CONCERT: The Sumner Silver Band, led by conductor Vickie van Uden, performing at the Old Band Rotunda on Sunday.
Remembrance Sunday
‘an honour’ for band
• By Dylan Smits
THE SUMNER Silver
Band performed its first
Remembrance Sunday concert
since the pandemic to a
crowd picnicking in the warm
weather.
The band played a repertoire
of memorial songs from 11am
to about 100 spectators in front
of Cave Rock.
“It was fantastic. It was so
great to honour Armistice
Day,” said conductor Vickie van
Uden.
Remembrance Sunday, formerly
Armistice Day, celebrates
the end of World War 1.
After a rendition of the Last
Post and a two-minute silence,
the 34-member band performed
songs such as It’s a Long
Way to Tipperary.
Despite being mostly a British
holiday, van Uden said the band
performed to remember both
Commonwealth and British
soldiers who died in the world
wars.
From the UK herself, van
Uden was a globe-trotting
professional trumpet player
before moving to Sumner and
becoming conductor of the
band. • Turn to page 4
More police
a top
priority for
Weenink
• By Dylan Smits
NEW BANKS Peninsula MP
Vanessa Weenink says increased
police numbers and presence in
the electorate is a top priority for
her in Government.
She said the greatest demand
for additional officers comes from
Sumner and Woolston.
“People have complained about
the lack of police around there. I
know businesses are focused on
that, with quite a huge increase in
retail crime.”
But Weenink is short on
detail as to how her plan will be
achieved. She told Bay Harbour
News yesterday she is not sure of
the processes involved.
“There’s no book that I can
read. I’ll start by learning through
experience.”
But whilst she says Sumner and
Woolston are priority areas for
her, it will be police chiefs who
ultimately decide.
“That’s really an operational
matter for police to consider.”
She also wants more police visible
and accessible to the public.
“A bit more of police actually
walking around and out and
engaging with people.”
Weenink said she will meet
with police based in the electorate
as soon as she can.
Fire chiefs prepare residents
for a high-risk fire season
• By Dylan Smits
FIRE AND Emergency New
Zealand has been meeting
with Bay Harbour residents’
associations to help them
prepare for the hot, dry fire
season ahead.
“It’s just about
bringing that
awareness back
to people, that
it’s going to be
drier.
“We just need
Dean
Harker
to be a bit more
cautious than
perhaps we have
been over the
past couple of years,” said FENZ
community risk manager Dean
Harker.
Harker said FENZ has met
with the Diamond Harbour
and Redcliffs residents
associations, to refresh
community-wide and personal
property preparedness.
“It’s pleasing to see the public
is concerned and wanting to
know how they can be better
prepared and increase their
readiness as well,” he said.
Harker said fire risk will be
highest from early January to
March.
On Banks Peninsula and the
Port Hills, high winds from
the El Nino weather pattern will
be a major risk for spreading
fire. In New Zealand, El Nino
can bring more rain to the west
and more dryness to the east.
Harker recommended
residents pay attention to the
wind forecast to decide what
time of day to conduct activity
with a fire risk.
Even a stone hitting a lawn
mower could ignite grass,
which could be spread by wind,
Harker said.
“There’s times of day that
might be good to do that.”
The terrain in the Port Hills
and Banks Peninsula makes it
more at risk of fire, Harker
said.
“The slope actually makes fire
travel faster.”
Harker said FENZ
recommends residents prepare
their own properties to combat
the risk of fire.
“(Things like) making sure
that the gutterings are all
clear. Not having firewood
DEVASTATING:
The Port
Hills fire in
February 2017
burned more
than 1600ha,
claimed the
life of one
firefighter and
destroyed nine
homes.
or anything like that stacked
around or beside your house.
Keeping your lawns nice and
short as well.”
He said FENZ has been
conducting a “multi-agency
approach” to best prepare for
the tougher season.
FENZ is also using its 23
automated weather stations to
determine fire risk based on
temperature and wind strength.
Harker said during risky
periods, fires will be restricted
to those with a permit or
banned entirely, depending on
the assessed risk.
NEWS 3
Bid to
increase
speed limit
• From page 1
“I’ll meet with them and see what
they would like to say and see what
their priorities are.”
Weenink also has a set of infrastructure
priorities for the electorate.
She wants to get funding for the
better maintenance of Dyers Pass
Rd, or see it transform into a subsidiary
state highway to prioritise
funds towards it.
Weenink also wants to see an
increase in the limit on State Highway
75 between Halswell and Little
River from 80km/h to 100km/h.
“That’s one thing that I’d like
to see if the evidence says it’s safe
enough to do that.”
Weenink said she will start
“hopefully by Christmas,” advocating
for these issues.
“I think it’s important, when we
can, to have face to face meetings
to be able to highlight the things
that are really important to the
electorate.”
Weenink plans on attending as
many community events in the electorate
“as she physically can.”
She encourages her constituents
to visit her monthly stall at the Mt
Pleasant Farmer’s Market from
February, or email her at
Growing Christchurch’s ‘lungs’
Silver band
entertains
in Sumner
• From page 1
She has toured with Kanye
West and played for Queen
Elizabeth II.
The band’s performance was
a family-friendly affair, with
members putting out picnic
rugs, and games for the children
watching.
“They were entertained so the
parents could sit and watch,”
Van Uden said.
She said the band was not
bothered by the hot day.
“They are so used to playing
these glorious summer days. We
had such a beautiful, cool breeze
coming from the sea, but not
enough that it blew the music off
the stands. It was just perfect.”
The band will next perform at
the Sumner Community Carols
outside the Village Inn on
December 8.
AN AMBITIOUS project to
plant areas of Banks Peninsula
with 10,000 giant native trees is
nearly halfway to its 2025 goal.
“We like to
think of the southern
Port Hills as
a potential area
to grow the lungs
of Christchurch,”
said initiative
Sophie
Hartnell
co-ordinator Sophie
Hartnell.
Since 2021,
signatory groups
of the Te Kākahu Kahukura initiative
have planted 4165 totara
trees as part of the Podocarp
Enrichment Programme.
They passed the milestone of
4000 podocarps at the end of the
last planting season in October.
Giant podocarps include some
of New Zealand’s most iconic
natives, such as totara, kahikatea
and mataī.
Hartnell said totara were
planted first due to the species’
relative growth speed and resilience.
Te Kākahu Kahukura is a collaboration
between 18 environmental
organisations, agencies,
hapū, and private landowners,
overseen by the Banks Peninsula
Conservation Trust.
Its name represents the goal
of the project. Kākahu means to
dress or clothe, while Kahukura
is a Māori god, in legend
responsible for creating Banks
Peninsula’s forests. Natural
regeneration, planting and
pest control are all parts of the
initiative.
Planting the giant podocarps
is a key aspect. The initiative’s
signatories will begin planting
kahikatea and mataī next year.
Hartnell is unsure whether the
programme will reach its 2025
goal due to the pandemic causing
delays at the start.
“We anticipated we could get
the 10,000 in the ground, it may
take a bit longer.”
The large trees will seed the
land and make way for thriving
native forests.
Hartnell said it is a crucial
local solution to help address
climate change and the global
biodiversity crisis.
“The Canterbury Plains are
sort of stripped of any . . . native
biodiversity. The Port Hills
seem like the perfect place to
remedy that.”
Te Kākahu Kahukura began
in earnest in April last year,
with organisations signing a
memorandum of understanding,
although conservation work was
already under way. More organisations,
such as the Lyttelton
Port Company, have signed up
since then.
The initiative is part of the
BPCT’s overall ecological vision.
One of its goals is to plant four
1000-hectare native forests
across Banks Peninsula by 2050.
Girl Guides ready
to set sail on the
101-year-old
about teaching
kids how to sail
• By Dylan Smits
AN AKAROA skipper has
turned his passion for sailing
into a commitment to educating
children.
Roy Borrelli
has provided
sailing lessons
for children
for 18 years
through the
Cansail Charitable
Trust.
Roy Borrelli
“It gives me a
higher purpose
in life,” he said.
Borrelli’s involvement with
Cansail began when he met
Grant Robinson, the previous
owner of the Fox II – a 101-yearold
sailboat – forging an instant
connection that led him to
volunteer.
Reflecting on his early years
with the charity, Borrelli said: “I
enjoyed it so much I ended up
buying the boat from him and
continuing working for the charitable
trust to keep it going.”
Originally from New York,
Borrelli moved to Akaroa
22 years ago with his wife Sarah
and twin children.
The 57-year-old first volunteered
for the Akaroa fire brigade
and St John.
He now plays a pivotal role in
Cansail by providing the Fox II
for teaching purposes.
The ketch was crafted from
Kauri timber in 1922. It is a
maritime treasure Borrelli and
his team of 15 volunteers work
tirelessly to maintain.
However, he said the effort
of maintaining the boat is outweighed
by the satisfaction of
contributing to the community.
Borrelli said he often sees the
children’s confidence improve on
a trip.
“We had one girl who was
terrified of water. By the end of
the trip, she gained confidence,
overcoming post-traumatic
stress from a previous sailing
incident.”
Borrelli and his volunteers
focus on imparting essential
sailing skills to children during
their programme, which runs
seven days a week from October
to May.
“Teaching children is reward
enough for the volunteers,” he
said.
During a typical day trip, the
crew will teach the basics of
navigation, nautical terms, boat
safety, steering and how to operate
the sails as a team.
“They have fun in a new,
initially scary environment,
overcoming anxiety to become
confident sailors by the trip’s
end,” he said.
The programme, which teaches
up to 1500 students annually,
prioritises low decile schools and
special needs children.
School groups – usually 20-25
people – are asked to contribute
$200 for a class trip, a discounted
price due to donations the charity
receives.
Borrelli said no group is prevented
from sailing due to economic
hardship, and all funds go
back into maintaining the aging
Fox II.
His commitment to creating
memories for children goes beyond
technical instruction.
“It feels positive and rewarding
helping teach children,” Borelli
said.
A business that started out as a food
truck with a successful catering arm,
has grown into amuch bigger
hospitality enterprise – a restaurant
and bar named Smoke ‘n’ Barrel,
located in the heart of Woolston
Village.
Owned and operated by experienced
chefs, Indiana-born Cory Blackburn
(the Hoosier) and Kiwi Chris Geary,
and Cory’s wife Renee, it opened in
March this year in the premises previously
occupied by The Twisted Hop
at 616 Ferry Road.
“The building had been empty for
about three years, so it was great to
bring some life back into the space,”
says Renee.
For the restaurant, the focus is on
Texas BBQ food incorporating Kiwi
and Mexican influences, with dishes
designed for sharing. Renee and
American-born Cory had catered
their own wedding, so were confident
“The beef brisket Reuben burger is
world-famous in Christchurch,”
says Cory, “and I invite customers to
Living Between Land & Sea
The bays of Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour by Jane Robertson
This superbly illustrated history of the people who settled in the many bays of
Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour is full of finely observed insights into the challenges
of living in small, remote communities. Acknowledging the rich history of Te Hapū
o Ngāti Wheke and their guardianship of this place, the book describes the early
history of Māori in the region, as it takes a geographical sweep around the harbour
from the signal station at Te Piaka Adderley Head to the lighthouse at Awaroa
Godley Head. In between, the stories of the bays and islands of this picturesque and
historic harbour are described with fascinating details of early and contemporary
life including maritime history and dramatic rescues, farming and trade, wartime
experiences and quarantine stations, tourism and recreation.
Once a King
The Lost Memoir of Edward VIII by Jane Marguerite Tippett
The real story of Edward VIII - the King who abdicated the throne in 1936 - told in his
own words, using an unpublished memoir and other never seen sources. Fifteen years
after having abdicated the throne to marry the woman he loved - Wallis Simpson
- King Edward VIII, now the Duke of Windsor, published his memoirs. But whilst
preparing the manuscript for his published and mostly ghostwritten book - which,
unlike Prince Harry’s autobiography Spare, largely avoided controversy - the Duke
also produced a private manuscript for posterity. This was written in his own words
and with an uninhibited frankness. Once a King: The Lost Memoir of Edward VIII
reproduces this uncrowned King’s previously unseen writing...it’s an extraordinary
new portrait of one of the most famous characters in modern royal history and his
recollections and innermost feelings, particularly around the abdication of 1936.
Living Big in a Tiny House
Exploring small-space design projects from New Zealand and
around the world by Bryce Langston
This is a book about the big world of tiny houses. With housing affordability issues
at an all-time high, the tiny house movement is rapidly growing as people downsize
their homes in search of a bigger life. Over the past 10 years, author Bryce Langston
has travelled the world telling the stories of these inspired individuals, visiting the
wonderful homes they have constructed and gaining insights into their way of life.
In this fully revised book, first published in 2018, the reader will be transported into
a world of imagination, innovation and an alternative way of living, where people’s
lives have been transformed through the decision to build a tiny house. This book
is based on the hit YouTube show Living Big in a Tiny House. Now one of the most
watched architecture shows on the planet.
The Crewe Murders
Inside New Zealand’s most infamous cold case
by Kirsty Johnson and James Hollings
Fifty years on, the unsolved mystery of who killed Jeanette and Harvey Crewe in
their farmhouse in 1970 continues to fascinate New Zealand. The subsequent trial
of Arthur Allan Thomas was, for many New Zealanders, the first time they had had
reason to question the fairness of our justice system. The unsolved mystery of who
killed Jeanette and Harvey Crewe in their Pukekawa farmhouse in 1970 continues
to fascinate. It remains one of the most controversial cases in New Zealand legal
history. After two trials, two appeals, findings of police corruption it resulted in a
free pardon. Combining gripping narrative, detailed research and new insights from
key players, this book tells the complete story of the case for the first time.
Young creatives exhibit art
• By Dylan Smits
YOUNG creatives showed off
their art to family and friends at
a Lyttelton exhibition on Friday.
Pupils from Redcliffs School,
Mount Pleasant School and Lyttelton
Primary School worked
with the kaupapa (a set of principles)
of Whakaraupo Carving
Centre Trust, highlighting the
importance of birds and their
protection.
Gallery director Damian
Mackie said the Rei Gallery
Kā Kura Kā Manu exhibition
gives young artists experience
presenting their work.
“It allows the young artists to
express themselves in ways that
they can through visual arts,
but you have got to be brave to
exhibit as well,” he said.
Eve Rees, 13, from Lyttelton
Primary digitally designed a tui,
complimenting the overall bird
theme.
“It’s one of my favourite birds
and I find it quite inspiring,” she
said.
Eve appreciates the bird for its
colours and its song she hears on
the way to school.
She said the flax and green
colouring in the image represents
Māori culture and nature.
Eve is proud of her efforts
working hard for three days
ARTISTIC: Eve Rees, 13, with her digital art of the Tui bird, and Max Finnelly, 13, and Nikau
Mackie, 13, showing off their art piece.
before the deadline to submit
her work.
Two pupils from the carving
centre showed off a wooden
hawk’s head with blood splatter
to represent bird roadkill and
the harm humans inflict on
birds.
Max Finnelly, 13, and Nikau
Mackie, 13, worked with their
carving teachers to paint and
detail the piece with Māori
symbols.
“I am pretty proud, it’s like my
first big piece,” Max said.
He hopes to continue his
carving journey when he starts
at Hagley College next year.
Mackie hopes the Rei Gallery
on Norwich Quay will continue
to serve as a space for young
artists to present their work.
• The children’s work
will be on display at Rei
Gallery until November
27. On November 28 the
exhibition will display
works from the gallery’s
artist collective until
January 5. If you have an
GREAT TO see the article about
the bays’ communities getting
together for planning to respond
to potential disasters, and to see
each area working to develop
its capability according to local
needs, threats and priorities.
The revamped Civil Defence
has been really helpful and instrumental
in facilitating this.
In Redcliffs, we set up our
response and resilience team in
2017 after the Kaikoura earthquake
led to a tsunami warning
here. It was an initiative of the
Redcliffs Residents Association
and we modelled it on the Mt
We welcome any local residents
who would like to be involved
with planning. The team has
equipped a community emergency
hub that can be opened as
a co-ordination centre in case of
We would love people to look at
‘Littely’ steps up to help
• By Sasha Watson
VICKI CAREY may call herself
a little person, but that doesn’t
stop her from fitting into a
“normal height” world.
Standing at 122cm tall, Carey
is no stranger to accessibility
difficulties and that is why she
has joined the city council’s
accessibility advisory group as
the first “littley”, in hopes of
educating others.
“We are not disabled, we are
disadvantaged – we are normal,
we just can’t reach high places,”
said the 59-year-old.
After moving to Christchurch
from Blenheim with her
husband, Wayne, last year
Carey said
she has
found “more
opportunities
and more
specialists”
down here
which has found
Vicky Carey her confidence
grow.
“I am very excited to be in this
position as I hope something
will happen. Perhaps it won’t for
this generation, but definitely
the next. We need to work on
making ‘normal’ accessible for
WITHIN REACH: Vicki Carey spoke to Hornby Rotary Club before joining the city council
accessibility advisory group, where she can make things better for “little people”.
little people.”
Carey will attend her first
advisory meeting on Tuesday
and is hoping to talk about
making changes to doors,
public toilets, chairs and tables,
mobility parking, counters,
shower heights and privacy.
“These are the things normal
people take for granted,” she
said.
“Most public toilet/shower
doors are standing at a standard
height of about 15cm off the floor
. . . you’ll be able to see me if you
take one step back.”
She began working in
accessibility advisory in
Blenheim and said she “really
enjoyed it”, even though there
is a large stigma which is
“devastating”.
“With my life skills and
how I’ve had to adapt, I hope
I can help make things easier
in reviewing the range for
measurements and standards.
There are not many “little
people” in New Zealand, and
there has been no voice,” said
Carey.
Her voice and vision of
bettered accessibility have
already been shared with the
Rotary Club of Hornby team and
Carey said: “While it was a big
step to talk in front of a crowd,
I am more confident now and
was met with enthusiasm and
support.”
“Now, it is just about getting
familiar with my role and I hope
to make things more accessible
for “little people”, but not out of
reach for others.”
TREASURES FROM THE PAST
The Ōtoromiro Hotel and ocean view
ŌTŪTOHUKAI IS the Ngāi
Tahu name for the ridge west
of Dyers Pass Rd that overlooks
today’s Governors Bay. It
means “the place where food
was pointed out”, and from
its heights looking toward
Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour
one can view the whole domain
of what is an important region
for Māori, providing shelter and
food over many centuries.
Today the harbour, its port
hills and secluded townsites are
home to tangata tiriti and tangata
whenua alike. Before colonisation,
one would have looked out
over sweeping slopes of native
pines down to the sandy bay
below and on to the wide vista of
the harbour out to the ocean.
The secluded sandy bay below
Ōtūtohukai was known to tangata
whenua as Ōtoromiro, “the
place of the miro” (Prumnopitys
ferruginea), the endemic brown
pine.
When in season, the miro’s
red berries attracted the kererū
(native pigeon), and the pine’s
fine-leaved branches were used
for the building of whare. At a
certain time of year, whenever
the whakarua or north-easterlies
were blowing, pioke (sand
sharks) would move up towards
Ōtoromiro Bay where the Māori
of Rāpaki would gather to fish
them from the shallows. These
natural resources made Ōtoromiro
a valuable mahinga kai
area for Waitaha, Kāti Māmoe
and Ngāi Tahu.
In 1849, some 160 years
after Ngāi Tahu laid claim to
Whakaraupō, the British Crown
acquired 65,000 acres (26,000
hectares) around Lyttelton Harbour
from the hāpu and iwi.
The colonisation of Canterbury
followed in quick succession
from 1850, with the first Pākehā
settlers of the land around
Ōtoromiro, Robert and Mary
Harris, followed by John Dyer
and friends in late 1851.
Dyer was a successful farmer
and bought land down to the
water, with a jetty and road built
around 1858-62. (Thus it was
Ōtoromiro came to be known
for a time as Dyer’s Bay.) Access
Lyttelton Museum ref 14985.84 https://www.teuaka.org.nz/online-collection/1136091
to the bay was either via steam
or sail boat, the Māori walking
trail from Ōhinehou Lyttelton
through Rāpaki, or the old
Māori track winding up and over
Pukeatua (later the Dyers Pass
Rd) to the Waitaha Canterbury
Plains.
As more settlers arrived
to farm the harbour’s fertile
volcanic soils, Whakaraupō
became the orchard and
market garden for the growing
city of Christchurch. In 1856,
the Canterbury Provincial
Council provided funds for
the construction of a carriageworthy
bridle track out to Dyer’s
Bay and beyond.
William Foster opened the first
hotel in the area, the Travellers’
Rest, around 1859, at the northern
entry to the village more
often referred to as Governors
Bay by that time.
Foster was granted a general
licence under the Public House
Ordinance in 1862, and when
the nearby Foster’s stone bridge
(now Radcliffe bridge) was built
the following year, the Lyttelton
to Governors Bay bridle path was
open for heavy wagons.
At some point early on, a Mr
FW Beechey purchased the 50
acre (20 hectare) lot above the
bridle path overlooking John
Dyer’s section down to the Governors
Bay wharf.
It was on this land, at the
centre of the growing village, a
second hotel was established in
1870 – the Ocean View Hotel,
with one May Haulk the founding
proprietor.
Apparently unlicensed, or
perhaps just ‘off the records’,
the hotel featured comfortable
boarding rooms for travellers
with that iconic view at the head
of the harbour. Along with the
village church, St Cuthbert’s,
built by Edward Morey in 1860,
this village tavern would have
been at the heart of the mid-
1800s English village life taking
form around Ōtoromiro’s secluded
bay.
By this time, Dyer’s Bay had
long been known as Governors
Bay, based on the doubtful
legend Governor Grey anchored
Her Majesty’s sloop of war Fly
there in 1850, instead of in Lyttelton
port, when he came down
to greet the first Canterbury
pilgrims.
Times were obviously tough
for the hospitality business back
then and there are a further 15
proprietors recorded after Ms
Haulk over the next 30 years,
through to 1900 when Joseph
Bowes ran the Ocean View from
1898-1902.
Six more managers came and
went until George Parsons took
the licence on from 1908-09.
Despite the high proprietor
churn, the Ocean View Hotel
in Governors Bay remained a
viable business and focal point of
village life under that very name
for another 70 years after Mr
Parsons sold it on.
The longest serving Ocean
View publican was Dave Rogers
from 1940-1965, followed by Pat
and Judy McCarthy from 1965-
1975.
In 1980, the Ocean View
became the Smugglers Arms for
20 years before being renamed
again as Governors Bay Hotel in
the year 2000.
The current proprietors Jeremy
and Clare Dyer have made the
old place their home since 2003.
The heritage hotel was one of the
very few Whakaraupō hotels that
survived the February 22, 2011
earthquake.
In 2020, on the 150th anniversary
of its founding, the old
Ocean View Hotel was once
again renamed, this time as
Ōtoromiro Hotel, bringing our
naming story full circle.
The establishment remains a
favourite haunt of local harbour
dwellers and ‘flatlanders’ alike,
with its beautiful gardens and
peaceful deck still affording
a view over the waters of
Ōtoromiro towards the ocean.
16 Bay Harbour News Wednesday November 15 2023
Sportier, spacious Honda Civic
A SMALL hatchback hit here for
decades, the Honda Civics isn’t
feeling the same amount love
from buyers these days, with
many seduced by the masses of
trendy SUV offerings on our
market.
With sales in excess of 27
million since its global launch
50 years ago, the Civic has
really put on Honda on the
world automotive map. Simple
and clean lines distinguish this
latest version from its intricately
styled predecessor. There is more
than just strong visual appeal.
It is now a sportier drive, offers
greater space, especially in the
rear seat area, along with easier
access to the cargo compartment.
Upgraded suspension, chassis
and a high-rigidity body improve
dynamics and reduce noise and
vibration NVH. Safety is further
enhanced with an updated
version of Hondas Sensing and
TrafficJam Assist. Powertrain
improvements provide additional
performance and refinement.
With a coupe-like profile
inspired by European sport
backs, this latest Civic sports
a new exterior design in a
distinctive and sporty way.
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
A low bonnet, front fenders
and horizontal beltline add an
expansive, airy greenhouse look
and feel to the cabin. Compared
to the out going model this one is
bigger in almost every direction.
By how much you rightly say? A
fair bit really with a 35mm longer
wheelbase.
Both ends of the car look
sharp. A unique tail light design,
and high-mounted stop light
spans nearly the entire width of
the vehicles hatch, accentuating
its wider rear track. LED lighting
is used extensively for the
exterior, including the wide-set
headlights, daytime running
lights, parking lights and fog
lamps.
Two Civic models are offered
on our market starting with
the price leading $47,000 Sport
being reviewed here, or a $52,000
special edition MUGEN. This
makes clever use of a variety of
high quality MUGEN body kit
components to create a striking
looking vehicle.
A revamped version of the
zippy 1.5 turbo engine is ready
to rumble with more power and
torque. It now produces 131kW,
5kw more than its predecessor
and 240Nm of torque a 20nm
gain. In isolation, not massive
bumps in power and torque.
However, collectively they take
performance up a good notch
or two, with the torque getting
to work from just 1700rpm. In
real world driving the motor is
all smoothness and tractability.
Acceleration is brisk and
satisfying and gone is the coarse
edge the previous engine had
when working in the higher rev
range.
A much-improved take on the
Civics familiar Constant Variable
Transmission (CVT) now
features Normal and Eco driving
modes and a user-selectable
Sport mode. It feels more
response and in tune with the
engine, with enough electronic
smarts on board to get the most
out of it.
A generously proportioned
cabin and cargo space is among
the best in the small car class,
with a more accessible luggage
area that’s 40mm wider. The
standard 60/40 split rear seat
back can be quickly folded down
for more load space, with the
side-pull cargo cover making
it super easy to quickly open or
conceal whatever you have in the
rear cargo area.
Impeccable attention to detail
is evident everywhere in the
cabin including an instrument
panel design, with minimal
cut lines to reduce windshield
Rating out of 10: Performance 7; Handling 7;
Build Quality 7; Comfort 6; Space 7; Styling 6; Test
consumption 7.4L/100km; Value for money 6; Safety –
5-star ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 7
reflections. The generous use of
quality materials throughout,
especially on touch points is
a notable feature. Plenty of
effort has gone into providing
a premium look and feel to the
switchgear and controls.
This is the most technologically
advanced Civic Hatch yet
featuring a new 7-inch color LCD
driver’s display. It shows a variety
of user-selectable information,
such as the current music
selection and a trip computer,
on the left and right side of the
screen.
The status of various Honda
Sensing safety and driverassistive
systems, including
brake lights, headlights and turn
signals that switch on and off
with those functions. In addition
to large, easy-to-recognize icons
and a simplified navigation
structure with fewer embedded
menus, the touchscreen features
a proper volume knob and hard
buttons for Home and Back
functions. A 0.8-inch finger rest
immediately below the screen
provides a stable surface to rest
your hand – a handy idea.
There’s a new single-camera
system providing a longer,
wider field of view than its
predecessors radar-and-camera
based system. Combined with
software advances and a new,
more powerful processor, the
system is capable of more quickly
and accurately spotting hazards,
along with road lines and
signs. Honda Sensing also adds
Traffic Jam Assist, and the new
camera- based system improves
on existing functionality, such as
more natural brake application
and quicker reactions when using
Adaptive Cruise Control. It also
offers a more natural steering
action when using the Lane
Keeping Assist System.
The suspension and steering
were developed in Europe and
feel like it from behind the wheel.
It reaffirms my view, that the
Civic Sport is the best all round
riding and handling model in
the current Honda range. The
suspension reacts quickly and
decisively to steady the car, when
it’s under siege from sudden and
unsettling changes in the road
surface.
With a wide and low-slung
stance this newest Civic feels
reassuringly well planted on the
road. However, this makes it a
bit of a liability when driving on
our extensive network of metaled
rural roads, with large mounds of
gravel down the middle of them.
These gave the vehicles under
belly a good tickle up, and a bit
of gravel rash for good measure
on the one’s I sampled albeit
briefly. Overall, the test car felt
confident and composed with the
suspensions nimbleness a real
stand out.
