World Scholars Academy

Why Did You Choose To Participate in

WSA Coders Academy?

Growing up, we didn’t have anyone in the family that

understood electronics and as the eldest child I was

the one to solve the computer related problems in the

house, which ultimately led me to know my way around

computers. However, I had a lot of questions about the

logic of computer science and how everything worked

together. I wanted to participate in WSA Coders

Academy, for I knew I wanted a strong foundation

and understanding of basic concepts.

How Did You Decide Which Summer Program

Was Right For You?

I researched a lot of pre-college introductory computer

science programs, however most of them did not offer

the collaborative and interactive environment WSA

Coders Academy program offered. As a person who

tried to learn programming via pre-recorded lectures

for six months and almost gave up hope of ever

learning programming, this was a huge plus for me.

The course was given by an amazing instructor with

experience in the field, which was a factor I looked for

as I had many questions to ask. Lastly, the WSA Coders

Academy course material included introductory yet

extensive content which was certain to set a strong

foundation for my computer science journey.

What Was a Typical Day Like in Your Summer

Program?

A typical day would begin with solving the unsolved

questions of yesterday’s homework with our instructor.

We were encouraged to brainstorm together as

a group and come up with a solution and he would

only step in if we were totally lost. The lesson would

move on with the instructor’s presentations that were

8 | 2023 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

very interactive and supported by real-life examples,

we sometimes played fun games to understand certain

concepts. Whenever we didn’t understand a part from

the presentations we would go to our Python IDE

(Integrated Development Environment) and try for

ourselves how a certain code would work.

Then we were assigned take-home exercises that

helped us practice what we learned that day because

after all programming is mostly about practice. I had

somewhat of a guess what I would learn in a two-week

program but this was beyond my expectations. I learned

so much in two weeks that even I was surprised.

What Was the Most Memorable Moment of Your

Summer Program?

My most memorable moment of the program has to be

when I first wrote a complex code without the help of

my instructor. One of the exercises of our daily assignment

was writing a Python code to check the validity of a

password. It was a challenging code to write as the code

needed to check for many factors like symbols, digits,

number of characters, etc. However, I was able to write a

fully functioning code after a lot of trial and error. It was

a very important moment for me as it was the first time

I’ve written a code that was used in real life as we often

come across such code at every website when creating

passwords. It was a moment which made me sure of my

decision of studying computer science and eventually

pursuing it as a career.

What Advice Do You Have For Teens Looking for

Summer Programs?

When looking for a summer program, make sure to

check the program’s curriculum, whether it meets

your wants and standards, the instructor, as the

instructor is a very important factor in understanding

complex concepts, and its environment, an interactive

environment was a must for me, and I chose

accordingly. If the program meets all of your personal

requirements. then go, enjoy, and learn something new!

LEARNING RECOVERY:

Bridging the Gap With Summer Programs

BY JOHNATHAN D. KINDALL

very summer, parents and educators can expect

some “brain drain” from their teenage students.

Time away from the classroom naturally results

in the so-called “summer slide,” and while there’s

plenty of things that parents and students can do

to fight it, some degree of summer learning loss is understandable,

typical and inevitable.

However, as you probably well know, the last two years

have been anything but typical. These times were

difficult for students of all ages, and the learning loss

was tremendous, widespread and devastating. COVID-19,

remote learning, staffing shortages and more have made

the last two years of learning incredibly difficult for students

and teachers alike, and while many schools have

started making strides to recover and find a new sense

of normalcy, the learning loss from this period cannot

be understated.

During the pandemic, test scores and other important

performance indicators of student success dropped by

a large margin, and while recovery efforts are underway

in school districts across the country and world, the

work is slow-going. For starters, the learning loss was felt

differently across various groups, and there’s no guarantee

that what works for one student will work for another. In

fact, the amount of learning loss experienced varies greatly

based on age, location and income level, and the pandemic

only intensified many inequities already present within the

education system.

Additionally, it’s hard to know exactly what is working, as

schools are trying anything and everything to help recover

from their losses. Initiatives like specialized tutoring and

intensive after-school programs are great and certainly

successful to some degree, but, at a large scale, it's unclear

which countermeasures are having what effect.

What is clear however, is that summer enrichment

programs are more important than ever. For more than

a decade, TeenLife has championed the many benefits of

summer programs, and now, the stakes have never been

higher. Summer programs, like all of the opportunities

listed in this guide, offer a specialized, structured and outof-the-classroom

experience that is all but guaranteed to

help students fight the summer slide.

UC San Diego Research Scholars

Why Did You Choose to Participate In This

Program?

I chose to participate in UC San Diego Research

Scholars: Marine Biology because I have been a part

of other Marine Biology programs and lectures at

Birch Aquarium, and wanted to continue my studies.

I have a passion for Marine Biology and UCSD is an

excellent place due to its field research at Scripps

Institute of Oceanography (SIO). The ocean is a key

part of this world, and I feel especially connected

to it and its inhabitants. This program gave me the

opportunity to dive deeper into marine organisms

and discuss environmental impacts.

How Did You Decide Which Program Was

Right For You?

I was looking for programs to participate in during my

school breaks to further my education on a topic I was

interested in, which led me to the UCSD website. I was

looking through the academics page and found the

UCSD Extension department. I had visited the UCSD

campus for a lecture at Scripps when I was younger

and thought that participating in their Marine Biology

programs would be fantastic. I looked at the catalog

and chose a course involving coral, as I knew it was

an important ecosystem whose existence is currently

threatened by climate change. After participating in

the course, I immediately wanted to enroll in others,

as I discovered a community of people who shared

an interest in my beloved marine world.

What Was A Typical Day In Your Program?

During the course of the pandemic, I took two online

classes on Marine Biodiversity. I would join Zoom

meetings for the synchronous/in-class work, by

using the platform, inkwire, to complete homework

14 | 2023 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

assignments. In the Zoom meetings, I would learn about

the topic for the day with a guided lesson via Canva or

on an interactive platform called Decktoys. The Canva

slides would allow us to take notes easily while listening to

lectures and Decktoys lessons provided a framework for

engaging in classwork.

Specifically, Coral Reef Ecology and Conservation covered

the ecosystem of coral reefs, including an in depth look

at coral’s unique organismal biology. This course focused

on understanding symbiotic interactions while discussing

how to increase awareness for important climate change

related topics. Life on the Edge was a course that examined

a local biome — the rocky intertidal. We not only covered

the extreme conditions and the inhabitant’s adaptations,

but also prepared for an advanced course that would take

place the subsequent Quarter.

Advanced Marine Biodiversity: Life on the Edge took place

in person at the Aburto Octavio Lab on the UCSD campus.

I would spend my afternoon at the lab from 1:00-5:00pm

either working on our lab experiment, listening to a lecture

about scientific writing or the intertidal’s unique features,

or collaborating with a group of my peers on poster

presentations of our research. In addition to having the

opportunity to be in an actual lab, the class also had on-site

field days where we would visit a rocky intertidal to learn

more about conservation efforts or collect samples for study.

What Advice Do You Have For Teens Looking For

Summer Programs?

My advice for teens looking into programs is to be ambitious!

My first course through UCSD Extension was meant for

college level, but I was taking it as an incoming freshman

in high school. Even though it was challenging, I mastered

advanced concepts compacted in a short time and felt an

amazing sense of accomplishment. For teens looking for an

in-depth experience, lead with your passion and just go for it!

It is so worth it to meet new people who share your interests

and instructors who are truly dedicated.

and interests. Here are a few of the many benefits of a

summer job that can set you apart when it comes time for

college admission decisions.

Teaches Responsibility

A summer job is an excellent way for you to learn

responsibility. You will know how to show up on time,

complete assigned tasks, and deal with customers or

clients.

Builds Work Ethic

Another benefit of having a summer job is that it

can help to build a strong work ethic. You will learn

the importance of hard work and dedication as you

complete your daily tasks.

Teaches Time Management Skills

A summer job can teach valuable time management

skills. You will learn to balance your work schedule with

other commitments, such as school or extracurricular

activities.

Helps Build Confidence

Finally, having a summer job can help build your

confidence. You will feel good about yourself when you

can complete your tasks and receive positive feedback

from your employer.

VOLUNTEER

Summertime is an excellent opportunity for high school

students to get involved in volunteer work. Colleges are

increasingly looking for applicants committed to helping

others and improving their community. Volunteering

provides an opportunity for students like you to do just

that. Many colleges value community service involvement

highly.

ONLINE COURSES

Summer is the perfect time to take online courses to learn

new skills or explore new interests. An online course demonstrates

your willingness to continue learning and can

easily set you apart from other college applicants. Online

courses like those found on Coursera are a great way

knowledge in the subject of your choice. Summer is the

time, so don’t miss out on this opportunity!

BLOG OR VLOG

Summer is the perfect time to start a blog or vlog about

topics that interest you. Students are often so busy with

their coursework and other activities that they don't

have time to do something like this. However, during the

summer, you can utilize your free time to work on a blog

or vlog. College admissions officers love applicants with

creative voices, so starting a blog or vlog about topics

that interest you. Some of the more popular platforms

to host your blog or vlog are WordPress, Medium, Wix,

Ghost, or Tumblr. Express and curate your passions in

a blog or vlog to develop your writing and storytelling

skills and build an audience for your work.

SUMMER PROGRAMS

Summer programs allow students to learn about a

their academic profile and even earn college credit.

Summer programs can be a great way to connect with

other aspiring scholars and show colleges that you’re

passionate about learning. They look great on college

applications as they demonstrate your commitment and

enthusiasm for the subject. Some focus on a particular

subject, such as math or science, while others allow

students to explore a range of interests.

Spending your summer taking steps to improve your

college applications can seem like a lot of work, but it's

worth it. It's important to remember that many of your

fellow applicants will spend their summers relaxing

and enjoying themselves. If you want to get ahead, you

need to take the time to develop your interests and

skills. Fortunately, plenty of great summer activities

will help you prepare for college admission and set

you apart from other applicants! So what are you

waiting for? Make your summers count – do something

extraordinary to help you get into the college of

your choice!

LMU Summer Programs

Why did you choose to participate in this

program?

I chose to participate in Loyola Marymount University’s

Film Production: Social Impact Filmmaking Summer

Pre-College Program because of my passion for film

and to get a sense of being away from home.

How did you decide which program was

right for you?

I have wanted to go to film school since I was a

freshman, so taking a college course to see if I’m

ready for the type of classes I would take was a

great eye-opener. After doing my research I knew

my class would be small and I would learn so much.

What was a typical day in your program?

With 10 of us in class, we all bonded and worked so

well with each other. We would all go to class in the

morning. After that, we would go to lunch where I got

to hang out with students in other programs. After

lunch, we would go to our afternoon class. In our

class we would learn about techniques of filmmaking,

working with equipment, and the process of producing

films. In the last two weeks of our program, we used

what we learned and produced our own films that we

wrote, directed, and edited. Although the program

was a lot of work, it was manageable and enjoyable.

Outside of the program I got to spend time at the

pool, on the bluff, enjoying activities with our

Resident Advisors, and just hanging out with friends.

What was the most memorable moment of

your program?

Although all of it was memorable, my favorite part of

the program was my shooting day for my final product.

I got to go to LMU’s Playa Vista Campus to film and

worked with a wonderful actress and the best crew I

could ask for. The whole experience made me realize

how much I deeply love film and want to pursue it.

It also made me realize that I am comfortable being

across the country away from my friends and family.

What advice do you have for teens looking

at programs?

For teens looking at a program to apply to or attend, I

recommend looking at what students had to say and

what the program offers. Doing research really helped

me understand what the program was all about. I’m

so thankful for my experience at Loyola Marymount

University and highly recommend the opportunity.

By KENDALL PTASZNIK

Tufts Pre-College Intensive:

Mini-Med School

Why Did You Choose to Participate In

This Program?

I chose to participate in the Tufts Mini Medical School

because of its unique, immersive, and hands-on

experience. I wanted a summer experience where I

could begin to dip my toes into the field of medicine

and what being in medical school was like, while

also ensuring that the program would be fun. After

searching high and low on the internet, I came across

this program. It stood out to me because of the varying

activities- from lectures to the SIM lab to the handson

clinical experiences. From my findings, no other

programs were as immersive and hands-on as the

one at Tufts.

What Was A Typical Day In Your Program?

A typical day at Tufts would start around 8 am on

the bus to Boston where the Medical School is (we

resided at the Tufts Medford campus). At the medical

school, we would rotate through lectures, the SIM lab,

and clinical experiences, all one-on-one with Tufts

medical students. The most memorable moments of

the program were the bonds we created in our group

and with the medical students (the teaching assistants)

and the SIM lab. We spent most of the day in a small

group of fifteen and became so close. It was amazing

to spend time with others who are interested in the

same career field as me, and so insightful to be able to

firsthand ask questions to a current medical student to

see what the future could possibly hold.

What Was the Most Memorable Moment of

Your Program?

The SIM lab was a unique simulation center where we,

over the course of the two weeks, learned about mock

patient STAN’s case (via watching assigned homework

videos and in-person lectures from the instructor) and

at the end of the second week, got to treat STAN in a

mock emergency room. It was incredible to be able

to use the exact facilities that real medical students

use every day to truly immerse myself in the field of

medicine and decide if the path is right for me.

What Advice Do You Have For Teens Looking

For Summer Programs?

For teens looking at programs, I highly recommend

comparing any program that stands out to you and why

you can see yourself excelling in that program. Check

out the Instagram pages for that specific program,

YouTube videos created about the program, and look

into every nook-and-cranny of the program’s website

to gather as much information regarding the specifics

Mini-Medical Summer Program made for the best

summer ever because of the memories I made! I could

not have asked for a better way to help me decide

whether the field of medicine is for me or not, and

thanks to Tufts, I know it is.

5 Ways to Pay for Your

SUMMER PROGRAM

BY JOHNATHAN KINDALLL

ummer enrichment opportunities can be

life changing experiences, but many of the

best programs require some form of down

payment or enrollment fee of some kind.

While there are many low cost programs

out there, cost is the leading factor for

many students when they’re choosing a program. For

this reason, it's important to know all of the options

available to you when it comes to financing a summer

program.

Here are 5 of the most common ways that students

and parents can pay for a summer program:

1. SCHOLARSHIPS

While not nearly as common as academic scholarships

to colleges or universities, summer program

scholarships do exist. Most of these scholarships

require that the program awards college credit, but

many of the experiences in this guide do just

that. Additionally, a number of counselors and

consultants offer speciality support scholarships

for students enrolling in various types of summer

programs. Individual programs too may also offer

scholarships or financial aid to qualifying students,

so be sure to inquire when exploring programs.

2. A 529 TAX SAVINGS ACCOUNT

Some students may be able to use a 529 tax savings

account to help fund their summer programs

experience. This too requires that the program

awards college credit but, if it does, a 529 can be

used for all sorts of expenses, not just program

tuition. While the primary goal of your summer

programs shouldn’t just be getting college credit,

finding a program that offers it can certainly help

reduce the total cost overall, so keep that in mind

when making your decision. »

2023 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS | 27

3. DONATIONS AND GIFTS

If there are no scholarships available for your preferred

program or if the experience does not offer college

credit, you may have to be more creative with your

summer program funding. Many students hold a

fundraising campaign through sites like GoFundMe or

other online platforms to afford their summer program.

Other students may write to family members,

friends and local businesses and churches, asking for

small contributions to fund their experience. It’s important

to be honest and clear in these situations about

where and how the money will be used though; explain

to potential donors what you hope to gain from your

summer experience and how their gift will help you

achieve it. When done with transparency and persistence,

this can be one of the most effective ways to

raise money for a summer program experience.

4. WORKING

While some summer enrichment programs last a

number of months, many programs are only a week

or so in length. This means that, while your summer

program may be the best part of your time off

school, it certainly won’t be the only thing you do

that year. Because of this, students may be able

to get a summer job to help fund their program

experience. If the timing is right, consider working

for the majority of their summer and storing away

a little bit of money every week to help pay for your

summer program. Not only will you get another

valuable item for your resume, but you’ll have the

opportunity to use your hard-earned money on a

truly transformative experience.

5. ALL OF THE ABOVE!

The truth is that, for many students, no single

method listed above will pay for the full cost of

their summer program. In fact, depending on the

program, you may need to employ two or three of

the options mentioned here, and that’s perfectly

reasonable! With a combination of scholarships,

donations, savings and more though, any student

can fund the summer program of their dreams.

Quinnipiac University Summer Programs

Why did you choose to participate in this

program?

After attending the Quinnipiac University Open House

last Spring, I knew I could see myself going to school

there. Quinnipiac moved up on my list to my first

choice for college. I figured it would be an amazing

opportunity to experience a little taste of what college

would be like and would help me confirm what I want

to do in the future. The program helped me to confirm

that I want to be an Occupational Therapist.

How did you decide which program was

right for you?

I knew I wanted to choose an occupation in Allied

Health Sciences. Allied Health professions encompass

a large group of professions. When I received an

email about the summer programs being offered, I

decided that the Health Exploration Program would

be perfect for me because it would give an insight to

many healthcare professions, which is exactly what I

needed to help me determine what I wanted to do in

my future.

What was a typical day in your program?

I woke up around 7am to get ready and then headed

over to the student center for breakfast around 8.

After breakfast, we went to the designated classroom.

Classrooms changed each day depending on the occupation

we learned about. Each class was set up as a

hands-on workshop about that specific profession we

were learning about that day. Each session had a professional

from the field who spoke about what a day

in the life of that profession was like. We then had a

hands-on activity. The sessions went from 9am-12pm,

with a lunch break from 12-1pm.

22 30 | 2023 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

Classes resumed from 1-3pm. At 3:00pm we had the

opportunity to hang out with other students until dinner

at 5:00pm. After dinner we had an evening activity

provided by our amazing counselors and would head

back to the dorms at 8pm and be in bed by 10pm.

The program also gave us the opportunity to explore

different activities in the area. We went hiking at

Sleeping Giant State Park, spent a day at the aquarium

and zoo. These outings gave us an opportunity to get to

know the staff and the other students in the program.

What was the most memorable moment of

your program?

That is a hard question for me to answer! I have

many reasons why the program was memorable

and unforgettable. First, where else would I have the

opportunity to hold a human brain! The program gave

me great insight on each profession and that helped

me decide that I want to be an Occupational Therapist.

Secondly, I met amazing people! The staff were

knowledgeable and so friendly. I also made great friends

that I still talk to everyday! Thirdly, it allowed me to see

what college life was going to be like. This experience

helped me realize that I am ready to go away and

experience the world.

What advice do you have for teens looking

at programs?

Do not be scared or nervous! Try them out! I was

nervous about leaving my family and giving up two

weeks of my summer break, but it truly was one of

the best decisions I have ever made. The memories I

created during the program will stay with me forever.

I created special bonds with other students in the

program and I got insight about college life. I suggest

that if you are apprehensive about going away to school

and not sure what you want to study, find a summer

program that interests you and get ready for an

unforgettable experience!

Our summer programs

don’t just ignite passions.

They inspire purpose.

Quinnipiac University summer programs and camps

are designed by our renowned faculty to give youth

the opportunity to explore their interests and make

an impact through experience-based learning.

We offer a variety of high-interest summer programs

and camps for middle and high school students.

Topics range from film, podcasting and sports

journalism to STEM-focused offerings like medical

microbiology, healthcare career exploration, business

and game design. All our programs take place over

one or two weeks and offer commuter and overnight

residential options located on our stunning central

Connecticut campuses. It’s not just a summer

program, it’s a defining pre-college experience.

SAIC: Bachelor of Fine Arts in Writing

Why Did You Choose to Participate In

This Program?

I chose to participate in the Creative Writing

program at the School of the Art Institute of

Chicago because I’ve always known I wanted

to be a writer. That’s the only thing even at the

moment that I know for sure - that I’m a writer.

I love learning new forms of writing and new

ways to engage with written text.

How Did You Decide Which Program Was

Right For You?

I knew SAIC was right for me because I wanted

to be surrounded by creatives and creative

people who were passionate about their work

and SAIC being interdisciplinary allowed people

to open themselves

up to new things and new experiences.

What Was A Typical Day In Your Program?

A typical class in my program is reading

people’s work and critiquing it, and engaging

in inspiring works that make us think about

things differently or similarly - we read to work

our minds.

"I love learning new forms

of writing and new ways to

engage with written text."

What Was the Most Memorable Moment

of Your Program?

My most memorable moment at SAIC was showing my

work in the Residence Hall student-run Siragusa gallery

and getting to witness people interacting with my work

and enjoying it. It was the first time I really saw what life

after SAIC could be.

What Advice Do You Have For Teens Looking

For Summer Programs?

My advice for people who are looking at SAIC is make

sure you’re serious about this path you want to take. This

school doesn’t always make it easy to love it, but when

it does, it becomes so worth it. But, you have to put the

work in and be ready to fail so you can get better.

By BRYANAH HOUSTIN

Boston Leadership Institute:

Intro to Surgery

I took Intro to Surgery, described by BLI as a

one-week medical program that introduces

students to basic surgical skills, such as surgical

knot tying and suturing. It allows us to translate

these skills to mock surgeries. Students focus

on cardiovascular disease, including coronary

artery bypass grafting. Students additionally

complete, in groups, a slideshow presentation

involving cardiothoracic diseases and their surgical

treatments. They will then practice their presenting

skills as they present their work to the rest of the

class. They learn skills that will aid them in the

process of applying to and succeeding in pre-med

and medical programs in their futures.

During my time attending the BLI Intro to Surgery

program, I feel that it impacted me in many ways.

I learned skills early on that I otherwise would

have had to learn further in my academic career.

I was taught verbal study hacks by my amazing

instructors. These helped me not only remember

the materials better but also how to be more

attentive. Overall, I learned skills that will help me

down the road to further my education and lead

me to be the surgeon I one day hope to become.

I was able to perform mock surgeries such as a

gastric bypass and a CABG as well as learn and

apply many different suture technics that I still

practice today. I was also taught the proper way

to check someone's blood pressure.

This skill enabled me to be able to check my dad’s

blood pressure when needed, which I was unable

to do prior to my BLI experience. Being involved

in hands-on learning helped me understand and

physically see what I was learning to prepare me for the

work I will be executing in the future. Apart from the

medical skills I took part in, I learned how to be a leader

and the importance of collaboration skills. I learned how

to work together when in groups/duos and listen to

other people's thoughts and ideas. I gained the ability

to better my public speaking when presenting my own

ideas to my peers. All in all, I learned leadership skills

that I now apply to my everyday life. I am involved in

multiple clubs at my school, some of which I lead to

excel in the community and accomplish great goals. I am

forever grateful and blessed that I had the opportunity

to learn such amazing things at BLI.

Why Overnight Summer Programs Are

PERFECT FOR STEM STUDENTS

BY JANICE HALLER

TEM majors and careers are more popular

than ever, and the same is true for STEM

overnight summer programs at various

universities and other institutions. These

programs, designed to accommodate every

type of interest from biotechnology to

robotics, are some of the most popular and selective

summer programs available.

But why are they so important? Why should a

STEM-minded student sign up for a summer overnight

program?

Well, if they are serious about becoming future movers

and shakers of the tech or science industry, a STEM

summer overnight program will help students to develop

the skills they need for a bright and happy future in

40 | 2023 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

STEM. In fact, they’re one of the best ways for high

school students to get a taste of the professional

and academic world of STEM.

There are many other benefits to participating in

a STEM summer program too. Here’s 3 reasons

why overnight summer programs are perfect for

STEM students!

THEY ARE DESIGNED FOR TEAMWORK

STEM overnight programs are structured and built

around the idea of encouraging teamwork and

camaraderie during class hours and after hours.

Students are often put into groups and must work

together to tackle a large project in a short period of

time. But the day doesn’t end when the classes

are done.

Students often stay in dorms or dorm-like settings,

where they will live, eat, and relax with their

classmates. In their rooms they will bond over

their shared passion and love of STEM topics as

well as their backgrounds, personal interests, and

their dreams for the future. Both in and out of class,

students learn how to work and live together.

THEY TAKE STUDENTS OUT OF THEIR

COMFORT ZONE

Those dedicated to the world of STEM can often be

single-minded in their approach to success. They rely

on the tried and true formula for success which can

include a specific schedule and routine. While it is

important for the student to feel like they have control

over their environment, it is also important to push

boundaries and test your limits.

Overnight programs are a world away from home.

For younger age groups, the programs are often

smaller and run for a shorter period of time. But older

students can expect to be on a campus for two weeks

or more at a time. During this time, the overnight

program structures most of their day while allowing

some free downtime after dinner and before a

set curfew. »

This time away from all that is familiar will help

students discover personal strengths and make

lifelong friendships. It will also give them a glimpse

of the techworld and what they can expect if they

follow their dreams and pursue a career in a STEMrelated

industry.

THEY CAN OFFER A UNIQUE AND

ONE-OF-A KIND EXPERIENCE

You can fit a lot more in a program when students

don’t leave at the end of the day! Whether it’s a late

night hike to gaze at the stars or a field trip that

requires a very early start, it’s easier to have unique

and exciting activities while participating in an

overnight program than it is a day camp or online

course.

While it can be difficult for parents to let their

children go to an overnight camp for a few days or

more, remember that it offers their kids the unique

chance of having their entire day (from sunup to

sundown) packed with exciting experiments and

adventures that they wouldn’t get from a small day

camp!

Overnight camps also reach out to a larger audience

and people from different parts of the country (or

the world)! Campers will have the unique opportunity

to meet people from different cultures, regions,

languages, and walks of life. Day camps are regional

by nature, since most campers need a place to stay.

One of the joys of summer programs is that it is a

unique time to forge memories and bonds that can

span a lifetime. For children who are passionate

about STEM, connections can be the stepping stone

that take them to the next level of discovery and

success. There are special benefits to overnight

programs that are not found in day camps. This

especially applies to STEM centered camps that are

here to help students form a strong understanding

of their field as well as skills to work and succeed

with those around them.

Cornell's Online Precollege Program

I attended Charles O. Dickerson High School in

Trumansburg, New York. I graduated in June of 2021.

I learned about Cornell's Online Precollege Program

through word of mouth and was excited to take a

course. So what was my summer online course with

Cornell like? I took PSYCH 1990: Sport Psychology,

with Dr. Mary Turner DePalma. I was immersed in a

class which included both high school and college

students. It introduced me to a heavier workload,

which I hadn't had the chance to experience in the

typical high school setting I was accustomed to.

Lectures were thought provoking and challenging,

for my younger mind. I always looked forward to

class in anticipation of questions my professor would

pose. My Cornell Precollege experience definitely

factored into my decision to apply to Cornell for

college. I greatly enjoyed Precollege and found

connecting through a professor in higher education

incredibly rewarding. I desired experience working

in the field of scientific research and Cornell, being

a land-grant university with many opportunities,

was the perfect environment to pursue research in

addition to higher education.

As for advice for those applying to the Cornell

Summer Online program, I would say as difficult as

it may be, I recommend doing all your homework

as soon as possible since the courses are very fast

paced. Always communicate with your professor

and connect with them. Finally, look for a change

of scenery—going outside to do my work instead

of staying shut in my room often got me through

long passages of reading. Today, I am majoring in

Biological Sciences in the College of Agriculture

and Life Sciences at Cornell.

I think my Precollege course prepared me on what to

expect from Cornell academics. I currently work in a

USDA lab under my graduate student mentor focusing

on virology projects. The research opportunity and

lab experience has been incredibly valuable. One of

the best things at about attending Cornell is working

at the USDA Heck Lab where I helps prepare experiments

for virology research. Not only has the lab work

been amazing, but the people are wonderful, making

this hands-on work the best experience I’ve had at

Cornell so far.

Arcos Journeys Abroad

Why Did You Choose to Participate In

This Program?

I chose this program because it had great

reviews, and offered a little bit of everything:

Spanish classes, home-stay, cultural activities,

community service and adventure! Although this

was my first time traveling alone and I was really

nervous, I really wanted to have a cross cultural

experience and challenge myself. Arcos Journeys

Abroad made me feel confident that I would be

safe and have an excellent time.

How Did You Decide Which Program Was

Right For You?

I really wanted to go to a Spanish speaking

country and Costa Rica seemed like a great,

safe choice for my first time traveling alone.

This program offered everything I was looking

for (adventure, Spanish immersion, home stay,

cultural experiences and community service)

all wrapped up in one. Acros Journeys Abroad

had great reviews in all areas, particularly safety

and that was most important to my parents.

The staff at Arcos was always very responsive

to any questions we had and the application

process was straight forward. Arcos was also

an affordable program compared to others and

seemed to offer more than others.

What Was A Typical Day In Your Program?

We would begin the day with a delicious

homemade breakfast by our host mom, then

walk to school where we would have morning

Spanish class in a cool open air class room

surrounded by trees. In the afternoon we would

have cultural activities such as cooking, dance or

art. We would also have free time to walk around the

cute town. Later, we would have an authentic dinner

prepared by our home stay mom and have time to

hang out with other kids in the program.

What Was the Most Memorable Moment

of Your Program?

Two of my most memorable experiences was zip

lining above the canopy of the beautiful Costa Rican

jungle. We took a bus ride through the country side

and stayed in a hotel with a pool and hot tub. And

the second was surfing in the warm, blue waters at

Jaco Beach.

What Advice Do You Have For Teens Looking

For Summer Programs?

Choose a program that has good ratings in all areas,

especially safety. Choose a program in a country

that interests you, and offers plenty of activities and

cultural experiences. I think it is important to be

able to do some type of community service activity

as well so that you're giving back to the community

and not just being a tourist. I think it's a good idea

to be in a program with kids who are generally the

same age range. Even though it might be scary, I

recommend going by yourself because you will meet

so many more new people that way and come home

with new friends! I made some really great friends

through Arcos Journeys Abroad. It was a real bonding

experience!

HOW AN ONLINE SUMMER PROGRAM

Can Change Your Life

BY JOHNATHAN D. KINDALL

or students, parents and educators alike, the

months of virtual learning brought about by

the COVID-19 pandemic were difficult. Decreased

focus, increased cheating, and lack

of equal access were just some of the many

drawbacks that this new normal brought with

it. For students who struggled, the recent return to

fully in-person classes was more than welcome.

So why are we still talking about online learning in

2023? Because even though students have returned

to the classroom, online learning is here to stay, and

the summer is the best time for students and parents

to take advantage of the many opportunities now

available to them.

The technological and educational advances made in the

last two years have revolutionized the way that everyone

thinks about learning online, and education is more

open and accessible than ever before, especially when it

comes to summer programs. Online summer programs

offer a world of enriching, supplemental education that

has the opportunity to take students far beyond the

confines of their classroom, and participating in one of

the programs featured here could change the shape of a

student's career and life forever.

Online summer courses can teach students a new

language or show them how to code. They can prepare

them for a career in finance or get them into the college

of their dreams. In fact, online summer programs

offer all of the benefits of a traditional summer program

50 | 2023 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

with an added degree of adaptability and flexibility

placed on top.

In this article, we’ll examine the ways that

online summer programs offer students new

and exciting opportunities that can change their

life for the better. Then, on the following pages,

you’ll find a list of online summer programs

that are available for students to sign up for

right now! Enjoy!

ONLINE SUMMER PROGRAMS

EXPOSE YOU TO SUBJECTS NOT

OFFERED AT SCHOOL

One of the best things about online summer

learning is that it offers students a chance to study

topics that may not be available in their classrooms

or community. This can include specialized

academic studies in certain types of math and

engineering or an expansion of after-school

extracurriculars like culture clubs or video

game groups.

Many schools across the country have curriculum

that changes with the times, but plenty of schools

are behind the curve when it comes to courses

in STEM and other disciplines. Online summer

classes then can be an incredible benefit to a

student who knows what they are passionate

about but aren’t sure how to take the next step

at their current school.

For example: a student living in a school district

where personal finance classes are ineffective

or nonexistent might turn to an online summer

course at Teach Me Wall Street to help learn about

the fields that interest them most. In fact, it may

be the only way that a student like that could learn

about such topics.

No longer are students confined to their school’s

district, resources or schedule. Now, all of

humanity’s knowledge is available at students'

fingertips just waiting to be explored. The world of

online learning offers near-infinite possibilities, and

the various online summer programs featured in

this guide are one of the best examples of the

fact that.

ONLINE SUMMER PROGRAMS PREPARE

YOU FOR COLLEGE AND BEYOND

Well-respected online summer courses like the ones

featured in this guide can sometimes be a make or

break item on a resume. Whether you’re trying to

get into the college of your dreams or land your first

job after school, summer experience with an online

learning course is a fantastic way to set yourself apart

from the crowd.

Perhaps you don't have the time, means, or desire to

attend a multi-week summer program in person. An

online summer program is a fantastic alternative that

shows colleges and employers that you are just as

dedicated to learning outside of the classroom as any

other student.

Colleges and companies will absolutely take note of

online coursework or certifications, especially after the

last few years. Because of this, any teenager could put

together an incredibly impressive resume just from

online summer learning experiences before they even

graduate from high school.

With the explosion of online learning across the globe

then, teenagers have more control than ever over how

they appear on paper. Even if the offerings at their

school are meager, even if there’s nothing in their

area that matches their interests, students can still

boost their resume through cheap, accessible summer

courses online.

CONCLUSION

We know that many students were grateful to put the

Zoom classroom behind them forever last year, and

rightfully so. However, we hope that this article has

given you just a taste of the power that online learning

still has in 2023.

Whether it’s an academic summer program, a

career readiness course, a language program, or an

extracurricular that you’d not otherwise have access

to, online summer learning has the ability to change

your life and launch you into a future you never could

have imagined. Students’ options have never been

more numerous, and we hope you’ll take advantage of

the ones offered in this guide!

By KENNEDY KIRKLIN

Teach Me Wall Street

Why Did You Choose to Participate In This

Program?

When my school started talking about investing

I found it fascinating. I wanted to get more insight

into how stocks, bonds, and cryptocurrencies

work. When I found Teach Me Wall Street, I knew

it was the right one for me. By participating

in this program, I knew I would gain a better

understanding into how I can make my money

work for me allowing me to achieve financial

freedom.

What Did You Learn In This Summer Program?

Generally speaking, I was given a thorough

explanation of the financial industry: banking,

investing, economics, etc. Of particular significance,

I learned how and why budgeting my money is

important. The class had students from many

states, as well a few international students. I

learned how much prices and taxes vary across

the country.

I also learned how investing is used to create and

grow wealth. Additionally, I learned about how each

investment strategy has different risks and steps.

I'm glad I got the opportunity to participate in this

program because now I know more than

my parents!!

What Advice Do You Have For Teens Looking

For Summer Programs?

My advice to any teen applying to a summer

program is to make choices that align with your

interests. This is important because you want to

enjoy and connect to the content. Secondly, the

program should prepare you for the future.

Every week was a different class. The class schedule

was flexible. Class was presented twice a day and I

could easily change when my schedule changed.

"This is an ever-changing world that we live in,

so attaining the knowledge and skills that will help

you out in the future will be beneficial."

This is an ever-changing world that we live in, so

attaining the knowledge and skills that will help you

out in the future will be beneficial. And lastly, be sure

to make the most of your experience! Ask questions.

Do the extra research. And show resilience.

What Was the Most Memorable Moment of

Your Program?

Despite the fact that we were virtual, the instructor

found ways to keep the class engaged throughout

the course. One of the more memorable parts of this

program was completing the hands-on activities. The

instructor would show the class a demonstration live,

allowing time for questions. After the demonstration

we were then asked to complete a similar assignment.

For example, if we were working on finding stock

tickers, she would show us how to do this kind of

research. Then she would have us find the ticker of

a different company.

2023 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS | 57

By JESS BERKUN

iBme Teen Mindfulness Retreat

Why did you choose to participate in

iBme's Teen Mindfulness Retreat?

I fully believe I have, in my time with iBme,

learned how to be human, how to navigate

relationships and pain, how to communicate,

how to listen, and how to love. It’s life school.

How did you decide which program

was right for you?

If you are looking for somewhere to find faith,

somewhere to find some kind of love for

humanity, this is the place. I found so much

hope and love here that really do not seem to

exist in other spaces in our world.

What was a typical day in your program?

The retreat experience can really be transformed

to fit you; you can socialize and make friends, you

can read or write at any available time, you can

get to know teachers, you can go on hikes, etc.

What was the most memorable moment of

your program?

On my very first retreat, I was really really scared

because I saw a lot of people talking to each other

who already knew each other and my social anxiety

at the time was awful. I started crying and I almost

left because I was so scared. I ended up talking to

a teacher and going on a walk with her, and she

was kind enough that I felt alright to stay. Later that

night a teacher let me use their phone to text my

mother that I was ok, even though usually phones

aren’t allowed. By the end of retreat, I was comfortable

and had made friends of my own, but even if

that didn’t happen, I knew I’d be supported, accepted,

and loved.

“As a teenager, this is one of the

first places I felt fully accepted in my

own skin, and I felt free to exist as I am

and not try to change anything”

What advice do you have for teens looking at

programs?

If you are looking for somewhere to find faith, somewhere

to find some kind of love for humanity, this is

the place. I found so much hope and love here that

really do not seem to exist in other spaces in our

world. As a teenager, this is one of the first places I felt

fully accepted in my own skin, and I felt free to exist as

I am and not try to change anything. It’s the first place

I heard the phrase, “I love you; keep going.” I offer that

phrase to you now, if you find it to be helpful, from an

internet stranger. Thanks so much for reading what I

have to say.

PREPARING FOR

A CAREER IN THE ARTS:

Do Summer Programs Help?

BY JOHNATHAN D. KINDALL

ttending an arts summer program is a

wonderful opportunity for a number of

reasons: it can expose students to ideas

not available at their school, connect them

to artistic peers and mentors, and prepare

them for whatever direction they want to take their

artistic career.

A number of the summer programs offered in this guide

allow artistic students to explore and refine their skills

in an open and encouraging environment, and there’s

few better ways to prepare for an artistic career than

getting a taste of it while still in high school. In fact, the

summer programs in this guide offer all students - but

art students especially - a leg up above the competition.

60 | 2023 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

Participating in one may greatly increase one’s chances

of turning their passion into their career.

That being said though, it’s important to be honest

about the realities of living as a working artist, if that’s

the path your student takes. For many, the struggles

that come with being a professional artist are more

than worth it for the personal and creative fulfillment

that their work can bring. But like with all jobs, pursuing

a career in the arts brings its own set of unique

challenges and difficulties.

Yes, summer programs can absolutely help prepare

students for a career in the arts. But if you’re

considering the option, there’s a few other important

questions to ask yourself or your student. Here’s 5 that

we recommend answering:

1. ARE YOU WILLING TO BE DEDICATED?

For professionals in the art world, a high degree of selfmotivation

and dedication is required. If you’re making

a living as an artist of any kind, you’ll likely have to

learn how to set your own schedule and meet important

deadlines. Whether you’re a musician with a can’t-miss gig

coming up or a writer with a draft soon due, dedication

to your work is essential when it comes to being a

professional artist. If you find that you’re procrastinating

on your artistic work now, ask yourself why that might be

and whether or not you’ll have the self-determination to

follow through once art is your career.

2. ARE YOU PREPARED FOR ART TO BE

MORE THAN JUST A HOBBY?

Simply put: professional artists must sometimes work

on their pieces even if they’re not in the mood to

create. Are you ready to meet a deadline even if you

don’t feel intense artistic inspiration? Are you willing to

learn the difference between a finished product and a

perfect one? Or, would you prefer for your art to remain

something that you only do in your free time? These

are important questions for any artist, and the delicate

balance between passion and productivity is something

that all professional artists must eventually come to

discover on their own. »

"there’s few better ways to prepare for an artistic career

than getting a taste of it while still in high school"

3. CAN YOU MARKET YOUR WORK?

There are many aspects to a career as a working artist

besides the mere creation of art. If you’re working as

an artist under the employ of a larger company, then

this aspect of the job may be taken care of by other

departments. However, if your eventual goal is to be

self-employed on the basis of your artistic skill, then

be sure to ask yourself whether you’re willing to take

on the business side of being a professional artist.

The most successful professional artists have skills in

promoting, selling and marketing their art, in addition

to just creating it. Are you willing to learn these skills

as well?

4. ARE YOU WILLING TO PUT UP

WITH OTHER DIFFICULTIES?

Like with all businesses, conflict will undoubtedly

arise from a career in the arts. Whether it’s a botched

audition, a canceled event or a rejection from a major

publisher, there’s sure to be some rough patches along

the way. Sometimes this comes from people who don’t

understand your work or your passion, and sometimes

this comes directly from other collaborators. How much

are you willing to put up with when it comes to your art?

Do you have a thick skin or are you willing to grow one?

As all professionals learn eventually, you must be willing

to take the good with the bad.

5. ARE YOU READY FOR THE MOST

FULFILLING EXPERIENCE OF YOUR LIFE?

If you’re able to answer yes to all (or even most) of the

questions above, then it sounds like you’re ready to start

your future in the arts! Like with all careers, a job in the

artistic world comes with a unique set of challenges

and struggles. However, if you’re passionate about your

work and willing to learn, grow and create as you go,

then a career spent in the arts can only be fulfilling and

rewarding.

Global Routes | Leaders in Action

I was seven years old when I started dreaming

about the opportunity to travel with Global Routes.

I would count the summers left until I’d graduate as

a leader in training at my summer camp, Windsor

Mountain, and could complete the next step in

my leadership journey. Not only have I grown up

wanting to go on a GR trip, but I have grown up

hearing anecdotes from my mom who traveled

with Global Routes when she was a teenager. While

Global Routes has changed and evolved over the

years, the core values have remained the same;

I, like my mom, have learned the importance of

cultural immersion, respect, community, growth,

and friendship.

I chose the Leaders in Action program because

it had an emphasis on leadership training which

I felt would benefit me both in my personal and

academic life. Every morning when I woke up, my

host-mom Lily would have a delicious breakfast

ready on the table for us: a hot cup of Costa

Rican coffee, gallo pinto, cheese empanadas,

and homemade guanabana jam with crackers.

We usually spent the mornings doing work or

exploring the community. We built a greenhouse

in the elementary school, painted tires around

the massive soccer field, completed team building

challenges in addition to exploring farms, rivers, and

landmarks around town. It was a great time to build

relationships with people we never would have

otherwise met. At dinner time I would walk back up

the hill with my friends who lived by me and help

my host-mom cook dinner and practice my Spanish.

Dinner was one of my favorite times of day because

it was when I was pushed to work on my Spanish to

fill the dinner table with conversation and laughs.

We ended many nights with tea and cookies; Lily and

I would go into her garden to pick tea leaves before

my friends from next door came over to debrief the

day. We loved having tea outside at the picnic table so

we could look at the stars and be close to the river, an

experience you cannot get living in NYC. One of the most

memorable parts of my program was the time we spent

in the rainforest. At the RAC (our jungle lodge), we spent

three days learning about nature, history, survival, and

inner peace. We stayed in the home of Mauricio which

had incredible views of the most beautiful green covered

mountain with a waterfall flowing into the river just below

us. Waking up to that view was surreal to say the least.

The time we spent there was filled with laughter and

heavy rain, and we had an absolute blast. One of my

favorite activities was gathering food from the property

and helping Mauricio’s mom cook dinner for 24 people.

My advice for teens looking for programs is to find one

that matches your values. I recommend Global Routes

because of its emphasis on cultural immersion and

because of the wonderful people who work hard to make

it the best. Additionally, I would recommend a tech-free

program like Global Routes. I understand the urge to

want your phone while traveling but the experience

is enhanced when you disconnect and learn how to

entertain yourself without a device. Having no phones

enriches the experience of traveling as you are able to

fully connect with the world around you. Finally, don’t

be scared to go on a trip if you don’t speak the same

language as your host family. I was nervous at first, but I

improved my Spanish so much on this program!

SUMMER PROGRAMS:

What Teens with Mental Health

Challenges Should Know

BY ERIC ENDLICH, PH.D.

nxiety and other mental health challenges

seem to be increasingly common in

teens these days. Fortunately, summer

programs have the potential to make a real

difference.

HOW SUMMER PROGRAMS CAN HELP

“Summer programs represent a great opportunity for

teens to continue working toward their readiness for

college,” notes Kevin Trimble, director of Beyond Akeela.

68 | 2023 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

“They are a chance to meet and build relationships

with new peers. Summer programs also provide

opportunities to practice managing their mental health

outside of their high school environment. Often this

results in a confidence boost.”

“Teens with mental health challenges may feel a respite

from the day-to-day difficulties and meet other individuals

with common goals and values,” says Alexander Morris-

Wood, Associate Vice President of Transitions and Student

Experience at Beacon College. “I have seen individuals

leave summer programs rejuvenated because they

accomplished a significant goal over a short period.”

SELECTING A PROGRAM

For teens with significant mental health issues, the search

process involves more than just finding a program that

matches their interests. Here are some additional factors

to consider:

• Distance from home. Staying close to home may limit

the selection, but will allow continued access to existing

supports such as therapists or family.

• Remote vs. in-person. While some students don’t care

for remote learning, teens with social anxiety may actually

prefer virtual summer programs which allow them to

remain in the comfort of their own homes.

• Size of the program. Smaller groups may be less

stressful for those with social anxiety or noise sensitivity.

• Focus of the program. Does the program teach coping,

social or life skills? If so, it may be especially beneficial.

“Families should evaluate how much is scheduled for the

teen and how much built-in support is provided to support

a teen's social-emotional skill development,” Morris-Wood

advises. “Secondly, the length of the program should

be considered, especially if this is the teen's first time

away from home or engaging in a more intensive social

environment since the COVID pandemic.”

“I encourage students to understand their own unique

needs and work to find a program that will be able to

accommodate those needs,” says Marci Schwartz, Ph.D.,

founder of Thrive Counseling. “For example, if a student

feels it would be beneficial to continue to meet with a »

therapist while away, check with the program to ensure

there will be access to a private location to take a

telehealth meeting.”

Therapist Alisha Uppal recommends that families

“determine if the summer program provides a

supportive environment for learning and personal

development. Summer programs should not only be

for academic development, but also for learning how

to thrive in an independent environment.”

HOW TO PREPARE

“Prior to the summer program the student should

be completely independent in taking and managing

medications as well as be a good self-advocate in

knowing when to reach out for support,” Schwartz

says. “Prepare, plan and practice,” psychologist

Sharon Saline, Psy.D. advises. “Talk about any concerns

in advance and create some practical strategies that

you can access. Then practice these options in your

current life so they become more familiar.”

Likewise, Trimble points out, “We all do best when we

know what to expect walking into any situation. We

suggest that teens review the websites so they can get an

understanding of what they'll be doing. Attend any and all

orientations or pre-summer gatherings! Create a plan for

how teens will access mental health support while they're

in a summer program.”

It may seem like a lot to consider, but with the right

selection and preparation, a summer program can be a

truly transformative experience.

iD Tech

How did you turn your love of gaming into a

career in the software industry?

I got my start in coding as a camper at iD Tech

during my freshman and sophomore years in high

school. I attended summer camps at Carnegie

Mellon University, first taking a course in Level

Design before returning the following summer for

a course in Unreal Engine 3. They were both such

awesome experiences that I ended up coming back

as an iD Tech instructor at summer camp in 2013.

What role did iD Tech play in your career

journey?

To me, iD Tech is more than a camp—it’s a major

part of my pathway from starting as a high school

student that was passionate about games, to going

into college for computer science, and eventually

becoming a developer in the gaming industry.

My time at iD Tech inspired me to pick computer

science as my major in college, which I did for all

four years. After that, I ended up going to grad

school for video game programming as well.

In my professional career, I started as an intern

at Madden and eventually grew into a full-time

role. During my four years there, I worked on the

Gameplay team and helped with the creation of

Madden 16-19. In my next role, I worked for a

studio called GameSim, where I was able to work

on several awesome projects. Currently, I work at

Ubisoft Red Storm as a Senior Gameplay Engineer.

I have been with this company for two years now,

working on Assassin's Creed VR.

What is your favorite part about your career?

I really like being a gameplay engineer. There's

just something awesome about taking a design from a

prototype to trying it out to making it into a full feature

that is really inspiring to me. It's the biggest part of

making a game. It's the back of the box features—it's

what people get to play and get their hands on. And to

say that I've worked on that is really rewarding.

What do you think is in store for the future of the

STEM and tech industry?

I think as we keep going forward, kids are going to be

taking coding classes the way that you would take Spanish

or any other foreign language. You're going to be learning

this new language, which it really is—it's learning to speak

with your computer. I think one of the most exciting

things about the gaming industry is how fast it changes

and how fast it grows. Just in my lifetime alone, I can

remember playing on Nintendo, then Super Nintendo,

and what the graphics look like then to what they are

now that we're getting into 4K, which is exploring massive

universes. The tech industry is only going to continue

its growth.

Oxford Royale Academy

Why did you choose to participate in Oxford

Royale Academy's Law & Politics Summer

School?

I wanted to exercise my independence in

preparation for college, and felt that going overseas

on an academic course in a new country would be

an excellent way to do that. I also had high hopes

for other potential exciting experiences abroad – in

my studies, in seeing new places, and in making new

friends – and I was drawn to Oxford as a location

because of its history and its reputation as a leading

university of the world.

How did you decide which program was right

for you?

I looked at many programs as I investigated the

best place for my overseas study trip, but the

courses at Oxford Royale appealed to me most as

the program offered a good mix of teaching hours,

masterclasses, lectures, and opportunities to go on

excursions and enjoy free time.

What was a typical day in your program?

After breakfast we had classes throughout the

morning, with plenty of break time to relax and

swap notes with other people on the course. In

addition to the academic study, you learn new

skills such as debating, and how to think through

processes and find solutions to problems. In the

afternoon there were activities, including sports and

museum visits, and we had free time to enjoy the

sights of Oxford.

What was the most memorable moment

of your program?

The most memorable moment of my program

was the mock trial in a real court room, but I loved

every second of my course because my teacher was so

amazing. He is a captivating instructor who teaches with

detail and has such an engaging method of doing so.

You’re never bored in his class! Also, something I know

many of my classmates must have written is how much

we each loved meeting each other. We all come from

different places and have so many cultural differences

which was incredibly interesting to learn about.

What advice do you have for teens looking at

programs?

I am happy to recommend Oxford Royale to other

students. The highlight of my time at ORA was definitely

learning about all my classmates and room-mates. People

were so different from what I was used to and it was

so interesting to spend two weeks with everyone from

different countries. There is a lot of free time for you to

socialize and get to know Oxford. I felt that I increased

my knowledge, found my independence, and made new

friends and connections from all around the world.

THE SURPRISING EFFECTS

a Summer Program Had On My Life

BY CATHERINE COLLINS

ou wouldn't think spending three weeks in

a high school summer program would have

such a profound impact on my life, but it

did. During the summers of 2004 and 2005,

I attended the National Institute for American

History and Democracy’s Pre-Collegiate Program. I

traveled from my home state of Louisiana to Williamsburg,

Virginia, stayed in the dorms on the historic College

of William and Mary’s campus, and had the opportunity

to study history firsthand.

78 | 2023 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

This program is unique because it utilizes Virginia as its

classroom. After reading scholarly works about the Civil

War, for example, dozens of us piled into big white vans

and went to stand on battlefields we’d read about the night

before. There’s something about getting to physically be

in places you’re learning about, locations that shaped our

history and culture. It heightens the educational experience

to the point you feel it in your bones.

During the day, we took notes and photos (back then on

digital cameras) while on location and engaged in lively

discussions. In the evening, we uploaded our photos

and thoughts in a blog format. The articles we wrote

combined what we learned from scholarly articles, our

group discussions, and our time at each site. It was the first

time I learned how to synthesize many different types of

information and present it along with my interpretation.

I didn’t realize it at the time but there, I met wonderful

fellow students, resident assistants, and professors who

would later play an important role in helping me transition

during a significant time in my life. In fact, a month after

completing my second summer with NIAHD, I went back to

my home state of Louisiana and prepared to matriculate

as a college freshman at Tulane University. But, the same

day I moved into my dorm, I turned right around and left

as the entire city evacuated for Hurricane Katrina.

I spent a few semesters at nearby LSU while my family

and home state rebuilt, but after some time, I decided

to transfer to the other place that felt like home: William

and Mary. It wouldn’t have been possible without my

NIAHD professors, who wrote letters of recommendation

for me and explained how to apply for a financial aid

exception due to the unexpected circumstances of

the hurricane. I was awarded a grant that made tuition

affordable enough to matriculate there as a student,

where I majored in history.

My time attending the NIAHD Pre-Collegiate Program

twice meant I was familiar with William and Mary’s

campus and knew a few friendly faces already. I even

knew where to grab the best snacks and the tastiest

sandwich that I still crave to this day. This greatly helped

me with my transition during a difficult personal time. All

in all, I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a college student

at William and Mary. I interned at several museums,

took incredible history classes, and walked in Colonial

Williamsburg every chance I could.

After college, I attended graduate school at Virginia

Tech for history, where I decided to start a blog about

frugal living as a creative outlet. There I was, taking

photos of the thrift store table in my tiny graduate

school apartment, and uploading it to the internet,

not unlike my blogging days back at the Pre-Collegiate

program in high school.

What unfolded is still surprising to me. It was that blog,

not my graduate degree, that launched my career. After

writing about living a good life on my small graduate

student budget, I started freelance writing for other

outlets, using my blog as a portfolio to get gigs. Over

10 years, the blog grew, as did my freelance writing

career. Today, I’ve had the fortune of having bylines in

large publications, a book deal with Wiley, and now own five

different blogs with a business partner where we publish

content daily.

All that to say, attending a summer program led to more

than just a few college credits. For me, I found a place I

belonged with people who had similar interests. I had my

first taste of a skill that, 18 years later, enables me to do

what I love every day. I found a home and a second place

to retreat to when my world turned upside down from

Hurricane Katrina. I met friends who stood in my wedding

(and I in theirs).

So, if you're considering going to a college program in the

summer, just know that it's so much more than taking a

class. You never know who you're going to meet and what

skills you’ll learn. It just may impact the course of your life,

and by extension, your college experience, friendships, and

career in very unexpected ways.

New York School of Interior Design

Summer Pre-College Program

Why did you choose to participate

in this program?

I discovered NYSID Summer Pre-College while

reviewing the College’s admissions application

requirements on NYSID.edu. I already knew

about NYSID’s great reputation as a college

but was not aware of the summer offering

courses for high school students. With the

local university program I had planned to take

being canceled, I got permission from my

parents and time off from work to enroll in

NYSID’s Summer Pre-College I, which focuses

on the basics of residential interior design,

drafting skills, understanding floor plans

and developing a design concept and color

scheme. At the end of the 10-day class, you

have a design for a New York City apartment.

What was the most memorable moment

of your program?

“All of it! To be honest, I went into it with

relatively low, but optimistic, expectations

about the online learning experience. The

virtual high school experience that I had

during COVID was nowhere near what on-site

learning was, so I didn’t know how good a

virtual experience could be. Immediately from

the first day, I just LOVED it. It completely exceeded

my expectations.” In fact, Carrie loved

Pre-College I so much that she signed up for

Pre-College II to continue the

experience and learn more about interior

design opportunities related to designing

public and professional spaces.

What impressed you the most about

NYSID’s Summer Pre-College?

“The professors! They were so smart, enthusiastic,

and encouraging. They showed me how to build upon

and bring my ideas to life. I am still amazed about the

amount of information I learned in a four-week period.

I have never had another class in school that taught me

so much in such a short period of time. And the professors

so clearly love what they do–both as interior designers

and as teachers. Professor Pam was so passionate in

the way she explained an idea she had for a bathroom

that I felt like, I want to do that–I want to have a design

career that excites me that much.”
