CANNOCK SOROPTIMISTS
INTERNATIONAL EVENING OF THE SI
The Barns was the setting for the International
Evening of S.I. Cannock and District this year. The
annual event had an American theme with the
room decorated with red, white and blue balloons
and American stars and stripes flags. Members
of the club lit candles to mark each of the 5
federations of this international organisation.
Harrisburg, on the east coast of America was the
first friendship link of the club, establishing the link
in 1967. Former club member Margaret Lyons was
the president of SI Cannock in 1984 and had strong
links with Harrisburg. That year Margaret received a
powder compact as a gift from their president, which
this year Margaret passed on to Cannock’s Team
President Trish Smith for safe keeping.
A special message was read out by Lakhwinder
Thompson, the Harrisburg link coordinator, wishing
the club well, finishing with the words of Eleanor
Roosevelt “Women are like tea bags, we don’t know
our true strength until we are in hot water”.

guests were
entertained by
singer Mick Cartwright –
everything had an American
link. Trish Smith thanked Mick for ensuring
everyone sang, danced and racked their brains to
remember the release dates of the songs he sang.

ROTARY CLUB OF CANNOCK
CHARITY GOLF DAY
On Tuesday 26th September the Rotary Club of
Cannock hosted a charity golf day at The Chase
Golf Club. In the past this event has been clubs
biggest single fund-raising event.
This year the Rotary club had a tremendous support
with 17 teams taking part from across the region. The
Rotary Club also received very generous sponsorship
from a number of local companies including Brindley
Honda dealership in Cannock who has supported
this event for the last 6 years with a special prize for
nearest the pin on the challenging 9th hole.
The day concluded with a splendid evening meal
with a Charity auction, prize presentations and
raffle which raised over £1000. Club President David
Marklew thanked all involved with the organising the
event and assured the guests that ALL money raised
would be used to support those in need.
This year’s winning team was from Clarkson Hall
independent Financial Advisors closing beating the
runner up a team from Humphries Electrical by only
two points. Prizes were awarded for players with
longest drive, nearest the pin and the winning lady
golfer.

Mary Berry’s
Mediterranean
All In One Chicken
Introduction
This is a great way to feed the family as the chicken
and veg are all cooked in one very large tray in the oven. It
takes only minutes to put everything together then it sits in the
oven for under an hour with no fussy finishing off to do and only
one pan to wash up.
The recipe allows one chicken thigh and one drumstick per
person, but use less if you are not such big eaters.
Method
1. Preheat the oven to
220°C/200°C fan/Gas mark 7.
2. Place the potatoes in a large
roasting tin with 2 tablespoons
of the oil. Toss well to coat
them. Add the onion, garlic,
bacon and chicken pieces and
toss together.
3. Add the lemons to the
roasting tin. Season everything

well and sprinkle with the
paprika. Roast for 40 minutes.
4. In a bowl toss the courgettes
in the remaining tablespoon of oil
and season with salt and pepper,
then poke them in among the
chicken and scatter the olives
over the top. Return to the oven
for a further 20 minutes, until
the chicken and vegetables are
golden brown and tender.
• Stuffed olives are great, but use plain green or black ones if
you prefer.
• The preserved lemons really give a lovely citrus tang to
the dish – they sit in salt water and are beautifully soft and
citrusy and are well worth using – but if you can’t find them
use one sliced lemon instead.
• Don’t overcrowd the roasting tin, you need everything to be in
a single layer or it will not cook evenly – divide between two
tins if necessary.

• 1kg main crop potatoes,
peeled and cut into 5cm
(2in) chunks
• 3 tbsp olive oil
• 1 large onion, cut into
wedges
• 2 garlic cloves, crushed
• 6 rashers of smoked
streaky bacon, snipped
into 1cm (½ in) pieces
• 6 chicken thighs
• 6 chicken drumsticks
• 5 preserved lemons, cut
into quarters
• 1 ½ tsp paprika
• 3 courgettes, thickly sliced
• 1 x 200g can of anchovystuffed
green olives,
drained
• salt and freshly ground
black pepper

caught up with Mark to find out more:
Hi Mark! You’re a bit of a panto legend
now, how many have you been in?
This will be my eighth one, but it's like
the first day of school! Just doing the
photo call and seeing all the fantastic
costumes, people have all been so
friendly and all the cast are wonderful.
Plus, you get to work with Theo the
Mouse as well, who was the star of the
show the other year!
Oh, that's true! I've heard a lot about
Theo the Mouse. But I'm not here to
take any of Theo’s thunder away –
Theo can be top billing!
Have you been to the Gatehouse
before?
No, but this is a bit of a homecoming
for me as I'm from Wolverhampton,
so very close to Stafford! So it's going
to be great to actually be home for
Christmas. All my mates are going to
be coming this year, which is so cool.
Have you performed in Beauty and the
Beast before?
This is the first time! My mates said to
me, ‘Surely, you're playing the Beast.’
And I was thinking, ‘You cheeky…!’ I've
watched the film, but the panto is a bit
different, so I’m going to be playing
French Frank. I'm really hoping that
the people of Stafford are not wanting
me to do a French accent, because
I can hardly speak English. So, I’ll be
French Frank with a Midlands accent!
What are you most looking forward to
about Beauty and the Beast this year?
The interaction with the audience –
that is why I love panto so much! It's
not like regular theatre where, let’s
be honest, you don't interact with the
audience. For panto, it's lovely to just
chat with them, or throw water over
them and stuff!
So, you’ve heard about the infamous
slosh scenes then?
Oh, yeah. I’m in serious trouble! I’ve realised
that in act two I'm going to have
some right soggy pants. Can’t wait!

LADIES PROBUS CLUB
Chairman Anne, in her third year of office, welcomed
guests from other Probus clubs and visitors, as she
hosted her first chairmans lunch in person, due to
the restrictions during pandemic. Grace was said
by a member of the Cannock and District Ladies
Probus Club, prior to a delicious three course meal a
starter; followed by roast beef with all the trimmings;
pan fried hake with white wine sauce; coq au vin or
mediterranean stack served with tomato sauce. A
choice of sweets served at the Cannock Chase Golf
Club were: apple pie and custard; brandy snap basket
filled with fresh fruit and ice cream; baked vanilla
cheesecake with fresh strawberries and ice cream or
ice cream, then coffee and mints.
Prior to this celebratory meal being served, the magician
Kris Krendo took opportunity to visit tables and gave a
flavour of his magic. He skilfully and smoothly moved
between tables, to avoid disturbing diners but laughter
and cries of amazement could be heard within the
room. Performing ‘close up magic’ involved guests and
captured his audience, to create a fun afternoon, full
of astonishment. This local magician, with 30 years
experience, has entertained far and wide, including the
London Palladium.

brought quality
entertainment
with his sleight of
hand magic. His show
continued, without the use of
special staging or lighting, as he
then presented magic to the full audience. Guests were
included as this highly respected magician kept people
guessing, how he did it. He mystified all with his magic
and left those present, in awe of his versatile skills.
Following that memorable meeting, on 2nd November
members will celebrate the club’s 30th birthday.
Retired or semi-retired, professional or business ladies
normally meet 1st Thursday of each month at The
Chase Golf Club, 12noon to share a meal, fellowship and
speakers on interesting topics, with opportunities to take
part in outings and other activities. New members are
always welcome. Annual membership is £16 and
