WHAT KEEPS YOU UP AT NIGHT?
BILL HUGHES
I ask this of people that raise issues
about their personal or work life in
conversation. When asked if they have

talk to someone.
As a certified personal and
organizational development coach,
trainer, and DISC consultant, I offer a
no-obligation consultation to help you
find answers. Contact me at

Riverside Center Presents The Bridges of
Madison County
95 Riverside Parkway, Fredericksburg
Based on the best-selling novel and major motion
picture starring Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood,
The Bridges of Madison County tells the story of
Francesca Johnson, a beautiful Italian woman who
married an American soldier to flee war-ravaged
Italy, looks forward to a rare four days alone on
her Iowa farm when her family heads to the 1965
State Fair. When ruggedly handsome, National
Geographic photographer, Robert Kincaid, pulls
into her driveway seeking directions, though,
what happens in those four days may very well
alter the course of Francesca's life. This sweeping
romance about the roads we travel, the doors we
open, and the bridges we dare to cross will leave
audiences breathless. www.riversidedt.com/thebridges-of-madison-county-2023

THE ALLSTATE COMMUNITY THEATER
A Manfredi Insurance Family Gift to Fredericksburg
If you are a part of Fredericksburg, then you know Live Theater is the town thing. An all new
venue with experienced talent has entered the arena. The all-new 6,000 sft, 200 six level seating,
overlooking the massive 45ft stage, known as the Allstate Community Theater of Fredericksburg, a
$250,000 gift from Manfredi Insurance Group to the theater community. Located at 810 Caroline
Street, the new theater has professional sound and lighting, nostalgic concessions-stand, serving beer
and wine as well.
Ray and Cathy Manfredi created this wonderful space with the theater community in mind. After
COVID hit the area so hard it was clear to the family that many theater groups had to cancel shows and
survive on reserve funds. Prior to COVID these same actor troupes struggled to find venues to put on
shows, typically resorting to school stages, library meeting rooms, or other available space at a
premium that was both costly and counterproductive to putting on a great show.
The Manfredi’s decided they would build a multi-purpose shared resource facility where any
theater group in the area could come and use and share in the resources of the professional grade
lighting, sound, and stage scenery, without the cost. The Allstate Community Theater is managed by
Stage Door Productions (established 1999) and works closely in partnership with Fredericksburg Theater
Ensemble (established 2011). In addition, groups like, Fredericksburg Institute for the Performing Arts
(Workshops and Classes), Keep Your Heart Ministries (Spiritual Concerts), Children’s Playhouse Theater,
Late-Night Karaoke, and other groups use the facility as well, keeping the stage active all year round.
In fact, this year alone, there will be close to 22 full-length productions (plays or musicals) on the stage,
or about two per month.
At the new theater you can see amazing plays, comedies, dramas, and even some thoughtprovoking
edgy theater. In addition, the community will have access to workshops and classes for all
ages, both youth and adult, for theater related fields, including acting, costuming, improv, light and
sound training, set design and constructions, as well as many other avenues of skill building. Any
budding artist or seasoned professional looking to take on new challenges should look here for skill
building opportunities.
Although shows for the most part are live productions, they also have a large projections screen
and will have some classic and edgy films in the after dark program. First up is Rocky Horror Picture
Show during Pride Week.
Still to come at the facility is a small Children’s Workshop Theater Stage, a Dance Studio, and new
Dressing Rooms, and Fully Loaded Green Room with all the things a star needs to get ready before a
show. The project is far from complete, but the results this far are amazing. If you have not yet visited
the new theater, you must do so. You can find tickets to most of the shows at
Www.AllstateCommunityTheater.org, but check back often because every two weeks more
performances are added to the annual schedule. On sale now are tickets to Annie Jr, Improv Live,
and A Christmas Carol – the latter runs for three weekends in December and
always sell out so reserve early.
Bottom line – if you like live theater, you will love this new theater, the
Allstate Community Theater, a gift from Manfredi Insurance to our historic
community, located at 810 Caroline Street Fredericksburg. If your performance or
professional group needs a venue to hold a meeting or put on a show, contact
ray@stagedoorproductions.org. Please contact Manfredi Insurance Group at 877-
971-8830, if you would like to thank the agency for supporting Fredericksburg arts.

HOW IS YOUR ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE?
My client who was a newly appointed vice president was given the mandate to “change the culture of
the organization.” This organization experienced frequent leadership changes at the senior levels. The
members from different groups often struggled to work together. The organization had some dedicated
individuals who made extraordinary contributions but, overall, the organization was known for missed
deadlines and a lack of innovation. This client wanted to create a unified, high performing team. The desire
for culture change like this is not unique and achieving it is not easy.
Culture describes an assortment of unique qualities in a group that passes from one generation to the
next (Kotter & Heskett, 1992). We see culture in the way a group dresses, speaks, celebrates, and interacts
with each other and with outsiders. As new members enter the group, the group shares its culture through
formal training, and rewarding or discouraging behaviors according to the group norms. You can see various
cultures in groups of pilots, accountants, military, and construction trades. Culture helps a group hold its
identity.
Culture goes beyond these visible aspects and exists at a deeper level within a group’s traditions, values,
and beliefs. Values give a leader the greatest opportunity to influence an organization’s culture. Values assist
us in decision-making by establishing the rules and priorities we use to guide our choices. A technology
company may value innovation and being the first to market new technologies. To be first, the organization
may be willing to go to market before the product is perfect. These values may be fine for a gaming company,
but they are not acceptable for an aviation manufacturer.
I worked with a large warehouse retailer that emphasizes safety as one of their core values, not simply
something they practice. For example, every associate, no matter the position, is trained to speak up when
they see a safety concern and to present process improvement ideas to the organization.
Richard Daft (2002) tells us that in organizations with a strong leader, culture is most often the reflection
of the values a leader demonstrates most clearly. Those values serve to shape the culture as the group
members align their values with the organization’s values. Shared values increase the group member’s
motivation and sense of effectiveness within the group. When you think of some of the greatest sports teams,
who consistently excelled year after year, it was because the coach held the players to a set of values. John
Wooden, the famous UCLA basketball coach, led his teams to ten national championships, seven of them in
a row. Those victories were the product of a deliberate culture that the coach passed on to many of his players
and coaching staff (The Pyramid of Success, 2023).
When leaders don’t take care of the organization’s culture, the culture becomes weak. Weak cultures
have unclear norms and behaviors are confusing. Weak cultures are often difficult places to work because the
inconsistencies lead to unclear expectations and poor alignment between individuals' values and the
organizational culture (Warrick, 2017). Over time, group performance declines as group members begin to
work to their own standards. As standards break down, motivation and commitment also follow suit. Weak
cultures also create opportunities for sub-cultures to emerge. Sub-cultures often prove counterproductive as
groups compete for resources.
Back to the VP. He knew that since an undesired culture had established itself, changing it would be a
challenge. We worked together on a plan that would begin to change the corporate culture. First, the
leadership team had to create a new vision for the organization that focused on what is most important to
the organization, their values. Then specific strategies for achieving that vision, including changing the
culture, were created. The change in culture had to start at the top of the organization and work its way down
into the workforce. Since most people resist change, the leadership needed to make a compelling case for
change and create a sense of immediacy. The leadership team gathered key influencers from the workforce
to help evangelize the change process. Employees were rewarded for behavior that positively contributed to
the organization’s culture and performance. The vice president has since moved to another organization and
the change process is still underway. If you are interested in addressing culture in your organization, I would
love to work with you to facilitate that change.

Love Your
Home Again
by: Pam Kuper
Your home is a reflection of your personality, taste, and
style. While it's tempting to rely on cookie-cutter designs and
trends, there's a unique charm in using your own furniture and
decorations to change the look of your space. By infusing your personal touch, you can create a warm, inviting
atmosphere that truly feels like home. In this article, we'll explore how changing wall paint colors, adding new
curtains, and incorporating throw pillows can help you achieve a fresh, personalized look.
Personalized Wall Paint Colors: One of the most effective ways to transform your home's ambiance is by
changing the wall paint colors. Rather than opting for generic shades, choose colors that resonate with you
and reflect your personality. Whether you prefer calming pastels, bold and vibrant hues, or timeless neutrals,
your choice of paint can set the tone for the entire room. By selecting colors that make you feel comfortable
and inspired, you'll create a space that genuinely feels like your own.
Curtains as Statement Pieces: Curtains play a crucial role in defining the atmosphere of a room. They not
only control natural light but also add a touch of elegance and style. Invest in curtains that match your
aesthetic – whether it's luxurious drapes, bohemian prints, or minimalist sheers. By selecting curtains that
resonate with your taste, you'll enhance the overall look and feel of your home. You can even switch them
out seasonally to keep things fresh and exciting.
The Power of Throw Pillows: Throw pillows are versatile and cost-effective tools for transforming your living
space. These small accessories can introduce texture, color, and personality into a room. Experiment with
different shapes, sizes, and patterns to create a layered and visually appealing look. Mixing and matching
throw pillows allows you to change your decor seasonally or whenever you crave a new vibe in your space.
Plus, they provide the perfect opportunity to incorporate your favorite colors and motifs.
Personalized Decorations: Personalized decorations are the heart and soul of your home's interior design.
Family photos, artworks, heirlooms, and souvenirs tell your unique story. Display these items strategically to
create a space that feels deeply personal and meaningful. Whether it's a gallery wall of cherished memories
or a collection of vintage finds, these decorations will turn your house into a home with character and history.
Evolving with Your Style: The beauty of using your own furniture and decorations is that they can evolve
with your changing tastes. Unlike trendy, mass-produced decor, your personal items hold sentimental value
and adapt to your style over time. This flexibility ensures that your home remains a dynamic and ever-evolving
reflection of your personality and interests.
Monica McClellan, owner of White Willow Staging and Design recommends rearranging your furniture.
Sometimes all it takes is a new arrangement of your existing furniture to give a room a fresh look. Also, switch
around your accessories. If you have a collection of artwork, vases and other decorative items, try moving
them to new spots around the house. Lastly, she recommends repurposing everyday objects. There are endless
possibilities for repurposing old items. For example, you could use old books to make a coffee table riser.
The idea is to use what you have and save money so that you can use that money for home
improvement projects such as upgrading a kitchen or bath or putting a new roof on your home. Your return
on those items will provide a terrific return on your home when you are ready to sell.
Infusing your home with your own furniture and decorations, including personalized wall paint colors,
curtains, and throw pillows, allows you to create a living space that is uniquely yours while saving money.

Healthy Generations Area Agency on Aging;
Nobody teaches you how to age, but we can guide you along the way.
Most people don’t know what an agency on aging is
or how much one can help as we grow older. Whether it be for
you, your spouse, mom and dad, or friends and neighbors, there
are approximately 622 agencies on aging covering the entire
United States addressing the needs and concerns of all older
persons. The Rappahannock Area Agency on Aging, Inc., a
private non-profit corporation was organized in July 1976,
under the code of Virginia. In November of 2016, the agency
became known as Healthy Generations Area Agency on Aging
or HGAAA for short. HGAAA, functioning as the Area Agency on
Aging for the City of Fredericksburg, and the surrounding
counties of King George, Caroline, Spotsylvania, and Stafford, is
supported by federal, state, and local funding, grants from the Mary Washington Hospital Foundation and the
Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region, as well as private donations and client
contributions.
Area Agencies on Aging have the responsibility for developing services to meet the needs of those 60
years old and older, their families and caregivers. Through the years HGAAA has provided programs such as
Weatherization Assistance which guaranteed safe household heating systems, as well as making a home more
energy efficient and putting money back into the owner’s pockets rather than into heating bills; the Indoor
Plumbing Program that brought first time indoor plumbing to households without such. Can you even imagine
not having running water in your house? Since 1976, HGAAA has increased the number of people it serves
and the programs provided to the community.
With its mission of enhancing the quality of life for all older citizens, the agency sets out to assist those
remaining in their homes, or what we’ve come to call Aging in Place. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention defines aging in place as: “the ability to live in one's own home and community safely,
independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level.” Older Americans Act programs
speak to the Social Determinants of Health categories of health behaviors, environmental and physical
influences, and social and economic factors. What an agency on aging cannot address are the genes you
inherit and the health care you choose to receive. Let’s break down just how Healthy Generations Area Agency
on Aging accomplishes its mission.
Healthy behaviors include proper nutrition, personal care, and evidence-based wellness programs, as
well as home health and healthy transitions from medical facilities. Programs in place such as the Home
Delivered Meals Program can provide proper nutrition to those who are home bound and can’t prepare their
own meals. The Homemaker Program assists in keeping a home sanitary and provides necessary errands for
those who are unable to accomplish such tasks. This program alone has provided the ability for many clients
to remain in their homes with light housekeeping, dusting and vacuuming, changing bed linens, doing laundry
and completing grocery shopping that allows clients to remain independent longer. Evidence based wellness
programs are provided by HGAAA and include topics that address balance, exercise and management of
chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and COPD. The Long-Term Care Ombudsman program
works to resolve problems related to the health, safety, welfare, and rights of individuals who live in LTC
facilities, such as nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and community-based care. Ombudsman programs
promote policies and consumer protections to improve long-term care services and supports at the facility,
local, state, and national levels. Transitions of living situations can be guided by caring staff who are trained
in resources available to the community. Healthy Generations’ newest program provides vouchers for fresh
fruit and vegetables bought at local Farmers Markets. All of these programs work together to provide healthier
ways to age.
40% of all social determinants of health fall under the socioeconomic heading. These include items such
as socialization at an agency Senior Café, transportation, emergency services assistance to prevent utility
cutoffs or other financial emergencies, and Medicare insurance counseling. Did you know that as a health
issue, social isolation is the equivalent of smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Attending a senior center prevents this;
join us for better health.
Services are available to those aged 60 or older, with the exception of the training/employment program which
is available to income eligible citizens aged 55 or older. Information and guidance are available to all. There are
many more services to talk about and we’d love for you to look at our website, www.healthygenerations.org,
or call us at 540-371-3375 to learn what Healthy Generations can do for you.

Gifting Our Treasures
Years ago, as a very special Christmas present, my
grandfather gifted me his mother’s China. Nothing fancy,
just pieces he and his brother would purchase at the local
supermarket when they were boys and give to her on
special occasions. I will never forget the day my
grandfather gave me this China. He gifted me probably his
most treasured possession and the love on his face for both
me and his mother will be forever etched in my mind.
I often hear children and grandchildren tell their
parents/grandparents they do not want any of the family
keepsakes. My advice is to do it anyway. Feel free to break
up sets of China and furniture and give your family a piece
of you. Gifting memories can bring joy to families and
smiles to both gift giver and receiver.
As for me, it’s not the China but the memory of this
special time with my grandfather and his past that is
perhaps my most treasured possession..

themselves. They learn to Be Prepared. For Life.
Scouting has lots of different programs and age-levels:
Cub Scouts – year-round
program for young boys and
girls ages 5-10 and their families
Venturing – year-round program
for young men and women ages
14-20 (or 13 and have completed

on and in water
Exploring – Real-World, Hands-on Career Discovery – for young men and
women ages 14-20 (or 13 and have completed 8th grade)
Scouting happens in a “unit” – a Cub Scout Pack, a Scouts BSA Troop, a Venturing Crew,

JACKSON’S MOON
By Erik F. Nelson
On May 2, 1863, near a place called Chancellorsville in Spotsylvania County, a near full
moon rose shortly after sunset. A few hours earlier, a Confederate attack led by Stonewall
Jackson had come crashing out of the woods near Wilderness Church and rolled up a poorly
deployed Union corps. The attack had been stunningly successful, but the assault formations
inevitably lost cohesion during an advance of more than two miles. The well-lit landscape,
however, provided the Southern command with a rare opportunity to consider pressing the
advance into the night.
While line officers hastily regrouped their tired fighting men, Jackson used the
favorable visibility to ride forward and reconnoiter. He knew the Union army was also
rallying and wanted to strike before it could consolidate a new position. During this pause
in the fighting, the Southern foot soldiers were not aware their commander had gone ahead
to scout the terrain. When a group of horsemen approached from where the Yankees were,
backlit by the bright moon, the Southern infantry opened fire.
Captain Francis A. Donaldson was a Union soldier at Chancellorsville and described
the night Jackson was shot as follows: “The night was a glorious one, the full moon shining
brightly and making objects quite distinct in the surrounding woods. An occasional cloud
would now and then obscure it, only to make its rays more brilliant as they again burst forth
and illuminated the forest.”
Historians writing of that spring battle have not consistently made clear the
atmospheric conditions during the period when Jackson’s flank attack lost momentum.
James I. Robertson’s biography of Stonewall Jackson (1997) for example, presents seemingly
conflicting statements. The author notes how on the night of May 2, 1863, “the full moon,
unencumbered by clouds, bathed the Wilderness in a silvery light (p. 726).” On the preceding
page, however, he writes that “it was dark when Lane reached the Plank Road (p.725).” On
the next page, he recounts that “sounds became audible some 200-300 yards in the pitchblackness
ahead (p. 727).” The “pitch-blackness ahead” could have meant the shadows cast
by the moon, but the author does not say that.
In 1996, Blue and Gray Magazine published an article detailing the exact time of sunset
and moonrise that day at Chancellorsville. Donald W. Olson and Russell L. Doescher,
professors at Southwest Texas State University, had developed a program that calculated
atmospheric conditions on specific dates in the past and they revealed that the conditions
on May 2, 1996, were going to replicate those of May 2, 1863. The National Park Service
invited visitors to the Chancellorsville battlefield that evening, to see what those conditions
looked like on the ground. Nearly 200 people availed themselves of that unusual
opportunity.
42
Near the site where Jackson was shot, the moon came up 41 minutes before sunset on
May 2, 1996, just one minute earlier than it had on the day of Jackson’s flank attack. On both
days, the moon’s face was 99 percent full. That night in 1996 revealed just how bright the
woods west of Chancellorsville had been when Jackson rode toward the Federal lines. The
experience became perhaps the closest someone could get to a precise Civil War moment.
Jackson surely realized that the moonlit landscape made it feasible for Southern troops
to press forward after sundown. George Washington once wrote that “favorable moments, in
love as in war, once lost, are seldom regained.” The bright night appears to have beckoned
to the aggressive Jackson as his favorable moment, to be seized and exploited. What might
have been, however, got cut short by a volley of musketry.
Note: Sun and moon data for specific days and places in the past is now readily available
from the Naval Observatory. A website at https://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/RS_OneDay can

The Most Valuable Weapon We Have Is Our Awareness
by Montana (Leo Damone) Hairston
I recently had the pleasure of meeting a young
lady by the name of Samantha. After introducing
herself in one of my personal protection classes she
proceeded with an emotional explanation of why she
was there in hopes that her testimony would help
someone in the room. She began by telling us that she
lives a momentous lifestyle which was comfortable for
her until she encountered a strange man who had
followed her home one evening after work. She
described the encounter as the scariest moment of her
life as she stood face to face alone with a stranger. She
said she remembered thinking he probably knew my
name, obviously my address, and possibly what time I
would leave in the morning and come home in the
evening. As she stood in the class with tears in her
eyes, she pleaded for every woman in the room to get
serious about their personal safety. This moment
changed the lives of everyone in the room that day,
including mine. My hope is that her testimony helps
motivate you to elevate your state of awareness.
It’s no secret, crime is on the rise and every time
we tune into media platforms there are reports of
more and more victims whose lives have been ravaged
by criminals! The stories we hear tend to seem like
pages from fiction novels until it hits close to home.
Unfortunately, we can never predict if or when we
might meet evil face to face but being aware can mean
the difference between life and death.
What Does Awareness Really Mean?
Awareness in simple terms, to be
knowledgeable, concerned about or well informed of
your surroundings. Many mistake paranoia for
awareness but there is a huge difference! People who
are paranoid typically worry because of a knowledge
deficiency and lack of planning. Safety and awareness
aren’t some mystical art that requires years of military
or police caliber training. Awareness is simply
equipping yourself with the knowledge you need to
recognize dangers that are present around you every
day. Much like Samantha many of us get caught up in
our daily routine and neglect the obvious hazards that
are right around us all along.
Nonverbal cues are often the first sign of bad
intentions.
Always look confident, make eye contact, and
limit distractions like phone usage while in public
places.
If your eyes are on your phone, they can’t be on
a possible threat approaching you. Making eye contact
and looking confident will often make a perpetrator
think twice about messing with you because they are
looking for an easy target not a fair fight!
You Recognize Room For Improvement
- Now What?
The next step is understanding the dangers that
exist around you every day and formatting a plan of
action in the event you are face to face with an
encounter. Being able to recognize a threat before it
engages can provide you with valuable moments
needed to activate your P.S.P (personal safety plan) The
average engagement happens within a 3 sec window
within a 3-yard radius. Deploying a P.S.P should always
start with retreating or deescalating. If neither of these
two options are possible and you can’t hide from the
attacker, you must be ready and willing to fight
because your life could depend on it. Keep in mind, not
every encounter is firearm worthy! Layering your
protection with an OC spray, taser/stun gun or some
other form of less than lethal weapon in conjunction
with your firearm if you choose to carry one would be
a great idea. If you can get away without pulling out or
using your firearm you will save yourself from
unnecessary criminal and civil charges, thousands in
lawyer fees, and possible long-term trauma.
At this point many of you have been wondering
what happened to Samantha's attacker. Fortunately
for her, a neighbor was leaving their garage and the
noise scared him off and he hasn’t returned. She knew
she needed to prepare herself in the event he showed
up again thus her urgency for training, knowledge, and
a P.S.P. I hope her experience pushes your sense of
urgency to live in a heightened state of awareness. We
can only pray that favor falls on our side like Samantha
and if it doesn’t may preparedness be your grace!
Here are a few tips to help improve
your awareness:
Alternate your departure/arrival times and
alternate travel routes to and from destinations that
you travel too often. This not only can throw someone
off who is following you but it helps raise a red flag if
you are seeing the same person/vehicle on different
routes and at different times.
Be conscious of behavior (body language),
mannerisms (nervousness), and aggressive tones that
seem unsettling. Trust your instincts!
If something feels off, it usually is. I would rather
you trust your gut and be wrong about a threat than to
not trust your instincts and walk into a bad situation!

Are You Hurting Your Success?
by John F. Gillespie, Jr.
In our pursuit of excellence, we often find ourselves trapped
in a paradoxical predicament: the more we value the stakes and
outcomes, the more unnecessary pressure we put on ourselves,
inadvertently sabotaging our performance results and potential for
success. This phenomenon, rooted in psychological intricacies and
societal expectations, has far-reaching implications across many
areas of our lives.
The Psychology Behind Self-Imposed Pressure: The desire
for success and the fear of failure are natural human motivations,
but when taken to extreme levels, they can lead to self-imposed pressure. The fear of not meeting
expectations, whether from ourselves or others, triggers a cascade of anxiety and stress. This can
subsequently hinder our cognitive functioning and decision-making processes, leading to suboptimal
performance. Paradoxically, the very pressure we inflict upon ourselves to enhance performance becomes
a stumbling block in our path to success. Understanding this concept can help reduce pressure and anxiety,
increase authenticity and confidence, lower desperation signals, and give you a relaxed demeanor.
Example 1: Academic Performance
Consider the scenario of a student preparing for a crucial exam. They recognize the importance of the test
in determining their academic future, which fuels their desire to excel. However, this increased importance
can lead to more pressure. The student may adopt a perfectionistic approach, setting unrealistically high
standards. As a result, anxiety and fear of failure may impair their ability to focus during study sessions,
disrupt their sleep patterns, and even trigger a mental block during the exam itself. Consequently, their
performance suffers, and the desired success becomes increasingly elusive.
Example 2: Professional Presentations
In the corporate world, the pressure to deliver outstanding presentations can hinder professionals'
performance. The knowledge that a presentation could influence a promotion, business deal, or reputation
can lead to a cycle of overthinking and self-doubt. This excess pressure can lead to stumbling over words,
forgetting key points, and projecting nervousness to the audience – all of which detract from the
presentation's effectiveness.
Reducing Self-Imposed Pressure: Strategies for Success: While the phenomenon of self-imposed
pressure is deeply ingrained, there are strategies that individuals can employ to mitigate its negative effects
and enhance their performance when the stakes are high.
1. Embrace Realistic Expectations: Setting achievable goals is vital. While aiming for excellence is admirable,
striving for perfection can set us up for failure. Acknowledging that no one is infallible and that mistakes
are part of the learning process can alleviate unnecessary pressure. Setting specific, measurable, and
attainable goals provides a clear roadmap to success without overwhelming oneself.
2. Mindfulness and Self-Compassion: Practicing mindfulness helps ground us in the present moment,
reducing anxiety about the future outcome. Additionally, cultivating self-compassion enables us to treat
ourselves with the same kindness we would offer a friend. This perspective shift allows room for mistakes
and fosters resilience, ultimately enhancing performance.
In conclusion, the paradox of self-imposed pressure on performance is a multifaceted phenomenon
that affects individuals across various aspects of their lives. The desire for achievement is natural, but when
combined with unrealistic expectations and societal pressures, it can lead to suboptimal outcomes.
Recognizing the detrimental effects of excessive pressure is the first step toward a solution. By adopting
strategies such as embracing realistic expectations and practicing mindfulness and self-compassion,
individuals can alleviate the burden they place on themselves and enhance their performance in
situations where success is paramount. Ultimately, by navigating the delicate balance between
ambition and self-care, individuals can redefine success and achieve their goals without sacrificing
their well-being.

The Importance of Situational Awareness for Personal Safety:
Enhancing Decision-Making and Risk Prevention
by Lori Knowles
In today's rapidly changing world, personal safety has become a top priority for individuals.
Whether navigating through crowded city streets, traveling to unfamiliar places, or simply going about
daily routines, being aware of one's surroundings and understanding the dynamics of a given situation
can significantly enhance personal safety. Situational awareness plays a crucial role in empowering
individuals to make informed decisions, identify potential risks, and take proactive measures to protect
themselves. This article emphasizes the significance of situational awareness in personal safety and
explores strategies to develop and maintain this vital skill.
Responding to Emergencies:
In critical situations, situational awareness can be instrumental in responding effectively and swiftly.
By actively observing their surroundings, individuals can identify signs of emergencies, such as fires,
accidents, or acts of violence. This awareness enables individuals to take appropriate action, such as
alerting authorities, evacuating the area, or providing aid to those in need. Being situationally aware
enhances the ability to remain calm and make quick decisions during high-stress situations, potentially
saving lives.
Personal Security Measures:
Situational awareness complements personal security measures, reinforcing their effectiveness.
While employing security measures like locks, alarms, pepper spray, stun devices, or self-defense
techniques is essential, being situationally aware enhances their overall impact. By combining personal
security measures with situational awareness, individuals can proactively assess vulnerabilities, adjust their
behavior accordingly, and identify potential weaknesses in their security strategies.
Developing Situational Awareness:
Developing situational awareness requires deliberate effort and practice. Here are some strategies
to enhance personal situational awareness:
a. Mindful Observation: Cultivate the habit of actively observing your surroundings, paying
attention to details and changes in the environment. Be suspicious of people loitering on the
streets or near the entrance to your home or office. Look around before your leave or enter any
space, such as your car, home, office, elevator, or any building. Be aware of exits, emergency
resources, and potential risks.
b. Risk Assessment: Continuously evaluate potential risks in different environments and situations.
Consider factors such as lighting, people's behavior, and the overall atmosphere to identify
potential threats. Look for items and people that appear out of place. Do not touch anything that
is on your car or placed behind a tire.
c. Maintain a confident, alert mindset: Do not look like an easy target; walk tall and look others in
the eye, greet them; do not walk with earbuds in or with your head down looking at your phone;
if carrying a purse, use the cross-body strap; carry a self-defense item in your hand.
d. Maintain your personal space: Set your boundary’s and have a plan should someone violate
your space. If you are attacked, your options include: fighting, fleeing freezing, posturing,
and complying. Try to move away, but be prepared to take actions should you need to
defend yourself.
e. Information Gathering: Stay informed about the local area, crime rates, and potential hazards.
Utilize available resources, such as news, community forums, or safety apps, to understand
specific risks associated with different locations.
f. Trusting Your Instincts: Learn to trust your gut feelings and intuition. If a situation feels unsafe
or uncomfortable, it is important to take it seriously and take appropriate action to ensure
personal safety.
g. Practice Scenarios: Engage in mental exercises or simulations that simulate potential safety
Situational awareness is an indispensable skill for personal safety in an increasingly complex world.
By being attentive to your surroundings, recognizing potential risks, and making informed decisions, you
can significantly enhance your safety and well-being. Developing and maintaining situational awareness
requires consistent practice and a proactive mindset. By embracing this skill and integrating it into your
daily practice, you can navigate various environments with confidence, reduce vulnerabilities, and ensure
your personal safety.

Winter Survival Tips for Your Birds
When severe weather impacts wild food supplies, some species of birds will turn to bird feeders
as a critical food resource. It is during these times that feeders play their most vital role. If a storm is
of long duration or extreme impact, a feeding station may mean the difference between life and
death for these birds.
Freezing temperatures are only one factor that birds must overcome in order to survive winter.
Wind, storms and wet weather can also rob birds of their ability to stay warm, even at moderate
temperatures.
The most often overlooked winter survival challenge for birds is having to endure a long period
of darkness during a winter night.
Songbirds and other small passerines may use up 75-80% of their fat reserves in one winter
night. Their daily challenge is to find enough food to not only make it through each day, but to also
replace their fat reserves for the coming night -- all in the course of limited daylight hours.
WINTER SURVIVAL TIPS FOR YOUR BIRDS:
Feeders:
• Keep birds dry while they dine. Add a dome cover or hanging baffle to your feeders. Not only
will it help keep the squirrels out of your feeders, it can provide your birds some protection
from the elements while they are eating.
• Placing seed in a ground feeder entices birds such as sparrows, juncos, doves, quail, pheasants,
towhees and thrashers.
• Position feeders near cover but in the open to allow birds to watch for danger.
Food:
• During winter, consider changing some of the types of foods you offer to birds. Many nonmigratory
birds change their diets to replace insects and vegetation from the summer months.
Providing high calorie and high fat foods is important when temperatures drop.
• Suet is a high-energy, pure-fat substance which is invaluable in winter when insects are harder
to find and birds need many more calories to keep their bodies warm.
• Fat is the most concentrated energy source that a bird can consume and stored body fat is the
primary energy supply that fuels a bird between meals and through these long winter nights.
• On cold nights, sleeping birds need high calorie foods to keep their bodies warm.
• Seed/Suet Cylinders are a great option in winter! They last long and do not have to be filled
everyday like traditional feeders. They come in a variety of blends and suet that provide great
winter time calories and energy.
Heated Bird Baths / Bird Bath Heaters
• Birds need water in winter to help stay warm and to properly digest food.
• Provide a reliable source of water for bathing and drinking.
• Add a heater to existing bird baths or use a heated bird bath to keep water from freezing..

Relationships Matter…Nurture Them Every Day
by: William Hughes
I recently went to a memorial service for a friend. We had planned to play golf, but that day didn’t
come fast enough. Instead, I joined with friends to pay respects and celebrate his life. I’ve been to too
many of these of late; it’s inevitable as we get older. And, as I drove home that holiday weekend, the heavy
traffic gave me plenty of time to think.
I was reminded of a recent reunion of my state championship hockey team up north from over 45
years ago. One Friday, while in Hawaii, I was informed of the Monday luncheon and that for the first time,
our coach was to attend along with every living member of the team. My closest teammate, who
happened to be the team captain, asked me to kick it off because he knew that I liked to speak, and he
doesn’t! With our coach attending, I told him I’d get there, ready to go.
He relayed to me that a couple of underclassmen were undecided about attending because of issues
over playing time. I told him to have them come.
Having been so informed, it was important
to find the right words. Words matter. I didn’t
have Woodrow Wilson’s week to prepare for a
10-minute public speaking gig, I had a flight
home, two days to prepare, and then a train ride!
Upon getting home, I dug into my library and
opened “Today Matters,” signed by the author,
John C. Maxwell. The title felt right. I focused my
words on the laws of relationships and attitude.
“Relationships give me fulfillment” and “Attitude
gives me possibilities.”
Coach molded our different personalities into a team with a shared winning attitude. This team grew
from a doormat one year to one of the most potent in the state the next, culminating in a state
championship. The personalities sometimes conflicted with each other, but Coach kept “all that” off the
ice and, over the years, as these teenage conflicts dissolved, many kept in touch with each other. Victory
and maturity forged stronger relationships that lasted over the decades.
At the restaurant, there was much joy and great surprise by my attending from out of town. After
thanking everyone for coming, the captain turned it over to me. I began by identifying the significance of
the event because as we get older, we must pay respect to our relationships that matter, and this team’s
accomplishment was significant to all. Achieving what we did as a group made a difference in every one
of our lives, an early lesson in the action necessary to be successful in any endeavor. Given this
relationship with each other, we needed to recognize that and feel fulfilled.
I reminded everyone that it didn’t come easy. This was a team formed because key players returned
home from prep or private schools to play for the town. A far stronger unit was instantly created. Our
Coach had the personality, knowledge, and experience to mold us and build a winning attitude in us.
Successful hockey teams are anchored by “the room,” the locker room. Relationships inside the room are
key, and then there is attitude. Attitude is that which creates a winning (or losing) identity, and
relationships are the backbone.
Everyone must buy in. With the little luck that every championship team wins with, it was our
attitude that drove us to victory. I closed by expressing personal gratitude to my teammates. Most
importantly, I finished by praising our Coach for his leadership in molding a bunch of teenagers to success.
It was an easy gig as I knew the group and the story’s end. The challenge was to ensure everyone left
feeling appreciated. The two underclassmen both addressed me afterward to thank me for expressing
what it took to be a part of a team and were happy they came.
On the train ride back home, I felt honored to have had a part in putting structure to the day, but in
the end, ensuring those two teammates departed feeling a sense of fulfillment was particularly satisfying.
“Relationships give fulfillment.”
And so it was at that memorial service, I had that sense of fulfillment coming
together with many friends to give thanks to a man who valued his relationships with his
family and friends. If we all nurtured our relationships better, I’m sure we’d have a better
world.
William Hughes, the owner of Leading Eagles LLC, finds fulfillment by helping organizations improve
overall productivity and performance. He is a certified coach, trainer, and speaker with Maxwell
Leadership. Find him at www.leadingeagles.com

The Fredericksburg Art Scene
by Maria Riegger
Few people, visitors or residents, in the city of Fredericksburg, Virginia, are aware that
the city has become a mecca for artists. The region’s natural beauty, along with its important
historic landmarks, stimulates the imagination and nurture creativity. How to immerse
yourself in Fredericksburg’s art scene? We offer a brief guide to get started.
To immerse yourself in Fredericksburg’s art scene start by visiting the Gari Melcher’s Home
and Studio displaying the works of a great American painter who lived in the area until his
death in 1932. You can tour his home and studio
and view his paintings at leisure.
Fredericksburg also has many art galleries that
exhibit works by multiple local artists for viewing
and purchasing. For example, Liberty Town Art
Workshops is easily accessible downtown with
ample parking. You’ll find everything from jewelry,
paintings and ceramics displayed in a large 2-story
building. In addition, Liberty Town offers classes for
children and adults. While visiting downtown
Fredericksburg, also go to Fredericksburg Center for Gari Melcher’s Home and Studio
the Creative Arts located on historic Sophia Street.
The Center offers classes for those wanting to
improve their artistic skills. In Fredericksburg, many
individual artists have their own studios-galleries
showcasing their work accessible to the visitor. One
such studio is Joelle Cathleen Studios located on
Canal Street. Fredericksburg also has several
restaurants featuring a feast for the eyes and a feast
for the palate. Sunken Well Tavern on Littlepage
Street displays art works by local artists once a
month in a casual atmosphere. At La Petite Auberge
you can enjoy the works of local artists in an
Liberty Town
ongoing display while you dine in elegant
surroundings. How about treating yourself to a
glass of beer at Adventure Brewing Co., located in
Eagle Village, where local artists exhibit their works.
The first Friday of the month at Adventure Brewing
Co. is particularly worth checking out since they
welcome patrons with an opening night reception
with live music, and light fare, where you can meet
the artist, whose works are being displayed that
month.
So go ahead, don’t be shy. Immerse yourself in
the Fredericksburg art scene. Be prepared to be
amazed.

WINERIES & BREWERIES
C
1781 BREWING CO.
Our Mission to create truly distinct farmhouse ales
and lagers on our Virginia farm, Reap what you Sow,
sustainability at 1781 Brewing Co, means leaving
little to no trace and replacing our carbon footprint
in meaningful ways. We are continually listed as a
Corporation for Conservation by Ducks Unlimited
and other nonprofits. In 2017, 1781 Brewing Co.
contributed to help conserve over 248,000 acres of
wetlands which are the most at-risk ecological
systems. We also are involved in several USDA
environmental programs for wetlands and forest
and maintain 60 acres of deciduous forest and
buffer zones for the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. All
1781 Brewing Co.'s spent grains and brewery refuse
goes to either compost for our vegetable garden or
to another local farmer, Todd Schlund for his Pork
production.
WILDERNESS RUN VINEYARDS
Wilderness Run Vineyards began as a twinkle-in-theeye
of Robert and Denise Pagan as they looked
across the farm they had raised their family upon.
With the help of their son Harry and lifelong friend
Brandon (and many others), they started reclaiming
what were once dairy pastures and began planting
long rows of vines. After seeing the fruits of their
labor and all of the natural beauty of the property,
they decided what they had built must be shared.
Wilderness Run Vineyards has continually set goals
for the growth of the vineyard and farm. Every year
they have planted an average of an acre of new
grapes. The addition of 1781 Brewing Co. on the
farm has added to a variety of new beverage
options for patrons. The combination of vineyard
and brewery located on their historic property has
allowed them to holdfast to ethos; making the most
out of time with family, serving patrons as they are
our family and giving back to the community.
