AN EXHIBITION OF SMALL SCALE WORKS IN PRINTMAKING
With thanks to all our prizegivers
SMALL BUT MIGHTY
selected by Jonny Hannah
An exhibition showcasing the powerful, ambitious and
impressive nature of works in all forms of printmaking
created on a small scale
EXHIBITION DATES
9 - 19 November 2023
A DOLL’S HOUSE OF WONDERS
Printmaking has never been so vital. Texture, depth & warmth - all of a contrast
to the smooth veneer of our digital age. And almost every time I approach a
printroom, I think ‘poster’ - big & bold. But of course, you can as easily make
mighty statements by printing small, and this collection of exquisite works
shows just that. Take your time to look closely – you’re not scrolling on your
phone over a hurried cup of tea. Enjoy the intimacy, as we peer into a world of
artists’ thoughts, expressed with sticky printing ink, lovingly sinking into the
paper.
Whether printed with the back of a spoon on a kitchen table, or pulled with an
inky squeegee on an unreliable vacuum bed, the good folks here have taken the
time to create something that can’t be achieved on a phone or tablet, and that’s
extra, extra special. Printmaking will always be alchemy to me. This precious
process can now easily be scientifically explained (or can it?), but I don’t want to
know… I’d far rather get up close, and look into this doll’s house of wonders and
still be baffled as to how they did it all. Then of course, be inspired to get my
apron on once more and give it another go.
No matter how many times you print, you know in your heart that the next
attempt is just a wee while away, it’s like collecting pulp paperbacks or rare 78
records. These dusty diamonds, like this magical process, will never end or fully
satisfy. So good people of Small But Mighty, now the show is up and running,
that goal has been achieved.
I’ll see you once more in the printroom.

ABOUT
JONNY HANNAH
GUEST SELECTOR
Using typography with bold
colourful graphics, Jonny
Hannah’s work reflects his
interests in popular culture and
music. He studied illustration at
Liverpool Art School and then the
Royal College of Art.
Jonny Hannah, One Way Town, screenprint
Since then he has been working as
a hugely successful commercial
designer, illustrator and
printmaker. He creates limited
edition screen prints and lino
prints plus screen-printed books.
Jonny’s work has been exhibited widely, and in 2015 Jonny had a one man show at the
Yorkshire Sculpture Park, called ‘Main Street’. This fictional street featured three pop-up
shops made entirely of his 2D and 3D work stocked with curiosities, and showing a sense
of nostalgia for independent retailers on high streets in a bygone era.
In 2014, a monograph of Jonny’s work ‘Greetings from Darktown’ was published.
Darktown is a fictional place that Jonny refers to when overwhelmed by modern life and
this book of artwork, poems and writings provides an insight into Jonny’s passions.
