released her latest book, ‘New Dawn’.

After a series of successful children’s

fiction piece aimed at young adults,

MIDLANDS AIR AMBULANCE CHARITY URGES

PUBLIC TO LEARN LIFESAVING SKILLS ON

RESTART A HEART DAY

The clinical team at Midlands Air Ambulance Charity

are calling on people across Staffordshire to learn

basic CPR skills for Restart a Heart Day, on Monday

16th October 2023.

Restart a Heart Day raises vital awareness of the lifesaving

impact that CPR and the use of public access defibrillators

can achieve.

The charity is encouraging local schools, groups and

businesses to sign up to the charity’s free Mission Support

skills sessions, which teaches CPR and how to confidently

use an automated external defibrillator.

Each year, approximately 30,000 out of hospital cardiac

arrests happen in the UK. Sadly, the chances of survival

and recovery are less than 10 per cent. If CPR is

performed by bystanders, the person’s chance of survival

can be more than doubled.

the charity’s critical care paramedics, Glenn regained a

pulse at the scene and made a remarkable neurological

recovery.

airbase lead at Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, said:

“Approximately 30 per cent of the 4,500 missions we

attend each year are for out of hospital cardiac arrests.

Chest compressions are such a simple skill to learn and

by taking part in our Mission Support skills sessions, you

will be helping save lives in your local area by having the

confidence to perform effective CPR.”

Learning this simple, yet vital skill ensures that patients

have as much oxygen in the brain as possible for when

emergency services arrive. This can help save lives like

Glenn Richardson’s, who suffered an out of hospital

cardiac arrest in June 2023 at his local gym in Lichfield.

DENE DANCE SCHOOL

CELEBRATES 15 YEARS

Last month, 192 pupils from Penkridge-based

Dene Dance School, took to the stage at The

Gatehouse Theatre, Stafford, for a night of

dancing magic!

This was Dene Dance’s 15th Anniversary show - a

show celebrating the achievements of the School,

inaugurated by owner, Penkridge born-and-bred,

Katy Bagguley, way back in 2008.

Audiences were treated to reprises of iconic routines

spanning the school’s first 15 years, an incredible

journey of Hip Hop, Street Dance, Commercial, Stage

and Ballet & Tap genres. Pupils were also excited to

present some brand-new 2023 dance sets.

The dancers, from under-5’s to over-60’s, danced

with gusto, with a smile on their faces and a pride

in their DDS family. DDS is not just a dance school,

it exudes a family feel and pupils demonstrate this

real team ethos on stage. The audiences left the

auditorium feeling elated after 2 1/2 hours of pure

fun, bopping away to music from all eras.

Dene Dance School meets at Haling Dene Centre,

Penkridge, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays

each week. Their annual Gatehouse Dance Show is

the pinnacle of their dance year.

DDS will be back at the Gatehouse with their next

production in October 2024.

Christmas as French Frank in the

fun-filled fairytale, BEAUTY AND THE

BEAST, from 8–31 December. We

caught up with Mark to find out more:

Hi Mark! You’re a bit of a panto legend

now, how many have you been in?

This will be my eighth one, but it's like

the first day of school! Just doing the

photo call and seeing all the fantastic

costumes, people have all been so

friendly and all the cast are wonderful.

Plus, you get to work with Theo the

Mouse as well, who was the star of the

show the other year!

Oh, that's true! I've heard a lot about

Theo the Mouse. But I'm not here to

take any of Theo’s thunder away –

Theo can be top billing!

Have you been to the Gatehouse

before?

No, but this is a bit of a homecoming

for me as I'm from Wolverhampton,

so very close to Stafford! So it's going

to be great to actually be home for

Christmas. All my mates are going to

be coming this year, which is so cool.

Have you performed in Beauty and the

Beast before?

This is the first time! My mates said to

me, ‘Surely, you're playing the Beast.’

And I was thinking, ‘You cheeky…!’ I've

watched the film, but the panto is a bit

different, so I’m going to be playing

French Frank. I'm really hoping that

the people of Stafford are not wanting

me to do a French accent, because

I can hardly speak English. So, I’ll be

French Frank with a Midlands accent!

What are you most looking forward to

about Beauty and the Beast this year?

The interaction with the audience –

that is why I love panto so much! It's

not like regular theatre where, let’s

be honest, you don't interact with the

audience. For panto, it's lovely to just

chat with them, or throw water over

them and stuff!

So, you’ve heard about the infamous

slosh scenes then?

Oh, yeah. I’m in serious trouble! I’ve realised

that in act two I'm going to have

some right soggy pants. Can’t wait!

Winter-Proof Your

Wild Spaces

Winter-proof your garden to give it the best chance

of surviving the winter season.

For the guardians of greenery,

winter is not merely a period of

hibernation but a season

of preparation.

The crown jewels of any garden,

tender perennials require utmost

care; while potted plants and any

frost-sensitive varieties should

be shielded in containers with

bubble wrap or hessian, or better

still moved indoors or to sheltered

space to shield them from freezing

temperatures and gusty winds.

For in-ground perennials, a thick

layer of mulch serves as a cosy

duvet, safeguarding roots and

preserving vitality for a vibrant

resurgence in spring.

Established shrubs and trees

should not be forgotten, so be

sure to prune away damaged or

dead branches to maintain overall

health and shape.

It can be a good idea to wrap

young trees with burlap or hessian

to protect their trunks from frost

cracks, while securing branches of

shrubs will prevent heavy snowfall

from breakage.

Garden assemblies, such as

arches, trellises and fences require

special attention during winter,

with a coat of weather-resistant

sealant or paint helping to fortify

wooden elements against moisture

and frost.

In addition, ensure that any

supporting structures are securely

anchored to the ground to

withstand strong winds, and keep

drainage areas clear at all times.

Setting out a plan such as this for

will mean that when spring arrives

your green spaces are ready to

flourish all over again.

BREWOOD SINGERS ANNUAL

CHRISTMAS CONCERT

Brewood Singers are delighted to announce that

at the end of their year of celebration for their

50th year their guests this Christmas will be

Jackfield Brass Band 10 piece ensemble. Jackfield

are no strangers to Brewood, having been guests

of the Singers in the full band form and the

ensemble on several occasions over previous

years. A Championship section band, Jackfield are

celebrating their 130th year this year and their 10

piece group always add an entertaining and high

quality musical element to any concert.

The concert will include traditional carols such as

Away in a Manger and Silent Night, festive favourites

such as Feliz Navidad and It’s the Holiday season

and one or two new pieces for the choir, such as The

Muppet Christmas Carol Medley and a brand-new

carol called ‘Christmas Bells’ written for the choir by

their musical director David S Brookes.

COUNCILLORS GIVE GO AHEAD TO BUY

FORMER CO-OP IN STAFFORD

Senior councillors have given the green light for

the borough council to buy the former Co-op

department store in Stafford.

The large building on Gaolgate Street has been

derelict for a decade and proposals could see it

converted into a mix of retail, residential, market

provision, and a food court as part of a major

transformation of the area.

The council successfully secured more than £14

million from the government’s Future High Street

Fund (FHSF) and last night (Thursday) Stafford

Borough Council’s cabinet agreed to the purchase of

the empty store.

The FHSF has already supported the restoration of

the town’s Market Square which will be completed

this month (October) and work to improve the

approach and entrance to Stafford Railway Station -

expected to get underway soon.

The council announced recently that the latest phase

of their ambitious programme would be buying the

former Co-op building as the catalyst to regenerate

the town.

Councillor Rob Kenney, Deputy Leader, with a

mandate to drive town centre regeneration, told

the meeting last night: “The number one issue for

residents in Stafford is the town centre and that is

why we have put it at the top of our priority list.”

He said their aim was to deliver a town centre fit

for the County Town, that residents will be proud

of, businesses will want to invest in, and visitors will

come to shop, eat and drink, and socialise.

And he added: “We said we would listen to local

people and get things done and this is only the start.”

The meeting heard the Co-op project was only “one

part of the jigsaw, that the building would be a “mixed

use 21st century development” and alongside all the

other initiatives would put “Stafford on the map.”

Negotiations to buy some property in the town

centre were made difficult because the Government

announced how much money the local authority

received from the FHSF, a report to the committee

stated - and some ‘absentee’ owners of premises in

the town had been in contact with the council asking

‘unreasonable’ prices for their buildings following

that announcement.

Council leader, Aidan Godfrey, said: “Stafford town

centre is changing and it is very exciting. I am really

looking forward to sharing more information with

the people of Stafford when we have more details.”

There is already significant investment being made

in the county town with other projects underway or

recently delivered such as the Staffordshire History

Centre and the business hub at Shire Hall, which is

reaching full capacity, and plans taking shape around

the Stafford Station Gateway and Eastgate areas.

Mary Berry’s

Mediterranean

All In One Chicken

Introduction

This is a great way to feed the family as the chicken

and veg are all cooked in one very large tray in the oven. It

takes only minutes to put everything together then it sits in the

oven for under an hour with no fussy finishing off to do and only

one pan to wash up.

The recipe allows one chicken thigh and one drumstick per

person, but use less if you are not such big eaters.

Method

1. Preheat the oven to

220°C/200°C fan/Gas mark 7.

2. Place the potatoes in a large

roasting tin with 2 tablespoons

of the oil. Toss well to coat

them. Add the onion, garlic,

bacon and chicken pieces and

toss together.

3. Add the lemons to the

roasting tin. Season everything

well and sprinkle with the

paprika. Roast for 40 minutes.

4. In a bowl toss the courgettes

in the remaining tablespoon of oil

and season with salt and pepper,

then poke them in among the

chicken and scatter the olives

over the top. Return to the oven

for a further 20 minutes, until

the chicken and vegetables are

golden brown and tender.

• Stuffed olives are great, but use plain green or black ones if

you prefer.

• The preserved lemons really give a lovely citrus tang to

the dish – they sit in salt water and are beautifully soft and

citrusy and are well worth using – but if you can’t find them

use one sliced lemon instead.

• Don’t overcrowd the roasting tin, you need everything to be in

a single layer or it will not cook evenly – divide between two

tins if necessary.

• 1kg main crop potatoes,

peeled and cut into 5cm

(2in) chunks

• 3 tbsp olive oil

• 1 large onion, cut into

wedges

• 2 garlic cloves, crushed

• 6 rashers of smoked

streaky bacon, snipped

into 1cm (½ in) pieces

• 6 chicken thighs

• 6 chicken drumsticks

• 5 preserved lemons, cut

into quarters

• 1 ½ tsp paprika

• 3 courgettes, thickly sliced

• 1 x 200g can of anchovystuffed

AVID WRITER ACHIEVES SUCCESS WITH

THE ROYAL SHAKESPEARE COMPANY

‘Alfie and War’

is about raising

awareness about the

situation in Ukraine.

Molly managed this

demanding task whilst also

studying for her SATs.

A keen writer, who attends Penkridge Middle

School, has been selected as a playwright for the

Royal Shakespeare Company. Molly Cartwright,

aged 11 (though 10 at the time of writing), decided

to enter a national playwriting project led by the

RSC and partner theatres. The company wanted

budding writers to compose a play addressing

contemporary issues; with the intention that

the text be used in workshops or performed in

podcasts. Molly’s play was one of the selected 37

from over 2,000 entries: first making the shortlist

of 71.

We are absolutely delighted for Molly for this

amazing recognition of her writing. It typifies her as

an individual and we are so very proud of her success.

This achievement hugely supports our school ethos

of effort, encouragement and excellence and we are

excited to see where Molly’s imagination takes us to

next.

Both of these are a terrific demonstration of what

our pupils can do and I must thank the work from all

staff involved in supporting these pupils to achieve

this fantastic outcome.

It’s amazing what you can find at a car boot sale

and Lynne Sharpe has been searching at the local

sales this summer ready to entertain us for our

Christmas Special. She will be demonstrating to

us how her interpretation of various Christmas

themes using an array of containers. The title of her

demonstration is A Christmas Car Boot Collection,

be prepared to be entertained by Lynne.

As it is a Christmas theme for our meeting and the

darker evenings looming we shall have a bring and

buy stall of Christmas Decorations and Jigsaws - if you

have any that you don’t want any more then bring them

along for our stall, meanwhile have a browse at what

others have brought as there may see what that you

have been wishing for.

Our refreshments will have a Christmasy theme too

with mince pies, these will be available during the

refreshment break when you can catch up with friends,

save a stamp and swap Christmas Cards.

The flowers that Lynne arranged for us during her

demonstration will all go into the raffle which is drawn

at the end of the afternoon. You never know you might

be one of our lucky winners if your ticket is drawn out.

Members, friends and visitors will all be most welcome,

INNER WHEEL CLUB OF PENKRIDGE

THE CENTENARY YEAR OF INNER WHEEL

Our main activity in October was the preparation for

the International Rally held at Lilleshall Sports Centre.

Our International rep. Jackie held a working coffee

morning at her home when we sorted and filled 50

charity shoe boxes, packed 1000 pairs of spectacles

and sorted out, bagged and labelled hundreds of

knitted items including blankets. We would like to

thank all the ‘knitters’ who have worked so hard

to produce these beautiful garments. Eight of our

members attended the Rally, heavily laden with

boxes and labelled bags which will be dispatched

to the International Charities. During the day we

enjoyed listening to informative speakers from

the many charities that we support and we visited

the many charity stalls that had been set up. Our

Club was responsible for the raffle on the day. Our

members contributions made it a very colourful

and successful display which raised a lot of money.

Altogether £1,650 was raised on the day and cheques

were presented to five international charities.

Inner Wheel Club of

Penkridge are very

active in supporting

local charities as well as

the international ones. Inner

Wheel in Great Britain and Ireland

has raised over £2.8 million for various charities in

recent years. All this is carried out in the spirit of

friendship and service.

CANNOCK SOROPTIMISTS

INTERNATIONAL EVENING OF THE SI

The Barns was the setting for the International

Evening of S.I. Cannock and District this year. The

annual event had an American theme with the

room decorated with red, white and blue balloons

and American stars and stripes flags. Members

of the club lit candles to mark each of the 5

federations of this international organisation.

Harrisburg, on the east coast of America was the

first friendship link of the club, establishing the link

in 1967. Former club member Margaret Lyons was

the president of SI Cannock in 1984 and had strong

links with Harrisburg. That year Margaret received a

powder compact as a gift from their president, which

this year Margaret passed on to Cannock’s Team

President Trish Smith for safe keeping.

entertained by

singer Mick Cartwright

– everything had an American

link. Trish Smith thanked Mick for ensuring

everyone sang, danced and racked their brains to

remember the release dates of the songs he sang.

This is a plant that is a firm garden favourite but can be a little temperamental dependent on the weather and site. This

year doesn’t seem to have been a good year for Sweet Peas but it is hoped that Phillippa will put us on the right track

for a good display next year. Phillippa is a Local Specialist and hopefully will be bringing along with her some samples of

old-fashioned Sweet Pea seed.

KATHARINE HOUSE HOSPICE

CEO TAKES ON 5K RUN

The Chief Executive of a Stafford charity took on a 5k run

with family to help raise funds for their cause.

Professor Richard Soulsby has worked at Katharine House

Hospice for more than 20 years and saw the Tatton Park 5k as

an opportunity to help the charity.

He said: “Katharine House is, for obvious reasons, my number

one charity. I know from all the feedback we receive from

patients and families that every day our care teams make a

real difference to them at a really important time in their lives.

“I am always meeting amazing people who raise funds for

us and thought I should show at least some of the personal

commitment that they have shown to support our work.”

Richard completed the 5k on Saturday, 30 September, with

wife Alison, son Jack and his niece-in-law Georgi. Georgi’s

mother, Susan Osbourne, also helped by driving and

supplying the group with food and drink.

Richard had been training for the event for the last four

months: “It was my first time doing a 5k and it was definitely

more of a walk than a run but it was a really enjoyable event,

less so the actual 5k. It was slightly disheartening to be

overtaken in the last kilometer by a gentleman who had run

the 10k and must have been at least 75!

“Tatton Park is a lovely place and I would like to do another 5k

to see if I could improve my time.”

So far the group have

raised more than £1,200

with more coming in.

Richard said: “We’re so

pleased to have exceeded

our fundraising target. It’s just an

opportunity to raise something for the

hospice, so anything is welcomed.

“All funds raised, no matter how much is involved, are really

important to enable us to keep delivering all of our services

for free. What I know is that the money will be put to good use

for the benefit of the people of mid-Staffordshire.”

Katharine House Hospice aims to enable patients with life

limiting conditions to live life as fully as possible and make

the most of the time they have, as well as supporting their

loved ones.

It costs £3.7m a year to provide vital free palliative care

services and they rely heavily on the support from our

community.

ROTARY CLUB OF CANNOCK

CHARITY GOLF DAY

On Tuesday 26th September the Rotary Club of

Cannock hosted a charity golf day at The Chase

Golf Club. In the past this event has been clubs

biggest single fund-raising event.

This year the Rotary club had a tremendous support

with 17 teams taking part from across the region. The

Rotary Club also received very generous sponsorship

from a number of local companies including Brindley

Honda dealership in Cannock who has supported

this event for the last 6 years with a special prize for

nearest the pin on the challenging 9th hole.

The day concluded with a splendid evening meal

with a Charity auction, prize presentations and

raffle which raised over £1000. Club President David

Marklew thanked all involved with the organising the

event and assured the guests that ALL money raised

would be used to support those in need.

This year’s winning team was from Clarkson Hall

independent Financial Advisors closing beating the

runner up a team from Humphries Electrical by only

two points. Prizes were awarded for players with

longest drive, nearest the pin and the winning lady

golfer.

which is now an

established event in

the Rotary calendar,

this year thanks to the

generosity to the teams who

took part and the events many

sponsors, has raised around £3000

The Club plan to use the money raised to help those

in need the local community plus local charities.

The Rotary Club of Cannock is already starting to

plan next year’s event.
