number of vines planted each
year has averaged more than 1.6m recently. There
seems no deceleration in the pace of innovation,
product development and consumer engagement.”
Simon Thorpe MW CEO, WineGB
We at James Pettit have seen this trend continue
with strong sales through the Pandemic years and
on through 2022/ 23. The demand in the On-Trade
continues steadily. The reality is; the steady growth
we see is off a small base as the vineyards struggle
to meet the demand and all are having to work with
allocation levels.
Sussex
Kent
We continue to see innovation with the likes of Folc,
beautifully presented bottle selling a feeling or style
which harks towards Provence but is quintessentially
English at heart.
“Style which harks
When we see volume decline in the On-Trade
industry, thinking how we can premiumise to
grow margin should be sitting in the back of
our minds and English wines all sit at a premium
especially with the high cost of production.
We are not only seeing lots of attention and
recognition rising for the sparkling wines but
also for the still wines of Bacchus, Pinot Gris &
Pinot Blanc. The classic Champagne varieties
continue delivering great quality but suffer
from the ability to deliver the volume. This
then seems to be the standard when trying to
make wine in England.
FRANCE
“France was the leading country of origin for wine imported
(by value) into the United Kingdom in 2022.”
France is the leading country of origin for wine imported (by value) into the United Kingdom in 2022.
This was not the case in 2017/18. France has needed to innovate, and there have been, and are,
serious contenders producing beautiful wines from around the world.
For some wineries the wine is all about the region, its heritage and therefore its style. Building on the
shoulders of their predecessors. For others, it has been about looking out into the wider world
and bringing their enthusiasm and passion to bear.
Champagne, Burgundy, Loire, Bordeaux and the Rhone continue to feature strongly in the
On-Trade but demand and harvest with poor yields have invariably seen the prices rise
and availability in some cases just fall away.
The Languedoc and Roussilon as well as the regions of Provence and Luberon have been the
work horse of the On-Trade delivering innovation and styles that help to drive sales and
deliver margin back into the On-Trade.
PROVENCE
France
This fascinating French region sits along the Mediterranean coast, bordered by the Rhone River to the west, the Côte
d’Azur to the east. Wine has been made here for over 2.5 Centuries, making Provence the oldest wine-producing
region of France.
Provence is blessed with a fantastic climate, especially for grapes! The region gets lots of sunshine and not too
much rain with warm days and cool evenings. The Mediterranean moderates the temperatures, and the famous
“Mistral” wind keeps the vineyards dry, free of pests. We can see the profound impact that Provence roses have had
in the world of wine, with styles imitating this from around the world.
BORDEAUX
France
Bordeaux is divided along its rivers, the left bank on the Atlantic Ocean side of the rivers Gironde and Garonnne, the
right bank to the right and north of the Dordogne river, which also feeds into the Gironde. The area in between the
rivers is known as Entre Deux Mers or between two seas in French. We know the region’s best wine estates, even
if they only comprise a small proportion of the area’s 120,000ha. The vines that stretch right across the Gironde
department in Aquitaine likely trace their ancestral roots back around 2,000 years to when the Romans ruled the area.
NEW ZEALAND
New Zealand’s wine regions extend from
subtropical Northland down to Central Otago,
the world’s most southerly vineyards. The
country’s vineyards benefit from a maritime
climate with long sunshine hours and nights
cooled by sea breezes.
Most of the wine regions are found on the
eastern coastlines of the North and South
Islands, in the rain shadow of the mountains,
each with its own unique soils and climatic
conditions. Marlborough put New Zealand on
the international wine stage with its Sauvignon
Blanc and is the country’s largest wine region,
but New Zealand has so much to offer and not
just Sauvignon Blanc.
We focus on four key regions but as ever have
SPAIN
Spain enjoys a fascinating and diverse
landscape, with both Atlantic and
Mediterranean coasts, dry plateaus, and
the Pyrenees mountains. Spanish wines
feature a real mix, between bold fruit
and dusty minerality that makes them
fall between old and new world styles.
The country boasts the highest vineyard
acreage in the world, but yields are
relatively low given the wide vine spacing
and limited water use. Spain is the origin
country of several top varieties like
WINES OF MONTERREI
Staying in the Galician region of northern Spain we find the D.O. Monterrei. Located in
the south-eastern corner of Galicia, bordering Portugal, with winemaking being introduced
to the area by the ancient Romans. In 1994, Monterrei regained the DO status that
had been stripped from it because local producers failed to modernize their wineries
sufficiently but have since, not only improved, they have won international acclaim,
including commendations from the wine critic Robert Parker in 2008.
INTRODUCING TWO STUNNING WINES
WORTHY OF ANY CELLAR...
PEPE PORTER MENCIA
An amazing Mencía that delivers all its character with every
glass, a premium quality wine comes from the careful selection
of the best bunches of the Mencia red grape. It is a delicious and
versatile and account for a tiny part in the world’s total grape
production. Appealingly bright with a gorgeous cherry red colour,
intense, with fruit notes of raspberry, redcurrant, black plum and
elegant floral aromas. A delicious red, balanced with defined fruit
and the depth and length.
PEPA PORTER GODELLO
If you're looking for a rare Iberian grape variety then look no further than
Godello. The grape was nearly extinct in the mid-20th century but with a
focussed replanting programme it was resurrected from obscurity in the
70’s. Characterized by its small, closely packed berries and its mineral
acidity it truly was a remarkable save and Pepa Porter’s beautiful white is a
gorgeous example. Godello Pepa Porter is the result of a careful work in
the field and craft in the winery. 4 months on fine lees, the best Godello
grapes. Think citrus and stone fruits intermingle with floral notes.
UNITED STATES
The United States might have a short history in winemaking when compared to many other wine nations, but you’d
not realise this when you note that the U.S. is 4th worldwide for wine production. It is probably best known for
Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and yes the sweet rose from Zinfandel. The States have a varied landscape from
coast to coast but the majority is made in California, think fruit-forward wines that focus on French varieties, like
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. Beyond California, Washington State, Oregon, and New
York represent the largest up-and-comers of US wine.
WHY SHOULD YOU BE SELLING MINI CANS OF WINE?
The canned wine
market is growing
at around 13% per
year.
The global market for canned wines is growing at 13% per year. By 2028 it's forecast to be worth £428m! Whilst the US
is the big player in this market, UK sales have quadrupled since 2018. The growth in festivals, followed by the pandemic's
successive lockdowns and outdoor socialising broke down barriers to canned wines, particularly for young drinkers. The
convenience, reliable quality and funky packaging has attracted new drinkers into the wine category – and you can see
it in the increased range on supermarket shelves!
Good For Your Business
• Quick to chill and take up less room in the fridge. And they look great too!
• Unbreakable. Perfect for outside spaces with restrictions on glass.
• Reduce wastage. No more pouring away bottles left open too long for wines by the glass.
• Keep your wine in perfect condition. No light taint or oxidation. The perfect serve size.
Good For The Planet
• Aluminium cans have a carbon footprint that's 2.5x less than the equivalent glass bottle.
• They take less energy (and cost less) to produce, transport and recycle.
• They can be recycled indefinitely. 82% of cans in the UK are recycled!
• They are smaller and more efficient to pack, without wasted space or the need for extra
packaging to avoid breakages. Lighter packaging burns less fossil fuel during transport.
VEGAN WINES
Demand for vegan
wines has shot up,
with a 51% rise in sales
in the last two years.
It is not commonly known that the use of fining agents in the
wine-making process can determine if a wine is suitable for
vegans or not.
Fining is a process where a substance is added to the wine
which helps to stabilize and clarify the liquid. The idea is
that it is all then removed, along with particulates that would
otherwise leave the wine hazy. Some of the fining agents used
are also there to target bitter phenolics that are undesirable
in their final wine.
Our range of Vegan & Vegetarian wines continue to grow and
the below list showcases what we currently offer. However,
please do speak with us as this list is ever-changing as more
as more wine makers make the move.
Examples of commonly used
fining agents:
• Carbon
• Gelatine
• Isinglass (fish protein)
• Casein (from milk)
• Egg Albumin
• Pea Protein
Look out for the following
SUSTAINABILITY
VINEYARD AND WINERY SUSTAINABILITY
It is no secret that the world of winemaking can have
a detrimental effect on the environment. There are
countless opportunities to lower your wine’s carbon
footprint, improve efficiency, and increase your profits
through sustainable practices and make environmentally
conscious decisions.
Every piece of land is different from the next, so what
works on some vineyards may not be appropriate in
others. This is alright! Generally, one third of the wine
industry’s carbon footprint is made during the growth
and development of the wine itself. The other two
thirds of its footprint develop during the packaging,
distribution, and storage of the wine.
A sustainable winery can be defined as a winery that
acts through consideration of the economic, social, and
environmental effects their product has on the world.
SUSTAINABILITY
Includes biodynamic farming, organic farming, and
many other programmes seen around the world takes
the below points and acts upon them.
• Water Efficiency
• Soil Health & Fertilization
• Pest Management
• Energy Efficiency
• Waste and Wastewater Management
• Transportation
• Packaging and Material Sourcing
164
ORGANIC, BIODYNAMIC & NATURAL
Organic wine is produced from grapes that have
been grown without the use of chemicals, artificial or
synthetic, such as pesticides and herbicides. Instead,
to prevent pests, bugs and weeds interfering with the
grapevines, organic farmers will work in harmony with
nature, not against it.
Biodynamic: Like organic wine, biodynamic wine
starts with grapes farmed without synthetic pesticides
or fertilizers and is turned into wine using few if any
additives. These practices are based on the philosophy
of Rudolf Steiner. The idea is that humans don’t run
the show; instead, they see themselves as guides,
encouraging maximum harmony among all life forms
on the farm. As a result, biodynamic wines tend to be
unique—full of the individual character of the places
that produced them.
Natural wine is ancient, and on trend. Natural wine is
more of a concept than a well-defined category with
agreed-upon characteristics. In its purest form, it is
wine made from unadulterated fermented grape juice
and nothing else. You may see other terms bandied
about; “low-intervention” wine, “naked” wine, or even
“raw” wine. Natural wine is made from grapes not
sprayed with pesticides or herbicides. The grapes tend
to be hand harvested and the resulting must is then
fermented with natural yeasts.
throughout the portfolio....
WINE IS SUSTAINABLE
WINE IS CERTIFIED ORGANIC

CLASSIC GRAPE VARIETIES
CABERNET SAUVIGNON:
A “noble” grape famous with its spiritual home in
Bordeaux but widely grown around the world and helps
make wines of classic breed, intensity and complexity
that often need to bottle-age for at least 5-10 years
in order to reach peak flavour condition. Aromas and
flavours include: blackcurrant, blackberry, mint.
CARMENERE:
Very limited plantings of this red wine grape are now
found in the Medoc region of Bordeaux, France where it
is used to produce deep red wines occasionally used for
blending purposes in the same manner as Petit Verdot
but was re-discovered in Chile where is was thoughts to
be Merlot and produce stunning straight varietal wines.
CHARDONNAY:
Highly popular, versatile and widely planted
international white variety equally capable of extreme
mediocrity and regal splendour. Chardonnay‘s spiritual
home is Burgundy and very important in Champagne.
There, as in the cooler regions New Zealand and around
the world, the wine made from it is often aged in small
oak barrels to produce strong flavours and aromas, but
of late we see a great rise in the un-oaked styles
becoming more prevalent.
CHENIN BLANC:
A widely grown white-wine grape variety, known as
Steen in South Africa, but its home has to be that of the
Loire Valley. Often made in a variety of styles with or
without some residual sugar. It is the favoured grape
of the Anjou region of France.
GAMAY:
The Gamay grape is a widely grown in Beaujolais and is
an early-ripening clone of Pinot Noir that can do well in
the temperate climates. If picked promptly will produce
a good soft fruity style of red wine.
MALBEC:
Semi-classic grape grown in Bordeaux and Southern
France: Cahors, and in other areas under the name
Cot and in the Alsace has the local name Auxerrois.
Consumers have begun a love affair with this variety
from Argentina – being one of the few varietals that
grew its RSP last year and the year before. With
characteristics of intense summer fruits.
MERLOT:
Classic grape widely grown but with its heart in
Bordeaux. The red wine bears a resemblance to
Cabernet Sauvignon wine, with which it is sometimes
blended, but is usually not so intense, with softer
tannins and notes of chocolate. Matures earlier than
Cabernet Sauvignon. Other countries such as Chile,
Argentina and New Zealand also seem to have the right
climate for this variety and with great success.
MONTEPULCIANO:
Minor grape mostly found growing in central and
southern Italy. Generally made into a blend with
Sangiovese in order to produce a fruity, round,
yet balanced red wine with attractive aroma.
MOURVEDRE:
Robust mediterranean grape variety widely grown in
the southern Rhone region of France and mainly used
to introduce colour and body to the red wine blends.
Select limited plantings in California and Australia,
where the grape is often called Mataro.
MUSCAT:
Traditionally found in Alsace and Southern Rhone
(used for dessert wines) as well as in Australia now
where some exceptionally crafted liqueur wines are
made (Victoria, Rutherglen). Its classic characteristics
are that of musk, grapey notes, orange and can be
floral and aromatic in nature too.
GEWURZTRAMINER:
Widely grown, and one of the mainstay grapes
for which the Alsace is famous, the popular
Gewurztraminer produces white wines with a strong
floral aroma and lychee nut like flavour. Occasionally it
is made into a “botrytized” late harvest dessert style
wine. Does well in the cooler coastal regions of Western
U.S., Australia and New Zealand.
GRENACHE:
A grape variety found widely grown in Spain, (where
it is known under the name Garnacha), the southern
Rhone. It is the main grape used in the red wine blend
known as Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and, along with the
Mourvedre, Cinsaut and some others, makes good wine
blends under the appellation “Cotes du Rhone Villages”
with characteristics of raspberries and white pepper.
NEBBIOLO:
Grape responsible for the long-lived, fine red wines
of the Piedmont region of Italy. The role of honour
includes “Barolo” and “Barbaresco”; all huge, tannic
wines that at their best can take decades to mature
when vinified in the traditional manner.
PAIS:
Chile’s commonplace grape probably imported by the
Spanish conquistadores. Identical to the Criolla Chica
of Argentina and Mission of California and Mexico.
Dry grown in southern regions and increasingly
transformed into interesting wine.
165

CLASSIC GRAPE VARIETIES
PETIT SYRAH:
Widely grown grape variety in California. Produces a
dark red, tannic wine in the warm regions of California,
used mainly as backbone for Central Valley “jug” wines.
In the cooler northern regions can be made into a
robust, balanced red wine of some popularity.
PINOT BLANC:
Mutation of the Pinot Gris vine. Grape is generally used
to make dry, crisp, rather intense white wines in the
Alsace, parts of Burgundy and in Austria. Used in many
of the better method traditional style sparkling wines of
California because of its acid content and clean flavour.
PINOT GRIS: (A.K.A PINOT GRIGIO)
Clone of Pinot Noir, and also called Tokay Pinot Gris
are one of the best grapes varieties found in the Alsace
where the variety is used to make a golden-yellow
wine with aromatic, fruity flavours that improves with
a couple of years in the bottle, but look out for some
wonderful wines from New Zealand and Australia too.
PINOT NOIR:
The premier grape of the Burgundy and Champagne.
It produces a red wine that is lighter in colour than
the Bordeaux reds (such as Cabernet and Merlot) and
stunning sparkling wines. In the attempt to produce
the best wines from cooler regions, it has proved to be
a capriciously acting and difficult grape variety being
thin skinned and needing great care. Cherished aromas
and flavours often detected are cherry, mint, raspberry
and truffles.
RIESLING:
Germany is the home of Riesling but it is widely planted
in the Alsace as well as Australia and some stunning
styles coming from New Zealand and is renowned
for producing some of the finest white wines in the
world when grown on steep slate vineyards like those
found on the banks of the Mosel. Classic new world
characteristics include apples, limes and other citrus
and tropical fruits and old world styles with petrol and
slate minerals.
SANGIOVESE:
Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of
Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red
wines, producing medium-bodied reds with rich black
cherry or plum like flavours and aromas.
SAUVIGNON BLANC:
Classic white-wine variety commonly planted in the
Bordeaux and the Loire and to huge acclaim in
New Zealand. It is also, together with Semillon, has an
important role to play in the production of Sauternes,
the fine botrytis influenced dessert wine of the region.
Sauvignon shows a tendency towards a grassy,
herbaceous flavours (Sancerre), gunflint and cordite
(Pouilly-Fumé) , gooseberries, tropical fruits (NZ).
SEMILLON:
Semi-classic grape widely grown in the Bordeaux and
with some stunning success in Australia. This grape
variety has a distinct fig-like character. In France,
Australia and increasingly in California it is often
blended with Sauvignon Blanc to create better balance.
Wineries in many countries also use the grape to create
dry single-varietal white wines as well as dessert wines
as Semillon is susceptible to infection of the “noble
rot” fungi” it can be used to produce first-class sweet
white wines such as those of the French Sauternes. It is
slow to mature but when it opens up it is sublime.
SYRAH / SHIRAZ:
A grape variety associated with the Rhone Valley,
famous for creating “Hermitage” red wine and Australia
(known as Shiraz). In the state of California, depending
on location, vintage or fermentation technique, it is
used to either produce a spicy, complex wine or a
simple richly fruity style wine.
TEMPRANILLO:
The grape of Rioja. Many of the characteristics of Rioja arise
from the long oak ageing although when vinified without
oak you could find notes of strawberries and soft spices.
VIOGNIER:
A grape varietal grown in the northern Rhone. Has full,
spicy flavours somewhat reminiscent of the Muscat
grape and violets. New plantings in California and
Argentina have created much anticipation among
the wine community. Viognier can vary from almost
Riesling-like character to almost Chardonnay character,
depending on production method.
ZINFANDEL / PRIMITIVO:
The USA has made this grape its own with extensive
plantings throughout California. It is used to produce
robust red wine as well as very popular “blush wines”
called “White Zinfandel”. Zinfandel is noted for its
peppery, fruit-laden, berry-like aromas. ITALY though
has shed its past as an obscure blending grape in
inexpensive wines, and it is now being made into
distinctive, high-quality, varietal wines.
WINE MENU DESIGN
James Pettit are pleased to offer premium quality menu
designs free of charge to customers who buy their wines
from us. We have teamed up with one of the finest
printers in the UK, who will finish off all of our design
work. Whether you are after a simple tent card to
highlight a few wines or a dedicated list, we cater for all.
We all need a wine list to instruct our customers what
our offering is. Whether you’re a bar offering a simple
range or a fine dining restaurant you will need a list that
helps to sell those wines to your patrons.
James Pettit & Company Wine Merchants will help you
construct a well thought out list to enhance your venue.
We’ll help position the wines on your list to encourage
customers to trade up with customer experimentation
and up-selling which is ultimately all about increasing
sales and maximising margin.
We really admire a list that can be read in three minutes
that offers a lot of variety and a mix of things familiar
and exotic. This sort of list shows thoughtfulness,
restraint, respect for customers, and simple good taste.
James Pettit & Company know the marketplace we work
within and would be pleased to share our knowledge to
help you deliver what can be a daunting task
to others.
We will do all of this for you for FREE
So if you are after a new wine menu professionally
structured, designed and printed or are looking for
a mini promotion to drive interest and activity then
please feel free to talk to us…..
A great training aid for your staff and can be adapted to
BUILDING YOUR WINE CATEGORY
We are in an age where consumers are increasingly wine-savvy. It pays to get it right, but what makes
a good-looking wine list?
(by the glass or the bottle). We need to recognise how
many wines we offer by the glass and the price points
that these need to sit at as well as the glass size that
we should be trying to focus on to drive the notion of
quality and value.
If your wine list is confusing to read, with no hint to
the style of the wines, people will go for the cheaper,
safer options every time. Almost using your menu at
a battleship game, heading down the price point and
traversing across to see what sits there.
Ultimately the aim of a menu is to support the bar and
your staff to showcase your offering. To try to enthuse
the customer with options and styles that will intrigue
or at least reassure them of quality and encourage
them to spend. I have seen so many food-led venues
with the wine offering so poor that I have opted for a
beer instead, or perhaps we are driving and the wine
available by the glass is the cheapest, so the poorest
quality to pair with the chefs special dish.
The new era of consumer has seen a sizable shift away
from volume, towards quality, trading up to better. In
part, this is because the cost of wine has been increasing
– year after year – along with the various lock-down
periods, where customers were searching out better
wines to sit and drink at home.
There has also been the growing drive towards healthier
living. This idea does not just sit in the wine category,
but extends across the board to beers and spirits.
I have never seen the costs of wine rise the way it has,
Burgundy perhaps being the only exception. These
increases have been bound up with the rises on dry
goods, higher energy costs that our wineries are having
to cope with, as well as haulage cost increases.
Now, add to this the Governments proposed new duty
scheme that landed at the start of August 2023. This
effectively means that we are all going to be slapped
with another increase on our wines in 2023. It does feel
relentless does it not?
It is lucky then that consumers are willing to pay more
for their wines, but they are now more aware of grape
variety and wine regions and will actively search for a
wine that delivers quality.
Our offering needs to be thinking about the range
we want to offer and the styles that are in vogue
alongside a serving that is appropriate for the needs of
the business. What kind of venue are you, restaurant,
wine and cocktail Bar… etc. and to consider how to
encourage further sales. We also need to recognise
how our customers are choosing to consume their wine
The list should be designed to make choosing wine;
an easier, quicker, less stressful and hopefully more
enjoyable experience for our customers - my job is to
make sure that what’s on the list in terms of content
deliver.
Let one of our Wine Development Managers consult
with you to create something beautiful and functional,
that helps drive and deliver a wine category that adds
value to your customers and ultimately profit to your
business.
