Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital Charity
Weightmans and LHCH Charity
Working together to make a real difference to
the lives of people with heart and lung disease

Who are Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital?
For over 120 years there has been a hospital on the Broadgreen site specialising in the
care of people with heart and lung problems. Originally established as the Highfield TB
Sanatorium in 1903, through its development into Broadgreen Hospital and finally the
separation from Broadgreen with the development of the specialist Liverpool Heart and
Chest Hospital (LHCH) in 1995.
Today LHCH is locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally recognised for the
specialist care it provides to people living with complex heart and lung diseases.
Over 700,000 people are
admitted to hospital with
lung disease every year.
Every 5 minutes someone is
admitted to hospital due to a
heart attack.
Between 5 and 15% of those
being treated for cancer will
develop heart problems because
of the treatments they receive.
Over 25,000 young people in
the North-West are living
with congenital heart disease.
What do we do?
Covering Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales, Lancashire and the Isle of Man, a population of
2.8 million people LHCH is one of the largest single site cardio-thoracic centres in the UK.
Over 115,000 people each year depend on the care of the dedicated medical staff who work here,
and we have twice been awarded “Outstanding” status by the Care Quality Commission.
Help for damaged hearts
As well as dealing with emergency situations, LHCH provides a wide range of care for those living
with heart disease. In addition to a “round the clock” surgical service for planned and emergency
procedures LHCH also undertakes cardiac imaging and diagnostics, implantation of devices and
structural intervention of heart defects using catheterisation. We are also a leader in the field of
minimally invasive techniques being the only hospital in the UK to offer robotic heart and lung
surgery.
Our specialisms in heart treatment also includes a North-West centre for the care of young
people who have grown up with congenital heart disease. This service provides help for those who
are most seriously ill as well as those who have additional health issues either because of their
heart condition or non-cardiac related illnesses such as asthma, epilepsy, learning difficulties and
scoliosis.
Supporting every breath
For those living with lung disease LHCH is locally, regionally, and nationally recognised as a
centre of excellence and houses one of the largest thoracic units in the UK. It has multiawarding
winning Community Respiratory Services caring for people with COPD, Asthma, and
Interstitial Lung Disease (scarring of the lung tissue making it difficult to breath).
It is home to the regional adult Cystic Fibrosis unit, one of the largest in the country with an
international reputation for CF research. It also hosts the Cheshire and Merseyside Respiratory
Improvement Programme which drives better access and treatment for lung disease across the
region.
Caring for those with Cancer
As a specialist centre for the treatment of lung diseases it would be expected that LHCH has an
enormous part to play in the fight against lung cancer. What might surprise you is that LHCH is
also home to one of only half a dozen cardio-oncology centres in the UK.
The centre provides specialist help to those who already have heart disease and then develop
cancer or who are at risk of developing heart disease through the cancer treatments they
undergo.
LHCH Charity and our work with the hospital
LHCH Charity is a registered charity which exists to support the ground-breaking and innovative
work of LHCH. Our small team of three people raises on average between £750,000 and
£1 million a year to support the hospital. Our work covers three areas: -
The purchase of state-of-the-art equipment, so our patients and staff always have access to
the latest and the best.
Providing the additional amenities, such as family rooms, financial support for those most in
need, and accommodation for those who travel great distances to be with a loved one.
Funding pioneering research into preventing, treating, and curing complex heart and lung
disease in the future.
To date we have been able to make a significant contribution to LHCH. We have, amongst many
other things: -
Assisted in securing the Da Vinci robot for the establishment of the minimally invasive heart
and lung surgery.
In Intensive Care we helped to reduce the incidence of delirium with the installation of Sky
Ceiling Tiles, a new family room and a completely refurbished garden outside of the unit itself.
Purchased the first transcranial colour doppler ultrasound in Europe for use in cardiac
surgery reducing the incidence of patients having strokes whilst undergoing lengthy
procedures.
For our staff we provided a calm and restful Staff Hub which was completed during the Covid
pandemic, and which is still very well used to this day.
How we raise the funds
We are extremely fortunate to have some wonderful donors both patients, former patients and
family members who provide a steady stream of income to the charity. We also provide a range
of exciting challenge events during the year which are supported by both our donors and staff.
In addition, we work with businesses and charitable trusts to raise funds as well as schools,
colleges, and community groups of all kinds.
How working together would benefit both LHCH Charity
and Weightmans
The best corporate/charity partnerships are ones in which both parties can achieve some benefit.
For the charity it can be the purchasing of a special item of equipment and raising profile. For the
company it can be fulfilling Corporate Social Responsibility, helping to build team morale and the
potential to reach new markets and customers.
We believe that LHCH Charity and Weightmans would be a fantastic example of such a
partnership.
For LHCH Charity we have a number of vital campaigns that we believe that Weightmans could
help us to achieve:-
Revolutionary new Cardiac Output Monitors for our Intensive Care Unit which will provide
continuous monitoring both during and after surgery for our most high-risk patients
undergoing open heart surgery.
The development of the only specialist Simulation Centre in the UK which will be dedicated to
training the medical teams of today and tomorrow in the care of people living with heart and
lung disease.
The introduction of a new Electro Magnetic Bronchoscopy service to assist people in the early
detection and treatment of those with suspected lung cancer. This would be the first service
of its kind in the North-West.
For Weightmans it would:-
Help you fulfil your Corporate Social Responsibilities
Help with Team building and improved staff morale with participation in events either in house
or our own LHCH events programme.
Help your team be healthier with on-site heart and lung testing and awareness raising of heart
and lung disease generally.
Help you reach and widen your markets through our existing donors, patients, visits and staff
via our on-site TV information points, dedicated noticeboards, staff bulletins and charity and
member newsletters.
Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to tell you about how vitally important the work
of LHCH and LHCH Charity is.
We do hope that you feel, as we do, that we would make an excellent partnership and together
we can enjoy the sense of achievement in helping to improve the lives of thousands of people in
our area living with heart and lung disease.
“I am so grateful to all those that support LHCH Charity for
helping us to purchase this important piece of equipment”
Prof. Mark Field on the Transcranial Colour Doppler Ultrasound
We really are thrilled with the generosity of LHCH Charity
supporters. Without their help we wouldn’t have been able to do
any of this work which really will make such a difference to
our on-going drive to reduce delirium for our patients.”
Jacqui Stratton, Intensive Care Matron
“We were concerned that we might not be able to achieve our
target but because so many staff had either been treated by
LHCH, or had family members attending the hospital - they were
determined to make it a success.”
Paul Thomas, Solvay Group
As a family we will be forever grateful for the extra
twenty four years that my husband was able to share
with us, because of the care he received at LHCH.
Mrs S.M.
The whole team at Knowsley COPD Community
Service have always been first class. From the
helpful friendly receptionists to the caring expert
nurses. An outstanding and invaluable service.
