“2K 2.0” marked my second collaboration with Kai Chan and
took place at my gallery in the spring of 2018. For this project,
Kai utilized images from my “Mobile Poetry Lab” series as
the foundation for his collaborative pieces, while I created
photographs using a collection of objects and items he provided.
Subsequently, these works were incorporated into my “Time
Machine” series. In the exhibition, I arranged my photographs
into five vertical panels, collectively named “Five Poems.”
Beyond the core collaborative pieces, I engaged in a playful
endeavor on one of the side gallery walls. Here, I sought to pair
the objects given to me by Kai with fragments of photo prints
from my archives, including test strips of jobs collected from
our studio during the eighties and nineties. I referred to these
juxtapositions as New Stories, which were spontaneously arranged
on the wall, each accompanied by a caption line. The text was,
in fact, the most significant part of the work; it gave a soul to the
framework.
The “Thirty New Stories” series consists of thirty individual
pieces, all documented through photographs taken during
the installation on-site. I have always harbored a desire to
recreate these shots in a more elaborate manner within a studio
environment. However, I never had the chance to do that.
Perhaps, this series will serve as a blueprint for the next step, a
larger body of work.
